I must have seen this movie 100 times growing up in the 80-ies. The soundtrack was awesome and the movie was super. Brian Blessed was my all time favourite in this movie.
Saw this when it first came out. The whole audience boo-ed and hissed every time Ming the Merciless came on the screen. It was like being at the Saturday morning pictures again! (But this time there was no one under 23)
He was ugly as sin and way too old for me but I had a massive crush on him each time it came to saying that part. I'll mark it down as weird stages teen girls go through.
Sherpa Cast In 1980, I was a mere prepubescent 7 years old kid and yet, I remember to this very day that Princess Aura was responsible for my first ever boner. Not making this up. It was during the torture scene, Muti was cuffed down on a table in a skin-tight hot pink patent leather jumpsuit with an open back and she was being whipped. I didn’t even fully grasp how risqué that was at the time but I distinctly remember discovering for the first time, that it could move by itself. Imagine my surprise.🤣 A funny feeling in my happy place. The scene STILL gets a rise out of me. 😆
I think he was also in an action Tv series in the mid 80s called The Highwayman In where he drove a futuristic big rig that converted into a helicopter. Aussie actor Jocko( from Energized battery ads during that time, very loud, brash, n bombastic. Yelled "OY" a lot too) The show only lasted 1 season. Wasn t bad. Least the truck/help didn t talk.
I remember seeing this during my last year of college. I grew up as a kid watching reruns of the old Flash Gordon serials. I laughed my way through the whole picture but I enjoyed every moment of it! I STILL enjoy every bit of the movie to this day.
Although most are opposed to remakes, I was intrigued at the over-the-top visually director McG's possible vision for a Flash Gordon remake. That was until Disney decided to kill it after Tron Legacy didn't fair so well. Now, Taika Waititi is attached to an animated Flash Gordon film. Just pray that TW doesn't give us another ridiculous comedy franchise killer.
Actually, for THAT matter, I've always found THIS flick a lot more interesting and entertaining than the SW movies that were already out at the time (FIRST one, Empire Strikes Back).
Minty, we are subscribers, but we are also working backwards watching your entire library of videos. Tonight we watched this movie because of your recommendation...and it was AWESOME! Thank you!
Every now and then you need something cheesy and over the top in a flashy way as something different. And all the bizarre cocaine induced art deco uniforms and designs were awesome. I can see why some people don't like it, but man it was fun as hell. And yeah, Queen outdid themselves with the theme.
There's a certain wonderful irony that Kurt Russell turned the film down for its campy slap stick nature. Only 6 years later he'd be in a certain movie that was exactly campy and slap stick in the best ways. Now what was that film called... oh yeah, Big Trouble in Little China ;) He would've been awesome as Flash :)
He got the joke with China... he was the dumb sidekick who thinks he's the hero... in Flash, he'd be the hero who doesn't realise how dumb he actually is... not a fun thing to play.
Ah, great choice Minty! That was such perfect 80s camp! And Queens second greatest soundtrack. I'm sure you could guess my choice for first. After all, there can be only one. ;)

I remember seeing this as 8 year old kid in 1980, I thought it was the most amazing movie I had ever seen, especially with Queen's Flash Gordon song, still gives me goosebumps 40 years later!
Zarkoff's beating the mind drain was never explained ("even a song by the Beatles, anything I could remember, it armored me girl, they couldn't take it from me"). James Bond opens doors by blasting the controls...gets bored with his rifle, picks up Optimus Prime's Gun 5 years before transformers conceptualized. The Imperial Navy have a fleet of ships but they can't chase down a rocketcycle...come on this Mongo, not LA. The city defense guns (all 6 of them) fire a barrage at the rocketcycle hitting it more at least once, causing no damage. They manage to launch Ajax on 30 seconds notice which is commendable, but unrealistic. On it's return the city defenses can't take down a war rocket with holes in it and on fire. Ming is killed by the nose of the ship in a one in a million chance accident. What's not to like?
I really always loved since I was a kid the lines written by Frank Herbert when Ming the Merciless was speaking to Doctor Zarkoff about how Ming goes from place to place to see if the planet he sends these catastrophes to just imagine it to be a natural occurrence or their own god being angry at them. But if that planet has a scientist who understands and reasons as Zarkoff did then they must be destroyed. And Ming snarls at him "Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror." I don't think a better line has ever been rendered in any Sci fi series without Flash Gordon there would not have been Star Wars or Star Trek.
I beg to differ. Yes, Ming's line is absolutely marvelously written. But for me, the most memorable movie line ever is "According to scientists at NASA, this morning's unprecedented solar eclipse is no cause for alarm". It's from a totally camp 1980 movie called...oh wait.
My first movie at the cinema was Superman: The Movie in 1978, either just before I turned one or shortly after. The 2nd was Flash Gordon, the 3rd/4th being at a double matinee were E.T. and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi! Finally the 5th, being Popeye!
You missed a detail: There's a minor character named Fico. He's a thin, bald man played by none other than Richard O'Brien, the writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show who also plays Riff Raff.
@@jasonhughes3152 Cut him some slack. He's British, and if you're British and speak with a British dialect, you're automatically viewed as smarter than anyone else.

