I definitely bought Fender locking tuners when I built my Fender Strat. Can never go back to regular tuners 🙂
Agreed!
x oh wow!
Are they staggered?
@@bluwng yes. 3 long, 3 shorter
Dude the beauty of the locking tuner is speed and length . It’s quick not to wrap it 3-5 times around the tuner . Also the wraps around the tuner stretch move and slip that causes tuning issues you just eliminate 1-3” of string so less to stretch . Cool to see a father son working together good job Mate ! Thanks for the video. I like your style great vibrato that’s how I like to play as well . Speed is fun and needed but it’s worthless with out the feel ! Great playing buy your dad that beer !
I bought these locking tuners ages ago, finally put them in a few days ago and I couldn't believe the difference. As soon as the new strings were stretched it was holding better than before.
I thought you weren't supposed to wind it around the peg? Just pull the string taut, tighten and cut!
Yeah that’s correct! I learnt that this morning! 😂😂🙈
@@Karlgolden Not necessarily. To avoid string breakage it’s best to have at least a half turn of string around the post, otherwise all of that string tension sits on that 90 degree angle on the post hole and makes it much more likely to snap. Half winding takes off a lot of that tension and doesn’t affect your tuning stability.
That color of the strat is sooooooo good, love that !
Thanks Harold! A birthday present from my in-laws :-)
Great video, you can shred bro and fyi, you dont need all that slack on the strings. Just pull them all the way through , lock, and tune. The strings shouldn’t rap around the peg. It will actually help the tuning stability even more so.
Hey man, we all have our gripes! Cheers for the quality and detail man!
No worries!
Great video Karl👍
Thank you Luka
I love my strat too (60th anniversary) but faced the same problem. Will check out the locking tuners.
Thanks for making amazing videos as always.
Trust me do it!!! But don't wrap the strings like I did! haha Just lock them into place. With the official fender ones it take only 5-10 mins to change over! So easy
You dad looks like invented the first strat😎🎸🤘🏻
haha
I love the hss strat they are tge best especially I love the dave murray strat
The best locking tuners ever are just the vintage style tuners. They never slip.
I replaced most of the electronics and pots on my squier standard stratocaster, I replaced the pickups with the yosemite set by fender they sound killer, replaced the neck with a genuine fender roasted maple neck I did have to mod a little for the tuning machines to fit but all is good now, it's a parts caster now, love it, the tuners are definitely worth replacing.
That’s awesome
I'm doing this exact mod what problems did you have mounting the tuner's?
7:24 I noticed you wound your strings a little too much on the tuning machine, like as in you should have less tuning retention issue if you only leave about an inch of slack before winding the tuners when you change strings. Try that next time, even with your locking tuners, it should help even further.
OH shit he was vibing the shit out of that track bro.
My tele came with locking tuners. I love them. I'm going to put some on my Les Paul at some point.
Yes worth it for sure
Did this upgrade to my new to me 2011 Fender Blacktop Jaguar 90 the other day .Was the easiest drop in ever .Fitted a Graph Tech Tusq nut and a roller string tree while I was at it .Also sanded the neck from a sticky gloss to a silky smooth satin and darkened the fret board with Momty's Montypresso relic wax .Like a new guitar now ,can't beat locking tuners I've thought about Graph Tech ratio tunrts too but the price is ridiculous so Fender will do fine.
RIP Eddie....KEEP ROCKIN' IN HEAVEN
Next upgrade, wudtone bridge. I really want to know what you think about that.
Well done demonstration of how a small investment can change any guitar for the better... most of my guitars have locking tuners, except the acoustics... hmmm... nah... but should I? 🎸😎🤘
Hahaha do it!
That’s awesome! Funny I really modded my strat (I know that’s not your thing) but when I did the tuners I went to my dad’s for help!
Dads rule! Tbh I want to get into more modding and will probably experiment more in the future! Hope you're well Adam \m/
My knaggs Severn sounds more straty than
A strat x
Nice jam bro
Could you please make a Van Halen medley like you did for guns n roses and AC/DC a while back of essential riffs?
Great video. Do you have locking tuners on your Gibson?
No but now really thinking of doing it!
Karl Golden love to see a video of that and your thoughts of doing it on a Les Paul too. Good to see your famous Dad too 😀👍🏻
Aarion 😂😂 thanks man
I bought my first strat with locking tuners start of this year. My Gibson Classic also has them . I don't think I'd go back to normal pegs.
I need to put them on my Gibson! Soooo good 👌👌
You're a great player
Thank you Marco
I don't think the guitar stays in tune because the tuners are locking. It stays in tune because these are just better tuning machines and also staggered. I have locking tuners on cheap guitar which are worse than anything. Be advised that 1 turn is more than enough with good locking tuners
The tension springs need to be checked in such cases. If adjustment doesn't help you can always add one or replace them. :)
Thanks for the 10mm info.
