The song is a good look at what were considered the big problems in the world in 1971: overpopulation, economic inequality, pollution, war. The writer of the song, Alvin Lee, often said the song remains just as relevant today, despite the passage of time.
A bit like today.
Except today we're facing (and going to face far worse) population collapse
So much worse than 71 😓
@@tayzk5929 you are 100% correct!
I'll bet all we need is a lot more Neo-Marxism and a lot less capitalism. Right?
Pretty sure that the "dykes and fairies" line is the reason that I haven't heard this on the radio in decades. It was a huge hit.
Yes, that hasn’t dated well!
Why?
@@Frankincensedjb123 The word 'queer' seems to have made a comeback anyway.
@@Frankincensedjb123 'Cos opening referring the LGBTQ+IA communities, especially as 'dykes' & 'faries' just wasn't done back then so the song wouldn't get air time over the radios unless that line was edited out. It simply was the times.
@@Motown-1966 Yes it was done back then. The song got a lot of airplay on my stations. Today would be another thing since everyone now worships at the alphabet alter.
if you don't hear what an amazingly beautiful song that is, no classic rock is going to float your boat brad.
They were a British group and actually played Woodstock. The guitarist was Alvin Lee and he was exceptional.
I think you’ll find they were a Dutch group cheers 👍
@@vicstamatiou2894 wrong - British
Well Alvin lee is Dutch buddy you better look it up 😊
Actually your right I’m thinking of focus 👍
@@vicstamatiou2894 Actually you were thinking of Lee Towers
This song was written by Alvin Lee, who was the centerpiece of the group. "I'd love to change the world, but I don’t know what to do and I'll leave it up to you. I'm just saying the world does need changing," he said of the song in Vintage Rock. "I'd love to do it, but I haven't got the talent. I don't think I'm a world changer."
Y'all just stumbled across one of THEE GREATEST guitar players ever.
Alvin Lee's solo is out of this world amazing!!
‘I’m Going Home” from Woodstock is anther great performance.
Truly included in the top 10 guitarist of rock history
Always considered Alvin Lee one of the greatest guitarist. I don't know how he wouldn't make everyone's top 10 list
I agree
Yeah, what a great guitarist.
was he a singer as well? I remember the song "The Bluest of Blues". I thought he was singing that.
7/12/11, 12:01 a.m.
It's an anti-war protest song. At the end it says: *Senators - stop the war.* The lyrics said Us and Them stop the war. Just thought I'd clear up an error.
Great band, filled with talent. Alvin Lee was a beast on guitar. Died way to young! RIP Alvin
I'm amazed that neither of these two people even MENTIONED what a great guitarist the guy is in the record even if they didn't know his name. Also, once again, they MISS the meaning of the chorus. "I'd Love to Change the World, but I don't know what to do, so I'll leave it up to you" MEANS that people complain and want change but they rarely ever DO anything about it so they leave it up to the next person. That's what it means.
Alvin Lee is the most underrated guitarist in RnR history, imo.
Both him and Terry Kath are never mentioned when it comes to great guitarist, absolutely criminal!
A very valid assessment.
My own opinion has long been that the claim to the title of "most underrated rock guitarist" is a tie between Billy Duffy of The Cult and Ian Thornley of Big Wreck. I’ll make *no* claims here that either of them are the _best,_ just the most _underrated._
However, I have to admit that I had never previously considered Alvin Lee as one who would also fit that same bill. Because he’s just *so damned talented and/or skilled,* it never occurred to me that he could be underrated.
I realize now, though, that the very same principle applies to Ian Thornley, so while I still hold on-narrowly-to my Duffy/Thornley claim, I definitely agree that Alvin Lee is a strong contender as well.
@@noneprovided689 Alvin Lee isn't underrated. The word "underrated" is used by mistake all throughout UA-cam comments regarding every singer and every song and every guitar player, etc, when what they actually mean is underappreciated. Underrated is the most overused word on UA-cam, I think! And almost always erroneously!!
While on the subject, Leo Lyons was really up there among the greats as well. Often overlooked but just as awesome John Entwistle etc
Leo is the og head banger. He and Alvin are both my # 1 guitar players.
One of the best guitar solos ever laid down.