One of my favorites, also! Can't beat Queen for the music. Did a little looking into who may have voiced Flash, and Peter Marinker turns up as a good candidate. His IMDB trivia says its him, but IMDB isn't always correct. Listen to clips of him.
I'm friends with his daughter, I asked her after someone suggesting it on a forum. It was Peter Marinker, known her for years and her dad did the voice in one of my favourite ever movies lol
Loved this film. Costume design and set design worked perfectly to bring Mongo to life. Peter Wyngarde was sublime as Klytus. Everything gelled to produce a popcorn martclass. I see that it gets only 6.5 on the IMDB - outrageous.
Sam Jones (without the middle J) was in "Jane and the Lost City" in 1987. The movie is a comedy Indiana Jones type adventure based on a British ww2 comic strip. Worth watching if you liked Flash Gordon.
Flash Gordon, though wasn’t received well but has thankfully managed to become cult and to its rightful status, just because of how excellent and fantastic it is. The look, characters, plot and especially the soundtrack by Queen which is infinitely magnificent. It all just works completely, as it is truly a masterpiece in its own right. I hope it’s looked back on from generations and generations to come. Though, they may make an animated version which would be cool, it’s a massive shame that there was going to be a trilogy of Flash Gordon films but, it didn’t hit the box office to well, so wasn’t possible. Plus, of problems between Sam J Jones and Dino De Laurentiis, though they have gladly made up. It would be good though if they did another live action film about Flash Gordon, but it will be nice see an animated version of it as well.
Love this movie! Awesome soundtrack... Saw it the first time when my daughter was a baby, though I really thought it was earlier than 1980. She's a fan too, of the movie, the soundtrack and of course, Queen. It's generational... her daughters are fans too.
"VOTT Do ju mean... FLASH Gordon apprrrroaching?" I swear, together with "Masters of the Universe" it is one of the BEST low-budget trashy Sci-Fi Fantasy films EVER! Something where you can actually dive in and completely forget everything around you. An absolute MUST WATCH!!
12:30 Sam J Jones did briefly star in a TV adventure/sci-fi series in the early '80s called "The Highwayman". Something about highway police in the near future, sort of "Mad Max Lite"
Hey Minty; Sam Jones actually was in a ton of movies and shows since. He also played flash Gordon in a short lived tv series in 2007. He also played the spirit/Denny Colt in the 1987 tv movie version. He mostly had cameos and currently has two movies in preproduction.
I looked through Wikipedia page history... This was only added to the wiki in October 2019, and then to The Flash Gordon Page Dec 2019. So Minty couldn't have had it at the time this video was made. Peter's page is about to be purged due to lack of content, but he was a "professional voice and dramatic actor" It was likely after this video that it was added to IMDb.
*Okay 80s we get it even at your cheesiest and campyiest, you still make original badass movies with kickass soundtracks that we cant even come close to in our generation of emulating. You are the Golden age of movies and music we get it, you win, not even a competition.*
I was 12 when it was released and loved it from my first viewing. Yes, it is campy but that is beside the point. The story was fantastic and the special effects were great. And Queen... It was an all around fun movie from beginning to end and I still love it.

@@ldburgie damn, she was one of my earliest movie crushed. I'll have to check out her performance in "So Fine".
Oh well, who wants to live forever? Ha ha ha ha ha! DIVE!!!
Looney old bird!
He was ugly as sin and way too old for me but I had a massive crush on him each time it came to saying that part.
I'll mark it down as weird stages teen girls go through.
And then he ended up digging for the lost treasure of Atlantis, together with his finest student McGyver :D
He was so awesome when he said that :)

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out in 1980. I've loved it for 40 years now!!
In 2019, I still have this movie on VHS. It’s classic.
One of THE best movies ever made. Ornella Muti, soooooo hot your pants explode.
She's still hot today.

