Is the Compass really an Off Road vehicle? Have to ask when it disables itself when driven in Off Road situations. All the Compass and Patriots I've driven over the years since they were introduced were basically a Dodge Caliber with a Jeep Styled Body on them and more a foul weather road vehicle and not something for Trail Riding. Best!
My car detects if hands are on the steering wheel. It has lane correction and collision avoidance. If you take hands of the wheel it steers itself to stay between the lines. It bleeps and flashes "keep hands on steering wheel" on dash. I decided to see if it applied the brakes like it does for collision avoidance if I didn't grab the wheel. Bleeping got louder then self steering stopped and It headed towards a tree. Seems silly to switch the safety stuff off when you need it most.

I'm wondering if the Jeep transmission was low on fluid. That would explain why it wouldn't go while on a slope, but did work on level ground. Or, it could be that it's a Jeep and it just broke the trans. At least you got it out without too much drama.

If it goes in gear when level, but slips out when its at an extreme angle, is it possible that enough trans fluid leaked out while tilted that the pick up in the transmission pan can't get any fluid when its at an angle?
I forgotto tellyou about the tow truck, if that thing is using bunch of fuel and running like crap, you might try a new map sensor, just make sure you get a Ford one and not aftermarket cause they’re junk, the ford ones are bad enough lol. Taking the burrs and some paint exposing bare metal off one side of that pulley may have thrown that pulley out of balance. It's appears it may be just a matter of time before that out of balance issue on the pulley takes out the pump bearings again just like the out of balance issue on the spacer did.
I think something more serious has happened to that Compass'es transmission since it keeps popping out of gears: the Compass like the Renegade have a more mechanical gear lever that makes possible to shift into gears.
