I hope they’re all happy. Brought a lot of joy to my life. Bun is/was a superb drummer.
First off, Bun E. Carlos is NOT a dick! I know all the guys in the band, pretty well. I spent 12 years, from 1989 through 2002, hanging out with them, backstage and in hotels. Bun E is one of the nicest guys, on or off the stage. We became friends pretty quickly, because of our mutual love of music. He was very serious when it came to Cheap Trick's music. He is the archivist for the band. He understood what the fans wanted to hear and made the setlists, accordingly. I was at their shows, night after night, and they changed the setlist slightly, all the time, however, when you have the amount of hits that this band has, you dont have room to gut it. I have seen this band live thousands of times in the last 35 years, and never once, in all of those years, was Bun E, or anyone else in the band, a Dick. Like you said, everyone has a bad day, but i have never seen these guys treat a fan unkindly. They love their fans. I know what really happened, on that phone call that day. Both guys over-reacted, and they both had a point to make. I wish they would apologize and move on. Bun E and Robin are both really good people. Whether they don't play together, anymore, or not, i hope that happens.
Don’t leave me hanging! What was the call about?
@@fieryeurochick3194 he did in fact leaves you hanging
@@seanmcguire4747 What a dick, right?
Nope, he's not a dick, at least in my limited time around him. Years ago, I was working as a tech on a commercial he shot for Target. He was nothing but friendly and professional during a nighttime practice session and the following day on set. At one point, he had put on the 'ol shirt and tie and was walking into the studio. I asked him if he wanted to go outside with me to smoke cigarettes before the shoot. He gave me a big smile, "Sorry, I quit that years ago." He chuckled and seemed to get a kick out of that. He seemed like a really cool guy. That's one of my fondest "working with musicians and celebrities" memories.
BUN E. was essential, he had such a cool drumming style & i loved his onstage persona/image.
And his snare drum was pure fire, pure drugs!!
YEP joñe çarlos is great
Cheap Trick is one of the best American rock bands and certainly my favorite American band. I admit that it has been a few years since I have enjoyed hearing them perform live but they were so good and so entertaining for decades. To all the members of Cheap Trick: Thank you for all those years of great music and great memories.
Replacing Bun E. Carlos with Rick's kid always reminded me of Michael Anthony getting fired bc of Eddie's kid. I can't believe the guys who fired Bun E. asked to use his kit & planned on keeping it. Tom & Robin owed Bun E. Carlos a lot. They paid him back by firing him. Raw deal.
Tom had some serious, fairly recent health issues. If Rick's kid played bass, Bun E. would still be there. No loyalty in rock.
Not true.. There's been tension because of Bun E Carlos for years before this issue ever divided them. If Ricks kid wasn't a drummer someone else would have been hired. Rick is a great guy. Bun does have issues that go far beyond the news that was expressed in this video.
@@thebluesrockers in 2001, Bun E took time off. Rick's 2 sons band Harmony Reilly opened, and Daxx played with both bands. In the 2020's Daxx couldn't make a few shows, birth of a child, Robin Taylor Zander filled in on drums. Rick's and Robin's son's are dedicated to Cheap Trick today.
I was at this 2001 show --> ua-cam.com/video/w36Cgilx4Jc/v-deo.html
@@johnnymegabyte I bet that was one kickass concert. glad you got to see them. I've seen quite a few shows back in the day but unfortunately I never got to see Cheap Trick.
my old band took my kit too... freakin bizarre..i got it back...eventually 🙄
@@thebluesrockers You never saw them in concert, but you say there was tension within the band? I was around them, on an off stage, and backstage, from 1989 through 2002, and everyone got along well. I was with Bun E, on the tour bus, at the last show he played, when he did half the show, then flew home for back surgery. Dax played the second half and Bun E supported Dax doing those shows. There weren't any tension between them at that point.
Bun E is one of my all time favorite drummers, but cheap trick is one of my all time favorite bands. Sad this happened.
Bun was such a underrated drummer. Bun E. rocks!! Trust me almost ALL drummers have back issues. That should taken in to consideration when designing set lists and length of shows.
To me, there is no Cheap Trick without Bun E. Carlos. Period.
How many cheap trick songs did Bun E. write though?
