Thank you Kenyan Historian for answering a question that has been ringering my mind for a long time.
The Kenyan legislators needs to be more concerned about the Kenyans. BRT is a brilliant project, and were it not for lack of proper framework, the project could be complete. Even though the incoming government will consider completing the BRT project, the Kenyans will have to dig back to their pockets because of inflation.

Thank you historian Alot of vested interest in the transport sector in kenya....big matatu investors are fighting this project through parliament ,there were no laws to gorvern BRT ,NO POLICIES , there was a lot of talk ,lots of lies but very little on the ground, the same on is on CBD decongestion ,nrb is just a disorganised concrete zone a whole packing lot with vehicles

  • @GONG2MEDIA

This project stalled mostly because of 1) lack of political will and vested interests since this thing needed a a serious commitment and especially discipline through the public and even the operator of the said busses 2) the Matatu operators were going to lose investment and jobs for the touts and so forth , so with the fight that UDA was bringing to the government it was literally impossible to go on with this kind of project even if money is there 3) probably corruption too played it’s part as well

All of those observations are true I think. I was on the inside of this project from 2014-16, working on the EU funded project to set up NaMata and the BRT lines. Actually I left the NaMata establishment team of consultants.

My humble opinion is that when the highway was built, there was no plans to accommodate the rapid transit bus system and the idea was an after thought but without financial plans for it. This happens in a lot of our countries in Africa. Tanzania planned and designed of the expansion of the BRT in tandem with road major construction and that is why phase one and now phase two are successful. Yes, one may say that the Dar BRT it has its problems as well but at least it is currently working and soon phase two will be completed.

Having the keep left traffic rule and prohibition of importing left hand drive vehicles in Kenya, I wonder how this project will go about; Will the government change the traffic rules to accommodate BRTs or will the investors have customized busses with doors on the right hand side???

In Tz second phase of BRT is on the verge of completion 1st phase has been operational for almost 6 years now..i think the Tz BRT projects was smooth because they demolish the existing infrastructure and start from scratch..in kenya demolishing of thika road not easy so they are trying to push to accomodate BRT within the existing infrastructure .

But it wasn't really a 'mega project'...just an afterthought that was being forced onto a space where it cannot wok. The best idea that can be implemented along Thika Superhighway is an elevated mono or light rail.
This was a terrible idea that was never gona function as a proper BRT.
A redesigned Jogoo road can have a more effective BRT.

They should stop “construction” and stop wasting tax payers money on a project that wasn’t designed with BRT in mind, it’ll continue to be a massive failure and wastage of taxpayers money.

Very bad design of transport system.
It would disrupt the high speed lane.
Secondly we drive on the left..how did they expect us to exit.
Why not fix a tram rail transport on top that detours to several stations.
Same problem with expressway ..it would have been better to do a rail to machakos with a linkage to the airport...going upto dagoreti corner etc..
In my view very bad though process...and the collaborators of this economic crime, should be judged.