And Brad just sits there with a deadpan face LOL!
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION ✌️
Amen
Always loved this tune. His guitar has a very 'RICH" sound to me. Not to mention how talented his playing is.
Great choice, great band. Alvin Lee could shred. Their “I’m Going Home” was the best performance at Woodstock. ✌️❤️🎶
Damn right!
Probably the best live performance ever. I have never seen anything by anyone that matches that.
Agreed. They flat out nailed it at Woodstock. And that was live. No retakes. No mixing. No studio work. Just flat out talent of the highest caliber.
Absolutely stellar performance! Not sure Id say the BEST, but most certainly right up there with the very best performances from that event!
A shredder before the term was known. He kept it tight and had a great band. Glad to see you mentioned 'I'm Going Home'. A real moment in Rock n' Roll history that was caught on film.
This song has one of the greatest guitar sounds of all time. I've always loved this song, it never goes out of style.
This is one of the all-time favorites "Classic Rock" songs of the early 1970s. "I'd love to change the world...but I don't know what to do, so I'll leave it up to you." That pretty much says it all.
Thanks
Alvin Lee is amazing. His guitar takes me on a musical roller coaster in my mind. I get chills. The words? Who cares. I'm in for the musical journey.
Ten Years After is one of my Top 5 bands, and Alvin Lee (R.I.P.) was my favorite guitarist. One of the fastest players of all time, Alvin could play any style with his famous "Big Red" Gibson - rock, blues, jazz, rockabilly, etc., etc., he was a master.
Lex made a brilliant conclusion. Everyone needs to be responsible for themselves and that’s probably the best we can do.
The lyrics of this song is one thing, but you may have missed the greatest guitar solo ever recorded in a studio. Un effin believable.
This album A Space in Time was the best of 1971. If you were at a party and they weren't playing it, you were at the wrong party!
Brad. Be literal....its who you are and its what makes the dynamic of you two work so well. What people like to call a gut feeling is what i call "listenin to my elbow" if my elbow likes it...then i like it. Listen to your elbow brad....trust it and tell us what its sayin....literally. Dont homogenize it for the haters
I saw them in the early 70's at Winterland in S.F. and it was the only concert I'd seen where everyone stood up when the first song started and didn't sit down the whole performance. Totally electrifying band.
Alvin Lee, at Woodstock, literally was shredding on the guitar - in the song 'I'm Going Home', which is really a blues - before shredding was even the word for it.
An iconic song from a time when musical ‘giants’ roamed the earth. As I recall this song was released within a few weeks of LZ IV.
Loved it !!!!
R.A. Williams (below) is right! The video of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After doing "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock is amazing and will make you very very grateful that we have You tube so we can savor moments like that.
SO glad you're checking out Ten Years After. People always forget about them, even though they're one of the key groups of '60s Hard Rock & Blues Rock. Lead singer/guitarist Alvin Lee is way more influential amongst other Rock musicians than his relative lack of mainstream fame would suggest. I usually prefer studio tracks to live ones for reaction purposes, but these guys are an exception. They're absolute monsters on stage.
Ten Years After was a great English Blues Band. Their performance at Woodstock led to the inclusion of "I'm Going Home" in the movie, and one of the most memorable segments of the film. It ends with Alvin Lee hoisting a large watermelon on his shoulder and walking off stage after a rousing gig. True hippie era lyrics, very humanitarian.
Such a timeless, beautiful song with a powerful message ❤️🔥
I was actually standing on the stage where Ten Years After was playing this very song, at my college in New Hampshire, Jan. 1970
it is part of the hippy culture. Stop the War was a reference to the Vietnam war.
Alvin Lee is a very under rated guitarist. Ten Years After Woodstock performance is great also.
Alvin Lee on that trippy guitar wailing... so 70s... the best
One of their biggest recordings they never sold millions of albums like some of the groups from the late 60s and 70s but live they were iconic Alvin Lee their guitarist was considered one of the fastest guitarist of the time and their performance at Woodstock made them superstars overnight
The leed guitarist is incredible! I grew up on this song from childhood, but never get tired of it. 😁
Alvin Lee is a fantastic guitarist and back in the day, was considered to be the "fastest" player out there. Clapton and Townsend were big fans. Please check out one of his solo cuts, "The Bluest Blues" which also features George Harrison on slide guitar. It's a beautiful, gut wrencher.