Jones was a character in Stargate SG-1. He played a cool bounty hunter.
LOL when they hit him with the Zat and he's like "oooh tickles!"
I think he was also in an action Tv series in the mid 80s called
The Highwayman
In where he drove a futuristic big rig that converted into a helicopter. Aussie actor Jocko( from Energized battery ads during that time, very loud, brash, n bombastic. Yelled "OY" a lot too) The show only lasted 1 season. Wasn t bad.
Least the truck/help didn t talk.
Aris Boch? Never heard of him.
Holy crap. I did not realize that haha
HA! always thought I knew who that was, but never made the connection! It was Flash!
“I love this movie and I don’t care who knows it.” Me too! Saw it in the theater when I was six years old. Loved it ever since.
I remember seeing this during my last year of college. I grew up as a kid watching reruns of the old Flash Gordon serials. I laughed my way through the whole picture but I enjoyed every moment of it! I STILL enjoy every bit of the movie to this day.
Greatest film ever made. And the whole soundtrack is superb.
Compared to movies today especially star wars episode 7-8 this movie rocks so much better than crap today
Jar Jar Abrams could never make a movie this good, ever.
yes you are correct Flash runs better than star wars 7 8 9
That's because 3/4 of movies today are shitty remakes.
Arguably the greatest movie of all time.
"Flash, Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!" --Dale Arden
"Go Flash, go! Go Flash, go!" during the football sequence :)
"All creatures make merry under pain of death."
I remember seeing this on tv as a kid and loving the he'll out of it.its got such a surreal look about it that can't be matched.
I'm sure that this has been answered, Peter Marinker was the voice of Flash
Just looked him up on IMDB- quite an impressive resume! www.imdb.com/name/nm0547603/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
because Sam Jones bailed at Xmas time and never came back!
RIP Max Von Sydow. Thanks for all the vids Minty. Really enjoy the shows!
I remember when this came out on Showtime for the first time. I watched EVERY time I could. LOVED it!
Me too. Had to beg my mom to let me stay up for it more than once.
i like the fact that brian blessed used to play as prince vultan as a kid when him and his freinds playd flash gordon as kids
GORDON'S ALIVE!!??
..Flying blind on a rocket cycle....
@phill mitchell ....What do you mean flash gordon is alive?
@phill mitchell you crazy bird
There’s a street near where I used to live in Liverpool called Gordons Drive and every time I drove past it I’d say “Gordon’s a drive”?

Minty, we are subscribers, but we are also working backwards watching your entire library of videos. Tonight we watched this movie because of your recommendation...and it was AWESOME! Thank you!
Every now and then you need something cheesy and over the top in a flashy way as something different. And all the bizarre cocaine induced art deco uniforms and designs were awesome. I can see why some people don't like it, but man it was fun as hell.
And yeah, Queen outdid themselves with the theme.
I think QUIRKY is a better word to describe THIS movie than "cheesy".
Brilliant soundtrack. Campiest movie ever. Watched it in the cinema when it came out. Entertaining to the max. Tks great video minty.
I think the difference was probably that he'd worked with John Carpenter a lot, and trusted him to do it right...
He got the joke with China... he was the dumb sidekick who thinks he's the hero... in Flash, he'd be the hero who doesn't realise how dumb he actually is... not a fun thing to play.
Snake Pliskin and Ego.
He also passed on "Highlander" to do BTILC (Goldie Hawn advised him not to do Highlander and to stick with the known quantity of John Carpenter).
this too shall pass and you will star in a 2005 cheesy-fun superhero movie called "sky high" ua-cam.com/video/7XK7aYq4r80/v-deo.html

Watched this movie in the theater twice! Loved it since the day it came out! Thanks for posting this video
Anyone who does not like this movie should be liquidated for treachery.

@@bra-balllegend3940 They really just tickle. It would have been a let down.
"...the lines written by Frank Herbert..." ??! Frank Herbert had nothing to do with Flash Gordon, not sure what you're referring to here...
hurdygurdyguy1 uncredited script consultant. I think brian Herbert mentions this in Dreamer of Dune
I beg to differ. Yes, Ming's line is absolutely marvelously written. But for me, the most memorable movie line ever is "According to scientists at NASA, this morning's unprecedented solar eclipse is no cause for alarm". It's from a totally camp 1980 movie called...oh wait.
First film I went to see in the cinema with me late farther very special film for me thumbs up minty
Yours was this? Mine was Ghostbusters (1984). Lucky us for our first movie was classics.
Talia al Ghul your right we got to see classics when they first came out
Mine was an early Indiana Jones film.
Safersephiroth777 cool I had a relative that had a small part in Indiana Jones he was in willow as well the guy with the skull mask
Queen's music + nostalgia=perfection😎👍
Been a Flash Gordon fan since day 1 (1980). Those opening credits were the best I had ever seen.
Minty, love the videos could I suggest you do a top 10 of things you didn’t know on 80s tv classics like Knight Rider, Airwolf and the A Team
"Melody Anderson was painted green from head to toe."
Please tell me there are production stills of this!
Yeah I so want to see those too :p
Mmmmm,...re-imagining this all over again.
You missed a detail:
There's a minor character named Fico. He's a thin, bald man played by none other than Richard O'Brien, the writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show who also plays Riff Raff.
Papillon is pronounced "Pappy-yon"
Oh is that the movie Minty was talking about?

