Nice to see Scott get some props for his playing, he's a really good drummer and doesn't seem to get a ton of credit for it. And also, Brittney Slayes is both her stage name and a complete sentence when it comes to her singing. Don't feel bad for not knowing Unleash the Archers, they're decently well known in the metal community but definitely not a mainstream band despite how talented they are. As always, enjoyed your reaction and analysis.
Apex and Abyss are probably the two best metal albums since 2010...and it took me forever to give Apex a chance because of how unimpressed I was with their 3 previous albums. I thought Time Stand Still was okay in a concert setting, but damn did they find their groove on Apex and Abyss (I like Abyss even better, but there's a LOT of synthwave vibes on it, and I love synthwave).
@@rtripp25 I think it makes the regular beat transition easier. The part directly after the bass silo kinda shows it. He goes from a "regular" punky 4/4 beat, into that irregular double-double kicking, back to "regular" 4/4.. Then after the fill, it seems like traditional double kicking, although I'm not sure. I haven't drummed for like 15 years, but that double-double kick is something I picked up on in the Awakening video that I hadn't really seen before.

Glad I got to be here for my request as soon as it dropped! And I love that you mention the Terminator vibe at the beginning. Brittney was a guest vocalist recently on Arjen Lucassen's Terminator-themed "Star One" album, singing the song "Fate of Man." I'm not a drummer, but something I noticed that Scott does which I don't think I normally see, is that whenever he plays the double kick parts, he uses double-strokes. I wonder if that's a more efficient way of doing it that alternating single-strokes. Not only has Elizabeth reacted to this, but she (as well as other reactors like Tank The Tech, Mr. Rock N Roll, and Chase Carneson) has since interviewed Brittney, since she likes to watch reactions to their music.
At really high speeds I think the majority of drummers choose double-strokes for double bass runs, but this song isn't that fast, so I would wager it's probably just his personal preference.
@@LordBaktor It's funny, I've listened to this song maybe 50-60 times and always felt the fast gallop rhythm. But after reading this comment I listened to it again and realized it's just the energy that makes it feel fast. Cheers
Minor point, but the Star One album carries a general theme of time travel/time manipulation. Fate of Man is the only song based around The Terminator. It was the first thought I had when he made that comment as well.
That song introduced me to Brittany and, therefore, Unleash The Archers. I've been a huge fan since then. Their last two albums are phenomenal, and I don't usually like female-led metal bands.
double strokes is indeed a techinque to conserve on stamina. there are drummers who use them sometimes, but also single strokes. some use whole leg motions, other just ankles... whatever works for you really. the other commenter is right, this song is not that fast, I mean it is, but the 16th notes on the drums are not, considering there are a lot of tech death songs going well over 200 bpm, according to the net, this one is about 155 bpm, so totally doable with single strokes. but double strokes are cool too. Andrew Baird of Fallujah uses them a lot, John Longstreth of Origin too, Trey Williams from Dying Fetus too. but they are also in higher tempos and if you have to do extended parts with fast tempos, double strokes are just better at conserving energy, which, especially live, is a good thing to do for a drummer.
I'm no drummer but I think a lot of extreme metal drummers tend to lean toward barefoot/drum shoes is because it allows them to feel the pedal better and at those speeds and levels of precision every millisecond of travel makes a huge difference. I'd imagine it also allows more articulation of the foot as well.
I’m no drummer either, but I think it has to do with a couple of things related to the heel-to-toe movement that they need to do to achieve the rapid strokes. One, the stocking feet slide on the pedal better, yielding a smoother stroke. A rubber sole would grip the pedal and hinder the movement of the legs. Second, a sole would flatten the foot, negating the natural fulcrum of the arch, making it harder to get those rapid doubles.
The first time that I heard Unleash the Archers was from Elizabeth's Charismatic Voice channel. I ended up purchasing the whole back catalogue. Brilliant band.
Watching someone listen to this song for the first time never gets old. I've watched dozens of reactions to this by now, and I just love the joy it produces every time.
So glad you got to Unleash the Archers! These guys are top notch musicians and all -around great people. And, as I'm sure you noticed, Brittney is an elite singer.
Apex is recorded in Copenhagen Denmark by producer Jacob Hansen. Jacob is known internationally primarily for his work as a producer within the metal genre.