Hear Hear on that!!!!! Most underrated Guitar Player by far.....should be up there with Clapton, Page and Beck.......
@@joewiley62 he is not underrated in guitar community.
Yes the Bluest blues! He and George Harrison shared guitar duties on that masterpiece
Absolutely love this song
Fastest player? Maybe in the late 60's....but very shortly thereafter fusion players like John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola would redefine what fast guitar playing really was.
Their performance of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock (longer version) clearly demonstrates why Alvin Lee is such a baddass guitar player and why rock 'n' roll is truly transformational music!!! I saw them live in 1973 - it made it hard to see any other group match their intensity. Review this performance - it will take you places!!!!
I can’t help but like Lex . She gives you something back and I appreciate that !
Good pick guys. If you liked that, check out
'The Bluest Blues" by Alvin Lee... same guitarist. best blues song EVER!
LOL Brad: "I'm trying to not be literal."
Some songs are meant to be taken literally. This would be one of them.
I love when Brad gets the "that woman is crazy...I think I'll keep her" look, after Lex goes into her explanations.
These guys really were at the exact right *Place in Time* for the way they sounded....
*Hendrix* even said in an interview that *Alvin Lee* was the one guitarist that he was actually *Frightened of!!*
Beautiful guitar work, but I have a slightly different perspective on the lyrics. Please remember that I grew up during this time and witnessed all of this with my own eyes. This is basically criticizing literally everything, not having the slightest idea of how the world works, therefore also having no idea how to “fix” any of the things they consider wrong and expecting someone else to do it for them. There was a lot of that going around back then. The loudest voices were usually the richest spoiled brats on the planet. One of them changed his name to Bill DeBlasio and eventually became the mayor of NYC. We can see how that worked out with our own eyes today. Not trying to be a drag, but you really gotta think these things through from more than one angle. Much love ❤️
I remember listening to this when I was about 11 or 12 years old, back in the early 1970s on headphones.❤I close my eyes listening to this song like I did when I was a kid. It takes me back to my youth.😢Where has time gone?
For me it's about the power of the collective. It's a call for people to unite and come together.
The individual cannot change the world, they can only change themself. But if enough individuals change themselves, the world MUST change as a result.
I got to see them back in the '70's. Good Times
This has always been my favorite song. The lyrics and music are exceptional.
Ten Years After was my oldest brother, Ronnie's, favorite band. The lead singer was spectacular!
Oh man love this song. It takes me back to the early 70's.
There are so many great tracks that you can discover with this band. Choo Choo Mama, Rock and Roll Music to the World are brilliant.. and they do the BEST cover of Chuck Berry's Sweet Little 16
I`m glad to re hear these songs decades later as it is impossible to hear real "Classic Rock" on the radio.
Alvin Lee on lead guitar and lead vocals, awesome! When they performed at the original Woodstock Alvin blew our minds with "I'm Going Home".
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it all those years ago...and I still love it today. ♥
This is known as TIMELESS! it was relevant then and more relevant today, more than ever.
"10 years After " ? The name says it all.
At the time a lot of people were looking at musicians to "have the answers" to any and all of the world's problems. Alvin Lee puts it perfectly, I'd love to help, but I don't know how, so let this inspire all of you to make a change. Another great example of this type of message is I'M JUST A SINGER IN A ROCK & ROLL BAND by The Moody Blues.
Sweeeet! A great example of radio, cruising, radio blasting, and girls and guys of dealing with growing up and the bewilderment of tomorrow. Lots of comments on "I'm going home" equivalent to Free Bird, and crazy thing it was boogie woogie and the very essence of rock and rollllllll! Good cover of great song Thanks!
Wow. It’s amazing how well classic songs like this stand the test of time.
I love listening to these songs I've heard a thousand times with Brad and Lex for the first time. It is like hearing them in a different way.
Totally agree, they and Nick & Lex and Andy & Alex make all these great, classic songs a new experience even though we have heard them thousands of times. Great reactions to great somgs.
