- 059 - Using Gibbs Free Energy
In this video Paul Andersen explains how you can use the Gibbs Free Energy equation to determine if a process is spontaneous or not spontaneous. If the ΔG is less than zero the process is spontaneous. If the ΔG is greater than zero the process is not spontaneous. If the ΔG is equal to zero the process is at equilibrium. The ΔH, ΔS, and T are all used to calculate ΔG.

If I had seen Gibbs free energy explained like this when I was taking thermodynamics, the course would have made more sense.
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
@7:19, when discussing endothermic reaction, he meant to say delta S is "so big," not delta H.
Awesome, I was thinking the same thing, thanks for commenting
Great!!
This guy explains things so well, my AP Chem teacher isnt even this good
lol i think almost all teachers are shit
true true lol
Alyssa Hoffman what is AP
Advanced Placement
same here....by the way are these ap tough
I just want to say THANK you sooooooooooooo much!!! Out of ALL the videos I've watched in a 1hr time span, yours has been the absolute BEST! Thanks a million!

This was sooooooo condensed. Like what? But sooooo effective? LIKE WHAT? MY TEACHER COULD HAVE EXPLAINED IT THIS EASILY BUT INSTEAD LET YOU DO THE BACK WORK? I LOVE YOU!
Not sure if the pun was intended 😅
Oh ym God, thank you so much. I'm currently studying for a chem final and you just saved me a mental breakdown
I feel this!
me now!
Man up ffs
we should all donate a dollar to Mr. Anderson this man deserves it! his explanations are clear and to the point! :)
Cheaper and more helpful than my tuition 🤣
If I can make something that have economically potential energy
I really, really, really love your lessons. They are amazingly helpfull and you are explaining it so understandable! I hope you continue making these videos.

Mr.Anderson!!!! thank u sooo much... u r sooooooo much better than text book.... amazing!!
I watched your videos about entropy and Gibbs free energy and i want to say that they are VERY helpful!!! I understood more about entropy and free energy through these videos than 10 lectures at the university. I really couldn't exactly understand what they physically represent... Thanks!
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
You rock Mr. Anderson! This is the best video on Gibbs free energy that I've seen! Thank you!
U Deep throat?

really helpfull your all entropy enthapy and delta g
i was strugling as i didnt study my previous class and u cleared all concepts in just an hour
lots of love from india
I am seriously going to donate to your website after my exam! Thanks Mr. Anderson❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much. I am in tears.
Thankyou so much!!!!! The concept behind icepacks confused me so much. I watched so many videos before finding this one! Now it makes more sense. Explaining endothermic and exothermic reactions and the heat curve with the ball and the hill helped 100 percent.
you summed up 6 months of my thermodynamics class in 7 minutes
The GOAT. Helped me pass physics in high school and now helping me pass bio in uni.
Awesomely explained. The example of ice to water and vise versa was great. Made everything much clear. Thank you
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
The Water Analogy helped me a lot for the sign conventions, thank you!
GAAH, MAKES SUCH SENSE! Thank goodness I checked your vids for one on entropy and gibbs free energy before doing my chem hw.
Thank you so much! now i finally understand temperature's role in Free Energy
What a great way of explaining this topic.
honestly I love you. You've been helping me out so much with my genetics course and I just discovered you have Chem videos as well. Thank youuuuuu for sharing your knowledge with clarity and detail.
my man you the best!! thank you from nyc you turned on my light bulb! thank you
crazy how spent an hour and a half in class didnt understand anything.
truly thank you
What a great way of explaining method you have! Thank you so much!
Great video, explained things well and simply. Just to clarify, at 7:18 do you mean to day delta S rather than delta H?
+Byron Haywood-Alexander
yes he did
Always that one that’s gotta feel like look at me I’m correcting the teacher, I’m so smart. You knew what he meant. Smh
yep, that throw me off
Diane Love if I didn’t check the comments I woulda been really confused calm down man
@@Racheal700 Stfu.. I was looking for this comment and I'm glad I found it coz it threw me off too.
Thank you, Mr. Anderson!!!
thank you for this very clear explanation. It really helped in my revision
It annoys me when a teacher gives me a really complex explanation about something that can be summoned up in half time. Thank you for making this video to help me pass my College Biology Midterm exam. THANK YOU.
This is so awesome, my chemics exam is tomorrow & you are so helping me out! Thank you!
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
Very love your explanation with the table... very easily to understand>>>> it summarized everything in that square table:)) And yes of course this is the best GIbb free energy lesson I have ever seen!!!!! God bless you