1st time i saw the band live, they were playing in a teeny tiny bar in Portland OR and scott was playing a small 4 pc kit, and wasnt even using the kit drum was playing a doub;e pedal on a trigger pad, and was amazed how he looked like he could play all the songs in his sleep becuase he played to effortlessly. becuase of the tiny kit and small sixed drums could see he knees and they always seemed to be moving half as fast as what i was hearing. it wasnt till i saw this video that i finaly could see that he never does ultra fast sindle stokes wit his feet he always plays double-strokes which makes it all the more impressive that he makes it look so easy.

Thank you for going through the trouble of giving us the lyrics, I've listened to this song a hundred times without actually knowing the real words, although, somehow I managed to get the gist of the song simply by the way it was presented and the little bit of vocals I could hear. Now that I see the words in their entirety I'm surprised how close I actually was...again, thank you.
Such a fantastic band, I really enjoy seeing them live back in 2019 I think it was. They were the last concert I attended but man it was a good one. I was right against the rail the whole time in the club and they put on a fantastic show. Got to talk with everyone after before going home. Super talented bunch of people!

Anyway, enough rambling, thanks for the video bud!! Had to edit and add that its great to see Unleash the Archers getting some love. Fantastic musicians and personally think this is a mini masterpiece of a song. You was absolutely spot on in calling out the fantastic sound guys/gals that worked on this, they got everything perfect sounding!! Great stuff!
Yeah the kick drum thing really grabbed me, surprised you didn't mention it. Instead of right-left-right-left like other drummers, it's LLRRLLRR. Like double strokes on the bass drum. I've never seen that before. Also that crazy bass guitar picking technique is unlike anything I've seen. It's a bit like banjo claw hammer. It's so smooth it's insane. Steve Harris, hold my beer! He's double-thumbing and using at least two or maybe three fingers as well. Even Victor Wooten might sit up and take notice! There is some scary musicianship in this band!
The two highlights of this one are, obviously, the bass run, and that wonderful grin that Slays throws the camera at the end. She nailed it, and she knew it. I love this track. Great band.
First time I saw this, I couldn't get over Scott doing alternating double strokes with each foot like that. Never seen anyone else do that. I can't think of any benefit other than it looks badass. I haven't drummed in some years now, but I could never play in socks, don't like sliding around on the pedals.
12:54 As I understand it, Andrew Kingsley does a good bit of the initial composing, with additions and changes from the other band members, and as for production that's Jacob Hansen, who's done both their Apex and Abyss albums, and who himself plays in Pyramaze, a symphonic progressive power metal band. He is absolutely A-list for producers.
I'm honest;y surprised that you never heard this band/song before! I won't go as far to say that they're a staple but they're rockin' and you obviously could tell that. :) I've been listening to this band for many, many years now! Big fan of 'em. :) Very happy that you enjoyed your first listen.
Oh man, I love your reaction! More listening, less overacting. And you're one of the few to point out the real quality parts! Thank you for sharing that!
Great reaction, Andrew! I think this is perhaps the perfect metal anthem, with driving drums, intricate guitars, exciting clean and harsh vocals, and insane bass. The production is masterful, as you point out. I'm not really a fan of the band, but I love this song!
Scott’s great! Glad to see him getting some attention as it’s usually the vocals + guitars that get the attention (with good reason!). Always cool to see someone be able to play so much with a relatively minimal kit as far as metal drums go.
There's some very unapologetic Iron Maiden influence being shown. On a subject matter topic, they are also openly giant nerds and love fantasy literature and Dungeons and Dragons.
Just noticed that you have yet to react to another great drummer and great power metal band. The lovebites. Drummer Haruna it's a treat... Pick any live song, you will not be disappointed!
In case no one mentioned it (for shame, I had to check myself), the album Apex, of which this is the first track, was produced, mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen. He's worked with bands like Ad Infinitum and Arch Enemy. Cheers, Andy! 🤘🤘
As far as barefoot - I’ve always played this way. I feel like I have much better feel + control and don’t have to worry about different shoes throwing me off because they’re heavier, slippery, etc.
Also personally love it when you stop and give comments on technique and style. I dont play so a complete novice to any of the information around techniques a drummer would know. Also love the band so would totally watch more reacts to them!
I think that many shoes, with 1+ cm of foam sole gives a slight delay in the feedback with the pedals. Hence the use of socks or dance shoes or barefoot.
