The Sad Life of a Wild West Saloon Girl...

  • Whether it was in their dress, behaviour, or attitudes regarding sex, women were keen on shedding the hysterical fixation society had on what it meant to be a proper woman. In the west, anyone could be who they wanted to be.
With this change in attitudes came an influx in nicknames and labels. “Daughters of sin,” “doves of the roost,” and “nymphs du prairie” were common monikers heard in America’s heartland. The 49ers of California’s gold mines called their shady ladies “soiled women” and “painted cats.” You might hear a cowboy refer to someone as a “scarlet lady” or “fallen angel.” In the end, they were all the same concept -- culture-changing women of the west. And one of their favorite abodes? The saloon. And thus the era gave birth to: saloon girls.

Very interesting video. I know in the saloons that they had bath houses and the saloon girls would help bathe them, and when it came to the saloon girls taking baths. They would add perfumes to it

They always show pretty Dancehall and Saloon women but in fact most were over weight and not so good looking. I felt sorry for them. Most were young with no family to speak of or they ran away to find a better life. I’m sure it was a very hard life. A lot were abused by their customer’s. Men were hard core, most didn’t need a woman except for sex. Too bad.

The old west wasn't filled with "wild women" and prostitutes. As the old west was filling up, the majority of women were stay at home mothers. Why wouldn't you do a video on the decent ladies, or respectable ladies, stay at home mothers types of the old West? This gives us the full picture. Don't just focus on the minority of the old west. Yeah, why not make a video on the majority of women in the old west were stay at home mothers???

He made it sound like stay-at-home mothers had horrible jobs. Frankly, I'd rather not be a saloon girl, get syphilis, and/or commit murder by abortion. I'd prefer being a mother of "eight children and milking a cow".

I agree. And after that, he can make a video on how long it took paint to dry in The Wild West

Besides the above, too many of them died giving birth. The maternal/infant mortality rate of that period was astronomical.

@@chuckcafiero4546 also .... Do you think the brain chemistry of a 19th Century woman is different than the modern day female's brain chemistry? Genuinely curious.....
