I won't fault the list for not including Sweeney Todd; but I do find it a bit odd that it's not in the honorable mentions. Depp did receive a golden globe award for that performance after all. An award 3 of the performances on this list got him only a nomination for. Of course, that's not a universal qualifier, but it's food for thought I guess.
It might be because I watched the shit out of the 1982 recording of the stage show, but I HATED Depp in Sweeney Todd. Sweeney had this passion in the stage show that Depp lacked. When Todd gets his razor back in the show, he's enthusiastic, his razor is the only thing that didn't change after 15 years! But when Depp gets it, he's like an emo teenager. Sorry for ranting, if you liked his performance, good on you for finding something to enjoy. But for me, I'm sticking with George Hearn.
S.R. Hunt I actually agree with you; George Hearn has a much more captivating portrayal of the character, and I tend to listen to his performance when I do work from time to time. Depp's performance is more of a different interpretation, in my eyes. I can't flat out say it's "worse", just different. Depp plays up the more introverted side of Todd, while Hearn's is a lot more theatrical and present. You could feasibly point to the change in medium for the differences in performance. A stage musical can't really have quietly sung moments without alienating part of the audience that can't hear, they have to project. They example you bring up, for example, Hearn has to project the line loud enough for people to hear; so the stage director probably thought that the best way to handle this was to make the reaction one of overwhelming excitement. While Burton thought that the moment was better as a personal one, not something that should be projected, so thought a softer delivery lended itself to the character better; without the restriction of having to project the line from a stage to an audience. TL;DR I personally like the stage musical more; but the movie is also good for different reasons. They're different mediums, so it's hard to compare them objectively.
+Michael Riley the thing about Walter's videos is that he puts what HE personally feels is Johnny's best performance, even if Sweeny Todd got a nomination, if he felt it didn't work, he wouldn't put it, now if this was a watchmojo video, i assure you they would've had sweeny todd in it, because it mostly appeals to the mass opinion. Having said that i was pleasantly surprised to see Ed wood in number one as it is Johnny's most underrated performance
aisha L Before he got to number 1 and he went through the honorable mentions; I was sure it was going to be either Ed Wood or Sweeney Todd; they're both worthy of that position, imo.
I don't know about BEST performances, but these would be my top 5 FAVORITE performances: 1. Pirates Of The Caribbean 2. Secret Window 3. Sleepy Hollow 4. Sweeny Todd 5. Edward Scissorhands
Kevin King I thought should have been nominated for Best Picture. If Forest Gump can beat Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption, why can't Ed Wood, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get some.
He is my favourite actor so choosing only five of his many great performances is tough... 1) Sweeney Todd 2) Black Mass 3) Pirates of the Caribbean 4)Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 5) What's Eating Gilbert Grape
I'm surprised Sleepy Hollow didn't make an honorable mention at least. I know they changed this story a lot, but in thought Johnny Depp was really good as Icabod Crane.
Surprised Sweeney Todd wasn't seen or mentioned at all in the list, unless I blacked out. Would like to see Clint Eastwood or Will Smith next, both have done good and bad movies.
1. Ed Wood 2. Edward Scissorhands 3. Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas(not a fan of the movie though) 5. What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Supreme Wolf It's sort of plotless and insane. I don't think there is a moment in it where Johnny Depp is not on drugs and it shows that. Some individual scenes becomes entertaining but as a 2 hour movie, it was a hard watch for me. I know it has a fanbase, it's just not for me.
Johnny Depp is almost always fun to watch. His career has shown us we really don't know what to expect from him, due to his wide range of abilities. I remember about 12 years ago a lot of my high school friends hated him, probably because all of the girls were creaming over him, and so I watched a couple of his movies and was blown away. There's no doubt he is one of the greatest actors ever. Although, there are the times where he was less than extraordinary, as we'll see with your next video. Also, I like your videos, I see a lot of hate on here (as we usually do anyway) seeming as if people don't like you or appreciate you, but I do. You clearly have a deep understanding for film and performers and even if I don't agree with a couple of the spots you choose for these videos you still give a great explanation as to why. I've been watching Nostalgia Critic for awhile, but I think you're a great addition to that group. Keep up the good work.
