You guys keep getting confused by the guys with the black helmets. Those are known as "Delta Force". They're an elite unit and all they do is train and prepare every day. Because they are so skilled, they are allowed to do a lot on their own & they don't necessarily need to follow standard military rules.
This has nothing to do with colonialism. This was a humanitarian mission that got caught in the middle of A civil war A famine and civil war broke out In Somalia in 1992 after a drought and the Communist government falling when the Soviet union fell and no longer propped up the Somalian communist party with funding. Almost 200,000 Somalis died before American or UN troops got there. The United Nations sent a humanitarian relief effort to provide food, medical help and protection. To the people of Somalia. Besides the US sending doctors and troops many other countries in Europe,.The middle East and Africa did including many Muslim countries like Pakistan, Egyot, Malaysia, Tunisia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. The June before the mission. Depicted in the movie the Habr Hidr tribe, one of the tribes fighting for control of the country ambushed and Killed 23 Pakistani(so fellow Muslims) soldiers who where part of the United nations peacekeeping force who had gone to inspect a warehouse thought to be used by the Habr gidr to store weapons. The US who was a ally of The Pakistani government so this attack as a escalation by The Habr Gidr and there leader Mohammed Farrah adid and over the next few months more attacks against UN personnel and Somali civilians continued. President Clinton authorized a mission to capture or kill Aidid, the leader of the Habr Gidr and the US military sent a task force not under IN authority by under the authority of US special operations command to hunt for Aidid and the tribes leaders. This is the task force in the film it was called Task force Ranger (as the 75th ranger regiment made up the bulk of the force) and was mostly troops from the sent - the bulk was a company from the 75th ranger regiment(the younger guys with the shaved heads). As well as a squadron from the Armies most elite unit Delta force(the guys who where the black hockey style helmets and carry the m-4 style carbines) and the United States best helicopter pilots then members of the 160th Speical operations aviation regiment but also include a few navy Seals and some air force special operations units(particularly combat medics and combat controllers) and some members of US army Intelligence and the CIA special activities division. The US did not authorise the the hunting to the leadership of the Habr Gidr tribe till the Habr Gidr tribe had Murdered 23 Pakistani Muslims!
lol, the civil war was started by the us for gains. The Russians(ussr) were playing both sides of the war between Somalia and Ethiopia. Unless you saw it first hand or had a friend there that saw what actually happened bro, don’t believe what you hear/see on the news man
The reason 29 countries intervened in Somalia was because the civil war had cost 300k civilians their lives. They estimated if food couldn’t be safely delivered soon, they feared millions could starve.
Yes - absolutely true. I just googled it. The battle from the movie „Black Hawk Down“ is known as „the battle of Mogadishu“ and was only the outburst of over 2 years of civil war in Somalia at that point. When Somalias dictator died in the late 1980s there was a vacuum of power. And now the old clans of Somalia where wanting their old land back. So they started fighting one another! The UN interveened because this but hering quickly resulted into a hunger crysis where hundereds of thousands died. Then the clans where also attacking the Pakisthani UN-Soldiers cause the also saw the UN as messing with theie interests. And so the UN needed to semd other troops (some of them the USA) to get one of those clan leaders. However the capturing mission was successfull - the US Military quickly got suck in the old town of Mogadishu and what was ment to be a 30min operation turned out to be a bloody battle for the entire night. From the late afternoon of october 3rd and the night of october 4th 1993 the fights went on. At the end about 1.000 Somalies (largely combatants of the clans but also civilians) died, some UN blue helmets and around 20 US-Soldiers. It was one of the very rare occasions where the UN and the USA worked for a greater good btw. However the battle was devatating.
I am critical of many American political and military interventions, but as pointed out by several posters, this nightmare was actually purely motivated and a good cause. No good deed goes unpunished as the saying goes...
Honestly you can say alot about our military and were we intervene, but dammit Somalia was one of the times we truly wanted to help but failed to do so
Black: the UN coalition efforts in Somalua had nothing to do with oil, politics etc. It was an effort to stop the genocide and famine caused by Muhammed Farah Adid. To stop a humanitarian crisis. And realize Adid was a dictator.
So why arent we at war with China right now? Its in a dictatorship and has had genocides that we didnt try to stop. Maybe its because we rely on China?
But don't you find ot ironic that the followers of the religion of compassion have more advanced military tactics than the ones of the religion of the sword? ........ Shouldn't it be the other a around?!?!? So in what way does the religion of compassion seem surperior to the religion of the sword?
It was initially a UN Mission to relieve a famine after a horrible drought in Somalia and intervene in a civil war between Somali tribes to prevent a genocide
McKnight, the guy who was just walking around upright while being shot at, really did do that. He said afterward that he was scared as hell and kept wanting to duck, but made the conscious decision & made a purposeful effort to stay upright & walking calmly anyway for the sake of his men. Demonstrating calm & composure helped keep his soldiers calm & composed as well.
according to Air Force Combat Controller Dan Schilling, who sat behind McKnight in the Humvee and coordinated movements of the convoy with the Command and Control helicopter as well as air support, McKnight did not return to the battlefield as part of the rescue convoy. He had been shot twice and was pulled from the fight. A Major named Nixon took his place in the Humvee when the rescue column went to the port to link up with the Pakistani and Malaysian soldiers.
