Using a Split Diopter

- I pulled out my split diopter (two field lens) for today’s video. These are used to get split focus shots, and are a great tool for filmmakers. You can even use them in stills, but it is used way less for that.

That's super cool. Def not "a very very poor example of foreshadowing," this is an excellent example of foreshadowing! Thanks for sharing!
I received a split diopter to try out but it is different. It has an entire coverage of glass except for a narrow band running through the center. "Center field split diopter." It's a 67mm filter so the actual glass is 62mm and the gap of no glass is 11mm wide. After seeing a few demonstrations like this video I am tempted to remove one section of glass so I have approximately a 50/50 coverage diopter like the demonstrated one. I can imagine more situations where half and half would be called for. The gap in the middle of mine only suited playing with softening and flaring candle flames while leaving the candle in focus. Also for creating light/dark bands of light falling over the scene depending on the source of light's angle and distance.
That is so cool!!! I will definitely watch out for this when I look at movies and shows. I learn something new every day. Thanks Dave!!!
Cool, Dave. I remember the Daniel Norton video where this was mentioned, and may have to try on out myself. Thanks for the reminder!
Very fascinating.. I have never heard of this until I saw this video. I also didn't even see the "line" until you pointed it out. Thank you!
I love those split diopters! Let’s shoot a scene with one
Daniel Norton Photographer Sounds good to me!
I love these. I'm a big fan of 70's films, and always noticed DePalma, Scorsese, Spielberg and more recently Tarantino often making use of these. I was also amazed at how cheap they are today considering their effectiveness in my opinion (I saw a guy on a doc talking about the making of Carrie talking about it's use in that (a scene in a classroom which focuses on both Carrie and Tommy Ross which I actually chose to talk about in a film studies class) and just assuming they'd be pricey or maybe hard to achieve a good shot. Just bought one for £18 (for DSLR), and bargain if you ask me.
Please watch Blow Out (1981) also by De Palma if you haven't already! A masterpiece. His finest work imo
Hi, where buy this lens?
I had never heard of them before I saw you with Daniel Norton that night. Could you tell us what other kind of adapters there are for lenses?
Doug Howell all kinds of adapters exist out there. From color, contrast, and blurring filters, to optical adapters like diopters. If you have a mirrorless camera, putting large flange distance lenses (like canon FD or Nikon) on the camera with a focal reducer is pretty common. I have a focusing helicoid adapter for my Leica lenses as rangefinder lenses typically don’t focus super close. It essentially turns my 9cm into a macro lens.
What lens mm you reccomend when using a split dioter?
You can use just about any focal length with it just fine. Longer lenses (or wider apertures) will make the effect more pronounced, but harder to hide the edge of the diopter lens.
Is there any triple-focus diopters? Left is middle, center is back, right is close, or some combination of the three?
I have not seen any, I feel like it may be due to different focal lengths (FOV specifically) “seeing” a different amount of the filter. In a theoretical triple focus, if you went too long focal length, you might only see the middle lens piece.
That said, there are split diopters of various strength (+1, +2, etc) making the difference between the two sides more or less. Higher power being more difference, IE: the side with the half lens focuses closer with a higher +.
Hi Dave!, how would work this for taking stills? You think you is worth it using it on photography?
It does work for stills. In the photo in this link, I used it.

If you are on a tripod, you can always focus stack and choose what you want in focus. A split diopter is less flexible, but faster of a method.
@@DaveBruscaThank you! actually looks great!
Hi mate, are you able to please include a link of where to purchase this diopter? I've searched high and low, but for the life of me, can't find it!
Hey, I got mine on eBay. Try this link to point you in the right direction.

Hi, we sell them www.koodinternational.com/split-field-filters-159-c.asp
What's the camera and the lens?
The camera was a Sony a7RIII and the lens was the 18-105 f4 power zoom (APSC).
