How To Get Respect Without Being A Bully - Jordan Peterson
goo.gl/DLouoh
Jordan Peterson recently expertly handled a debate during an interview with BBC's Channel 4 news (The video was called: Jordan Peterson debate on the gender pay gap, campus protests and postmodernism). And JBP did it without being a bull or being aggressive. So how do we get respect without being a bully? Well, we often think that getting respect and being aggressive go hand in hand. Because unfortunately, it’s often the bully that gets the most respect in the schoolyard and even in the workplace. But Jordan Peterson is an exemplar of a different way to generate massive amount of respect. So in this video we’re going to explore 3 main things he does that force people to respect you WITHOUT being a bully.
Now, we focused a lot on respect in this video but that's actually just one out of four emotions that are going to create an amazing first impression on anyone cross-culturally. Now, if you're curious with the other three emotions that you want to create in that person are to make an amazing first impression, I made a video on that that breaks down what those four emotions are so that you can start using them today to consistently make killer first impressions.

You forgot one of the main reasons Peterson commands respect: his thorough knowledge of the topic, he knows his stuff.
lokanoda yea, people quickly sniff out ignorants (lots of words with 0 substance)
Yeah exactly, he is extremely intelligent and well read. This also raises another point, you probably shouldn't argue about things you know nothing about. People are too willing to do this nowadays and should probably just sit back and listen more rather then arguing and fighting.
Except his continued insistence that "Postmodern Neo Marxism" is a thing when both terms are in direct contradiction of each other.
@@katiest.vincent4283 It is a contradiction, but many of the socialists and Marxists he debates consider themselves postmodern, which is probably why he uses those terms together.
@@humantacos9800 No. He uses them because the term is the new boogeyman to western conservatives. If he truly cared about facts and intellectual integrity he wouldn't repeatedly use it in his writings or his debates. Peterson is the master at using "intellectual" sounding words to talk in circles.
"Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across"
Manipulating people like this isn't always the best strategy. Usually it's something very clear like: I heard what you said (restate it), however, here's what I need, here's how you can benefit, you do a, b, c very well, it's been 5 minutes, hope [insert childs or spouse name] is doing well... oh... gotta run.

My husband son & I went to one of his lectures. It was full of couples, whole families with their young teens girls & boys. Lots of older people both sexes and we were expecting it would be an audience full of young men. It was so diverse races, & genders. What a fantastic thinker for our times.

Oh please. You have fallen into the ‘woke’ cesspool. It doesn’t matter who comprised the audience and you evaluated their value. A ‘woke’ tactic that you bought hook, line and sinker. Dr. Peterson would shake his head at your post as he would feel all his talks came to naught.
Peterson should run for Prime Minister....great thinker.
Yes yes!! All of us together, as we are, Humans!!!❤
These days he is a total right wing grifter and seems totally nutty. I don't know where he pivoted into insanity, maybe cuz he needed a paycheck? But a Canadian spouting off about American politics and preaching his new mssg on the Daily Wire isn't exactly a great source for critical thinking and societal improvement.

As my Leadership/History/Philosophy teacher once said: "Argue to learn, don't argue to fight".
I DO THAT! I've argued with my teachers, and I've argued with various professionals, knowing I was wrong. I find it an efficient way to learn. (It usually becomes apparent to them, especially the teachers, what I'm doing.
I was always taught by my parents to understand where the opposing side is coming from, even of you don't agree. That way it's a less hostile anf respectful debate
Amen
Peterson: "You should argue, but you should argue toward peace"
That's what I like to do!
He's a psychologist, and a good one because he thoroughly understands psychological principles in practice. He understands how people communicate and how to listen. Also his vocabulary is amazing, instilling respect for his mind, and it's all natural for him because he is in fact very intelligent.
He's also intuitively connected out of complete linear construct. His spiritual and physical reality is balanced.
That’s why he’s a 1 in a million talent. Truly a legend in terms of charisma and speech
Except he's really not. Charisma is literally defined as a compelling attractiveness or charm that inspires devotion in others. When more than half of the people who are aware of your existence hate your guts, and the only people who seem to see that charm or attractiveness in you are the ones that already agreed with your obvious prejudices, clearly there's nothing "compelling" there. You wanna see real charisma? Look to guys like The Rock, Terry Crews, Keanu Reeves, Chris Hemsworth - the kind of guys that next to nobody has a bad word to say about, no matter what walk of life they come from. That's charisma.
I guess I'd give you speech in that he has a good vocabularly and speaks with confidence and conviction.... but I mean, so do dictators. So do sociopaths. So do cult leaders (which frankly I'd argue he's verging on himself.) That's not only not always a good thing, but in the wrong person it's a very dangerous quality.
He also purposely appears weak, then proceeds to cut people down if they come for him. But, he lifts them back up with empathy. One of the most charismatic people of the new millennium.
Rope-a-dope, baby.
Meh. Like those are new ideas! This dude "Jesus" came up with all that years ago. Jordan is just copying him and passing it all off as his own material!