The Somalis were fighting each other in a civil war. The civil war stopped farming in Somalia, which caused a famine. The UN sent food to feed the starving Somali people. Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia sent soldiers to help the UN food distribution. Warlord Aidid started attacking UN food distribution operations in an effort to take food for his soldiers. The UN asked the US for help protecting their food distribution. The US was involved only at the request of the UN, and only to stop the attacks on UN food distribution. The US and UN did not make any effort to intervene in the civil war or support any particular faction except to try to stop Aidid's attacks on the UN food operations. Sorry to disappoint your world view, but this was not anything to do with colonialism or religion. It was about one bad Somali leader hurting his own people because he wanted political power..
How is that ? You act like The US doesn't have a history of manipulating masses and into justifying massacres. May be US intervention was necessary in this conflict, may be not. It certainly wasn't necessary in Vietnam Iraq or Afghanistan. Just because the US has a valid reason on paper to go butcher people doesn't mean they actually have a valid reason. Still looking for Iraqi WMDs. Even if the UN sanctioned something that doesn't mean the intervention is justified. We live in a world of double standards and schemes. Just how Israel can butcher civilians and the media is silent, but God forbid a Russian missile hits something civilian.thaen it's proof that Putin is Hitler 2.0 😂😂
@EyeseeUriP look up the Battle of Mogadishu. Then read "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War" by Mark Bowden. Then if you want you can read some the of the news articles out there. One of them is Washington Post article titled, "SGT. GORDON'S LAST RESCUE." Another is LA Times article titled: "Dead Soldier Dragged Through Somali Streets a Modern-Day Unknown : Mogadishu: Pentagon says naming the mob’s victim serves no purpose and would only pain those who loved and lost him." Plenty out there.
@EyeseeUriP Ready anything that isn't communist or muslim propaganda for starters. You're too ignorant to argue the point. You know nothing about any of the conflicts.
Rwanda civil war happened soon after Somalia with 800k killed.. Because of the blowback at home in the US and abroad from this Somalia mess..no one showed up in Rwanda
There is a really interesting book, No Greater Love, by Tharcisse Seminega, a survivor of that Rwanda incident. He has insider insight into what transpired. I had not realized that Rwanda was majority Christian and that both sides of the conflict, both Tutsi and Hutu were mostly Christian. Of the denominations in the country, only Jehovah's Witnesses did not participate in the killing. There is a lot more he says, but TL;DR for the comment section.
Somalia was mainly a fishing community. Chinese ships destroyed their oceans by over fishing by dredging nets destroying their fisheries and using it as dumping grounds for harmful chemicals. As far as I remember that sent Somalia into tailspin. Even the Somali pirates came to be because of that, they were just trying to save their only way of life.
@@HistoricalFidelity Right! Don’t get me wrong, I’m sick of late stage capitalism in the US and believe it’s going to eventually screw our nation if we don’t figure something out. But communism or whatever version of communism Russia is (a dictatorship) is 10x worse.
Pakistan was part of the UN coalition in Somalia they were headquartered at a soccer stadium. The scene at the end where the Pakistani soldier brings them water is very moving.
I personally remember this event. I was in the Navy at the time. I saw the bodies of the two snipers that secured the second crash site drug thru the streets. I remember the pilot being released. It was years later that the details were filled in. While this movie has several minor inaccuracies most of it was painfully as accurate as they could make it and fit it into a movie. They got details like the first helicopter landing was firing their personal weapons out the window when they landed at the 1st crash site. This absolutely did happen. And captures the spirit of the American service man.
As crazy as it sounds, everything in this movie really did happen almost exactly as you saw it. And this whole thing happened because Adid was causing a genocidal amount of death. As for why the soldiers wanted to go back in, it was to get adid, but also to rescue their comrade, Mike Durant.
They weren't trying to be "heroes" OR fight their war, for them. They went infor one reason...Relief food was not getting through, so they went in to restore order on food shipments, and remove the one stealing it. Then the U.S. left.
Originally Humvees were NOT bulletproof. Many of them were uparmored during the Iraq War, but this was back in the 90s. The Humvee was originally a replacement for the Army Jeep.
Little known information about this entire incident, there were Malaysians who were VITAL, to the evacuation of the US soldiers, they've gone down in the annals of Delta and Ranger history, they showed a resolve to save American lives that no other nationals have shown before, the Malays were extremely angry with both US, UN, and Malay command for not letting them go out in force to help(many were held back "for their safety"), they wanted and were prepared to go in with everything they possibly could to save lives. The Pakistani's were as well, but they were more hesitant to commit men out of anger of not being involved from the beginning. Many Americans have no idea about the Malaysians involvement in the incident.
There were several thousand peacekeepers in Mogadishu alone, but they were spread out at many places. Aidid's forces alone outnumbered them, but because the main bases were reasonably well protected, and for political reasons, Aidid had not yet tried to overrun them.
There’s a couple of stories from veterans of Operation Gothic Serpent where bodies of US troops were cut up and dumped in front of the US base in garbage bags. The experience was so bad to some that every time they had to take out the trash back home they’d get PTSD.
That’s the way Gordon and Shughart were returned. Dismembered and mutilated, it was barbaric and evil. And all we wanted was to stop the killing. We tried helping them and they repaid us with evil.