It's such a different take than what I saw all these years. I always viewed it as inaction, from laziness. She sees everyone doing their own thing, not bothering with each other, to solve the problems. It's an altruistic viewpoint, yet I believe that leaves the door open for a wannabe dictator to walk through.
Lex is legendary!
Lex's reaction to these songs makes me so happy. She's a closet hippy and it's adorable.
And her reaction to guitar solos makes my soul satisfied. She gets it.
Brad, you're cool, too.
But Lex listening to someone killing it on guitar is the shit.
I basically come here to listen to Lex's laughter and giggles
simply wonderfull truth
She's special, puts a smile on my face.
Great one guys, I've been digging this song for 51 years now. The guitar work is spectacular on this one. ☮️✌️💕👌
Alvin Lee and Ten Years After was the first concert I ever went to Loved them ever since.....Check out Alvin Lee the Bluest Blues....Guitar God......
Iconic song…one a lot of us can relate to, the feeling of helplessness of witnessing injustices and the mistreatment of others. The superb musicianship and emotive delivery really drives it all home.
Something about Ten Years After was a question in the music version of Trivial Pursuit. I had never heard of the band name, and kept calling them Ten Years Later. The thing about Trivial Pursuit though, is that if you play it enough, you can memorize the answers, and get it right the next time the question comes up.
You need to do one of their total bangers. One of the great British Blues guitarists of any era.. This song was also an anthem to stop the war but Alvin Lee was not called the fastest fingers for nothing. Do Woodstock Lee next but the stuff before and after is just as good . Super reaction..
One of my favorite songs from the 60s...both musically and message-wise.
Damn...Alvin Lee, nuff said...you guys should do a G.O.A.T. lead guitarist livestream, much love Brad and Lex! ✌️ ☮️ 🎸🎼🎶🎵
Things now are the same as they were then, just no smartphones. 1971.
As the Beatles sang, "All you need is love." And faith.
Alvin Lee from my home city Nottingham UK.... Deserved more recognition from the people than he got... So many great at this time.... Woodstock performance is a blast ! ✌️
I saw Alvin Lee -Ten Years After do this song at the 30th anniversary of Woodstock from 15 feet away....AWESOME.... Then they did..... "I'm Going Home"..... TOO COOL
I was probably 5 or 6 years old the first time I heard this on the car radio and remember being completely mesmorized by the sound of the lead guitar. I would never be the same! This is an epic song in such a troubled time. The song itself is timeless!
I love TEN YEARS AFTER , I'm sure a lot of people will request I'm Going Home , from WOODSTOCK , there is a 6 minute version , and there is a 10 minute version , check out the longer version so you don't miss some , or , HELP ME from the album RECORDED LIVE , fantastic album !!!!
Alright Brad and Lex, you got experience Alvin Lee's guitar. Now, how about 50,000 miles beneath my brain, another of my Ten Years After favorites.
One of the greatest rock songs of all time. And the lyrics are a bit of a mystery. People hear things that make them uncomfortable, but it seems like he's not supporting anything suggested. For example, was he advocating taxing the rich to feed the poor until there are no rich left? Some people will find that line threatening. Yet, he doesn't actually seem to be supporting that idea. After all, when he said that, he had just questioned the sanity of the ideas/world. And, later, he proposes one solution as ending the war between different groups, including the war between the rich and the poor. So, to me, I hear him throwing out a lot of ideas that people propose, calling them crazy, and suggesting instead something like love, peace, cooperation, etc., while remaining humble about the best concrete approach to implementing that. But what do I know? haha Regardless, the 'sound of the song', like you said, is incredible.
Ten Years After was the first rock concert I attended. Chicago - 1971. To say that Alvin Lee rocks is is an understatement. Btw, this is their tongue-in-cheek poke at all of the we can save the world songs. 🙂❤️🎶
that guitar tho.... crazy effin good.. just carries you away. one of my favorites over 50 yrs walking this terraforma....
Ten Years After was a legendary British Blues band fronted by the late , great guitarist, Alvin Lee...If it weren't for Jimi Hendrix, they would have stolen the show when they played Woodstock. Check out their live version of, I'm Going Home, from their performance at Woodstock..