What colour/model is that pickguard? looks amazing with the sunburst.
Gold pick guard from fender
Will D'addarios also drop-in t like those do?
Gosh I hate whammy bars. Got a Strat Mod shop on the way with hardtail bridge..
Me to
Vids always start with jams
The more times you wrap it around the more it'll get out of tune. With locking tuners you don't need to wrap them around the tuner so many times. I do it for half of a turn only.
I never knew this! But makes perfect sense
You should create a luthier's knot, and only wind enough to keep the pressure on the overwind.
It's the volume control for me. I keep catching it and changing the volume.
Oh ok interesting! On my Tele I always catch the toggle switch and it drives me nuts
I bought an American Ultra and have the same issue!
Please tell me Mr Golden, that you slackened those strings of first before cutting them!!!... If not, they will explain why you have tuning problems haha. Love You!
🙋♂️ I did sir...I won’t do it again pinky promise! 🤙
Karl Golden Good boy!!
One thing I love about this video.... your dad
Aw he'll love that thank you!
Lástima para estos anglosajones que no tienen a Ariel Pozzo Seredics 🙃
So how did the tuning hold up?
was ok still not right annoyingly
But did you just butch it? I thought the idea of a locking tuner is to use the locking grip to tighten to the string so that you don't need to coil he string? And that is the great idea of locking tuners that prevent string slippage, or so I've been told. I saw a luthier swap strings on a guitar with locking tuners and I think he pre stretched the string pretty tight just by hand, clamped down the string by the string lock and when he tuned the guitar I would say a bout a 90 degrees angle on the string. No need to coil the string around the peg. The locking tuners clamping forces are keeping the strings in place. Are you sure you are using them locking tuners correct?
Yeah I did it wrong
@@Karlgolden maybe post another video to correct that? Or just do a quick shoot of the string tightening and how to avoid coiling, and do an edit of the initial one? A new video will help your view count
Ok i tended to ignore your spam emails but I decided to click for once , pretty good .
Spam?!? I only email when I have a video out!
Recently I bought set of the tuners and they r made in Korea. Why Korea???
Him: Bending and pulling strings and strumming super hard to take it out of tuning.
Me: You can tell he good by how he fucking up on purpose.
How much did you pay for a 50th anniversery fender that has tuners that dont keep your guitar in tune??
Think I paid £700-800 many years ago. It’s been worth every penny tbf. I think the years of abuse and not getting setup was main culprit not really tuning pegs
I got hipshot nickel ones
locking tuners have nothing too do with tuning and you do not wrap around the post, run through pull tight, tighten nut on tuner and clip strings, use better strings like D' addario strings
Yeah I need to look at the springs at some point
Your Father should be in Hollywood 👍
🤣🤣
The one thing I hate about locking tuners is that the good ones are too expensive 😒
I didn't think they were too bad of a price
I don't wind just lock , guess I should ...
You’re not supposed to wrap them. The wraps move and defeats the purpose of buying locking tuners.
Hey Jim! Yes I just discovered that an hour ago and it makes sense logically which my Dad did say (who is not a guitarist) and I ignored haha Thats awesome news though as it was already 10 times better wrapping it
keep the orignals tuners.
Yeah man 👍
Do NOT wind your locking tuners with extra string length. BAD. Pull string tight, lock and cut. THIS is what makes them work!!
Agreed! You live and learn!
The reason locking tuners seem to improve your tuning is only part of the solution, and most likely the least of your problems. The biggest cause of tuning instability is a poorly setup bridge and nut. Start there. Is the bridge floating or decked? Are you using decent springs? How are your bridge saddles? Are they in good condition and lubed? Is your nut cut correctly to the gauge of your strings and properly lubed to avoid binding? How about string trees? Those who think locking tuners solve all of your tuning problems are usually participating in a fools game. The main benefit of locking tuners isn’t tuning stability. It’s for faster string changes.
Hello
Bonjour!
Great playing,,but don't wrap the strings with lockers.
Putting that many wraps on locking tuners defeats the whole point of locking tuners.
Yes 🙈
Be easy on your guitar
The tuning of a guitar is not depending on the locking tuners, let's cut that taboo fake belief. The proof is when you use your tremolo and it gets worst. The guitar (tremolo here) is simply not set up correctly. Check the videos about it, not hard to do and it will change everything. Cheers.
The tuners are not the reason your guitar is going out of tune, it's most likely the strings binding in the nut. Locking tuners are for faster string changes -- that's it.
You should not wind up the string - this is the sole purpose of locking tuners :/
Yes indeed 👍
Pay all that money for a guitar, and have to pay more to make it stay in tune. Fender should be embarrassed. And they need to add stainless steel frets.
I agree!
No respect for that guitar