My Unit was deployed to Somalia 1 week before I got out of the military. I often wondered how many of them were represented in this movie. I could probably look up some files and see but something tells me to not go there.
I watch you guys all the time... I love you two. You always make me smile. I normally "like" without any post. With that said.... 300,000 Thousand People Killed...Children, Women and Men Killed. Famine. Civil War. You think Americans bully and colonize by risking their lives to feed the children, women & men who are starving to death. (?) You even discussed if you would fight for their brothers/ comrades. If you would "go back". (?) The innocent people dying and starving to death can only hope that you would. WOW. Habibi Brothers you mention "money".... What "money"? We are not hired hands nor militia groups. We do not take hostages for money. We do capture and imprison war criminals. That saddens me. You both watched the humanitarian operation in the beginning. Wow. You do not understand a free people (nation)...nor that freedoms are not free but are often fought for...most times with lives lost. Liberations. Liberated. Liberties. This is not a "money" exchange. Houses, land nor money provides freedom nor liberties, but the liberated Brothers and Sisters united protecting and serving. America does not covet Somalia nor their dictators and oppressors. Finally, everything is not about money. You cannot buy what Americans continue to fight for lest all countries would have these freedoms they desire. America is known to give BILLIONS of dollars amongst other humanitarian resources to countries whether they are our Allies or whether the country is even hostile toward us. You even discussed if you would fight for your brothers/ comrades. If you would "go back". The innocent people dying and starving to death can only hope that you would. I hope you understand my American heart for my brothers and sister and global citizens in much need for humanitarian resources. Like Israel and Gaza... Hamas has caused such a tragedy. I never hear anyone address Hamas. Both nations are suffering and unfortunately, will continue until Hamas stop using Palestine as a political human shield. However, that is going to take Palestinas to say, "ENOUGH! Hamas, ENOUGH"
One of the things about the actual historical event that wasn't mentioned in the movie was that many of the somali fighters were chewing khat, which is a local drug. It made them feel good, almost invincible, got them excited, and reduced their nervousness. This is one of the reasons why they rushed American troops so eagerly, but it also affected their firing accuracy. While the American firepower and training drastically affected how many deaths there were on each side(1000 somali fighters-19 US soldiers) this drug also played a big part.
I remember when this happened. People in the military were furious that they were not allowed to have gunships or heavier military transports because the Clinton administration didn't like the optics of that.
yeah, that really screwed the U.S. up. If we'd at least been allowed the Marine Cobras, things could have gone a lot smoother. But there had been an incident not long before when a group of friendly Somalis had been meeting and the Cobras shot up the building and killed a bunch of innocent Somalis. I'm sure that played a huge part in why the Cobras and AC-130s were kept out of the AO. The 107mm Howitzer cannon on the AC-130 would have rained destruction on the city. If you've never seen the destructive capability of the Specter, the plane is armed with the Howitzer, a 40mm Bofors cannon and a minigun. The pilots have to maintain control of the plane when those guns go off because they will literally move the aircraft sideways when they go off.
You guys may find these guys in helmets crazy and exaggerated. But they are Delta Operators. You should react to videos on them. Their minds consist of strength that force their bodies through impossible tasks. They do not look for the best, strongest people. They only look for the right people. The best people tend to fail before the right people do. In the military, they are the stuff of lore
Somalia got weapons from the Soviet Union After a Communist Revolution there. This fell apart into Civil war between clans. In theory there were elections but the parties were on clan lines so it all went to hell. Somalis knew how to fight at least each other. They did get outside help. In 1991, Osama Bin Laden went to Somalia because the Saudis were after him. And there, The newly formed Al-Qaeda taught their host Somali clans techniques. They had learned in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets including using RPGs against helicopters. The Americans called the Somalis "skinnies" because they were skinny and many were starving. The whole situation is really tragic. During the Civil War, Muhammad Farah Adid sent one of his wives and surviving sons to the United States. Hussein Farrah Aidid became an American Marine and acted as a translator a few months earlier during the first American intervention in Somalia. He was literally translating Somali to English for the Americans, while they were trying to negotiate with his father party/clan. After his father died, he would eventually take over as leader of the clan and party. Life is stranger than fiction
Did two tours in Iraq in 2005 and 2008. Looking back now, we had no reason to go. I did make life long friends however, both soldiers and Iraqis alike. Thanks for the video guys
There is a part in the (-1:11:51) command pre mission brief that the General mentions how their plan called for further assets (armored vehicles, tanks, AC-130 gunship support...) but higher up command denied the request, hence they ended up in a cluster-f**k without the enough of the right tools to solve all the new problems.
I recommend you watch the movie - Lord of War. The film is from 2005 and is based on the biography of international arms dealer Wiktor Buta. The film's producers used real tanks and Kalashnikovs in the production of the film. Because they were cheaper. And they had to notify NATO headquarters. Because there were so many tanks on the plan that NATO might have thought that a war was starting in Europe again. It's hard to miss 50 tanks next to each other from a satellite. Overall, the film would not have been made without the help of several real arms dealers.
You can laugh about the politicians. You can laugh about the warlords. Don't laugh about the soldiers. He was on point about "why". They fight to preserve their lives and the lives of the men with them, all at the same time while trying to accomplish the mission they have been given. Just don't laugh about that.