@@ourheartscondemnyounot really the point
Peter and Ace Syndrome.
@@ourheartscondemnyou Definitely not my point at all. Cheap Trick has been, and always will be, Robin Zander, Tom Petersson, Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos. That’s the lineup that I grew up with and was a fan of. I didn’t like it when Tom briefly left the band in 1980 and I certainly didn’t like it when Bun was essentially edged out by the other three.
Ok. Cool. So what should the rest of the band have done? Broken up because two of the guys don’t get along? Start a new band with a different name? Doesn’t make sense to me but again, cool.
Love Down, on guitar it's a descending d chord to A minor, easy song to play, but hard to capture that signature melancholy sound that is so unique to Cheap Trick. Robin's vocal on it is superb. Great lyrics to boot, dark, but hopeful. Every teen-age kid has gone through that phase of sitting in your bedroom staring at your walls while going through some sh*t. You either take a walk to shake it off or put on some hi-fi headphones and just close your eyes and crank it up to 11. Music WILL snap you out of it, always without fail! Down and Surrender are the two Cheap Trick songs I learned to cover when I was a kid. I played that vinyl to death, In Color and in Black n' White still spinning on the turn table after all these years.
No Carlos...No Trick!!!
I believe that at a very young age I got into this legend of a rock band only because of Bun E. Carlos. He was just a very cool dude indeed. Thanks Dr.Fukk for filling us in on the latest news.
Excellent video and great rare photos to accompany it! As long as Robin and Rick are around I’ll always go see Cheap Trick live. Love ya Ralph!
LOVE YOU!
I dig seeing all the photos, too!
It was disappointing that they tried stiffing Bun E. financially, considering he is 25% owner of the 'brand'. Bun E. had no choice but to file a lawsuit and rightfully so. Moral to story: Bun E.'s no dummy, so don't try to pull the wool over his eyes, don't even go there..
Wow, I'm blown away. My all-time favorite Cheap Trick song is Downed, and at this point I gave up hope that anyone else liked it. The band never really played it, and I had never heard anyone else talk about it. Didn't expect to hear you praise it like that at the end of the video, right on bro! 💪🤘
Recently got more deeply into cheap trick catalogue and I agree with you downed is great (that and big eyes from that album are both top tier). The lyrics are not superficial and the guitar and melody just strikingly great, Beatle- esque but still wholly a new thing too.
I totally agree! Downed is my favorite also. Thing is, I didn't hear it, first, from Cheap Trick. I heard it first, covered by the early formation of the band Son Volt, headed by guitarist and founding member of Uncle Tupelo. I was blown away by the ominous start of the song, but only built up and blowing my doors in during faster jam. My girlfriend at the time hated that song . She didn't low to high tempo songs in general. Check out Jay Farrar(son Volt) cover of Downed? Great cover
@@senor1100 Will do!
There are great drummers and then there's Bun E Carlos. Like Ringo, he had a way of making a groove really just; magical! and with just the right amount of tasteful fills. Cheap Trick don't have what I call the juice ( that perfect meter that oozes groove) without him
I'm glad to say I was not able to catch this band in the 80s and 90s,why?blessed to see the band at Robinsonville,MS in my home state even!at sam's town on 02, front row, original line up,after that I was satisfied with my concert life journey, the ending was an apex.......
I only saw cheap trick once in 77 opening for Kansas and they were great.
Howeve the only interaction was with Bun E Carlos when i asked him to settle an argument about that show with my sister who thought they had opened for Boston and he got back to me within minutes and confirmed it was Kansas (I Knew it lol )
He was very gracious and friendly and I loved his drumming but found out hes a stand up guy so my experience was more than positive
Back in 1999 I went to work for Cheap Trick as Bun E's drum tech. For the first week to 10 days Bun put me through my paces. But after he was satisfied that I could handle the job he and I had a lot of good times together. As a matter of fact, we still talk with each other to this day. And I find it hard to believe that you've been around the band that much and thought Bun was a d***. I beg to differ with you sir. But knowing what I do about the band, your report was fairly accurate. And I go back with Daxx to his Harmony Riley days. He's a monster drummer. But who wouldn't be with Bun E. giving you a lesson here and there, and helpful drumming tips. 🥁😎☮️🥁
Excellent video! Stuff I didn’t know! Thank you for sharing this with us!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
time has left us with fragment bands now
Cheap Trick was always my favorite band when i was growing up. First saw them in San Francisco August 16th 1977 as the opening act for KISS. Have gone on to see them around 25 times live since that first show in 77. Bun's drumming style gave them a huge sound especially with Tom comlementing the rythum section with his roaring 12 string bass. Seen them in 2016 opening for Aerosmith with Daxx on the drums, and Cheap Tricks sound and timing had changed. Still enjoy them tho!!! 👍🎸
Met Rick and Robin a few months ago........Generous with their time. Bun E. is Greatly missed,,,
I grew up in Freeport, Illinois, just a short drive from where Cheap Trick are from, which is Rockford, Illinois. I've seen Cheap Trick in concert many times. The first time I saw them, the opening band was Bon Jovi. That was around 1984 or 1985. I hope to see Cheap Trick many more times. They put on a great show!