I wonder . . . I giggled when you did the Terminator association and wondered if Arjen Lucasson made the same association as he asked Brandy to sing on a Star One song he wrote about The Terminator. The latest Star One is all time travel movie and show based songs. Most of Arjen's drumwork is done by Ed Warby, by the by.
Actually, no -- from what I understand, initially, in the 1980s, he wanted Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden to sing "Fate of Man," but it was somebody associated with the band that said no. Later, Arjen listened to Brittney sing her karaoke cover of "Queen of the Reich" by Queensryche (kick-ass vocal video, by the way), and that's how she got to do guest vocals on Fate of Man for Star-One.
@@isaiahwelch8066 The first Star One album (released in 2002) was supposed to be a collaboration between Arjen and Bruce, but Bruce’s manager called it off after Arjen mentioned it prematurely. Fate of Man is off the latest, third album. But yes, Arjen was introduced to Brittney by that Queen of the Ryche video.
@@Musicvault2k6 : Oh. I thought Star-One was an album that was supposed to be released initially in the 1980s, at least the way Arjen tells it. Basically, Arjen, if I understand correctly, wanted to make the first Star-One album back then, but had to put it on hold because of what happened with Bruce and his manager -- at which point, it became a project relegated to a back burner as other things came and went, until the initial album was released in 2002.
I saw your vid and not even watch I give you sub and 👍 I fall in love to UTA since 2020. Awekaning is sustitut for morning espresso. Next time Test Your Metal, Northweast passage (a special acoustic, a drumer nightmare 🤣), Time stand still, Tonight we ride, greatings from Poland 🤘🔥
If you compare each members show of skill in this video, compared to their full potential, it is actually Brittney who is the least impressive. They are all unbelievable good, but she got so much more power than is shown in this song! Gotta be my favorite band of all times. Not a bad song in their catalogue.
Great reaction! Although I like practically all subgenres of Metal (Heavy, Speed, Power (old, from the 80s, as an example), Thrash, Death, Black, Doom, Djent (primarily Meshuggah), Sludge, Industrial (Godflesh - this band is extremely special -, Ministry), Hard Rock (OK, it's not Metal, but I like a lot of bands like Whitesnake, Van Halen, Motley Crue, UFO), 70s Progressive Rock, etc.), a few like current, modern Power Metal, I don't like. Despite this, I recognize that this modern canadian Power Metal band (UTA) is very good. This song, which opens the LP "Apex" (2017), is very well done, very good arrangement, great musicians and vocalist. Greetings from Brazil!!!
I agree with you about a lot of modern power metal, which is why I quickly get bored listening to bands like Dragonforce, Lovebites, and Gloryhammer, but UTA’s riffs remind me more of classic thrash, and so I don’t have the same problem with them.
Haha a few people have mentioned this before. This is a "playthrough" video which is meant to have close up shots of their playing to highlight their techniques/skills. It would be a nightmare to film and then edit to stabilize the video if they were jamming out hard 🤣
Five really skilled and cohesive musicians just in the groove. Always fascinated by the techniques used, especially the bassists fingering style. Almost like a classical guitarist?
The only thing I know about Unleash the Archers is that they did a power metal cover of Barrett's Privateers, which is the greatest genre mashup since Babymetal
@@natewoods4566I feel ya, though. I love Northwest Passage (I am Canadian, so...), both Stan's original and UtA's amazing cover of it, but I keep hoping for a Barrett's Privateers cover from UtA as well. It'd be so good, I have little doubt!
Hey Andrew. An idea for a discussion. Let's say you're advising a drummer who's just starting out and wants to make themselves available to local pub/club/party bands that do a bit of everything. What 30 songs should that drummer have in their pocket that they can pull out with any group of players? Here's my suggestions, five from each of the last six decades: RESPECT, Hey Jude, Layla, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, I'm A Believer Waterloo, Alright Now, American Pie, Hotel California, Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow) The Power Of Love, (Don't You) Forget About Me, Simply The Best, Billie Jean, Summer of '69 Wonderwall, (Man) I Feel Like A Woman, Teenage Dirtbag, The Heart Goes On, Smooth Crazy In Love, Yellow, Hey ya, A Thousand Miles, Crazy Locked Out Of Heaven, Skyfall, Shut Up And Dance, Shake It Off, Adventure Of A Lifetime Some big omissions there, I know - no U2, no Bon Jovi, no Aerosmith. Your thoughts?