It’s not that they were not going to kill the boss . They can’t kill him if they were firing at the helicopter, they could fight back, but if you don’t attack a US military man or group by law, they cannot attack you.
Tens of thousands of innocent Somali’s were dying of starvation by warlords. US forces entered Somalia to protect the distribution of food aid, which was being hampered by local the warlords as there was no functional government, since the dictatorship of Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991.
Yeah, the MH-6 Little Bird is a light recon/transport helicopter, and the AH-6 is an attack variant of the MH-6 which is technically still a Little Bird, but because of its effectiveness & incredible firepower earned the Angry Bird nickname.
The Humvees and trucks needed to reach the target area first because they needed to be ready to pick up the detainees once Delta had them in custody. As shown, once the Delta operators had wrapped up the bad guys, the convoy had to roll up and get out of dodge once they picked up the Ranger chalks. The who thing with the Rangers shooting at the Delta operators was because the Rangers had no visual on the operators and several Rangers thought they were enemy soldiers. Humvees are actually very thin-skinned and won't stop bullets on their own. They had up-armored doors delivered to the base so the Humvees would offer more protection to the men. The 4 Navy SEALs from SEAL Team 6 not portrayed in this movie rode in a completely open Humvee. No doors, no window, no roof. Every man on that vehicle got shot multiple times. My favorite bit of trivia is that the helicopter pilot who landed at the first crash site, Chief Warrant Officer Keith Jones, recreated his real life rescue of Sergeant Dan Bush and another Delta operator. He's the only soldier in this film to play himself. Some of the real Rangers and pilots in the movie were actually a part of the battle in 1993 but it's almost impossible to tell who's who.
During the Cold War, the Soviets would give any group that claimed to be Marxists a couple of truckloads of AK's and ammunition. Over 70 million AK's have been made. Now, in sub-Saharan Africa, an old or used AK can be purchased for $50 US dollars.
The general was stuck between orders from above and his men. He had a bad spot as the orders from above had to work within UN guidelines as well. Believe me if you told that general he had full ability to do whatever he wanted you'd like what happened a lot less and it wouldn't have gone down like this. Like the one guy said it's war. The people don't always understand when folks are trying to help them from their own bullies within (Aidid stealing the rations and supplies) though don't get me wrong we stick our nose into things that we have no business. We created Hussein then took him out when he had nothing to do with what we 9/11 but bad actors in our government wanted opportunity there. We support Saudi bombing in Yemen which is horrible. We do horror and heroics and it's maddening. It would be nice if we were a more civilly engaged population with more control over how our government/military comports itself but we aren't which is what I'd hazard to guess is the same with most countries. Folks just want to work go home raise their kids and enjoy their lives. Just like anyone and most are oblivious to what their government really does completely. But say Afghanistan. I feel that was justified. We asked for Bin Laden to be given over. They said no and we went in. Foolishly trying to stay. Afghani's have been ousting invaders since the 1600's France, Britain, Russia. So trying to build a nation failed for all the corruption and the Taliban had it easy to sweep in especially when trump made a one sided deal with them. reduced our troop strength so going back in was out of the question and released 5k taliban fighters and their leader. It was doomed to failure as every pro American Afghani saw that as a signal to drop things and get out and everything crumbled. We aren't always the good guys. But by far we are not always the bad guys. I fail to see any shining bastions of purity in any government. I mean if our noses weren't in Ukraine right now they would have crumbled and Putin would be moving on the next target which would be NATO and a beginning to WW3. And I'd have to say I don't see folks from around the world clamoring to get into Russia or China. So we have to be doing something right. But we are far from perfect that is a surity. We let MBS chop a dude up in an embassy in Turkey just for criticizing the Prince's mistreatment of his people, and we still support Saudi. We created Bin Ladin by supporting Saudi during the first Iraq war when Bin Ladin had offered his mujihadeen to protect the country and the king went with the Americans as their shield that was an insult that resulted in 9/11. We have a long way to go.
1:01:53 is kind of sad when you look at his face. when he picks up the helmet. As I said in another comment. The men with Black Helmets/Vest/Knee Pads are Delta Force, and that was the Helmet of one of the two Delta Snipers that dropped to defend the 2nd Helicopter. He knows them personally.
That was a good guess about this having been a setup. There really isn't any proof that I've seen, but it does look that way. The task force had launched several missions prior to this one and they always followed a basic template. Some variation was added but it was basically the same. Several of those missions were dry holes or wrong targets. For example, the Somalis fired mortars from an NGO compound they broke in to and fhe Rangers came to it and other time they were told a UN compound was an enemy compound and they went there, too. They were also being closely watched. The land rose up from the coast where the airport was and so there were countless vantage points to watch from. The task force also flew many false missions to try to keep Aidid's men guessing, but these also angered the other citizens. But they figured out how to tell which flights were real and which weren't. It was also believed that there were some foreigners there coaching Aidid's men and maybe actively fighting. Tactics such as shooting for the tail rotor is one clue, even though just about any RPG hit on a Blackhawk would do to at least make it have to leave the fight. So was this a set up? It very well could have been. If their communications and discipline had been better they could have trapped and wrecked the convoy. That second group that left the airfield, the one with the man with the cast, actually ran into an ambush that did a lot of damage and if the Somalis had not triggered it too early, it could have been very bad. As it was, they had been hoping to bring down a Blackhawk knowing rescuers would go to it. Then they could trap and attack them and the other units that came to get them. This is basically what they did, but as noted, their communications and lack of discipline let them down. 10th Mountain did know the Rangers had gone in and were in trouble. However, they had to take a long way around the outside of the city to get to the airfield because going through the city was impossible. All they had was Humvs and truck like the Rangers, no tanks or armor. That route took time, but they got there sooner than the movie implies. The Humv doors were supposed to be bullet proof but turned out not to be. Many bullets came through them. The Rangers had actually considerd removing the doors before this mission so they could get in and out more easily. Shields were also available for the turret gunners but these were not used for some reason.