I probably wouldn't have listened to as much Cheap Trick if it wasn't for you, great video as always 🤘🏻
AWESOME!
Same here! Ralph is a multimedia super influencer.
I grew up in Rockford and got to know Bun a bit in the 90s. He's a great guy. Rick was fun to hang out with too. The only time I saw Zander was at Rick's house and he ignored me entirely. I was surprised at how tall he was until I saw he was wearing boots with 3" heels. He was dressed for show too and it was just a weekday afternoon. He is a good singer though, gotta give him that.
Love the old photos!
I remember reading something about Bun being pissed at Robin because of certain performance dates being cancelled because Robin wanted to be there for his child's first day of kindergarten. Robin supposedly freaked on Bun.
Love this Band, saw them Whenever they came to Australia, i always loved Bun, he was a great drummer and a lovely guy, as they all were.
Glad they're still going. !!
Thankyou for the ❤️
I never knew Bun E. let the band use his drum kit after he was ousted. My first concert ever was Cheap Trick opening for Aerosmith back in '04. I appreciate your take on the matter.
Live long enough as a hero, eventually you'll be a villain.
When I was 19, I worked in a gas station in Rick Neilson’s home town. I had the misfortune of meeting him there. I’m not a fan boy but, it’s not everyday you see a rock star. I didn’t ask for an autograph or act stupid but I’ll tell ya, I have never been treated with more disdain in my life. Left a bad taste in my mouth. I have no time at all for someone like that.
That sucks
@@KevinWiegers-nr4tm Well don't leave us hanging... What happened?!? What did he do to make you feel like that? And, you mean Rockford, right? I'm from a even smaller town about 35 minutes away- Rock Falls, IL. I've seen them in concert a couple dozen times and have met Rick and Robin at an autograph signing promo for their Woke up with a Monster lp in Rockford- I thought Rick was a-hella cool, funny, and down to earth as only a small towner can. Please share your story!
As with all relationships there are many dynamics. Back in 1977 when I heard Cheap Trick's music, it was fresh and rockin'. a lot of that sound was Bun E Carlos drumming sound and feel. It was such a shame, not knowing how or why he left the band. The music really spoke for itself, and I thought it had great musical chemistry. I miss Bun and his playing and their mutual collaboration. Best Wishes to all.
Yeah cheap trick is one of my favorite bands. I've seen them twice before and it's always been a really good time. I met Bun and he seemed to be a really down-to-earth cool guy to me. Robin was easy going too
I hated when Tom Peterson left back in the day !!!
Not happy Bun is gone now !!!!
Seen Cheap Trick many moons ago in Saginaw Michigan. They opened for ZZ Top on the Eliminator tour . 84-85 ish
No matter what his personality is like Mr C is an individual voice on the kit and very much part of Cheap Trick's unique sound. Now that he's gone it's very noticable. Daxx is a competent player that can clearly hold down the gig but honestly there are 1000s of other pro drummers that could do the same. Saying that if relationships break down, that's it as I seen in the many bands that I've been in myself. A pity but it is what is.
great slideshow man.
That was a cool pic with James Honeyman Scott!
None of this impacts my personal life, so I dont really care,
... not my problem. I jusy greatly enjoy their music as I have since I was a kid.