There's a hole in this listing like a great black pit, and it's filled with a movie that you missed, and the peppy musical inhabits it.... but not for loooong....
The Todd, deserves, to rise! Tell you why, movie critic, tell you why! Because in all of the whole movie industry, movie critic there are two kinds of movies only two! There's the one staying put and that plays it safe, and the one with it's foot in the other one's face, who missed a great movie? That was you!Now the Todd, deserves, to rise! And we'll neeever see it ooon here! No we'll neeeever, have that satisfaction. But word must! Spread! Sweeney Todd was great. And deserved a plaaaaace! *dramatic music ending* ^_^
This wasn't an epiphany, though, was it? You thought that before you watched this video, right? LOL But seriously, Depp pulled me into that movie. I wasn't sure if he could really do it, but he made me feel sorry for him and yet still fear him. Now that's exactly the mix of feelings that you should get for the character.
I like that you included What's Eating Gilbert Grape in honorable mentions, I feel it's a very underrated film that really has Johnny Depp at centre of it all, plus Leonardo DiCaprio's role is incredible too.
Ed Wood is one of my favorite films of all time, every time I feel a slump in my creation process as a film maker I just throw that baby on. Extremely Underrated along with Once upon a time in Mexico.
Askmolnet nah, you're fine. After i publicly reviewed the recent season of Steven universe, (I know it was stupid but I needed to say my two cents) I have a slight paranoia about those type of comments being targeted at me
My favourite Depp performance... well it's probably Jack Sparrow yeah but I have such a soft spot on his character in Sleepy Hollow. I love how he's awkward and ridiculous and terrified, and in any other movie he'd be the comic relief, but at the same time he's smart and brave and the hero of the story. And he's SO self-confident despite being a neurotic mess, I love it.
I think Secret Window is his best performance personally very good and underrated performance and movie. He deserves more recognition for that movie his performance was amazing in that movie.
I think this movie (ironically) messed up with the ending, because you could figure it out too soon and there was not enough tension in the fight scenes, but that wasn't Johnny's fault. He created a great character, which is saying something considering that he spends most of the movie napping, for crying out loud.
He can do the top five best and worst of everybody's favorite oss secret agent my picks are... worst 1) burger beard the spongebob squarepants movie 2 a sponge out of water and best 4) zorro the mask of zorro.
Your number 5 pick is an under-rated movie and what you said about Depp's performance was spot-on. Also, Robert Rodriguez has a gruesome fetish about people losing eyeballs. However, I am bewildered at why people love Edward Scissorhands. I just don't get it. Under rated Depp performances for me include Sleepy Hollow and From Hell.
I agree wholeheartedly with #1. I also think his low-key role as Glen Lantz in A Nightmare on Elm Street is truly one of his best. Apart from John Saxon and Robert Englund, he's the only other best actor in that film that pulls off the character he's supposed to play: a teenager from the 80s.
I know I'm very much in the minority on this one, but I think his best performance is in Finding Neverland. It's one of the most restrained performances he's done, and definitely his most subtle (even more subtle than Scizzorhands.) He is utterly convincing as a childlike man, and blends an emotional maturity with wit and warmth. It's a staggering accomplishment, and is one of the most touching and moving performances I've ever seen in American film.
I really liked his performance in Benny And Joon. He plays this weird, but extremely likable guy named Sam who's basically a living Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin caricature. Sam befriends and later falls in love with this girl who has a mental illness. They're this pair of really odd people who are extremely interesting to watch. The movie is really sweet and pretty underrated in my opinion. Depp performs all the Keaton and Chaplin gags really well too.
Love the film Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Carribean are my top in that list. I agree fully Geoffrey Rush doesn't get enough credit he's my next favorite to Jack Sparrow. Also the sequels to me are not as memorable as original, but they are as enjoyable in my opinion. I don't care what anyone else thinks unless they agree with me 😍😍Im a huge Johnny Depp,Tim Burton, and Disney Fan😍😍
i would've added Swinney Todd (probably messed up the spelling of the name) its a really good movie and he performs quite well, also, you get to hear him Sing, wich is awesome, hehe.
