Beat Shift for the Baofeng 888s using Chirp Click a memory line to Highlight it. Right click on the highlighted line. In the box that opens, Click 'Properties'. Click the 'Other' tab. Tick ~ 'Beat Shift (scramble)' Click OK That Memory(channel) now has 'Beat Shift' activated Program at least two radios for 'Beat Shift' to work between them ~ enjoy :) I was using Chirp in WIndows 7
f4bscale maybe you can help? I bought 4 bf888s and turned beat shift on in 2 radios and left the other 2 with beat shift off, so I could make sure beat shift was working. Well beat shift was not working, even double checked that the radios were on the same frequency. Tried turning on beat shift with with chirp and the baufeng software but still didn't work. It allows me to toggle from off to on but doesn't transmit scrambled.
@@buckched62 mine either .8 different radios. Gt1 and 888s .none have beat shift. Must be a myth or they have disabled it either with a diode or a line in software. We need a copy of the radios firmware or a chirp copy to find the difference and fix it. I bought them specifically for that feature so they are useless to me.
@J G a coworker works on radios at a county and state level, so I gave them to him to program. He says there different models of the same radio. If I remember correctly he said something like the models with the green stamp on the info tag on the back of the radio are the beat shift capable models. I gabe them to the kids to play with.
In CHIRP you can enable or disable the beatshift by setting the "Beatshift"-bit under Browser->Root->Memory[16]->Memory[16][X] where [X] is the channel number (from 0 to 15). The Beatshift-bit set (0x1) means it is off, reset (0x0) means it's on.
please tell me how to find this item? Beatshift"-bit under Browser->Root->Memory[16]->Memory[16][X] where [X] is the channel number (from 0 to 15). The Beatshift-bit set (0x1) means it is off, reset (0x0)
Thanks for this, my daughter must have managed somehow to switch on beat shift by pressing a combination of buttons on one of her brothers 888s. I downloaded this and managed to switch it back off .
That is the classic “balanced modulator” audio effect. Analog technique that’s been around for 40 years. Often marketed as a phone scrambler device for analog wireless home phones.
hi mate, just sent off for one of these and didn't realise they had the beat shift on em as well as the SOS light and FM radio function, not bad for £13!! I already have 2 777s and if it works half as well as those do I'll be impressed. Thanks for posting this video, its always good to watch before purchasing, especially el-cheapo bargain stuff ;-) 73
A vendor I service has his field radios with Beat Shift Enabled. I want to hear the field guys with my GT3, should I enable Beat Shift so can understand the other field guys ? I know the specific freq the guys are using but my personal GT3 hears them as scrambled !
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was looking at the manual that came with my UV-5R, and it mentioned "scrambling". Would that be referring to the beat-shift meaning that the UV-5R has that feature too? Also, if you have beat-shift turned on for both radios, will the receiving one "decrypt" the signal from the transmitting unit?
Is it possible to add 'beat shift' scramble on the Baofeng UV-5R? Works on BF-888S but I see no option for the UV-5R, is it called something else in the software?
No not possible unless you buy one of those toys called electronic spy gear scrambler rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F223188550112.. saw them the other day on Ebay. They are cheap toy beat shift scrambles for like 10 dollars or less I could hook the audio out of those things into the mic and speaker in and out and make that work .
@SilverStone XAdvanced the 888s radios dont have FM however the gt-1 which is the newest pofeng clone of the 16channel 888s does have FM. All my gt-1 and 888s dont have beat shift either
@SilverStone XAdvanced right .none of my 888s have FM. But the gt1 which is sold as the 888s newest by pofeng baofeng does have same buttons and FM radio works when you hold the monitor key that opens the squelch when powering on .then that monitor key selects FM channels
In Chirp SW you just have to right click channel row, then click on second tab, and there is tick box for beatshift. Anyway, when I program 777s and GT-1 for beatshift, there is no "scrambling", just plain voice from GT-1. Do not know why...
greetings I have an 888s and a uv82 active scramble or change of rhythm in the 888s but in my uv82 is heard the same as the voice cm I must do to distort a bit the voice in the 888s you have to press some buttons...
sorry, i'm just a novice with walkie talkies. i have the baofeng bf 888s and would like to know if the term 'beat shift' is the same as 'scramble'? secondly, if my son was at the nearby park and he had his walkie talkie close to him and i wanted his attention, does the walkie talkie have an alarm, ring or something that will alert him to my call or would he be listening out for his name e.g. "base (or home) to M.J" (which is the code i have assigned him)?? cheers
Can you please share a copy of the downloaded ram in chirp. I bought 8 radios .two gt1 and 6 888s and none of them have the beat shift in them . Its enabled in the software programmer and shows it enables but it dont work.