When you start doing a "word association" game with Fill... drum fill.... my brain 100% segued to Phil Collins 😂 and after that every time you said fill.... my brain heard Phil 😅. That was a 1st time hearing that band for me also and it is definitely a band I will look into more
I’m honestly kind of shocked how many drummers in this comments section seem to never have seen the heel-toe bass drum technique in action before. 😅 And I don’t even consider myself a drummer, I’m just a self-taught guy, mainly doing vocals and guitars, who merely uses his electric drumset to capture the MIDI dynamics before ultimately quantising everything anyway (well, except for the fills, because if the toms line up exactly with the bass drum hits, that sounds really unnatural).
Not sure if Scott's footwear are socks, they remind me of cheap wet shoes from Kmart. If they are the ones I am thinking of, they have a soft rubbery sole on the outside, maybe they grip the pedals better and also give him a better feel than shoes? Also, Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Primal Fear, Mercenary, U.D.O., Amaranthe) handled the production. (quoting Maximum Metal article: Brittney Slayes - Unleash the Archers "Reaching for their Apex"). Checkout their music video for "Tonight we Ride" next, more of a highlight of Brittney's vocals for me than anything else though)
One thing I wonder about this song is if drummers can watch it without getting massive 2nd hand cramps. Dude running things looks to have nearly died by the end by normal means.
Hi Andrew, love your video reactions mate. Ne Obliviscaris have released two new music videos recently: Equus and Graal. Any chance you could do reaction videos to those? I saw them recently here in Melbourne Australia and they were awesome to behold. Keep up your great work.
React to the drumming of Morgan Rose(Sevendust) and Abe Cunningham(Deftones) both quite unique drummers, although not as extreme as a lot of the other drummers that you usally react to on this channel.

To know a thousand years or more have passed, and I am the same

My path begins with the new dawn; a voice is calling my name
It always starts as whispering then manifests to a scream
I'm drawn to the creature that wakes me, bound to them by the curse
My soul exists only to serve, a covenant of birth
Fear not the task ahead there's no escaping it, there's no good nor evil here
Stellar constellations rise, lighting my way in the night
Once again revitalized, to roam; to never die
Come to me, awakening
Follow my voice, come to me
Fear not the task ahead there's no escaping it, there's no good nor evil here
Stellar constellations rise, lighting my way in the night

Great reaction, looking forward to seeing more UTA there are so many awesome tunes by them
Scott’s great!
Hell yeah, please do more of this genre. It always brings a smile to my face. Your reaction are EPIC! Thanks for this
Excellent reaction!!! Another great drum performance is Kai Hahto with Nightwish doing Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean- official live.
Gotta check out more! This isn’t even their best music. IMO. Love this band!
they are giving me such a iron maiden vibe:D truly talented
Just noticed that you have yet to react to another great drummer and great power metal band. The lovebites. Drummer Haruna it's a treat... Pick any live song, you will not be disappointed!
It's hard to come away from this one without a smile.
that double bass alternating heel toe technique is amazing, so hard to get right.
It's about time you got to this!
Really dig this!
Great band . This is my first time listening to them.. great song.
In case no one mentioned it (for shame, I had to check myself), the album Apex, of which this is the first track, was produced, mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen. He's worked with bands like Ad Infinitum and Arch Enemy.
Cheers, Andy! 🤘🤘
メタルハートを持った素晴らしいバンドを教えてくれてありがとう!そしていつも楽しいリアクションをありがとう!
This guy's double-bass technique is crazy!
Love this group! Not sure if you have reacted to UTA but their song Tonight We Ride is just killer.
UTA absolutely Slays live as well!
Awesome, thank you!
I'll def do more :)
OMG! Great band! "Cleanse The Bloodlines", "Abyss', heck just pick any song... Oh I think those were swim shoes with that rubber grip on the bottom.
UTA is an awesome band if you're introducing someone to metal, this song specifically is one hell of a gateway to get from normie to metalhead
Andrew, Unleash The Archers will be in Auckland next June in case you want to go bang your head 🤘🤣🤘
REALLY!?
Her name is Brittney though but at least a fair chance I still used the wrong spelling
@@justdave9610 : You spelled her name correctly, so no worries there.
Hey there! Thanks for the sub!