If you have a problem like that and you go to the base and say we need guys to go save our brothers you couldn’t keep one of them from going it’s not volunteer it’s not they ask people you can’t stop everyone from going. This is what they want to do. The only thing that matters is saving another person that’s on your team or in your squad
What a powerful movie, I remember this when it happened. We didnt have much 24 hour news or live international coverage then. But one of the US pilots was taken hostage & a video released of him. I just sobbed seeing him alone, injured, & afraid 😢🙏 They ended up releasing him. It was a UN mission to bring in food as there was a civil war & people were starving & being murdered by a dictator. Thanks guys, I appreciate your efforts to learn about our country 💙
Brothers with all due you respect, you guys have no idea what you're talking about XD The U.S surely has done some bad before, but this part of history wasn't one of them.
Maybe I’m nit-picky but that is SO DISTRACTING. The accent is wrong and the look is MORE wrong. I mean I know a lot of the Americans are played by British and Australian actors…. But they can at least do a convincing American accent.
There was civil war and massive civilian starvation happening. These wars can be traced back to the cold war. The human suffering was unimaginable. That is why the UN went in. Politics and extreme religion are always a good excuse for a fight.
It's interesting to watch both of you struggle to understand something that is beyond your abilities. Nothing personal, but you both come from a different culture with different ideals and a complete lack of knowledge in history. I would never expect you to understand the concept of honor the way Americans do. But, thank you for watching.
The soldiers with the black helmets are mostly members of the Combat Applications Group(CAG) formerly Known as 1st special operations detachment -Delta aka Delta Force,(the US armies elite counter terrorist and direct action force), there where also a few members of Navy Deal team Six(now known as DEVGRU) the Navy's equivalent unit to Delts force (and the US unit that would kill Bin Laden), as well as a small number of Air force special operations troops specifically Combat Controllers(who can guide in aircraft like planes and helicopters to targets) and Pararescuement(combat medics trained to go into battle via parachute or helicopter)
The phones the military uses cannot be called back, because the communications use military sats. Is why she didn't call back. The AK47's a large number of them were left in Afghanistan by the Soviets when they left in 1989. However the Russians have supplied the entire middle east with AK47's, and rpg's. The united states often intercept ships that fly no flags that were ported in Iran, just recently one was seized, upon removing the flooring they found a large cache of about 10,000 AK47's, as well as rockets, and grenade launchers. The U.S. allowed the people to leave on life boats, (knowing most were doing it to earn some money for their families to have food), THE u.s. then sink the shipS and cargo. Mogadishu, Somalia (borders the Indian ocean, thus the Somalia Pirates) the nation is in a power vaccum, it's not entirely it's government at fault, but paramilitary elements funded by Iran. It's ideological landscape is riddled with various factions fighting multiple fronts of civil wars. One of the largest risings of paramilitary organized crime is from it's youth population fighting against rival gangs. It hasn't helped that Somalia has experienced droughts in 2015, continuing into 2024. affecting 36.1 million people. It's a location in which has become nearly impossible to have any sort of organization, or governmental remedy. As soon humanitarian aid is attempted to be brought in, the various factions attack, and or kill off it's non violent parts of society, and battle one another to gain stocks of aid, as recent as April, 2024. This has lead to a backing off of any aid, because of the dangers in having no real centralized governmental control. Iran has achieved it's goal, and if it had it's way it will soon start to attempt to spread it's influence across Africa. Their objective is not to claim ownership, but to cause chaos, no central organized government, will result in the ability of Iran to have free roam across the middle east, and Africa. As no one would be able to negotiate any sort of agreement with nations attempting to qualm the fighting, and starvation of the peoples. There are about 6,000 Muslim U.S. soldiers. In WWII some 5.5 million Muslims served in the war on behalf of the Allied forces, fighting against the Axis. Some 1.5 Million Muslims were killed in WWII.
37:14 to be fair, I’ve never had any military training, but from what I understand, general rules of engagement say that even if they have a gun, you don’t shoot unless they shoot at you first, or show clear signs of threat.
I read Mark Bowdens Blackhawk down before the movie was even made. And the craziness of the battle wasn't portrayed in the movie, it was much worse. And as for Colonel McKnights bravery in combat, he did really walk around like that. Several accounts refer to it. As for the Ranger who fell, Todd Blackburn, there was no RPG, he just fell, no one saw how he fell. As for Grimes the RPG magnet by the end of the fight when they got to the stadium he had no pants left, they completely shredded by the multiple RPG blasts, he was essentially naked from waist down. So many other crazy parts to this story it's hard to believe. If it hadn't been for the little birds and Cobras making strafing runs all night the Rangers would have very likely been overrun. An incredible story of bravery and the bond of combat. I enjoyed your video, thanks
No one turned Somalia into a war zone other than their civil entities that created the famine and war to begin with. The USA was trying to help by removing the factors that were the downfall of the country, the warlords stopping aide to Somalia.