+Gaming Guroo Well if you bought a pair they'd work back to back, but they would be on illegal frequencies. You can programme to your needs with a cheap $3 cable and free Chirp software.
I couldn't get it to work on some new BF-888s radios I got off eBay. I used the same software and it says beat shift is turned on but it didn't change the audio. I have a old bf-888 that does work I guess the new ones shipped in to the US must be disabled.
Cool video, but the audio was very low aside from the testing parts. Had to turn my volume all the way up and still put my ears next to my laptop speakers. An audio editor can fix this in the future.
+Johnny Rigler Yes if you have 2 with beat shift on, the audio sounds normal when talking to eachother. Its an outsider without beat shift on that hears the garbled audio
Isnt this the same as setting the offset on a uv-5r? Could u set the offset on a uv-5r or uv-82 to recieve like a beatset enabled 888s? Im getting my gmrs license, and buying a few 888s walkies for the kids to use in the woods nearby, and wanted to be able to talk to them on my uv-5rtp with their beatset enabled 888s if possible
Beatshift text is wrong, should be scram on\off-think software text is wrong. Beat shift ie real beat shift causes the radios internal ref oscillator to shift slightly ,if you hear a permanent carrier or beating on radio it will remove or attempt to remove this RF carrier internally generated from the radio. As for scramblers some sets have internally fitted in hardware some dont or firmware different.
Thanks for the video. Do you have any ideas why I can enable scramble (beat shift) and it works, but I cannot get the receiver to descramble? I have tried with and without CTC/DCS encoding and decoding, various frequencies, various channels, toggling different options (scan wide/narrow, power, busy lock). I have tried using the 888S PC Software and the software you mention in this video. Is it possible that some radios can scramble but not descramble? I heard there were radios that couldn't scramble but mine definitely do that. Thanks for your input.
Renae MacLeod I'm not sure what you mean. 2 radios will sound clear to eachother with beatshift enabled. Just anyone listening without it enabled will hear scrambled voice. Does that answer your question?
I have it enabled on both. I have the exact same settings uploaded to both radios. If I make a change, I immediately upload to each radio and test but it's unsuccessful.
Ringway Manchester I mean that I only ever hear beat shift from the transmitting radio when it is enabled, whether the receiving radio has it enabled (shouldn't hear it) or not (should hear it). My initial points about the settings was just to indicate that I am sure that both radios are using the same channel and encryption (or not) because I am writing the exact same profile to each of them, one after the other, even using different programs. Everything is working as expected, except the descrambling. BTW, thank you very much for taking the time to respond. It's much appreciated. If there is another forum you would rather use, please feel free to suggest it. I don't mind taking the time to post screenshots and videos.
By private I mean communicating on a channel, frequency, etc.. that is not going to be interfered by other people with two way radios. Does this sound clear?
It is not the same case but let me give you an analogy to explain myself. When you call someone on your cellphone, cellphone to cellphone, no one can interfere on that call. You can make a 3-way call and still no one else can interfere the call between you 3. So, I want something like that on the baofeng 888s if it is possible to do it.
Ah I see. Yes and no. The yes bit, you can use a CTCSS tone, which means nobody can interfere with you unless they're using the same code, but they can hear you. They'd need to figure our your CTCSS code to be able to get in on the conversation. The no bit, once they figure it out they can interfere. Hope that makes sense.
Yes that totally makes sense! Thank you so much. Now, besides the CTCSS tone, what about frequency? Would it be a good idea (does it help somehow) to change the frequency to a less common, or used, frequency to achieve some effect of privacy? If so, based on your experience which might be this frequency? The radios range is 400-470Mhz.
Ringway Manchester they where provided by my employer however they wanted to add more due to staff safety. they have a 400-470mhz ariel.. cant say anymore really
Ok, they will be compatible if programmed correctly. The only issue is, the power could be too high and violate the terms of use of the radios. Unlikely to be detected but could carry penalties if you were. Hope that helps.
Late to the party but mine don't work. I turn on the shift in s/w but it still doesn't work. I know radio....so I know how to test it, etc. I guess you buy this stuff cheap and subject to stuff that really isn't there. I consider these throw away radios.
If you could share a email address and what frequencies your trying to program into it maybe me or someone else can generate a code plug for you and email it back to you and you could just download & save it to your computer and then open it with the appropriate software & upload it to your radio. :-)

