    My folks moved to Fairbury NE in 1966. I graduated from the old Jr/Sr high in 1968. The monopoly man is called “Jeff”, short for Jefferson County, and used as a reference to the comic strip of Mutt and Jeff. The school mascot is the Jeffs. The folks moved away in 1973, so I haven’t been back. I appreciate you taking me there, as I watch from my home in Omaha NE.

    Wow, my old hometown of Fairbury! I wish you would have visited the old Rock Island depot. Both of my grandpas, mom, dad, and brother had worked there. It used to be the Western Division office. Was a busy place. Thanks for the video!

    It breaks my heart that so many farmhouses stand empty and rot for various reasons after our grandparents and great-grandparents worked so hard to have them and nake them home.

      Some people genuinely can't afford to maintain the properties but for the most part, they don't appreciate the hard work, sacrifices, and history of these places.

    Watching from West Virginia! Beautiful old towns, making a comeback and people getting to work. The homes make me sad, not knowing why the families up and left. Beautiful cross at the end! Thanks guys, God Bless y'all! (Glen).

    Watching from Lincoln. Fairbury is my home town. Fairbury’s was one of three division points for the Rock Island Dept. When the RR was abandoned the town dropped in half from over 7000 population. It was also home to Roodes Meat Packing Plant who created the Fairbury Brand hotdogs and they are UNL stadium dogs and sold all over. They sold to Weimers with the recipe not to be changed. It was also home to the circus, hence the moral, that wintered their animals just south of town.

      That's awesome, thanks for sharing all that history with us! A lot of the small towns around here withered away after the railroads left. It's good to see Fairbury is gaining some population back and the property values are going up.

    There has been a Wal-Mart in Fairbury since the 80's. I went to it back then. I believe it was the first in the state. Someone once said that someone who who worked in the corporation was from there. Don't know if that part is really true, but it was strange it was the first one in the state.

    • @whatsaroundthebend
      @whatsaroundthebend  6 місяців тому

      That is strange! I assumed it was a new store, but it was probably just remodeled. There are a lot bigger towns than Fairbury that still don't have a Walmart.

    That first home was packed full of stuff! Like they just walked away!?
    I bet that syringe was for livestock.
    The second house looks 100 or more years old.
    3rd home is original craftsman style, early 20th century. Shame to see it trashed. We had a Black n White tv like that first one in early 60’s. Lots of vintage relics in that one!
    The last one looks like 1940’s perhaps?

Pictures were still on the walls, the dishes and cookware were still in the kitchen. I really loved that big house that had those old TVs inside. It looked like it belonged on a ranch in Montana. It says in the video to say from where this is being watched. Walla Walla, Washinton. Oh! Hey. Got a potential "bucket lister" for ya:
    Call it a "personal first". Not "advertising" but one for the list would be a place called Rudy's Classic Cars. It's 5.5-ish miles north of Harvard, NE. Saw another video of the place and I guess the owner's like, "Yeah! Look around all you want! Video? Go for it!" (etc.) Heads up, though: That junkyard looks HUGE. Examples: The "Rambler" section, the "Studebaker" section...You get the idea. (You may get followed by this ultra-friendly mutt who almost constantly wants to play fetch but that's beside the point. PFF!!) Been to NE a few times but don't recall ever being in the Harvard area.