John Dillinger in Public Enemies was a pretty good performance. He got the calm coolness of Dillinger down so naturally. Maybe Bale as Melvin Purvis wasn't the best casting, but Depp as John Dillinger was great.
Haha I love how Jim is a recurring actor in Walter's Top 5. They're both hilarious and I'm glad they both have their own series here at Channel Awesome. I hope we see them more frequently in the Nostalgia Critic Reviews too :D
I gotta say Captain Jack is my fave Depp performance. I love coming back to Black Pearl and watching his drunken antics while still being an intelligent character.
I know that this is my opinion, but I LOVED Sweeney Todd. It was one of my first ever horror movies, it blended a dark atmosphere with a demon barber. This was one of my favorite movies, and still is today. Hopefully this isn't on the "Top 5 Worst Johnny Depp Performances".
I agree with what you said about his make-up in Black Mass. When I first saw the advertising for it; I thought it was Ray Liotta playing Whitey Bulger.
You're totally right about Geoffrey Rush being overlooked in the POTC movies. Him and Depp playing off each other in World's End is easily one of the best things about the whole series. "What are YOU doing?" "Nah, what ARRE ye doin'?" "No, what are YOOUU doing?" "Nah, what AARRRRREEEEEEE *ye* doin'?" Cracks me up every time.
I missed Sweeney Todd, In my opinion Fear&Loathing is his best Performance but he anoyed mee as Mordecai, Willi Wonka, The Mad Hatter, and in Transcendence
YES! ED WOOD! SO HAPPY! I was sad when I didn't see him in the honorable mentions, it's my favorite Tim Burton film and my favorite Johnny Depp movie, but then he was number one! Damn good pick, sir
Interesting list. Here's my top 5 (10): 1. Dead Man 2. The Brave 3. Ed Wood 4. Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Finding Neverland 6. What's Eating Gilbert Grape 7. Donnie Brasco 8. The Libertine 9. Blow 10.Cry Baby
My favorite Johnny Depp performance is of course... Edward Scissorhands in Edward Scissorhands. I feel for this character every second he is introduced and on screen from then on!!
I just wanna say that I find it awesome that not only was Ed Wood number 1 for Johnny Depp, but Man on the Moon was number 1 for Jim Carrey. I think as awesome as these films are and how awesome it is that they're number 1 for both of these spectacular actors, I think the real MVP's go to the talent behind the scenes. I'm not talking about Tim Burton and Milos Forman (respectively), even though they are major talents and among my favorite directors, I'm talking about the writers Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski. These two have been -- in my humble opinion -- THE GUYS to go to when making biopics (if for nothing else, a close second to Aaron Sorkin), and they've written not only Ed Wood and Man on the Moon, but also The People Vs. Larry Flynt (which won them the Golden Globe for screenwriting), Big Eyes (which is one of Tim Burton's best in recent years), and recently created and showran the first season of American Crime Story which covered the OJ Simpson Trial (writing a majority of the episodes in the season). Like I said, as much as I love the films and the actors/directors, the writers need an honorable mention, and I highly recommend that you check out any of the other films that they've written... unless you've seen Problem Child (which for the record, they disowned).
I think you forgot some of Depp's musical roles like Sweeney Todd and Crybaby. dude has quite the decent voice and in Sweeney Todd he has a duet with the actor of Snape, tragically taken from this world now. On the flip-side you have Crybaby which is a hilarious spoof on Grease (and possibly Dirty Dancing) just as the trend was dying down.
I'd add Mortdecai, too. Yes, I like that role as a guilty pleasure. He can be unlikeable but is such an airheaded ditz that you can't stop watching him causing so much trouble.
