The Day We Tried to Close Norway's Most Famous Road
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- Countries such as Italy, Switzerland and France all have car-free days. It's a day when a famous road is only available to non-motorised forms of travel. Hundreds and even thousands of people join and experience the beauty of the natural world around them without the roar of engines. It is quite astonishing that Norway, with so many famous mountain roads, doesn't have a day like this. It was time to change that!

I really hope this becomes an annual event on a closed road and eventually a Norwegian tradition. Yet again, another great video. Thanks!
Thanks, James!
I rode my bike to Trollstige this year, during my bikepack trip through Sweden and Norway. I got up early in the morning to avoid the traffic. It was an excellent decision.
That's the smart way to ride it!
Matthew, we need a public email address of the local authority and we should ALL send emails asking when the 2024 bike day will be. We must flood them with this question 👊🏼
Once the fire begins to catch… the wind will blow it higher !
Good luck from the Netherlands. We’ll be there if it happens.
Goosebumps, tears in my eyes. What a wonderful video from this fantastic event. I came home thrilled at having participated. Now I get to relive the experience through your great video work. Thank you
For en dag! Dag!
It was a fantastic day Matthew. Thanks for organising. Loved every minute and every meter climbed and decended. Love the film.
Glad you enjoyed it Graeme!
Great job. If you keep doing this every year im sure the event will grow and some day your dream will come true. Respect.
Incredible, beautiful, moving. World-class footage, Matthew! May the little seed grow in all the right directions, you deserve it.
Thanks you!
Thanks that you make happend this event.I wish I had known about this than I want to be there. I live in Sykkylven 100 km away from Andalsnes..I hope and wish this event can happend again 👍
It will happen next year, follow us on social media or sign up to our newsletter for updates (see description box).
Thank you for answering!😊@@matthewnorway
Imagine - being one of the 40 that were a part of this amazing event and to top it off to be able to have it documented in such a professional way through this episode.
Great initiative! Indeed your videos were the key motivation for my Norway trip in Summer 2023. I'm feeling the urge to come back to Norway for riding Trollstigen in 2024!
I hope you do!
Thank you so much, Matthew. Fabulous idea, and an excellent video, as usual.
👍
Come on Tourist board! Get a day locked in just for bikes and I'll book my flights from the UK and bring my mates.
Or he made the mistake not to use it as a challenge in sports like Lysebotn opp😁
Lovin Norway, lovin your work, Matthew👍❤
A superb video; even the music is great! BRAVO!
thanks!
Wow 🤩 what an event, congrats to all of the participants, that is something they and you will never forget. And yes, we want more of this so I am with you for closing Trollstigen at least for a morning or so, I mean that is not unusual for a bike event in other parts of the world so why not in Norway, I think it will be a great event and shows the sportmannship for which Norway is so famous.
Well said!
I did get the shit scared out of me on that damm road, I'd do again though. ❤
When I spotted the e-bike I started wondering if I……. Who knows?! It was amazingly filmed. Very inspiring, Matthew. Even just watching it from a legs-up-on-sofa position😅
Loved this film, love the event, love to be part of it next year. It is in my diary to hit you up at the beginning of next summer and get an invitation in 2024. Well done Matthew!
What an event, mind blowing and all thanks to you and your vision and determination.
The gods clearly wanted you to host the event as they rewarded with the weather.
Dinner in the mountains, perfect way to end ..... i salute you.
👍
"The End." 🤣
Great initiative, spectacular scenery, again. 😎👍
Norway is lucky to have someone like you in our country. Thanks! I am sure you will succeed.
Absolutely magical what a beautiful video thank you
thanks for watching!
Oh my troll! So nice
American Flyers music! So good - great video mate
Absolutely love it! 👍
Well Matthew, that was indeed a well planted seed. We won’t be able to make it for 2024 but we sure will one day soon. Keep it watered and let’s watch it grow 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the support, I think we'll have over 100 join next year!
Fantastic. Wish i could joined.
Shared this to my step-dad yesterday as he's an avid biker here in Norway. Today the reply was just "Can you find out when Trollstigen Day 2024 is?"
So, good job mister!
Wow to bad i missed out on this event. I hope there is one next Year. Where do you announce events like this?
See the description box for details.
Another stunner! Thanks for taking this initiative Matthew and for making it happen! This will for sure be an even bigger success next year. I have no doubt!
Thanks Hans, Look forward to next year!
Que hermoso ! I'm definitely in for the 2024 event !!
Definitely on my options list for 2024....Thanks for the beautiful video, the mountains really are magnificent :D
👍
Hope to join next year. People should join in the thousands! Best wishes for this fabulous initiative.
Just amazing!
Stunning scenery and fantastic event, well done and congratulations to all who rode. Thank you.
Amazing place, nice trip I like it 😊
Matthew, what a wonderful video mate! Every great event is pioneered by someone taking that first step, congratulations fella and believe me this will snowball I’m sure of it, I hope one day to join you- keep up the great work x
I live in Oslo, so I am up for joining next year.
A fantastic idea. And wow what looks the Trollstigen fantastic with the autumn colours.
Last time that I was there in 2022 there was an event for walking uphill, but you could also drive by car there at that moment. But I think when you put an sign (with a time schedule) at the top and at the bottom you would have even less people that will drive there at that moment.
Great video with stunning landscape, especially in autumn! I cycled Trollstigen this year while summer holiday - it was great!