The senior guy that was always walking around without fear of getting shot was actually like that. For the money these guys get paid no one who didn’t believe in what they were doing would go into this shit more than once.
Watching reactions of movies like this is very valuable as you see people such as yourselves who are members of groups (cultures, religions, etc) that are supposed to be “enemies” of the protagonists in the film and you see the common humanity that the reactors display when they see so called enemy😊it’s getting killed or wounded. All that shit falls away and the compassion that is common to us all who haven’t been traumatised by such an existence comes out and we care for each other. Anyone who buys into the propaganda of their country should watch reactions like from these guys to see the truth that most of the people on earth will instinctively care for each others plight if they can just get a glimpse of it.
What's funny about the part where they talk about Somalias owing the family of someone they killed camels in recompense for the death, is that Europeans specifically the Anglo Saxons, Germans, and Scandinavian peoles (many of the white American soldiers would in fact be descendants of these cultures ) did the same thing, in old English it was known as Weregild. Basically the sea was you pay the family of a person you kill I order to prevent the death from causing a blood feud that could last generations
So u know, theguyswith goggles and round helmets are Delta Force operators. They usually operate in one or two man teams. Their personality profiles are narcissistic psychopathic sociopaths. And they are unique, in all the military.
The little helicopters are commonly called "Little Birds". Remarkably nimble light helicopters that can lift just enough take 6 fully armed soldiers or fewer guys but with weapons pods and in an expert pilot's hands can fly around low altitude between buildings or any other obstacles like a damned dragonflies.
To understand ranger mentality. Ttpe in here, Darby Queen Obstacle course, Ranger School, and , what is the Ranger Creed? I was in 1st Ranger battalion myself.
You will never Understand America !!! We were there to Help the Starving People from the War Lords !! We will Die for our Country and the Man or Woman next to us ! No other Country has that Commitment !!!! God Bless America
You don't know much about these two do you? They will understand us, and that's why they are watching American movies and videos about America. They are engineers seeking to become US citizens and work. They have come a long way since they first started. Give them time.
This movie was intense action for one and a half hours. It never stops. Imagine the people they had a higher the guns they had to have the local people they hired Matt just the amount of people they had a higher to make. This movie is amazing and they required local people that they had a trust with guns that fired blanks.
The guys in black vest/helmets/knee pads are Delta Force, at this time in US HIstory this unit the Government denied they existed. Basically, the best of the best of the best. They make US Navy Seals look bad supposedly. It's also why many of the actors portraying Delta Force act above authority, even when dealing with higher ranking US Army Ranger Officers. US Army Rangers are already considered an above average unit within the US Military and Delta is way above them. I really love how they take charge regardless of rank as well, you see the Delta men literally doing their job very well even if they have to go over the heads of the US Ranger Officers.
I don't want to speak for someone else, but for me I see it as they are there trying to make sure the right side win, the side that don't promote anarki and wants what's best for the people as they see how the world should be. Or another analogy is like, you see 2 animals fight or lets say a Lion hunts and gets takes down a ghazel faul maybe, You feel for the ghazel and wants to help that ghazel. You still understand that the lion needs to eat and circle of life and all that, But if you had the power right then and there you might take the opportunity to help the ghazel. It's human nature I think.
The thing about this. Is that it is a movie. Based off a book from a series of articles submitted by Richard Bowden to the Philadelphia Inquirer. What the movie does is combine several people. Because that's Hollywood. My dad once described to me being shot down on a helicopter and that is horrifying. He wasn't a crew member but one of the grunts onboard. So yeah getting shot down in a chopper sucks.
I like how this movie came out in the time with many crappy action movies and it went under the radar for mamy, its such a good movie and its hard to pack a real stories woth real lifes into a 2h movie.
My long-time soldiers and Special Operators believe that when it is your time to die it will happen on your knees behind armor or on your feet in battle regardless of what you do or want so they get desensitized to fear and walk around like the LT. Colonel and Delta Operators.
Y’all should take a look at some of Robin Williams classics. Unfortunately, his best work (in my opinion) you probably wouldn’t like but some that might be ok for you would be ones like: “ Good Will Hunting,” “Good Morning, Vietnam,” and “Dead Poets Society.” Although, they also may have touchy subjects for you as I don’t remember every moment of them.
The US military made our grenades the same weight as a baseball which every American grew up throwing all the time so they can throw them accurately and far
The US and Israel were selling weapons to that country prior to that, US doesn't help anyone, it does what's best in its interest and what serves the elites, How old are you? Do you seriously take movies as a reference?
Fun fact: This was the first movie theater I passed out in. I have a strong Veso Vegal ("vay-zoh vay-gle") response when it comes to movie gore, specifically the "slow stuff" where you hear and see things. I passed out in the chair and woke up after the choppers with night-vision came in.
Don't forget they didn't pack extra Ammo, H2O, MRE'S, BODY ARMOR AND TWO BIRDS (BLACKHAWKS) DOWN IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES OF THE EXTRACTION WAS PRETTY BRUTAL FOR ANY ARMY.
