    Anytime it's a young stud of a guy being the main character of the story, and the story goes "And the hero grew restless so off he went.", I take that to mean "And our hero slept with someone's wife and was run out of town." Great story as always, Dael. So happy you're going back and doing these stories again.

      Mold Earth can excavate a 5^3 cube in 6 seconds. That means it would take 48 seconds to make a 10^3 ft cube, or 6.4 minutes to make a 20^3.
      22^3 would take about 8.5 minutes meaning a level 1 Druid could make 3 of those holes in the time it takes to watch this video, and still have time to Druidcraft a Flower Crown.

      @@BlueSparrow23 Mold Earth moves the 5' cube, a whole 5 feet from the hole you just excavated. Even it the DM allows that "excavate". means that the earth lifts it out of a 20' hole, you still have a huge mound of earth sitting around. Yeah, you can mold earth that away by shifting a 5' cove a whole 5 feet.
      Gonna take a tad more than 8 minutes.
      It's a handy cantrip, but still just a cantrip.

    the one about Mr Giant sounds very similar to a norwegian folk tale about Askeladden, where he challenges a troll to a eating contest and drops food in his bag and slices it and convinces the troll it is his trick for eating more, the troll then commits sepukku

      Folktales get mixed and iterated upon all the time. It's no surprise that by the time the writer of Dael's book put the story of Jack the Giant Killer down in print, it had absorbed basically every notable story of a human killing a giant. See also the bit with the "fee, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman".

    That's one hell of a DnD campaign. Jack bests gryphons, an evil wizard, several giants (and ettins), and even _the fucking Devil himself._
    The difficulty falls off a bit when the DM gives Jack several OP magic items midway through, though. Those could have done with spreading them out over multiple quests, to keep things _slightly_ challenging.

  • @LongRest
    @LongRest 5 років тому +4

    One of the favorite tales of my childhood. I really liked how most of his ways of defeating giants were pretty logical (you can imagine such traps in DnD, for example). Many other tales have this faerie logic, were everyone except hero is unbelievably dumb, so "cunning" hero just says complete nonsense and everyone believes him. Most of the Jack plans had sense.

    That one plank reminds me very much of the story "Molly Whuppie and the Giant" where she runs across a bridge that's made of a single golden hair after having enraged the giant so much that he chases her without thinking--