To express your differing opinion but leave listener feeling validated is my aim in any discussion where there may be conflict of idea or beliefs or learnings.. And for me to learn.. I do know it can be difficult.. I feel proud after constructive chats like that
So the idea is to not to want to make people respect you, but to learn to listen and engage with the ideas of others, even if they counter your perspectives, and allow the one with the more compelling ideas to influence the other. Behaving in this manner will foster respect from those around you because you will deserve it.
Jordan is such a gentleman, without being a pushover in any manner. He’s a complex, brilliant, strong and sensitive man. Absolutely love him as a father figure in psychology and philosophy. He’s constantly growing himself, even at his level. That’s true humility

@@fcos9704 not at all he just gives people advice to change and improve their lives or feel better about themselves. You know like a father does. Lol you have head in anus syndrome
One of the best, and honestly hardest to implement, pieces of advice I've gotten is to talk to other people as if they have something important they could teach you.
Just to be clear, not everyone has something important to teach you. But act that way.
People try to pin JP down on that one all the time. "Aren't you supposed to act as if someone has something to teach you?" Sure, but that doesn't mean you're obliged to automatically agree with them. You may never. It's just a concession that you don't know everything.
Well, everyone has something, positive, negative, as examples that one can learn from. Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. Hard to remember that sometimes for me as I let other things become more important than people sometimes. I need to be cognizant of that always. Have a good one, friends.
Respect breeds respect... actively listening and trying ti understand someone/ their point of view...a respectful action... will ultimately bring respect
The first point is what I have learned from many good debate session and I have been using it ever since, it is easier to change people mind that way, by seeing things through others point of view, try to understand their points, looking for a common ground in an argument is very important
When I'm in an argument I always make sure the other person feels heard and understood. I validate their opinions but what usually happens is they think I'm agreeing with them and they start to act even more smug and be all "see, I'm right you're wrong." And that right there just makes me want to punch their face with a chair
most people just want to hear that their right but continue being you and hopefully little by little it rubs off to some ppl.
Punch away.
A good listener/debater concedes to the other argument. Also ask questions that demand evidence. The goal is not to make them feel stupid but remind them of their burden of proof if they’re debating something.
U have to explain ur own story the way they will believe you more.

Thank you for giving us this opportunity to get to know Jordan Peterson.
Knowledge is Power. Now I understand & like him.
One key point is the fact that Jordan Peterson is a highly educated doctor in academia. A lot of people who try to argue their point are not 'that' well educated. Their egos are not controlled by their intellect. Dr. Peterson is in control of his ego. That's power.
TheWinterShadow this.
To be fair, a lot of incredibly intelligent people are still incredibly egotistical. They see that intelligence as putting them far above anyone else, and thus no one elses point matters. I am glad that Doctor Peterson is not one of those people. I don't agree with a lot of the things he has to say, scientifically backed or not, but I will always respect the man for how he handles matters.
I believe what helps him is his genuine need to understand life and people.
TheWinterShadow ~really well said. Just because someone isn’t winning a debate doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are talking about. Emotion can control ones views to the point of them being crippled by the means of communication and confrontation.

I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. I was asked "why so happy all of a sudden?". I met Jordan Peterson.

And.... that said, the comment about the ages 20, 40, then 70 of how we react to others caring about us is totally accurate! I am the oldest I've ever been (obviously, still alive.... grin) and caring about other's perception of me and respect they give me is down to this in my life..... "Sure I'd prefer people to respect and like me as opposed to not.... but .... if not.... some will, some won't.... and life goes on." Blessings everyone. Have a good one.
@@afterburned06 after many years trying to “spin plates”, in an attempt to keep others happy, I have learned my happiness needs to be more important and I spent years fighting the good fight, to keep myself happy! Your comment is helpful, also very true! I am no longer that girl. As my daughter used to say; “check yourself before you wreck yourself!” By George I Think I’ve Got It! 😎🙏
@@americanpatriot7247 Wise words...
Now not too sure about "herd" though... definitely more "pack" man, me.
But to be "your brother's keeper"and "caring"...now on that I stand with you 100%.
Now standing together or standing alone...I know which I'd prefer.
...and I certainly know which makes me stronger...
Like the name by the way us Irish love our American 'bigger brothers'...
I loved this!
A lot of what I'm hearing here, I learned by stuudying the work of Dr. Haim Ginott and his two students Farber and Mazlich. One title says it all, "How to talk so your child will listen, and how to listen so your child will talk."
Changed my life.
Three tools I learned there were 1. Realize that you want to understand how the other person is feeling and thinking. 2. Speak softly so that the person has to engage with you to hear you. 3. "Allow people the dignity of forming their own conclusions." Dr. Haim Ginott.