Johnny is the greatest actor I've ever seen I am surprised that he didn't include Blow I thought it was excellent everything Johnny does is special he puts more into his roles than anyone in history
good list. I called number one. how can you argue with that? definitely the right pick. I also liked him in Sweeney Todd, but I can see why it didn't make the cut. too many great roles from Johnny to choose from.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas should be 1A to Ed Wood's 1B. He captures Duke/Thompson so perfectly, in a way I can't imagine anyone else coming close.
0:48 Johnny Depp shot all of his scenes in 8 days, but after his filming was done he didn't want to leave. So he suggested to Robert Rodriguez that he play a small part, the priest that Antonio Banderas talks to in the church, and use his Marlon Brando impression.
Solid selections, but an honorable mention should have been his role in Blow as George Jung. Such a great film that doesn't get enough love, and Depp does a fantastic job in one of his most grounded roles.
I loved him in that. I think it at least deserved an mention iif not a placing
It might be because I watched the shit out of the 1982 recording of the stage show, but I HATED Depp in Sweeney Todd. Sweeney had this passion in the stage show that Depp lacked. BENNY AND JOON should've gotten honorable mention.
OldeSkool1 I would've thought it had gotten that at least
yeah I was waiting for it...a buster keaton-esqu depp? and you just skip it? the fuck>?
Definitely, his character in that movie is ridiculously likable
No question.
I came down to this comment section just to say that, but you already did.
I really liked his voice acting in Corpse Bride, actually.
I don't know about BEST performances, but these would be my top 5 FAVORITE performances:
1. Pirates Of The Caribbean
2. Secret Window
3. Sleepy Hollow
4. Sweeny Todd
5. Edward Scissorhands
Why isn't *Sweeney Todd* on the list?!
He wasn't that good in Sweeney Todd, he didn't show much emotion in that role.
Then you must be blind to true acting. His eyes were filled with emotions and sympathy.
Because he can't sing, he got Sweeney's character all sorts of wrong, and the movie itself was utter garbage.
Johnny Rambo yeah, he’s an introverted serial killer who hates people. You shouldn’t exactly expect him to be full of emotions
@@johnnyrambo5083 He got a Golden Globe award for his role as Sweeney.
I agree. Ed Wood is both Johnny Depp's best performance and Tim Burton's best movie, in my opinion.
I think the same!
Kevin King I thought should have been nominated for Best Picture. If Forest Gump can beat Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption, why can't Ed Wood, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get some.
I completely agree.
Jack Sparrow will always be my favorite Johnny Depp character
No sweeny Todd? He got an Oscar nomination for that!
He is my favourite actor so choosing only five of his many great performances is tough...
1) Sweeney Todd
2) Black Mass
3) Pirates of the Caribbean
4)Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
5) What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Appreciate the Barbosa shout out. He was always my favorite character next to Jack.
Benny and Joon? Secret Window? Sweeney Todd? Ninth Gate?
I'm surprised Sleepy Hollow didn't make an honorable mention at least. I know they changed this story a lot, but in thought Johnny Depp was really good as Icabod Crane.
Surprised Sweeney Todd wasn't seen or mentioned at all in the list, unless I blacked out.

What about Denzel Washington?
yeah me too
1. Ed Wood
2. Edward Scissorhands
3. Pirates of the Caribbean
4. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas(not a fan of the movie though)
5. What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Skibi why don't you like fear and loathing in Las Vegas?
Supreme Wolf
It's sort of plotless and insane. I don't think there is a moment in it where Johnny Depp is not on drugs and it shows that. Some individual scenes becomes entertaining but as a 2 hour movie, it was a hard watch for me. I know it has a fanbase, it's just not for me.
Skibi I mean the whole point is for him to be on drugs
Supreme Wolf
Yes. I know.
Johnny Depp is almost always fun to watch. His career has shown us we really don't know what to expect from him, due to his wide range of abilities. This is the best fucking comment on this video XD
Thank you, I try ^_^
This wasn't an epiphany, though, was it? You thought that before you watched this video, right? LOL

Thank you for honerable mention, love. Fantastic performance.
I like that you included What's Eating Gilbert Grape in honorable mentions, I feel it's a very underrated film that really has Johnny Depp at centre of it all, plus Leonardo DiCaprio's role is incredible too.