When you said they could shoot him that wasn’t the purpose the purpose was to show you how much in the US military you trust the man in your team the man to your left a man to your right he wasn’t worried walking towards the target because the men shooting at the other targets are not only so accurate They would never hurt a man on their team even by mistake that’s all well trained they are.

You're nice boys, I like you but you don't understand warriors.
Is this an extended cut, or director’s cut? There are some scenes I don’t recognize, and I’ve seen this movie about 5 times
This was a humanitarian mission that got caught in the middle of A civil war
A famine and civil war broke out In Somalia in 1992 after a drought and the Communist government falling when the Soviet union fell and no longer propped up the Somalian communist party with funding.
Unless you saw it first hand or had a friend there that saw what actually happened bro, don’t believe what you hear/see on the news man
'Humanitarian mission'... BUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
@@gogadgetgo3125 u guys always act like u know better, tell me if it was not that then was what it?
True facts
Honestly you can say alot about our military and were we intervene, but dammit Somalia was one of the times we truly wanted to help but failed to do so
@@texastea.2734 How did it fail? They captured the main guy.
Colonization doesn't have anything to do with this story
Doesn't matter, as long as it fits the narative......
@philmakris That's why no one brought it up...except you.
Horrible how people get a simple concept they agree with!
RIP Tom Sizemore.
according to Air Force Combat Controller Dan Schilling, who sat behind McKnight in the Humvee and coordinated movements of the convoy with the Command and Control helicopter as well as air support, McKnight did not return to the battlefield as part of the rescue convoy. He had been shot twice and was pulled from the fight. A Major named Nixon took his place in the Humvee when the rescue column went to the port to link up with the Pakistani and Malaysian soldiers.
This story is the reason why America didn't want to go to Rwanda during that genocide.
Keep in mind that Somalia has no oil reserves.
Especially in comparison to resources in the rest of the continent. Somalia would be one of the last places the U.S. would zero in on.
@EyeseeUriP I think that's the point of his comment lol.
@EyeseeUriP Your point is irrelevant. Shut your damn hole.
Yeah, and the streets alone is a battleground.
Hooyadaa anaa waso iyo UN BA
You need to research this conflict. You have no idea what you're talking about.
If you read what it told you at the beginning and end. That explains the movie
The US didn’t then and does not now want colonies in Africa. This was about trying to help folks in a failed state.
@EyeseeUriP read a little. It’ll do wonders.
@EyeseeUriP look up the Battle of Mogadishu. Then read "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War" by Mark Bowden.
Then if you want you can read some the of the news articles out there.
One of them is Washington Post article titled, "SGT. GORDON'S LAST RESCUE." Another is LA Times article titled: "Dead Soldier Dragged Through Somali Streets a Modern-Day Unknown : Mogadishu: Pentagon says naming the mob’s victim serves no purpose and would only pain those who loved and lost him."
Plenty out there.
@EyeseeUriP you're a clown. Africa is France's playground to Colonize, not the US
@EyeseeUriP We had a chance to colonize Africa and opted not to do so. Shut your hole, Hamas.
@EyeseeUriP Ready anything that isn't communist or muslim propaganda for starters. You're too ignorant to argue the point. You know nothing about any of the conflicts.
This was not a war of conquest, it was to aid civilians with the famine.

Had we gotten involved, decades later you'd get people claiming that America attempted to colonize or imperialize Rwanda.
Of course it was China. Yet they claim to be such a good nation even though they screw over their own citizens, use slave and child labor.

I didn't, going to look into it now.
Reminds me of an expression "haus prestasi" literally thirsty to claim some, any achievement
The army of reets that won't shut up about it make it hard to believe it was ever "little known"
29 countries were part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Somalia
There were several thousand peacekeepers in Mogadishu alone, but they were spread out at many places. Aidid's forces alone outnumbered them, but because the main bases were reasonably well protected, and for political reasons, Aidid had not yet tried to overrun them.
The Somalis would often desecrate the corpses of fallen coalition forces.
@@jaytm6719 Basically the entire world hates us - it's why I will never understand why we continue tosend them billions..
My Unit was deployed to Somalia 1 week before I got out of the military. I often wondered how many of them were represented in this movie. I could probably look up some files and see but something tells me to not go there.
I watch you guys all the time... I love you two. You always make me smile.

With that said....
300,000 Thousand People Killed...Children, Women and Men Killed.
Famine. Civil War.
You think Americans bully and colonize by risking their lives to feed the children, women & men who are starving to death. (?)
You even discussed if you would fight for their brothers/ comrades. If you would "go back". (?)
The innocent people dying and starving to death can only hope that you would.
Eric Bana also does a great job portraying Hector in the movie Troy
@Aurelius556 Munich never gets enough love as a movie.
Eric Bana generally just does a great job as an actor
i get the feeling America is not always represented well by others
That's democrats and liberals for you
yeah, that really screwed the U.S.
They were there doing missions to help feed the people and the local militia didn’t want them feeding the people they wanted them weak
Did two tours in Iraq in 2005 and 2008. Looking back now, we had no reason to go. I did make life long friends however, both soldiers and Iraqis alike. Thanks for the video guys
I agree
There is a part in the (-1:11:51) command pre mission brief that the General mentions how their plan called for further assets (armored vehicles, tanks, AC-130 gunship support...) but higher up command denied the request, hence they ended up in a cluster-f**k without the enough of the right tools to solve all the new problems.