Good show. You picked the perfect person to represent your points. Very helpful.
Thank you
He is very knowledgeable..so he has confidence which in of itself commands respect.
It's taken me over two years of watching Jordan to not only understand, but to be able to start incorporating his genuine concern for others while effectively communicating. Genius.
*_John 3.16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”_*

@@williammunny9916 Seriously you shouldn't drink and post.
A character from a Clint Eastwood movie mindlessly proselytizing on UA-cam has nothing to offer but their own delusions.
I know exactly what you mean, Stephen. I see that dear JP is constantly suffering and transforming. He teaches with such coherence because his life goes before his words - he walks to talk. Bless him

This is one of the best observational videos I've ever seen/heard.
Thanks for this valuable info!
I got a sudden urge to clean my room...
EXXTSON
What to do when you share a room with a careless slob? Ooh wait, I will get a new room/mate?
Nevermind let them all live in their filthy pens. My side is clean.
Next lesson....
Do it! You'll feel better after

hah - good one !
EXXTSON thanx 4 reminding me that I need 2 do the same. 😊😅
I think it's also nice how Jordan extends empathy to the other persons position in the conversation without ignoring the danger of their position when it is something like the regulation of speech which should not be made light of. In other words he has the capacity to patiently hear their position and strongly criticize it simultaneously.
In a world where most people are trying to "one up" the other person, JP is trying to educate AND better the world around him; he's doing that by making each person to be responsible about their own lives and with time they will improve their families, friends, communities. That by itself could change the world but unfortunately the world is against that type of mentality
I'm commenting before watching the video, which is wrong but here we go: If you don't respect yourself, like true respect from the bottom of your heart, then nobody will. Maybe some will pretend they do, but that's all, no true respect.
Here is the thing: love yourself, then you will respect yourself and others as a consequence. Then, you won't need others to show love or respect to you anymore.
Another key point: respectable individuals will respect you. Assholes will disrespect you, no matter what.
Peace.
I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dr. Peterson. I changed my entire life just watching his stuff on UA-cam. Very few people have that kind of power. I hope he continues to inspire and do great work ❤️
Hazar Younis same. I have gone to church almost all my life and they have never inspired the same level of change.
Start thinking for yourself fool
Presiqn Qnkov....and may I ask where you get your ideas from, Mr. I’m-so-original?
Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things.
To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him.
That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.
Han Jou exactly. Plus he is a divergent thinker, which makes him expand an idea to another area.
Totally agree!
Yeah, my vote's with you.
Han Jou,
Well, it's not difficult when you know what you know. But things I heard from Peterson so far (capitalism as a good efficient system, veganism as cult, and he being "a believer") are wrong, I can't believe people change their mind to *that* kind of thinking/ideas/interpretations... He is a good speaker, maybe born maybe learnt, but he is wrong (on the subjects I heard him talk).
this is a great observation
Thank you for your Channel update God bless you
Jordan Peterson, pays attention and listens very very well. By listening so well, he hears the words being used, then he moves in to gain clarity, understanding and truth.
And to top it off, he is genuine and totally invested in assisting others to open their eyes wide open generally with kindness.
He is so damn sincere and deeply well informed while being sage in his application for wisdom. Brilliant 👌, fabulous and almost mesmerising.
Thank you sir 😊🙏
Got notified about this video just as I was watching one of Dr. Peterson's lectures. So happy Charisma on Command is finally covering him
You said it. So many people in here are discovering Dr. Peterson because of CoC, however the fact is Peterson has been a man of great importance to the world for a very long time. I think that debate really spurred him into the minds of the muggles, and perhaps we can even build a better world for it.
Everyone is a hero in their story. Thats why its important to listen
Iury Cabeleira what?
I enjoyed this video, it helped me, entertained me and made me a better person. All in 11 minutes. That is smarter use of my time than watching the endless bad news videos. Thank you.
This man is respectable and he's good people. Hopefully he sticks around and takes care ❤️. Also cool videos!