It can be tough for a fan in these situations, but this matches up with what I've always heard with the conflict being Robin and Bun E. It would be great for them to get to the point where Bun E played "special appearances" while Daxx continued as the touring drummer for all the other shows. It's tough getting older, and this seems to affect the lead singer and drummers the most. Robin still sounds great (maybe a notch below his lofty heights, but still). It's probably better with Daxx on drums on tours of any length and he plays well and has been contributing backing vocals from what I've seen as well.
It was a Sgt. Pepper residency
Keep up the good work Almost Human..................and blessings!!!
Thank you and likewise
Some rarely seen images -- well done!
Great video
Happy Birthday today(May 9) to Tom Petersson. Cheers! 🥨
Saw CT 10 times,10 different years. All were with Bun E. Started in 1978 opening for Foreigner's Double Vision tour. Was there mostly to see Cheap Trick, but was a good show. Last CT album i bought was Bang, Zoom, Crazy...Hello.
Bun was such a great drummer! He was from the old school type of players and his swing was fabulous and added so much to manny of the bands classic songs! Like listen to his performance on one of their well known songs The Dream Police? His playing on that song is so representative of what he did and the groove he held down with Tom Petersson especially notable on Surrender and I Want You To Want Me! It’s sad he’s not apart of the group!
Love cheap trick even when they were down and out playing Hallandale beach horse track. Did you catch any of them?
Saw them twice at the Hallandale race track in 2003 and again maybe in 2004 or 05. I remember the sound guy screwed up the monitors of the opening of Ain't that a Shame and for the first verse you couldn't hear Robins vocals
Cheap Trick phenomenal. Best debut album nobody talks about. Met them here in Buffalo NY everyone but Bun E. Saw them numerous times. Talk about Beatles songs saw them in Vegas doing Sgt. Peppers with orchestra phenomenal show they did a great job. Actually met Geoff Emerick the Beatles producer & engineer extrodinare. Great night.

I live in Rockford IL home of Cheap trick... went to Harlem high same as Robin Zanders....we had off campus lunch in the late 80's and Buddy used live on Alpine rd . Right by Jerry's hamburger.&would see him there and was always cool ...Miles Nielsen was a big local act as well as his daughter and is really good..Nielsen Music shop on 7th was owned by Nielsen's .
Small correction on the Vegas residency... It was not "Dream Police", but rather the "Sgt. Pepper Revisited Show" which started out at the Hilton and then moved to the Paris. The "Dream Police" residency was at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee.
I could be wrong but I think they also did the "Dream Police" residency is North Florida. I think.
Yes, but it wasn't a residency, it was a New Years Eve 2011 "Dream Police" show with Orchestra at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg.@@almosthuman56
I agree, I saw Cheap Trick warm up for Kiss and Bun E. was a dick! The other guys were cool. It's been a bummer for a long time now. But Daxx does a good job. I just miss the iconic Bun E. Carlos with his trademark cigarette behind the kit. Thanks Ralph!
Your the first person I seen that spoke out against him in this comment section, but I read shit about him years ago, and some fans said the said kind of shit. But other people have said he's cool. I guess he's a little Bipolar.. haha.. Peace.
@@thebluesrockers Or maybe he caught him on a bad day. Geez
What happened with bunny? You talked to him
Cheap Trick RULES!!!!🏁
1:31 -John Deacon in a Cheap Trick shirt.
Totally agree, Downed is awesome. And it's funny actually quite similar BOC's Great Sun Jester, which was also produced by Werman.
AWESOME band.
Cheap Trick my favorite band since '78, but sorry guys, not the same band without Mr. Bun E. Carlos...
I've seen them during their heyday, and saw them recently, not the same, and definitely not better...whole different vibe...
I've always heard that Bun E. works behind the scenes in the Cheap Trick organization nowadays. I heard he runs their social media, is the bands archivist and book keeper.
No dog in the hunt, but Bun deserves to be paid. They all seem to be decent people, in any event. In my opinion, a band is almost never the same or as good without its original members in it. GnR is an example. Rush would be an exception to that though, since Peart wasn't an original member.