"Klytus, are your men on the right pills?"
"Maybe you should execute their trainer!"
"Long Live Flash! You've saved your Earth!"
"Have a nice day!"

Queen made this movie the same way Williams made Star Wars. A movies soundtrack is so important especially in SciFi.
Queen weren't the only ones responsible for the soundtrack........
You forgot the Rocky Horror connection. Richard O'Brien played Riff Raff in Rocky Horror and FICO in Flash Gordon.
Nice catch.
I still remember going to the theater with my folks to see this movie -- we enjoyed the campiness even back then!
I saw this film at the cinema in 1980 at the age of 10. When my father saw it later on a premium cable channel he remarked, “The music really made that movie!”
FLASH ahhhh Saviour of the Universe i love this film so much another great video Minty👍👍
You should do a 10 things you might not know about terminator or hellboy mabye by the way your my favorite to ten UA-camr I love seeing these videos keep up the good work mate
Thanks for making this video! And RIP Max Von Sydow.
Flash Gordon is such a nostalgic movie I remember I watched it when I was what? 6? And the rewatched it this year
AAAaah
Loved this film. Costume design and set design worked perfectly to bring Mongo to life. Peter Wyngarde was sublime as Klytus. Everything gelled to produce a popcorn martclass. I see that it gets only 6.5 on the IMDB - outrageous.
Gilbert Taylor was the cine master on this show.
Just like he was for STAR WARS........:)
Sam Jones (without the middle J) was in "Jane and the Lost City" in 1987. The movie is a comedy Indiana Jones type adventure based on a British ww2 comic strip. Worth watching if you liked Flash Gordon.
Please Hollywood, never remake this movie! You can't improve on perfection!
THANK YOU!!!
Flash Gordon...classically so cheezy
12:30 Sam J Jones did briefly star in a TV adventure/sci-fi series in the early '80s called "The Highwayman". Something about highway police in the near future, sort of "Mad Max Lite"
He also starred in a show called Code Red about firefighters. That's when I realized his natural hair color was brown.
Hey Minty; Sam Jones actually was in a ton of movies and shows since. He also played flash Gordon in a short lived tv series in 2007. He also played the spirit/Denny Colt in the 1987 tv movie version. He mostly had cameos and currently has two movies in preproduction.
Not only do i still rock this on vhs but my kids grew up watching it and thus my work is done.
According to IMDB, Peter Marinker provided the voice for Mister Jones character.
10:14 I sometimes say, “Flash, (BOOM) ahhh” during thunderstorms.
There's only one thing you need to know about Flash Gordon
"He's the saviour of the Universe"
when I was a kid, I used to go to the library and borrow a comic book adaptation of the movie, well drawn, nice colors :-)
*Okay 80s we get it even at your cheesiest and campyiest, you still make original badass movies with kickass soundtracks that we cant even come close to in our generation of emulating. You are the Golden age of movies and music we get it, you win, not even a competition.*
“Dispatch war rocket Ajax....to bring back his body!”
Personally, I rather prefer "While you await the ceremony, all monitors will display, for your entertainment, the execution of the traitors."
Growing up in the 80s i loved this movie, always scared me the bit when that guy puts his hand in that test hole thing
Send war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!!!! Great stuff, loved it as a kid, that and the Last Starfighter, can you do that movie next :-)
Send Ajax Liquid to clean up his body.
Funny, I heard "Watercon Ajax"......
Sam J was the love interest in a great 80's movie My Chauffeur with Deborah Foreman!
I was 12 when it was released and loved it from my first viewing. Yes, it is campy but that is beside the point. The story was fantastic and the special effects were great. And Queen...
It was an all around fun movie from beginning to end and I still love it.
Actually, being campy *is* the point.
I bought the soundtrack after seeing it way back in 1980 and still have the record, I still love this movie so much!
