      @wishwellfarms interesting, we have some conflicting information about the amish. We X'd WIC at our market via popular farmer opinion 14 years ago. The next year the market as a whole and sales for farmers where the strongest ever.

    • @wishwellfarms
      @wishwellfarms  2 місяці тому

      I guess that’s a little confusing to me because we have nothing to do with deciding whether WIC participants can shop or not, the farmers don’t have to take their coupons if they don’t sign up but the WIC participants can go anywhere anytime and shop any producer that has signed up with WIC.
      These WIC markets we did are put on by the state office and they only invite select few farmers to go to them and there are usually only three of them. But we accept the coupons at all eight locations throughout the summer in addition.

    I am from Minnesota. Our WIC program is on going. The people can use their coupons at any market any time, as long as the market is authorized. So we get WIC coupons from June 15 until October 31. We had flooding rain end of June, about 8 ¼" in 3 days. A lot of our crops never came back. Some were under water for a week. Like you said, never a normal. Last year we were in a drought. Happy market gardening to you!

      @@bernardkleinschmidt5930 your WIC program is exactly the same as ours. We get them at all eight of our markets until October 31. They also do three special ones where many of the participants pick them up the coupons at a distribution site where they invite a limited amount of farmers to come to.
      Weather conditions are definitely more extreme on the dry end and the wet end more than ever. Fortunately, we haven’t lost any crops due to the rain yet. Hope your season finishes off strong.

    It sure throws a wrench in the gears when your market location is changed at the market. The customers get used to finding you at a specific spot. And, rain is just a damper unless it has been extremely hot before. I hope you get your recharge and feel more rested. Long days have a way of making the next couple of days not so good. Keep sending your videos as we enjoy every one of them.

      At our normal weekly farmers markets were always in the exact same spot for the entire season, but for these three WIC markets it’s pretty much first come first serve or you set up where they tell you to. Things are starting to slow down just a bit but we still have several really big weeks ahead of us but it will all pass soon. Thanks!

    Beautiful content. Thank you for taking your time to share with us.
    How much water do you spend for irrigation (roughly) do you have any river across your land or pond? Do you have water well just for irrigation? If well, how many gallons per min does it provide, has the water level ever gone low?

    • @wishwellfarms
      @wishwellfarms  Місяць тому

      Thank you very much! We pump from a well with a 2 1/2 horse pump that puts out 33 gallons a minute, we hit water at 50 feet and it’s good for 100 gallons a minute and has never gone low. It actually is an artesian well and overflows at 3 gallons a minute 24/7. We also built a small pond to pump out of for frost control on our strawberries, but we no longer grow those. Pumping out the well doesn’t really cost me anything. Maybe just a few bucks extra for electricity each day during the summer.

    • @wishwellfarms

      Hey Paul, yes I’ve grown imperial for many years just didn’t this year. I couldn’t control the weeds well enough when I didn’t grow it on plastic so we use biodegradable plastic on all of our brassicas now and it does great. We used to rubber band all of our cauliflower for many years but with these newer self wrapping varieties, we tend to get them harvested before they start turning yellow so it’s probably been six or seven years since I’ve had to tie any cauliflower.

      Not as easy as you think. You have to get approved through a regional coordinator to drop something off to one of the food banks in Ohio. You gotta remember there’s hundreds of other farmers delivering their leftover produce also so many times the food banks are full. Furthermore, it takes either my time or I have to pay someone else to drive my truck with my fuel to deliver it, it’s not worth it unless it is a huge truck full.