You should definitely do Alvin Lee doing I'm Going Home live at Woodstock. He was called the fastest fingers in rock/blues.
A wonderful show you have here - thank you both !
One of the great songs of our generation by one of the OG Shredders on guitar - Alivn Lee. RIP gone much too soon.
Alvin Lee was incredible. The man could freaking play!!!
Lee is a great guitar player as good as any.
I saw TYA at the Bath Blues Festival late June in 69. The bill included Zepellin but I thought TYA after blew them out the water. About 6 weeks later they played Woodstock and from what I can gather, were one of the best acts. 5 years later, I saw them at our local guildhalll, playing in fron of less than 1000, I guess. Their star was waning.
Thanks for bringing this Timeless Song to the forefront again.
As relevant a Song today as it was in 1972 when it was Released
Lex was spot on with her interpretation of the point Alvin Lee was trying to make. Beware when you are chasing after monsters, least you may become one yourself.
One of the greatest under appreciated song????
Extremely powerful....🤔✌️♥️
When that song was put out the world was changing drastically. Youth finally stated their feelings publicly. Some of them shot down or hosed being attacked by dogs and Billy clubs..... I still hear that song everyday in my life. I would love to change the world. And I don't know what to do.......
Best album of theirs in my opinion, Rock and Roll Music to the World ! Good song too !
Always thought they were ahead of their time. Huge talent…crushed Woodstock
Alvin Lee was one of the greatest ever. He could make that thing cry!
I was in high school when this song came out ,still turbulent times , Vietnam War was still raging and I was about to be drafted Ten Years After put this out as protest song , grooved to it alot. Thanks y'all . Ron.
I think about the lines from the last verse and think just how relevant it is in 2022. "Black or White, Rich or Poor, Us or Them, Stop the War. It makes me sad that we have learned nothing and even made things worse in this century. Racism, greed and division on every subject is all we seem to know and nobody is stopping the war amongst ourselves.
And imo, Alvin Lee was a virtuoso on guitar. Every bit as good as Clapton without nearly the notoriety.
She's so right!!
I have heard this 100 times, a fav . I always thought it was saying I'd love to change the world, but i don't know what to do, so I leave it up to you...but we don't know either , so we leave it up to someone else, that's why nothing ever changes....
growing into a young man in the 'late 60, this song meant a lot to bunch of us...
You guys should react to more Ten Years After…
"Love Like a Man", "I’m Going Home", "Hear Me Calling", "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Let the Sky Fall"
🎸🤘
"Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" LOL Don't know how they got that one past the censors back in the day, and maybe would have even more trouble doing so today.
@@matthewpaul1111 Problem is that things cannot be placed in perspective anymore these days. The song is like 90 years old, from an era where a young adult woman would still be called a child or girl. If one would go that route and censor this song for it, then one has to be equally strict to the words "Babe" and "Baby". It could also be the song was written from of the mind of a young boy, which is quite realistic. As it seems to be about a young uneducated lower class boy who is after a higher class educated girl. Hence the line "I can be a schoolboy too". All about interpretation.
@@mor4725 But its a grown man singing to a schoolgirl, I wanna ball you all night long repeatedly. And after singing that line the song then goes. "Yes I do child" That can be taken the wrong way and I'm no prude but to me those lyrics are inappropriate and I wouldn't allow someone who sang those lyrics be alone with my 11 year old daughter.
Standing at the Station, criminally underrated.
For another chilled song , from a great album, Cricklewood Green, hope they eventually get to "Circles".. .. maybe with deep cuts..
Next is their live at Woodstock performance of I'm Going Home.
It is a wise song! I was 18 when this came out, different times! Glad you two enjoy!
Ten Years After was my first concert. They played with Humble Pie featuring Peter Frampton.
Looked like Brad was going to fall asleep.
Wonderful insightful lyrics.
You two are the sweetest couple Ever!! I love you both! Your reactions! Be safe out there! Let's make change one by one! ❤️
I was lucky enough to see Alvin Lee live, front row center. He was playing rhythm guitar for Eric Clapton, but they'd switch around so they both could show their awesome talent. OBTW, Muddy Waters was the Opening Act. It was a really good night to be me😎.
