  • 059 - Using Gibbs Free Energy
In this video Paul Andersen explains how you can use the Gibbs Free Energy equation to determine if a process is spontaneous or not spontaneous. If the ΔG is less than zero the process is spontaneous. If the ΔG is greater than zero the process is not spontaneous. If the ΔG is equal to zero the process is at equilibrium. The ΔH, ΔS, and T are all used to calculate ΔG.

In your example of cold pack, you state that the cold pack has taken heat from the surrounding making it cold, hence enthalpy is positive. You then state that the cold pack is made of Ammonium Nitrate in solid form and breaking it apart turns it into ammonium and nitrate ions, increasing Entropy. You next state that since the delta H value is so big, you overall will have spontaneous reaction. I'm assuming you mean delta S is big here because if delta H is very big, then the overall reaction should be nonspontaneous.

Thank you for your comment. It is weird how a teacher can understand a thing in a way that nobody else, students, can understand it. For me to understand it I needed to understand what the reaction is. In this case their are two different reactions, the ice forming reaction and the ice melting reaction. Then I needed to understand the role of temperature on whether the reaction would occur spontaneously or not depending on the heat energy of the surroundings. So if I place ice in a surrounding temperature of 1000 degrees farenheit, the ice melting will occur spontaneously. If I place water in a surround temperature of 0 degrees kelvin, -459.67 degrees farenheit, the ice forming reaction will occur spontaneously.