First I've heard from them,I'm impressed
ME TOO
If you compare each members show of skill in this video, compared to their full potential, it is actually Brittney who is the least impressive. They are all unbelievable good, but she got so much more power than is shown in this song!
Gotta be my favorite band of all times. Not a bad song in their catalogue.
In my top 10 heel\toe drummers of all time!
Maybe I'm too old school but watching 2 energetic guitarists and a bassist playing sat down breaks my heart (but surely save their ass) 🖖👽🌸
Haha a few people have mentioned this before. This is a "playthrough" video which is meant to have close up shots of their playing to highlight their techniques/skills. It would be a nightmare to film and then edit to stabilize the video if they were jamming out hard 🤣
A fine Cdn band!
Five really skilled and cohesive musicians just in the groove. Always fascinated by the techniques used, especially the bassists fingering style. Almost like a classical guitarist?
I believe it’s a banjo technique called clawhammer.
Love UtA, imo their best song is Apex.
Scott has some chops for sure, the openning to Legacy and all of Cleanse the bloodlines are drumming highlights
Er'body loves that LLRRLLRR.
Such a great song. Check out the 2020 album… start to finish it’s fantastic.
For real Terminator vibes check here: ua-cam.com/video/Qt9A4g2whCo/v-deo.html 'Fate of Man' with Brittney and other awesome singers and musicians
Insane track 😂🔥
YUP!
Thank you all to make me discover that band!
Is it me or the drummer is playing double bass drum AABB?
The only thing I know about Unleash the Archers is that they did a power metal cover of Barrett's Privateers, which is the greatest genre mashup since Babymetal
👀
@@AndrewRooneyDrums actually Northwest Passage, my bad
@@natewoods4566I feel ya, though. I love Northwest Passage (I am Canadian, so...), both Stan's original and UtA's amazing cover of it, but I keep hoping for a Barrett's Privateers cover from UtA as well. It'd be so good, I have little doubt!
Unleash the Archers are a great band!
Hey Andrew. An idea for a discussion.
Let's say you're advising a drummer who's just starting out and wants to make themselves available to local pub/club/party bands that do a bit of everything.
What 30 songs should that drummer have in their pocket that they can pull out with any group of players?
Here's my suggestions, five from each of the last six decades:
RESPECT, Hey Jude, Layla, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, I'm A Believer
Waterloo, Alright Now, American Pie, Hotel California, Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)
The Power Of Love, (Don't You) Forget About Me, Simply The Best, Billie Jean, Summer of '69
Wonderwall, (Man) I Feel Like A Woman, Teenage Dirtbag, The Heart Goes On, Smooth
Crazy In Love, Yellow, Hey ya, A Thousand Miles, Crazy
Locked Out Of Heaven, Skyfall, Shut Up And Dance, Shake It Off, Adventure Of A Lifetime
Some big omissions there, I know - no U2, no Bon Jovi, no Aerosmith. Your thoughts?
theyre coming to auckland and welly next year andrew
You should check Daniel Erlanderson from the band Arch enemy. His drum play through of their song Deceiver Deceiver is awesome
When you start doing a "word association" game with Fill... drum fill.... my brain 100% segued to Phil Collins 😂 and after that every time you said fill.... my brain heard Phil 😅. That was a 1st time hearing that band for me also and it is definitely a band I will look into more
HAHAHA
I’m honestly kind of shocked how many drummers in this comments section seem to never have seen the heel-toe bass drum technique in action before. 😅 And I don’t even consider myself a drummer, I’m just a self-taught guy, mainly doing vocals and guitars, who merely uses his electric drumset to capture the MIDI dynamics before ultimately quantising everything anyway (well, except for the fills, because if the toms line up exactly with the bass drum hits, that sounds really unnatural).
try Nightwish with ''weak fantasy'' Live ....nice drumming also
Not sure if Scott's footwear are socks, they remind me of cheap wet shoes from Kmart.
Check out studio versions of Welcome Home, and A Mansion in Darkness by King Diamond, eh?
React to the drumming of Morgan Rose(Sevendust) and Abe Cunningham(Deftones)
both quite unique drummers, although not as extreme as a lot of the other drummers that you usally react to on this channel.
GREAT call!
Phil Collins said it also "I can fill it...." 😊
I´m drumming with socks, too, I feel the pedal better.
Nice! Whatever works for you... DO IT I say :)
