Step Around Johnny on Cigar Box Fiddle

- Newly finished fiddle using a Partagas cigar box for the body. It's a bit smaller than I like which contributes to sort of a nasally tone, but not too bad. At least I didn't need to do cutouts on the sides with this size box. Step Around Johnny is an old time fiddle tune in D.
Fantastic!!!!!!!! Beautiful instrument and music!!!!!
Thank you!

@@morbanjo2503 Thank ya kindly brother!
Woo hoo! I love the menagerie behind you! It's like a fun game of where's Waldo!
Lol, more like, where's my favorite saw that I stuck back there. Shop cleanup soon!
Or an “I Spy” book lol. My shop looks a bit similar. For the most part, I know where everything is at, or where I laid it last. Sometimes it takes me a couple minutes to sift through on the bench to find it, though 😅.
Very nice Fiddle and the sound is amazing.
Thank you 😊
Very cool! I recently met your friend Jon Bolton. He showed me the cigar box guitars he made. I play the violin and he sent me your I’ll Fly Away video on the box fiddle u made. These are really incredible instruments. As someone who has played violin for 40 yrs, and to just today see one literally made out of a box is amazing! It plays so well! Jon showed me the Diddly Bow he made and that thing was awesome! I am going to bring my violin back and am excited to play some bluegrass or old timey music with Jon. I have never gotten to play that stuff before but I like it and think it would be so fun to do. I grew up, listening to my dad play blue grass, & a lot of Johnny Cash, while playing harmonica at the same time. So to meet someone like Jon, and have the opportunity to play some of the styles of music my dad liked is going to be cool. I can play 3 fiddling songs: “Orange Blossom Special”, “Irish Washerwoman”, & “Bile em Cabbage Down”. I wish I knew more, but those are the ones I learned when I was very young and I haven’t learned anymore since. Thanks for making this great channel. I am going to keep watching.🎻
Nice! John and I have never met, but we became friends because of our mutual appreciation of homemade instruments. Thank you for enjoying these instruments!
sweet job
wonderful sound
well played
Thank you!
I like those simple pegheads. I’ve considered doing one on a gourd banjo at some point.
I sure do like the sound of that fiddle. Great playing.
Thanks Aaron. This fiddle actually sounds better recorded than it does close to my ear. Funny, I can hear the scratchiness close to my ear, but not so much on the recording.
Good work.
Thank you!
Nice!
Thanks!

What make is the bridge, manufacturer, dimensions of your bridge? How high are the strings above the body at the bridge? Does your bow clear the body when bowing at an angle the E string? Thanks!
Whew! That's a bunch of questions! This fiddle has been sold, so I can't take actual measurements. The bridge is of my own making and is taller than a factory made bridge. I made the neck angle a bit more than normal so the high bridge would still allow for an easily playable string distance from the fingerboard. Plus, this is a fairly narrow box, so there wasn't a problem with the bow hitting the box on the e or G string. A lot of trial and error went into the entire process!
@@morbanjo2503 gotcha. just finished a kit build and it sounds great BUT the bow hitting the box on mine is a problem and my little brain thought a taller bridge might give me some room. Yours looked taller, so that’s why I asked. My fingerboard is low action and could be increased without affecting playability with a taller bridge. So Imma headin’ down that road. Thanks for the reply and info!
@@peterdstover Which kit did you use?
@@morbanjo2503 Americana fr CB Gitty.
@peterdstover I made that kit too! I'm not sure why you're having an issue with the bow hitting the box. I'll pull mine out and see how close it is while playing the e string.