I know nothing about any of the members, but have loved their music since Budokan. A trusted friend told me carlos, was a Douchebag about a simple Autograph once
such great songwriters
Nailed it! Dax is great,Bun E gets his money and this is one of the greatest bands ever. Dax, Robin Taylor& Miles can carry CT into the future as time goes on. 😎
Yes, Bun E. was great with Cheap Trick. The problem was with Bun E. they played 65-70 minutes and did not mix it up a lot. With Daxx they are getting 90-120 minute shows with a lot more deep cuts. I saw them just before 9-11 at a festival in the Chicago area and I was surprised that they played almost 2 hours. The last time I saw them headline with Bun E. it was a 70 minute show, and pretty much every time I saw them headline thoughout the 80's and 90's it was the same. They also seemed to be having more fun with Daxx too. And, he is no slouch on the drums too. Not Bun E., but still very good.
Bun is an amazing drummer, watch the Rock Hall Of Fame gig they sound amazing with him, not a knock on Ricks son but you can tell the difference for sure.
Bun E. Was basically fired over nothing a Cheap Trick. Same with Michael Anthony and Van Halen, that left a bad taste in my mouth and tainted the band so much. You don’t kick out a hard working core member. It’s just not right.
You are definitely saying the truth,I know they got their own lives, but it ain't my Business, but Mike A. He's a professional all the way, talks good, never slagging. Everybody could learn from Mike
@ yeah Michael Anthony is still going and still as tight as a metronome.
That's right,a few years ago I was looking at UA-cam and saw 1981 Memphis show that I attended was on there, bootleg but cool nonetheless
Van Halen I mean
When they performed their 3 song set at R&R Hall of Fame, I can't forget how Rick had like 7 of his other guitars right in front of his amps in plain sight, on some sort of display. Who does that?? I'm surprised his sneaker collection wasn't there for all to see too. Robin & Tom better look over their shoulders in case Rick's other kids are looking for work.
Stupid comment
Robin's kid also filled in for both Tom and Rick
So, their split was messy for sure, but when I was 13 I had to leave everything I knew behind due to my dad's job (which, I get it, but it still sucks). Robin has said he feels bad about not being there more for his first 2 children, and I can totally understand not wanting to uproot your family for 50 extra shows in Las Vegas. I'm on Robin's side. He seems to have a happy family with Pam, Sailor & Taylor, and that's great.
Know Bun E. Know Cheap Trick! No Bun E. no Cheap Trick.
Agree , huge DB. Move on people Bun E is not coming back , thank god!
Bun E got lazy and didn't want to tour. Dax is like a good kick in the ass for Cheap Trick. You are right Rick, Robin, and Tom were always down to earth. Bun E was always in a pissed off mood.
He's F-ing 74, give him a break!
Too bad about Bun getting a raw deal. Like you I like Cheap Trick. Always have. I kinda fell off after All Shook Up. At that time it just seemed to me that they were getting soft like PISS and it just seemed like kid stuff at that time for me. Sooo...Priest, Maiden, Scorpions etc. it was for me at that time. I l@@ked at it like growing up musically and lots of my friends were moving on as well. However, you like to do the album comparisons right? Here's one to consider: How about Cheap Tricks debut against any other rock record you can think of? To me, they never made anything heavier than that and I believe It's one of the best hard rock records of the seventies. I think it will stand up to anything out there. That MOFO will melt your face man. It took a minute to grow on me but dayyumm it is just straight up in your face. Too bad they went more power pop after that one. Anyhoo just a suggestion. Rock on...
Bun E. seems to hold the most CT deep-track live recordings that could fill 10 box-sets. Cheap Trick would be better to resolve their issues with Bun E. to open-up the back-catalogue for fans to purchase in-earnest. He will likely never return as a drummer at this point in their career, yet his massive contribution to the band in its heyday is the stuff legends are made of. Cheap Trick IMO are the American Beatles.
Stripped down, keto version of the band without the Bun IMHO. Been a fan since '77 and will continue to support them. ✌️❤️🎶🎵
They’re probably not going to buy out Bun E, but we have seen Journey and Motley Crue try to push founding members out of the band and try to cut them from the band business. CT will just keep working tirelessly on the road as long as possible, and likely to be a Budokan50 tour. Rick did most of the songwriting so he really could retire, just collect royalty checks and sell his guitars and memorabilia off - and as a collector he already knows how much all of that stuff would sell at auction.
2:36- Was that late James Honeyman Scott getting "choked"? If it isn't it sure looks like him.