tried this but the radio still transmits without beat shift

I'll check that out tomorrow, thanks for the info :)

You must be in Chirp developer mode.
If you right click on the channel in Chirp and click edit the Beat Shift setting is there.
Cheers for that Jon
Jon Byrne do you know how to switch it off as chirp wont allow me
(using the bf888s)
Does that work with uv5r as well?
Thanks for this, my daughter must have managed somehow to switch on beat shift by pressing a combination of buttons on one of her brothers 888s.
I downloaded this and managed to switch it back off .
+Stephen McMullen Great stuff :)
Love to know the combination 😂

You can use chirp .
right Click on a channel then properties > other then tick beat shift

It does but there's no scramble/beat shift on the UV-5R. Yes if both radios have it turned on, both will decipher the scrambling.
It's now got me wondering about the BF-480.
a lot of old cordless phones in the usa used to use beat shift for privacy...
Enabling the Beatshift option Chirp or BF480 software does nothing. I tested it and the transmission is clear. No change at all.
Is it possible to add 'beat shift' scramble on the Baofeng UV-5R? Works on BF-888S but I see no option for the UV-5R, is it called something else in the software?
+Keith Hood Hi keith I dont think so

.
To listen to FM, press the squelch, turn on the radio, and wait a few seconds.
To tune is in squelch.
Thanks for the info :)
No press the monitor key on the side while turning on the power. FM radio mode .then press monitor button to change stations.
Some have FM some dont . Same with beat shift .they crippled a lot of radios and left these cool features out that's why the are 6 dollars a radio now
@SilverStone XAdvanced the 888s radios dont have FM however the gt-1 which is the newest pofeng clone of the 16channel 888s does have FM. All my gt-1 and 888s dont have beat shift either

No Brian they're fixed output

Hi, it's not scrambled its just a voice effect in simple terms. There's no call feature on these radios
I have a question... Say I buy 2 of these for hunting purposes... Do I need to program them? Or is it a turn on and use?
xXIndianPlaysGamingxX Yes they should work back to back :) Mine did
The vertex AC084N102-VX does analog inversion. Would I be able to communicate with the vertex and a vhf baofeng using beat shift inversion?
Sounds just like the old Scrambler option they don't have anymore. Just voice inversion. 73
Today I received 888s with RED sticker and it have scrambler! but only with Miklor program for 888s
73
I've tried it in bf480 and in CHIRP but it does not work
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video
Outstanding !

Sounds fine this side, cheers for the feedback though :)
I want to upgrade my antenna. What is the model # that you have on your GT-1 ? Thanks

When you have 2 888s and both have beat shift on, and you transmit to the other unit, will it decode the scramble and have regular audio?

Single sideband suppressed carrier.?
For GT-1 is it possible to store all PMR frequencies? Etc.446.00625?
Absolutely
Ringway Manchester Great..Thank you.
Cool video!
Does this beat shift work with the UV-82 and the UV-5R?
Fast Eddy no
How do you activate scrambler on Bf888s doesn’t work for me
I think you have the baofeng bf 888s without a beat shift
How does one set the squelch on these radios .....is there another software program to download to accomplish this
There's a menu in the software mike
which software program and under what heading.....thanks
In chirp, and it's on the left hand side on one of the tabs
Thanks will give it a second look,,,,,,,,,,,cheers
ok Mike shout back if you can't find it

Is there a way to program a PRIVATE channel on these radios? If so, please let me know how to do it please. Thank you!

Neat! Thanks for sharing!!
that maybe what they call analog voice inversion
Not all baofeng bf 888s have scramblers tho
hello we already use business radios from vitai are these compatible?
I have no idea, tell me more about your radios, frequency, band, power, encryption? Analogue? Digital?
Ringway Manchester vitai 8800 standard channels no encryption, they are work you see
Are you in the uk, do you use a license at all? Or license free?
Ringway Manchester they where provided by my employer however they wanted to add more due to staff safety. they have a 400-470mhz ariel.. cant say anymore really

why is it actvating on my bf88s

soo quee soo quee soo quee :-)
i program my bf888s and from channel 1-15 all beeeeeeeep sound. can anyone help/
They're not programmed properly if it beeps.
how to have it programmed properly do you know how to?
If you could share a email address and what frequencies your trying to program into it maybe me or someone else can generate a code plug for you and email it back to you and you could just download & save it to your computer and then open it with the appropriate software & upload it to your radio. :-)

The 888 frequency mod lets you enter frequencies that are not valid.
It's plain jane voice inversion probably at 3.3KHz.
Useless for any privacy.
Depends
could not understand the purpose of BEAT SHIFT FUNCTION, it's unclear, inaudible.
well the other radio has to have it on. it's not clear and inaudible then
unfortunately there are fakes without scramblers
unfortunately there are fakes without scramblers...
my fake without scrambler and without roger beep!
Scrambler is a waste of time.. it can easily decoded same goes for "privacy tones"
cyberjack that's true, but if you're just using the radios for a road trip or something chances are no one is going to take the time to record the transmissions and then "decrypt" them
good point well made. :-) TacRac

Is there anyway you can attach a headset and/or external speaker to this?
Yes you can there's a speaker mic socket on the side
