What is the Stream of Consciousness?

  • The stream of consciousness refers to the passage of many thousands of images and ideas through our minds every day, very few of which we manage to arrest and examine in any detail. Accurate self-knowledge depends on patiently sitting on the bank of the stream of consciousness - identifying and extracting insights.

That's what I love about meditation. Being able to just sit back and listen to what's going on in your mind. It's really fascinating.

Is anyone else constantly aware of their own consciousness? Like throughout the day, whatever you're doing, you are so highly aware of how your brain is processing everything that you can't make room for things like emotions. This usually results in a complete indifference to anything or anyone's perception of you. I think this makes me come across as either very aloof or intimidatingly serious in real life.
Please tell me I'm not alone xD

Perfect. Freud said " that we are more conscious when we are sleeping." What a perfect timing. Yesterday I wrote about how entangled we are to objects in our consciousness. We need to pay close attention and drop one by one, and just feel the emptiness that fulfill us. But we tend to like being entertained.

I wonder when we actually started to speak to ourselves inside our mind. I mean, the first word for many of us maybe mama or baba or whatever. I always wondered what exactly was the moment when I first actually spoke using language. When I first actually thought of something or someone in a constructive way that can be expressed.... When does it occur? Fetal life? Infant? If so, what language was it... Does it have any influence?

Do a video on how marijuana can change the way your thoughts fire!
When I smoke, I'm able to intuitively understand concepts that I struggle to get when sober. I get constant "epiphanies" and "eureka!" Moments.
But then I have a hard time holding on to those thought processes long term. I'll forget about the idea once I sober up and won't remember it until I get high again....once I light up I tend to get those same thought processes back that I had last time I got high.
Since I started smoking 2 years ago, I have become more connected with my emotions and have gained the ability to think objectively about things....empathy is a huge thing I've gained as well. I can actually "feel" what the people around me feel. I can pick up on things/details that I never would have given much thought to.

It's a really interesting topic. I guess the thing is Alain might like to talk about things he's had personal experience with; I really have no idea if he's ever done weed or not. But it's a good topic.. I feel that I benefited immensely from a terrible weed experience full of anxiety where I thought I was going to die, in a similar (maybe smaller) way that bad psychedelic trips can promote growth and self exploration. Not that I haven't had good weed experiences. For me it's too challenging to partake in regularly so I'm sure it changes drastically with different psychologies.

whenever i had these "eureka" moments, I would write them down. then when I read them when I was sober these epiphanies didn't make much sense (but some did at least somewhat), but it made 100% perfect sense while I was high.
One time I got so high I thought I knew the truth to everything. I kept telling my friend that I knew everything. And because of that, the government was gonna kill me. Because they knew somehow.

    • @Jaikay1
      @Jaikay1 7 років тому

This can be true - but quite often those 'eureka!' moments are just a feeling rather than a tangible idea. It is possible to think outside the box and solve problems with weed though, don't get me wrong. It's just important not to lie to ones self in order to see truth.

What you enjoy more is a matter of taste, but there's no doubt that Joyce actually does the thing called stream of consciousness better (better than anyone)
It's "But this was one way of knowing people, she thought: to know the outline, not the detail, to sit in one's garden and look at the slopes of a hill running purple down into the distant heather" (Woolf) vs "Wife locked up at home, skeleton in the cupboard. Allow me to introduce my. Then they trot you out some kind of nondescript, wouldn't know what to call her. Always see a fellow's weak point in his wife. Still there's destiny in it" (Joyce)

I think this video isn't entirely accurate of the workings of the mindstream, at least by my observations and my understanding of it. Sure, the mind may wander a lot, especially when you're bored and not doing anything, but this video makes it seem that the mind is completely incapable of focusing on one topic for any length of time. It makes it seem like we've all got ADD. It's entirely possible to have a logical progression of thoughts, especially when you're focused, just like that man in the train worried about his political career.
It's when you're unfocused that these thoughts start to wander more wildly. When you're just laying in bed, or listening to a boring lecture, your thoughts will drift from last nights dinner to cats to funny cartoons to sexual fantasies. But this is not our nature 100% of the time.

Joyce's Ulysses (1922) is by no means the first instance in which the 'stream of consciousness' technique is deployed in literature. His 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' (1916) is, generally, considered the first, although there are many late nineteenth-century writers who anticipate the technique. Personally, I consider Virginia Woolf's 'The Mark on the Wall' (1917) to be the one of the finest early uses of this narrative device.

My mind is mainly analysing and examining pre-packaged content from outside. The way you describe thoughts in this video, it doesn't resonate. They don't flit by quickly, they don't change with no chain of logic... and sometimes there are no thoughs at all, when I'm "receiving" the outside content (patterns and impressions that ARE random and do change quickly).

How does one go about developing the "art of introspection"? My mind has a constant stream of "noise" that seems to pervade my every moment. Trying to divide it up into smaller items to mull over never really works as the "noise" never stops flowing. It seems the quieter my environment, the louder my mind becomes. Almost as it's trying to get my attention with a train horn instead of a gentle nudge, and the train horn becomes all I hear.

Now my thoughts do not move as they used to. I can still feel the stream of ideas, but it's as though my mind's eye has gone dull. It's gotten better. I don't think it's healed.