It's him.
My most favorite Cheap Trick songs were in the movie Heavy Metal.
Love C.T. seen them in the early 80s play at Opryland. A terrible show it was with a short Playlist. Have seen them many times since then and I'm still amazed. Favorite album was Dream Police.
Saw Cheap Trick a bunch of times in the early day and Bun E. was the only one for the job. Zander was and is a phyco.
I didn’t realize Robin was that much of an ego maniac. Bun E helped give the band character.
I was lucky enough to see CT with Bun in 2009. It was my one and only CT show and I have no interest in the band since Bun left.
Saw them recently. Ouch
Bun E. Carlos is an American musician who has a net worth of $8 million.
One of the best groove making drummers in the business. But my two favorite drummers of all time are #1 John Bonham & #2 Bill Ward.
But I love Les Binks, & Peter Criss. Yes, I liked Peter Criss better than Eric Car & Eric Singer for Kiss. He was a better groove maker IMO. But there's many great drummers. Bun E Carlos was a great drummer too..
Dream police tour Fort Wayne Indiana watch mr Carlos wipe out his drum set on stage A little intoxicated Nielsen kept us entertained while they cleaned up the mess and slid in a backup drummer The explanation was as the Singer pinched one side of His nose With his index finger and Responded he had too much😮 he went to the ER..
Never happened….
Quite a business quagmire...but they are a touring machine...kinda like Chicago ...you're in for life..
Yeah Bun E is a great drummer but him not being there doesn’t make or break Cheap Trick for me. It’s funny when people say it’s not Cheap Truck because he’s not in the band. 😄 If it were Robin or Rick I’d agree.
In Australia they pretty much only had 3 or so hits. Seen em support def lep n someone else. Dream police is an all time fave but they aren't hugely popular here .
You're probably not old enough to remember. Go check out the Live at Bodokan
great album. Also look up the song "Gonna To Raise Hell" they have several great early album. Some hit & miss tunes, but great shit too.
@thebluesrockers none of that was popular here I'm 51 .. I like CT but they were never huge here.
@@diamondd2778 Well, Cheap Trick may not have been all that big in Australia mate. But, they were inducted into the R&RHoF, so they had to be doing something right to get there, right? Plus, it's not only about hit songs a band had that solidifies their success in music my friend. What a lot of people seem to overlook or simply don't know is the fact Cheap Trick wasn't just this rock band they were put in a box & known for. Believe it or not Cheap Trick were very influential on a lot of future bands in different genres of music including Pop, Punk, Hard Rock, & Grunge music for starters. If you really dig deep & listen to Cheap Trick's B-side tunes & not just the mainstream hits they had on the radio. I'd bet you'd have a bigger appreciation for the band. Just saying... ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😜🤘
I've always thought Robin is great, but... Bun E looks like a normal guy, and Robin now looks like the Mickey Rourke of rock. Kind of says a lot.
I've seen poison twice not bad.if it had been trickster or nelson that would be different.yes i do like cheap trick 👍
I haven't been to a Cheap Trick show or bought any music or merch since the band screwed Bun E. Carlos. As long as there is no Bun E. they can suck it.
Too bad old people can’t behave like adults.
No Bun E. no Cheap Trick.
Seen Trick many times also, though not as many as you. One memorable show was 1980 in Fargo, ND at Red River Valley State Fair. After the show my brother and I were at the Beer Gardens and got to hang with Rick for a short bit and drank a few Beers with Robin . Coolest, most down to earth guy. Ran into Tom briefly once after a different show also and very nice guy as well. Never met Bunny so can't comment on his personality, but I don't doubt what you say about Bunny based on what I have heard.
Bun E was the best musician in the band.
Funny they made it over 40 years, and now they have differences??? Wow
Bun E, got me into drumming, and its a bummer that he is a prick to his fans.
I guess he smoked one cigarette too many while being at work...
With no Bunny, it's not Cheap Trick.............same with STYX, no Dennis DeYoung, it's not STYX.
Speaking of gone, Do you recall when all of Rick`s explorer guitars used to have a decal image of a female on them in a pose with her legs open? Looks like the woke SJW feminists have banned them from the internet. I searched and can't find a single one. SMH
wow, that's hard to believe. I remember seeing them too..
