    If anyone is curious, this song is about the start of Baldurs' end. Odin, his father, began having visions or dreams of Baldurs death, he was scared because Baldur was the Shining God, loved by all. So he mounted Sleipnir and rode to Hel, and sees the place being readied for a festival. Odin (disguised) asks a seeres whats going on and they say that they are preparing for Baldurs demise.
    After this song, Odin goes back and tells Frigg that Baldur is destined to die. She does not want this, and so she goes to (almost) every creature to secure an oath that they would not harm Baldur. Everything loves Baldur, so everything that is asked agrees.
    During the celebration back is Asgard, everyone is throwing items at Baldur just to see him become unharmed. Loki asks Frigg if she got an oath from EVERYTHING, and she said not mistletoe, as that plant is too weak to hurt anything.
    Loki goes to the Blind God, Hodr, and says that he must be sad because he can't join in on the fun of throwing things at Baldur. Hodr basically nods yes, and then Loki hands Hodr a bow and an arrow made of mistletoe and points him to Baldur, and Hodr shoots Baldur, not knowing the arrow would kill Baldur.
    The arrow killed Baldur instantly and everyone was shocked and stood still. Eventually, they send someone to Hel to beg Hel(the goddess) to return Baldurs soul. She agrees she will if EVERYONE sheds a tear for Baldur at his funeral.
    All creatures in existence shed a tear, except one Jotunn, most likely Loki in disguise. S(he) says, "Let Hel hold what she has!" and because of this, Baldur trapped forever.
    They capture Loki, tie him to a rock in a cave, and drip poison onto his face. His thrashes of pain give us earthquakes. Hes destined to remain there until Ragnarok, until he breaks free and leads an army of Jotunn into Asgard, where he and Heimdall will kill each other.
    The death of Baldur is seen as the first event in Ragnarok. This song is about the start to the end of everthing.

    • @acestillwell98
      @acestillwell98 2 роки тому +7

      @@angelabellis6492 Theres a few more details that make the story more interesting, like how Loki transforms into a fish to try and escape, or that they tie Loki to a boulder with his sons intestines.
      A part that I like is that while poison drips on Loki, his wife holds a bowl to catch the poison to help her husband, but when the bowl is empty, she has to dump it out, allowing the drips to hit Loki.

    0:58 Alda Gautr just means 'Old Goth' as in the Germanic people group that often gets associated by the medieval Norse with notions of power and dominion. Odin's other names for instance in Skaldskaparmal and Othins nofn are Gautatyr and Siggautr, meaning 'God of the Goths' and 'Victorious Goth' respectively. If this line meant 'old enchanter' it would be something along the lines of 'alda galdrmann', 'old magic man'
    I know this is all from the Henry Adam Bellows' translation of Baldrs Draumr before anyone points it out.

    Once were the gods together met,
    And the goddesses came and council held,
    And the far-famed ones the truth would find,
    Why baleful dreams to Baldr had come.
    Then Odin rose, the enchanter old,
    And the saddle he laid on Sleipnir's back,
    Thence rode he down to Nilfhel deep,
    And the hound he met that came from hell.
    Bloody he was on his breast before,
    At the father of magic he howled from afar,
    Forward rode Odin, the earth resounded
    Till the house so high of Hel he reached
    Then Odin rode to the eastern door,
    There, he know well, was the wise woman's grave
    Magic he spoke and mighty charms,
    Till spell-bound she rose, and in death she spoke:
    "What is the man to me unknown
    That has made me travel the troublous road?
    I was snowed on with snow and smitten with rain
    And drenched with dew, long was I dead"
    "Vengtam my name, I am Valtam's son
    Speak thou of hell for of heaven I know
    For whom are the benches bright with rings
    And the platforms gay bedecked with gold?"
    "Here for Baldr, the mead is brewed
    The shining drink and a shield lies o'er it
    But their hope is gone from the mighty gods.
    Unwilling I spake and now would be still"

    Un jour, les Dieux se rencontrèrent ensemble,
    Et les Déesses vinrent également, pour un Thing ;
    Et le plus légendaire de tous désira trouver la vérité
    Sur la cause de la venue des sinistres rêves de Baldr…
    Alors Odin se leva, le vieil ensorceleur,
    Et sa selle il harnacha sur le dos de Sleipnir ;
    De là il chevaucha jusqu'aux profondeurs de Niflheim,
    Et, venant de Helheim, rencontra le chien de l'enfer !
    Ensanglanté il était sur tout son poitrail,
    Et sur le Père du Seidr, il hurla de loin ;
    Odin poursuivit sa chevauchée au-delà, la Terre résonnant
    Jusqu'à ce qu'il atteigne la Halle si vaste de Hel.
    Alors Odin chevaucha jusqu'à la porte orientale,
    Et, là-bas, il sut bien où trouver la tombe de la Sage-Femme ;
    Le Seidr il psalmodia alors, invoquant de puissants sortilèges,
    Jusqu'à ce qu'elle fût envoûtée et qu'elle s'arrache du sol pour parler d'outre-mort !
    (La Völva d’une voix d’outre-tombe)
    Quel est l’homme, m’étant inconnue,
    Qui m’a fait reprendre le chemin de la peine ?
    J’ai été ensevelie par la neige, et battue par la pluie,
    Et trempée par la rosée alors morte depuis longtemps.
    (Odin à son tour)
    Vegtam est mon nom, je suis le fils de Valtam ;
    Parlez de ce que j’ignore de l’enfer, moi qui sais tout des havres célestes :
    Pour qui les bancs sont dressés d’anneaux brillants
    Et les estrades bien joyeusement ornées d’or ?
    (La Völva l’air absente)
    Ici, en l’honneur de Baldr, est brassée l’hydromel,
    Le breuvage doré, un bouclier brandi au-dessus de lui ;
    Mais l’espoir des Puissants Dieux s’en est allé.
    Peu je suis disposée à en dire plus, me retirant dés lors maintenant !

      must be a translating mistake
      another site says that part means "The floor fully"
      so it becomes "The floor fully
      Flowed in gold"
      that or the platforms might really be gay

    *extremely masculine war song praising Odin as warriors are behind you, ready to rescue your brother from the clutches of your enemy*
    Ubisoft: 'So anyway, Eivor is canonically a woman'
    lmao to any cucks who play as female Eivor.

    • @rateater1857

      Chill, nobody cares what Ubisoft says is canon, and female Eivor and male Eivor are literally the same person, and it's really great that you can choose which version you wanna play.

      @@rateater1857 that would be good and all if Ubisoft literally didn't give a shit about your choice and makes one sex canon. Especially when this affects the gameplay. In the previous game I chose Alexios and put in over 350 hours with that character. Couldn't they mention that the eagle bearer was a figure of legend, and that they couldn't determine which DNA strain belonged to the canon protagonist, so none of the choices are not 'canon' respecting your character choice? Lmao no, a Greek Spartan mercenary ship captain and male pankration winner is a woman. Same with Eivor. They could've chosen a unisex name. They could've created that ambiguity in order to allow both characters. But no, the 'shield maiden' (which is very disputed as even existing) is the canon character and the male DNA it reads is just Odin imprinting his DNA on a human. Canonically, Eivor is a woman. If you play as male Eivor, you're literally playing with a skin. This is why I refused to give any more money to ubishit.