I know it's not a popular movie, but one of my favorite performances of Depp comes from Chocolat. Such a good movie and character :)
Ed Wood is one of my favorite films of all time, every time I feel a slump in my creation process as a film maker I just throw that baby on. Extremely Underrated along with Once upon a time in Mexico.
Sweeney Todd should have gotten an honourable mention :(
I'm super sad to not have Blow here.
Ikr?! That was frigging amazing!
I forgot about that one. There are so many it's easy to forget at least one.
He did a damn good performance in blow.
That movie was Depps last great performance before his career turned to shit.
Until he became Disney's bitch.
do Top 5 Best/Worst Robert Downey Jr. performances. :)
Good idea. Might I suggest "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"?
Well, we all know that Iron Man's gonna be on there. That's a given
Charlot, tropic Thunder, iron man in the MCU, Sherlock Holmes, us Marshall, air america, kiss kiss bang bang, ally mcbeal
loved him in 'once upon a time in mexico'. he was hilarious. my favorite though is his performance in 'fear and loathing'
1)Ed Wood
2)Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Lost Pearl
3)Donnie Brasko
4)Black Mass
5)Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
No mention of Sweeney Todd? Because depp has a great role there
This guy clearly doesn't know true character portrayal when he sees one. -_-
Askmolnet are you talking about me or this reviewer? Because I have my reasons for making that comment
*****
The reviewer, not you. Sorry for the confusion.
Askmolnet nah, you're fine. After i publicly reviewed the recent season of Steven universe, (I know it was stupid but I needed to say my two cents) I have a slight paranoia about those type of comments being targeted at me
Finally, some love for Black Mass
My favourite Depp performance... well it's probably Jack Sparrow yeah but I have such a soft spot on his character in Sleepy Hollow. there was a mistake in ur video, u put jack sparrow in 2nd place instead of 1st
I think Secret Window is his best performance personally very good and underrated performance and movie. He deserves more recognition for that movie his performance was amazing in that movie.

Speaking of Antonio Banderas... him next?
Best or wrost? because he has plently of both XD
whynotboth.jpg
There is a lot between Desperado and the 13th Warrior.
ZORRO!

Misread it as "Top 10 Deep Johnny Test Performances"
That's some serious dyslexia you got there
I'd like to see that.
Not even an honorable mention for Sweeny Todd?
Johnny Depp is the best at what he's at.
Even in his crappy movies, there's still a certain charm to it.
The Best/Worst lists are one of my favorite series on this channel. Keep it up!
Sweeney Todd didn't even merit a mention?
No :(
one that I love and no one seems to know is "The man who cried", where he playes a gipsy during war world II and it's amazing.
Not even an honorable mention for him as John Dillinger?
i am loving the top best and worst lists so far keep it up
Love the film Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Carribean are my top in that list.
Every sequel is not as memorable as the original
Wahoo thanks for using my suggestion. Awesome video!
Christopher Lee performances please.
Can't wait to see Dark Shadows, Willy Wonka, Mortdicai, and Rango in the "Top Worst List"
Dirvinator Rango was fun
Likely #1 will be Tonto.
maybe that shit movie with Angelina Jolie
Andre Guilherme the one on a train?
Andre Guilherme That I can agree with.
I'll try to watch at least one of these sometime next month. Thanks, Walter!
5. Willy Wonka
4. Ichabod
3. Sweeny Todd
2. Edward Scissor Hands
1. Captain Jack Sparrow
i would've added Swinney Todd (probably messed up the spelling of the name) its a really good movie and he performs quite well, also, you get to hear him Sing, wich is awesome, hehe.
ForemostCrab7 yea it's Sweeney I believe
I'm not talking about the name either, I'm talking about the Which at the bottom
Benny and Joon and Edward Scissor hands are the movies i fell in love with Johnny Depp as an actor.
Once upon a time in Mexico! LOVED it, thanks for the reminder...😎watches😎
I agree with all these performances and honorable mentions. Solid Depp Movies.
