John, this was a perfect tag for you, awesome selection. Loved that Cornershop album. Totally agree with Fela, the mid 70s was best, and wow a OG. I have that Duli Povo album, to your point that island put out a lot of music. Altun Gun is a perfect fit, awesome group, a favorite of mine. Incredible collection John, thank you for giving this a shot, I didn’t figure many would but I had to get it out of my system lol
Hey John. You're quite the eclectic in your vinyl habits. I was never a big fan of Serge Gainsbourg but it may amuse (but not surprise) you to learn that 'bite' in French (pronounced 'beat') is another salacious play on words.
Well done. I enjoyed that, especially the Dutch/Turkish record. I kind of get the feeling that Serge Gainsborg made a load of gravely spoken word recordings in the 60s, which years later he just bolted onto backing tracks of whatever the hip music style of the day was.
I like a few Serge albums. Melody Nelson is obviously a classic but I also like the reggae albums he made with Sly & Robbie. More gravely spoken word, but on the off beat.
@@Localbandography Hey Dave. Cool, I’ll check out your response. I’m expecting great things! 😀 I’ve still got Sherv’s to watch too. I know that he will have nailed it 👍
Hi John, brilliant video, loved it! Some great selections, but a couple that stood out for me. Never heard of A Dip in the Pool, but the mere mention of the Cocteau twins had me scurrying to check them out. Absolutely love them! Thank you 🙌 And then the Twins themselves pop up with Sugar Hiccup from Head Over Heels. Superb. I’ve got a reissued vinyl copy of Heaven and Las Vegas, but an original would be nice. Also need an OC of Four Calendar Cafe. Interesting about Jorge Ben influence on Rod the Mods “Sexy”. So it was half-inched from both Jorge & Bobby Womack then?! Bloody cheek 😅. Can I kindly ask what it was you were playing in the background to the vid please fella? Thanks again for another great video. 🎉
P.s. In case you fancy & no worries if you don’t, I produce a monthly radio show for a mate on Dublab, January’s is online and influenced by you! It kicks off with Can’s Future Days, after o watched your post about picking up Krautrock and later features a Winston Edwards tune called No Justice for the poor which was either a direct or indirect influence from something you showed in a vid. Anyway, just thought I’d mention, take care fella. 😉
This was a good tag John , very refreshing to see records from other cultures . You remind me of Benny The Ball from Top Cat when you say hey vc at the beginning, it sounds like hey TC . Benny was played by Maurice Gosfield who played Duane Doberman in the Phil Silvers Show as Top Cat was based on Sgt. Bilko ( father of Steve Bilko the South African activist and friend of Bono )
@@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 I love Top Cat , it only ran for one season which is why it was on repeat perpetually during the 70s. Based on my favourite TV show of all time featuring Master Sergeant Ernest Bilko.
Just searched UA-cam for the original music video to “Love On The Beat”.. not surprised it’s been pulled! The one where he’s sitting down in a nightclub chain smoking Gitanes, waving along his prospective dancing partners!
I would throw in Toots Hibbert as the Otis Redding of Jamaica, one of my top singers especially since I got his autograph and he sang to a girl I brought on a date to Maytals show in Toronto in the 90’s cheeky wee bastard lol

Stealing samples who'd do that? Naughty Rod. Naughty John too showing naked breasts. Altin Gün sounded great even if not Turkish. Incidentally have you seen Turkish star wars? It's a classic. I reckon I could just about have a monks tonsure haircut too.
I love that Cornershop album. I have it on CD from back in the day. It's so long since I've listened to it. Nice mix, John. Cheers

Hi John, enjoyed this one a lot. Plus it encouraged me to have a go so cheers for that!

Great response on this tag John. Sherv twisted my arm so I joined the party. I’ve got to find that Ken Boothe LP. Brilliant one.

Hi KK. How’s it going? The music in the background was a Gilles Peterson compilation called “Worldwide”. Figures it suited the subject. Cheers!
Ah, cool, got to love Gilles Petersen, and yes it worked really well with the vid mate. Thanks fella. 😉

More foreign pronunciation please 😁
No chance 😀

Ha! Yeah, you don’t need Toots serenading a girl that you’re trying to impress. Cheeky wee bastard indeed 😀
I think the hardest name to pronounce is 6 inch pianist. 🤠🤓🤔

Nice stuff. Gal Costa's album India was banned by the Brazilian Military Government for very cheeky front (and back) covers.
I love that Gal Costa album, Mark. 👌
Cool video, first one I've seen, but Iceland isn't in Scandinavia. It's a Nordic country
Ok. Pretty close though… 😉