No. It’s not for money.
The older guys who seem cocky? That is Delta force. The most elite, special force in the United States military. They make navy seals look like wimps.
You can laugh about the politicians. You can laugh about the warlords. Don't laugh about the soldiers. He was on point about "why". They fight to preserve their lives and the lives of the men with them, all at the same time while trying to accomplish the mission they have been given. Just don't laugh about that.
I know 😢😢😢
I cried watching this the first time.😢
Filmed in Morocco same as Kingdom.of heaven as it's the same director, Ridley Scott and most of the same production crew
I am amazing that you two do not have more understanding. Regardless nice videos.
The small helicopters are known as "Little Birds" and/or "Angry Birds"
Yeah, the MH-6 Little Bird is a light recon/transport helicopter, and the AH-6 is an attack variant of the MH-6 which is technically still a Little Bird, but because of its effectiveness & incredible firepower earned the Angry Bird nickname.
Somebody else probably mentioned it by now, but the man who was taken hostage was eventually released. It was covered in the end credits.
"Let's go Guantanamo " LMFAO 🤣
During the Cold War, the Soviets would give any group that claimed to be Marxists a couple of truckloads of AK's and ammunition. Over 70 million AK's have been made. Now, in sub-Saharan Africa, an old or used AK can be purchased for $50 US dollars.
You're killing it with the movie picks lately, I just gotta find the time to watch the reactions!
They risk 50 lives to save one life on the helicopter
It helps the morale of everyone if you're confident you won't be left to die alone for the most part. Emphasis on " for the most part".
The Black soldier was actually Puerto Rican. The Somalis would have recognized him as not Somali immediately.
These guys str8 up racist
These guys are straight up racist
Fun fact: there is not a single Somali actor in this film and it was shot in Morocco 💀
Delta and 160th own the night in any battle
The united states often intercept ships that fly no flags that were ported in Iran, just recently one was seized,
upon removing the flooring they found a large cache of about 10,000 AK47's, as well as rockets, and grenade launchers.
The U.S. allowed the people to leave on life boats, (knowing most were doing it to earn some money
for their families to have food), THE u.s. then sink the shipS and cargo.
Mogadishu, Somalia (borders the Indian ocean, thus the Somalia Pirates) the nation is in a power vaccum,
it's not entirely it's government at fault, but paramilitary elements funded by Iran.
As soon humanitarian aid is attempted to be brought in, the various factions attack, and or kill off it's non violent
parts of society, and battle one another to gain stocks of aid, as recent as April, 2024.
This has lead to a backing off of any aid, because of the dangers in having no real centralized governmental control.
Iran has achieved it's goal, and if it had it's way it will soon start to attempt to spread it's influence across Africa.
Their objective is not to claim ownership, but to cause chaos, no central organized government, will result in the ability of
Iran to have free roam across the middle east, and Africa.
As no one would be able to negotiate any sort of agreement with nations attempting to qualm the fighting, and starvation
of the peoples.
Sad that this is based on a true story. Especially the 2 who to who saved the pilot
Sadly, Somalia hasn't become a better place to live in the 3 decades since this movie was made.
Nothing like bold-faced lies in UA-cam comments that can fly completely under the radar.
27:10 if the humvees are up armoured.. (and they would be in this situation)
They are highly bullet resistent.. not bullet proof.. like a tank is
Hard movie to watch 🥹
The guy saying dont go with out me was dieing. The major knew it.
One of these guys was saying he wouldn't go back for a fallen brother....stunned
You don't know much about these two do you? They will understand us, and that's why they are watching American movies and videos about America. They are engineers seeking to become US citizens and work. They have come a long way since they first started. Give them time.
Die for your country in a completely different country. Makes sense.
These dudes are cool, relax. It's fair to think the US doesn't need to be the world police.
YT deletes my comments. These dudes are cool, it's fair to think the US doesn't need to be the world police
You ask some good questions & a great reaction.
Watch the fallen of WW2.
we appreciate that
Instead of "we'll be okay" I'd be telling them, "Bring as much ammo as you can carry, and more water and tourniquets than you think you'll need."
Greetings, guys, from Romania.
38:12 lol whered you learn that distinction? Gta 5?
I ask cause thats how i knew its a "blackbird"
One of the best for sure . Up there with Gladiator as the top 2
Urban warefare is the worst. Too many places enemies can hide in.
The US military made our grenades the same weight as a baseball which every American grew up throwing all the time so they can throw them accurately and far
49:00 the US were trying to help their country to stop genocide among their people. They were not trying to colonize
300,000 starvations is a war crime like Gaza? How many people would do you think you're starving in Gaza?
Don't forget they didn't pack extra Ammo, H2O, MRE'S, BODY ARMOR AND TWO BIRDS (BLACKHAWKS) DOWN IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES OF THE EXTRACTION WAS PRETTY BRUTAL FOR ANY ARMY.
Him not going would have been court martial later. But the leader did not want on on the mission if he would not go with free will.
This was fun. I would like to say, the grenade throw is believable if you know these people. - US Paratrooper