John Dillinger in Public Enemies was a pretty good performance. He got the calm coolness of Dillinger down so naturally. Maybe Bale as Melvin Purvis wasn't the best casting, but Depp as John Dillinger was great.
Thank you for the Geoffrey Rush shout-out, much respect!😎
Haha I love how Jim is a recurring actor in Walter's Top 5. They're both hilarious and I'm glad they both have their own series here at Channel Awesome. I hope we see them more frequently in the Nostalgia Critic Reviews too :D
I loved him in Finding Neverland. Great movie. :)
Hopefully this isn't on the "Top 5 Worst Johnny Depp Performances".
do a top five best and worst of Robin Williams
I agree with what you said about his make-up in Black Mass. When I first saw the advertising for it; I thought it was Ray Liotta playing Whitey Bulger.
You're totally right about Geoffrey Rush being overlooked in the POTC movies. Him and Depp playing off each other in World's End is easily one of the best things about the whole series. "What are YOU doing?" "Nah, what ARRE ye doin'?" "No, what are YOOUU doing?" "Nah, what AARRRRREEEEEEE *ye* doin'?" Cracks me up every time.
I didn't expect to see his latest film on this list, but I will not argue that it was pretty damn amazing.
But... but... but...where is Sweeney Todd? That one was great too!
I missed Sweeney Todd, In my opinion Fear&Loathing is his best Performance
but he anoyed mee as Mordecai, Willi Wonka, The Mad Hatter, and in Transcendence
LOVED Ed Wood, but best acting performance? For me - Donnie Brasco.
I love your steelbook collection in the background
glad that once a time made it! love his character in the movie!!!
One of my favorites is Chocolat, it's just very earthy and sweet
Love that goatee, Walter.
Every time I see Walter now I just see Zack Snyder on screen lmao.
I really like this list, 👍
YES! ED WOOD! SO HAPPY! I was sad when I didn't see him in the honorable mentions, it's my favorite Tim Burton film and my favorite Johnny Depp movie, but then he was number one! Damn good pick, sir
yay, you did my suggestion!
One of my favourite Depp roles come from one of his most overlooked films; Paul Kemp in The Rum Diary.
Johnny Depp's one of my favorite actors. He also shares a birthday with me. :D
Holy crap they took my suggestion! Sweet!
Left out "From Hell". I loved him in that flick. Great list :D
Johnny Depp is a legend 💜
Walter, can you do Mel Gibson after Johnny Depp?
I can't believe you didn't mention blow, even in the honorable mentions, cause In that movie he even made me cry at the end. Amazing performance there
Interesting list. Here's my top 5 (10):
1. Dead Man
2. The Brave
3. Ed Wood
4. Pirates of the Caribbean
5. Finding Neverland
6. What's Eating Gilbert Grape
7. Donnie Brasco
8. The Libertine
9. Blow
10.Cry Baby
*is pissed that sweeney todd didnt make the list*
Well, he was not the one singing in cry baby, it was James intvelt or something like that.
well then
we do know it is depp in Sweeney Todd though
Yeah, even in the nightmare before Christmas if I recall correctly
I've learned about a lot movies I didn't even know existed on these lists :0
Love these videos :D
I'd add Mortdecai, too. Yes, I like that role as a guilty pleasure. He can be unlikeable but is such an airheaded ditz that you can't stop watching him causing so much trouble.
I'm surprised his performance in Secret Window isn't as known as it is... although this top 5 is quite on spot with my preferences.
Johnny is the greatest actor I've ever seen I am surprised that he didn't include Blow I thought it was excellent everything Johnny does is special he puts more into his roles than anyone in history
PLEASE make a director version of this!
I like his performance in "Blow" the best.
I wouldn't say its my favourite but i liked Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane
great list I agree with all of em, but I'd change the order of them. Keep up the great vids
Solid selections, but an honorable mention should have been his role in Blow as George Jung. Such a great film that doesn't get enough love, and Depp does a fantastic job in one of his most grounded roles.
I would also put in the honorable mentions depp's voice performance in Corpse Bride.
Just a little gem, the whole movie is.
