Very true. It's fundamentally because people don't know how to think. If average people understood the formal logical fallacies, then they would never take authority as truth in the absence of substantive evidence.
I've heard so many times "and who said that?" or "who are you to say that?" when expressing some things as true. As if truth depends on someone saying it. It's like they want validation of an authority determining it. If someone is to say something first for it to be true, then everything is subjective, which of course, i reject.

On Reddit, if you go against what is popular, your comment gets buried or removed. In real life, you can't afford to take such gambles, so people either say what is popular or if they are feeling rebellious then nothing. Even if someone makes a stand, they will be "cancelled" fast, or at the very least will make enemies and keep in mind the basis for this divide is not having the same opinion.
It's hard to believe Reddit used to be one of the most pro-free speech platforms back in its early days.

These videos have taught me a lot about totalitarianism and the importance of being aware of our boundaries as civilians. And reminding us and each other to think about those boundaries and uphold them. Though it has been sad to see how far fear will control the people, and how people will even turn against anyone who doesn't comply. The scared people in a society become even scarier than the so called threat they're afraid of.
Imagine if the government had the right to force Fredrick Douglas to be silent because it was offensive at the time????? As long as some words can be used then all words must be legal!!

It literally has people killing each other, eventually touching on sewing mistrust where the main group knows what's going on but can't speak out without being tortured or killed. To censor misinformation, the State must hold the monopoly of truth. If the State has the monopoly of truth, than it may lie and claim its lies as truth. Therefore, free speech is ultimately destroyed by default, regardless of whether the State uses its power appropriately or not. Without free speech, there is no democracy. Democracy depends upon the ability of the people to criticize and dissent, in order to promote and elect their new leaders. Free speech cannot be a threat to democracy because it is its primary requirement. Free speech is only a threat to unpopular leaders in a healthy democracy.