The Jordan Peterson we all know and love.
I DON'T KNOW WHY IT IS ..BUT, I GET THIS AWFUL BAD GUT FEELING, WHEN PEOPLE REFER TO MOVIES AS A EXAMPLE OF 'ANYTHING' ?! I ONLY FIND FEW " MOVIES " INTERESTING, OR EVEN ENTERTAINING ! RARELY, IF EVER, WOULD I RECALL SOME LINE FROM A MOVIE AS ANYTHING WORTH REMEMBERING , FOR ANY GOOD REASON !! MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME ..BUT I GUESS I DON'T SEE THEM AS IN ANYWAY 'REAL' ..OR HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE 'REAL' 'WORLD' !! MORE LIKE 'CHEWING GUM' FOR THE 'EYE BALLS', A WAY TO PASS SOME TIME ,WHILE YOUR WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, OR YOUR BORED , HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL TO DO, NO READING MATERIAL WORTHWHILE AROUND , OR TRYING TO MAKE A LONG WAIT, NOT SEEM SO LONG !!? I GET ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO POINT TO SOMETHING THEY HEARD OR SAW IN A MOVIE AS A REFERENCE ..MAYBE I DIDN'T SEE THAT MOVIE ! OR IF I MIGHT HAVE, JUST NEVER GAVE IT ANY REAL THOUGHT OR ATTENTION !!
I WOULD RATHER READ A GOOD BOOK WELL WRITTEN ..AND GET MY INFORMATION, INSPIRATION , IDEAS , THOUGHTS ON " THINGS " FROM THAT AS APPOSED TO A "MOVIE" !? I THINK OF MOVIES AS MORE OF , IT WAS ENTERTAINING ,FUNNY, SCARY , SAD , INTERESTING, STRANGE , DIFFERENT, BORING , BAD , POORLY MADE , ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WOULD I REMEMBER ANYTHING FROM A MOVIE AS IMPORTANT , UNLESS IT WOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY ..A TEACHING MOVIE , HISTORICAL , "IF" AND ONLY "IF" IT WAS ACCURATE !! I JUST DO NOT HOLD MOVIES IN HIGH ESTEEM !
AND I HATE TO WATCH A MOVIE MORE THEN ONCE .. MY RECALL IS VERY GOOD ! SO I DON'T WANT TO SIT THROUGH IT AGAIN !!! THAT'S THE VERY "HEIGHT OF BOREDOM" TO ME !!
No mention of fishing for the fish that can’t be fished before fishing Jordan’s loves horses rideing every Thursday morning regardless of his daylight working schedule Jennifer please diocesan the fence 🌹🎲🌹

Respect at the gal at 10:13. Whatever point she was trying to make, she was explaining calmly and methodically with ten or twelve guys who could start yelling at her (potentially). I'm sure that many of the gentlemen there were respectful and open-minded, but a better forum would be for everyone to be sitting in chairs and a moderator present. The fact that she and Mr Peterson could talk and that the gentlemen in the background were courteous is an example for all of us.
Ton of lessons in this short video. Well done.
JORDAN IS THE HERO WE NEED
no he's not
Mugiwara no Link how messy is your room?
No, you're the hero you need, you just have to save your father from the belly of a dragon first!
Alespider thank you for asking the right questions.
But not the hero we deserve
About Damn time!
Charisma had to clean his room first, don't wanna end up like those bloody marxists who are resentful and bitter.
Preach
Takar 109 lol nice
Sean Henry Newman wtf? You clearly don't understand Marxism. Peterson is a wonderful speaker and sounds so smart and reasonable he appears to make sense, just think it over a bit, go a little deeper and you'll start to question his subtext. He's really very simple and not all that helpful for most people
sylvieis agreed. Peterson also often sounds very bitter and angry at colleges - he doesn't come across well at all imo. He has a very rabid cult though who seem to believe he's God and can do or say no wrong.
someone said: "love your neighbour as yourself" and added even "love your enemies." I think that Jordan Peterson made these statements a rule of life. That's why he's so successful and revered.
Jesus said , love your enemies!
the few classes that were embarked upon learned a bit about how not to react and it is very hard depending on what code you live in.
Respect is earned. Deference or submission is commanded.
"Clean up your room" means also to start getting your live in order in little steps. It's the idea that if your life is a mess, surely there is always one little part that you can do to make your life a little better. This in the end spirals you upwards. You don't just go out fight the dragon, you first get your armour fixed and think about what exactly you will do, which ultimately raises your chances of killing the dragon.

Man, I feel so much better prepared for any future conversations. I did also pick up on the interviewer slightly too aggressive with that young girl. It wasn't necessary so you really have watch what you say, and have levels of passive aggressiveness, which you said that already. My brother does that or used to and it's really easily spotted. It made feel confused and anxious. As you said, consider who your concerning with.....I just learned something that will really help me. Thank you so much!!