All of this reminds me of Robin Williams's comedy. He verbally expressed everything, or at least a large portion of what was going on inside his mind. He would strike sentence after sentence with lightning speed discussing utterly different topics in a way that was simply hilarious. He was articulate in his expression and free of any boundries so he'd keep going on and on because the audience always loved it. For the normal person it's hard to keep up with the pase and catch everything even after replaying the video of him being interviewed a couple times. And there he was, jumping from subject to subject, changing his facial expression, voice and accent to make an impression, joining a dialogue with himself and never running out of things to say. Quite extraordinary.

Stream of consciousness, you say... Hmm, to me the only moment I sort of experience this is when I'm writing. Suddenly, there are so many things to write about and so many perspectives on a given issue so I end up rambling in a more or less clear way. This often happens when I'm having a conversation with someone online and because there's so many things I want to mention I sometimes feel like I'm thinking very forward and my response turns into a monologue or a letter. It's weird and can be bothersome, because at some point it gets tiring as much as it's satisfying.
Compare that to my mind which is a quite place in general, almost like I had no unconscious thoughts flowing through it except of random earworms maybe. It literally takes a conscious effort to think, some starting point - otherwise my mind will stay quiet. I feel that because I've been not very talkative person for most of years, when I start to write and so at lenght, it's my mind trying to catch up on thinking so to speak...

really well explained. The best way to "master introspection" in order to pick out the nuggets of gold from amongst our stream of consciousness is through meditation. That clears the mind of some of the 'chaff' so that when we do sit down to really think about something it's easier to know and access our original thought. It does take time, patience and perseverance. But it's worth it.

James Joyce's attempt at writing streams of consciousness into his stories reminds me a lot of my own attempts to orate my own stream of consciousness when I have the privacy to do so. Topics change quickly, are uncensored, more emotionally biased/based etc. Meanwhile when I try to mentally observe my stream of consciousness it's much more chaotic, obviously more illustrated/animated, and thoughts and ideas in both picture and language form seem to overlap, occurring simultaneously, and "bump into each other" in all of the chaos.

  • @alchemicalsoul8023

Psychedelics basically help you do this. They focus your attentions inwards and help you detach in some way that you're able to analyse that stream of consciousness and take in the information, both from within your mind and from the external world. The hallucinating factor of psychedelics is in actuality your own mind processing and molding the visual input to make sense of what it is seeing. It draws from past experience to actively assess the information that is receiving in the current moment or present. This is drawn from my experience with psychedelics, in no way shape or form am i implying this to be true to for others, this just my opinion.

What he is portraying is not consciousness... it's your mind projecting itself onto you. Which you do when wandering off or when dreaming, visualizing... 'being in your mind'. It's "the state of being conscious; awareness of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings". So consciousness is the AWARENESS of what he is describing. It's a big difference.

The problem is that we have no free will in what our intuitions and feelings are. If you are lucky and your biological makeup and your base intuitions/desires and talents match up with societal values and expectations then you are set to have a relatively internally conflict free life allowing your energies to pursue your true desires and happiness with the full sanction of society.
What happens when you are not so lucky with the biological lottery? Pedophiles have desires that they do not choose and they seem to be prevalent and persistent in their psychological makeup. They are given desires that can not be fulfilled and are forced to use their energy either fighting these desires or seeking surreptitious ways of fulfilling them. The same can be said of drug addicts/alchoholics. I can not pass judgement on people that have desires that I do not have to deal with. I did not choose my desires, they simply just are. I just see my life and my true self and desires as a lucky throw of the random dice of the universe, no free will involved.

I think what you're left with in that case then, ie. when you're well aware that you didn't choose your life, your preferences, or your inclinations, is gathering up the best tools possible for handling who and what you are in a constructive manner. So much of fate really comes down to the question of how many of your options are you aware of, which are the best options, will internal pressures allow you to exercise those options, etc.. It's part of why I really think people need to focus a lot more on medicinal uses of imagination and psychology - it makes a big difference in terms of outcomes.

He paused, thinking to himself of the readers of his comment, and how many of them might be read his comment while completely naked, or eating pies, perhaps chicken or that nice curried vegetable that he liked. It doesn't matter, he thought, there were few of them that would bother to hit 'Read more' , and the chances of finding one of them that was naked, eating a chicken of curried vegetable pie were slim. Even more slim was the chance of them replying. He felt depressed, and took another bite of his own pie. He had written this same comment 3.14 times. That was enough, he thought, as his pie repeated on him.

You can talk directly to your subconscious through an exercise. It
starts slow but it works. Lay down with your eyes closed, relax and get
into a calm state. Imagine a door in front of you. Open it and walk into
a empty white room. Across from you is a small cabinet door on the
wall. Maybe 1x1 ft. Now relax for a second and take a deep breath. Now
when you open this door you're not going to see anything inside. It's
just black. But when you do decide to open it, tell the awareness inside
a problem you're having and that you need help with it. Now walk out of
the white room and close the door.
The idea is to directly press you're most important problems onto the subconscious. The majority of people have no idea how powerful your subconscious can be when you train it to take orders.
