Yep, every Floyd Rose owner knows that tuning issues with floating trems is the bridge not properly returning to position and its very evident on up bends so a down bend after an upend usually helps it get back in position flush with the body. I don't know if Darrell was doing it consciously or not but it definitely makes this particular test a little sketchy.
Hi, If you watch closely you notice that when demonstrating the "bending up" section I never "reset" the trem by bending it downwards - only upwards which does NOT reset the trem - and tuning was solid. Also, most of the "soloing" section I don't reset the trem after bending upwards :)
The bend up tests at 3:25 were where we first saw the unmodified go out of tune. The bar stays back, so there was no downward flutter for the unmodified, but the bar is moved forward and there is some downward flutter for the modified in the test that starts at around 7:30. However, at 7:40 Darrell seems to show that the guitar is in tune before he does the flutter. So we do have scientific proof :)

My favorite Strat trick for floating/tuning is to play it till it's out of tune then bring it back into tune (as best you can) by tightening and loosening the trem springs. Cycle through that about 3 times and they stay pretty good. Hey Darrell, there's a video idea for you :)
My number one is a Charvel strat copy with a JT-490 bridge and roller nut. I thought it had great tuning stability, but I can't dive bomb that thing fifteen times and have it stay in tune. Or maybe I just need to work on it. I didn't know a Fender trem was capable of that, honestly. Impressive. This nutbuster is equally impressive. Pricey, but if you use the trem a lot and are on stage or recording, it would be one hundred percent worth it.
The thing that fixed my tuning was the saddles. I had the ones that are also on your strat. I put on slotted string saving saddles and it kept the strings centered. That solved my tuning issues. I'm actually impressed by how well the guitar stays in tune without the contraption. I have an American Deluxe with a roller nut and locking tuners and light downward use knocks the g string out.
On one hand, this would be good for the notorious tuning issues on a Gibson, from that drastic splay of the strings and the deep tilt-back angle. On the other hand, the added mass at the headstock area would make the neck-dive and fragility problems even worse!
I ordered one of these after a few too many colds ones in early January and after 5 weeks of use I'm still mighty impressed, it totally works! :) Expensive sure, but I don't regret it for a second.
Seems very interesting. Wish I had seen this video before making my DIY attempt to smooth out the nut slots and failing miserably by filing down too much and causing open string fret buzz... Now I have a new nut on order and will keep this one in mind!
When people don't know what to charge for their products, then you see something like this - 178$. Insane! This product is doomed from the start just from the insanely high price. 50$ MAX and it would be seen on every guitar probably....
Darrell, nut setup has a lot to do with staying in tune, meaning, break angle (less is more) polishing the channels and lubrication. Might want to try to setup the nut, and do an A.B.C. comparison ( no nut setup, nut setup and lubricated, floating locking nut )
i see you already have the roller trees, add a roller bridge, make sure the slot in the nut are sized right and relive the backside of the nut so the strings leave the nut headed toward it's tuner. do this and you won't need that paper weight.
That looks really useful! My Les Paul doesn't like to stay in tune, even though it doesn't have a trem. That probably helps eliminate string noise on the head as well. Did you notice that at all? I'm gonna look into one of those!
@@stereolove21 hey! might help but my lp has a titanium nut which is not properly cut so strings probably will get stuck either way. i will take the nut to a luthier but that still doesn't guarantee tuning stability
I rarely have tuning issues with a strat style neck which is the only application for a item like that. With the straight line the strings take and the near absent downward tension on the nut for the problem strings, tuning stability is almost perfect. I even have a home made strat with a 6 hole bridge, plastic nut, kluson non locking tuners, and the bridge is not blocked to the body so it kinda floats and I used that to do old Priest onstage all night and trusted it like it was a Floyd. Now try that with a Jackson headstock and see if you get anywhere.
Wow, that ugly chunk of metal is pretty awesome! I normally avoid guitars with vibrato because of tuning problems (& I HATE Floyd Roses), so this thing may open some doors for me. Killer review, btw. Thanks!
Thanks for the review. Whenever I want to use a trem I typically go for one of my Ibanez guitars with an Edge, ie Ibanez's Floyd Rose, and avoid my Fenders. But with this, I could potentially use one of my Fenders with a vintage six point fulcrum or Dynamic Vibrato and stay much more in tune.
Yeah, true. But then you have a really ugly, nerdy looking guitar, which most people aren't going to want. That being said, the device in the video is pretty damn expensive.
@@JunkfoodZombieGuns Part of me disagree, another one agrees. I think headless guitars _can_ look decent, but most makers somehow don't understand that they have to adjust proportions when they cut off a big chunk of the neck. I never understood why the advantages of headless were never really combined with a headstock that just serves as an anchor point for strings. The Steinbergers sceptre kinda did this, but not quite.
I use a lot of powdered graphite mixed with a bit of Vaseline and run it through the nut with an old string and a drop on top of the strings at the nut and pivot point on block saddles. Using roller string trees is also a must. Back out the middle four screws approximately a 16th of an inch for vintage trems and let it pivot on the outside two screws. It'll perform just as well.