Thank you for explaining things so well. I watch your videos all the time!!
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
Thanks a lot, man! That was really helpful! This is the first time I actually understand Gibbs energy. :-)
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
Thank you for the very clear examples of what the reactions are, ice forming or ice melting, and about the spontaneity of water forming from ice when the temperature of the water's, the system, surroundings is below freezing. You said delta H when you should have said delta S for the cold pack example.
LITERALLY! BEST! TEACHER! ON! EARTH!!!!
Thanks for putting out these videos they helped me get a 1.1 in Bsc Microbiology
i have been watching you for the last 3 years, thank you so much!
This guy is just awesome he can surly explain things so simply. Thank you so much!!! You've helped me a lot with my finals :')
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
Thanks, friend, this is helping me get through summer Organic Chemistry I
i have a chem test tomorrow and this helped me so much!! Thank you!!
In your example of cold pack, you state that the cold pack has taken heat from the surrounding making it cold, hence enthalpy is positive. You then state that the cold pack is made of Ammonium Nitrate in solid form and breaking it apart turns it into ammonium and nitrate ions, increasing Entropy. You next state that since the delta H value is so big, you overall will have spontaneous reaction. I'm assuming you mean delta S is big here because if delta H is very big, then the overall reaction should be nonspontaneous.
Yes he meant delta S.
thanks a lot for this video, really helped me understand
I’ve been studying this topic for weeks now but still the topic seemed fuzzy to me. But it only took him 7 minutes for to make it understandable and simple. Now my life is better. 😂😂 Thank you, Mr. Anderson!!
Jesus loves yall and died for us! Jesus calls for all of us to repent!!!!!!!!! !
Even a high school student like me can understand it after your explanation. You re amazing! :D
My teacher gets frustrated easily when people don’t understand things the first time, it’s frustrating for me bc she doesn’t have patience for us, these videos help
watching this 30 minutes before my exam. and I finally understand!!!!
You just made thing a thousand times clearer with that water and ice example. i wish i watched this video sooner.
this is amazing I can't describe how helpful this video is to me
Thank you so much Mr. Anderson, you helped me pass this semester you're the real nigga! I got two A's because of you

This is a great video! Thank you so much!
Thanks this was really helpful
i discovered free energy 6 months ago but i dont want the authorities to find out !! but i will share this with you anyway . i took many of my household appliances and hooked them all to a large power bar then ran the other end of the extension cord to my neighbors outlet on the side of his house . ever since then i got free energy !!
7:20 i think you meant T delta S value not delta H
thank you, that really helped:)
Thank you so much!! Your explanations are always the best.
This lecture is very helpful, Thank you !

Yes. These two videos, 58 and 59, are just right.
Imagine if every stupid teacher could explain things as easy as this guy did. WOWW
@Garad Gafadhi There are stupid teachers, though.
Thank you for your comment. It is weird how a teacher can understand a thing in a way that nobody else, students, can understand it. For me to understand it I needed to understand what the reaction is. In this case their are two different reactions, the ice forming reaction and the ice melting reaction. Then I needed to understand the role of temperature on whether the reaction would occur spontaneously or not depending on the heat energy of the surroundings. So if I place ice in a surrounding temperature of 1000 degrees farenheit, the ice melting will occur spontaneously. If I place water in a surround temperature of 0 degrees kelvin, -459.67 degrees farenheit, the ice forming reaction will occur spontaneously.
Harsh don't you think to say "stupid teacher"
wish i woulda seen this at the beginning of the semester lmao would've saved a lot of time
Awesome video! Thank you from an AP Chemistry student!
Nice video. Thank you!
VERY HELPFUL. Just like all your videos.
I had such a hard time with this now I understand and not need to memorize thank you alot
Amazing! Great explanation!

you just saved my life, thank you!!!!
Thank you! These videos are much appreciated!
Really helpful !
I sat in a 50 minute lecture this morning, wondering what kind of nonsense is this professor teaching? His monotone voice didn't help either. This wonderful teacher explains it so well, in under 10 minutes also. Thanks!
EXTREMELY HELPFUL!
great! everything is so clear to me now
thanks so much