love the riff you made - in your harmonics lesson, watching your videos since then
On one hand, this would be good for the notorious tuning issues on a Gibson, from that drastic splay of the strings and the deep tilt-back angle.
On the other hand, the added mass at the headstock area would make the neck-dive and fragility problems even worse!
Better get out the dumbbells
The science behind this is pretty interesting and also curious as to whether or not the inner channels have any texture to provide more grip
I ordered one of these after a few too many colds ones in early January and after 5 weeks of use I'm still mighty impressed, it totally works! :)
Expensive sure, but I don't regret it for a second.
Absolutely correct bud.
Thanks again Darrell!
Does it work on the 3 + 3 on the side tuners as well
Amazing that's great a little pricey but if you have a vintage that you don't want to F with this is a great solution!
I've got a Sienna with the maple fingerboard, I just may have to try this butnuster thing. LOL
me too and love it!
@@jadonx yeah, when it comes to Fender I prefer the Maple.
Love this channel. Keep posting the good material 👍
$175????!!!!!! Are you kidding??????????? Lock that M-F'in trem down. No way, lol.
That sienna sunburst... ERMAGHERD! 😍
Was this sponsored or did you just decide to buy one and try it out? Just curious.
What do you think?
It’s obvious
Would you do a video if you got one for free? Pretty sure everyone on here would.
Pretty convincing demonstration. Nice camera work too!
What does Jeff Beck use?
That looks really useful! My Les Paul doesn't like to stay in tune, even though it doesn't have a trem. That probably helps eliminate string noise on the head as well. Did you notice that at all? I'm gonna look into one of those!
Jeffrey Eagen try lubing the nut first.
You’ll have to negotiate the angled string pulls. Maybe a String Butler instead?
Great ideas and products....but where do these companies get their names from...
AudiowaveTV Right? Sounds like something from the 90s or early 2000s.
Yesssss I can finally use my Jackson again I’ve been waiting for so long
This would be great for a gibson style headstock, stoping the strings to make a angle at the nut, and locking the G string to not go out off tune 👏👏👏
If you're interested in something like that, check out the String Butler.
They're great for the 3/3 style headstocks that have tuning issues.
@@stereolove21 hey! might help but my lp has a titanium nut which is not properly cut so strings probably will get stuck either way. i will take the nut to a luthier but that still doesn't guarantee tuning stability
My MIJ E model strat came with factory string lock and fine tuners. Nice demo!
WTF??? That is beyond cool but how does affect the sustain of the strings etc...?
Why would it? The sustain is the function of the string between the bridge and nut, not the dead string behind it.
that's your opinion.. let's wait to see what Joe Fender has to say about it :)
Too expensive for me, but very innovative, and it seems to work exactly as intended.
NUTBUSTER!!! I'm only a few seconds in and already rolling on the floor with laughter! :)
just saw the vid went and bought it on a whim since i got my tax return. plan on installing it on my christmas present : Fender Deluxe Roadhouse Strat
Wow it works fantastically
This would solve Les Paul problems.
Darrell, thanks for the hard work 👍
Wow, that ugly chunk of metal is pretty awesome!
How to improve tuning? get rid off the headstock and get a headless.
Yeah, true. But then you have a really ugly, nerdy looking guitar, which most people aren't going to want. That being said, the device in the video is pretty damn expensive.
Forget that, if I want a headless guitar I’ll just get a Gibson.

Part of me disagree, another one agrees.
Wow. Astonishing! Dunno if it would be too useful for an LP but would be nice for anyone that likes doing whole step bends all the time.
“No nuts were busted in the making of this video.” A missed opportunity. lol