May your fantastic idea grow and the dream of an entire cycling day at Trollstigen come true, Matthew!
Thanks, Markus!
Respect!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Well done Matthew
That looks amazing and I genuinely hope it grows and grows. Well done Matthew :)
Wow😮
Gratulerer Matt
Congratulations on organising what appeared to be such a fantastic day, I regret that it would be a bit much for me but I do hope that you are successful in persuading the Norwegian government to close the road for the day at some time in the future. Well done.
Many thanks!
trollstigen was one of the best roads ive ever biked at. But it was not much traffic in September. Thank you so much.
Wonderful 🚴 I hope this become a yearly event. I will be at startline next year 🌲
Stunning!!! Hope this will grow into a regular yearly event!!! Let us know the date in advance, maybe we could join from abroad too... :)
Information about 2024 will be posted on our website and social media channels later this year (see description box).
Beautiful as always. Love the format!
This is such a great storytelling Matthew and I really enjoyed both your video and the event! Like many comments here I vote for a yearly event! Next time I should be the one on roller skies😉 Loved it!
Bring them roller skies it will look good on camera. 😉
Amazing! I will try to ride that road next year.
Very nice video! And wonderful nature 😮😊
Many thanks
Matthew please don't stop dreaming and keep trying to make it happen. The route is just amazing and your video has brought back many wonderful memories of my bikepacking trip. Trollstigen is definitely a must see when cycling in Norway.
Thanks for all your efforts.
Thank you! Will do!
@@matthewnorway We discussed this yesterday and the first questions were: "How do you get the information about the event and will we go to Norway next year when it takes place again". The answer to the second question was "Yes".
So please make an official announcement if there is a repeat and also mountain bike riders are allowed 😁

Niiice, just nice. Thanks!
Norway is one of my favorite places to enjoy the wild outdoors and I’ve yet to cycle it. Would 100% visit for this experience. Brilliant video, as always. Congrats on the inaugural ride.
An excellent initiative Matthew. Put out the date for 2024 and I'll do my best to come. I've only got to travel from Sweden.
The 2024 event info will be posted on our social media channels and website. See the description box for details.
This stuff just makes you smile, job well done!
Amazing
I have chills every time, such amazing videos!!
Awesome video, great initiative👍👍👍. I hope to ride it one day. Succes with this project, 🤞👍👍
Many thanks!
epic! may it grow, and i’ll be there from across the big pond. amazing soundtrack as always.
Fabulous idea and video Matthew - well done! Assuming I'm based back in Norway again next summer you can sign me up for the 2024 event 🙂
Great Matthew. :)
I hope this will grow into something big :) Maybe start and stop in Åndalsnes?
As you can see my surname are from Valldal :)
What an amazing ride and road. I am adding this one to my bucket list. I wouldn't feel right committing to a group ride because I always bring terrible weather with me!
I’m a local Sunnmøre cyclist who also didn’t get an invite to this ride, but for sure I’d sign up for one if it’s possible next year. So many sportives cancelled over the last few years for one reason or another, so I for one would welcome something like this.
More than welcome to join. Information will be posted on our website and social media channels later this year.
Mathew I am sitting in my truck with a smile as wide as Norway this video was up there with possibly you’re best video you have produced mate that was sensational from start to finish chapeau 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🏴🏴🏴🇳🇴🇳🇴🚴🏻♂️🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🏴🏴 🇳🇴
I'm delighted you enjoyed it, thank you!
Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
Great idea! I hope you make it happen in 2024 ❤
Wow, that scenery is just amazing! Weather was definitely on your side, i don't think i've seen better shots of Trollstigen
We were very lucky!
What a beautiful location😍 to ride your bike on National car free day🇧🇻 great footage and the organisation was spot on Matthew 👌
Wow!! Can I come next year?? Definitely on this Aussies bucket list!🦘
I summited trollstigen on my bike this summer on my ride from bergen to trondheim and it was inredible. Might have to come back again now
Superb initiative, sad it didn’t happen! I did climb Trollstigen last summer on a regular day, a few buses and cars but not that dangerous or complicated, it would be great to cycle there with no cars. Cheers
Beautiful 😄
❤🙌
Brilliant idea and video! Where can I sign this petition? But only if I can come to participate on my e-bike. 🙂
E-bikes are more than welcome! See the description box for details.
Absolutely stunning scenery would love to do this ride but for me it would have to be traffic free! I really hope you can win the hearts and minds of the norwegian people/goverment and make this an annual event.
this is such a wounderful idea - I bet in 2028 you have the road blocked, the bakery and SPAR in Sylte will have a warm welcome at the half way point organised and places in the restaurant well be fully booked. All the best! And I bought a T-shirt - every penny helps. I hope!
Thanks Matthew, only been home for 6 weeks after 3 amazing months in Norway and already thinking can we get back there for trollstigen 2024? It's a long way from NZ but we're gonna try!!
I am ready to travel up from Denmark to join you next time BUT you have to open up for people (like me) who refuses to bike around in Tour de France outfit and big mirror glasses 😉
It is open to everyone. We had one girl on an e bike and I hope next year more demographics will participate.
I want to join next time!!!!!
I think there is a gradual movement towards the closure of certain roads for motorized traffic happening in Norway. Stalheimskleiva is a prime example. More will probably follow in years to come. But Trollstigen is just too important for tourism and also an important route for getting from A to B. So I dont think a road like that will be permanently closed for motorized vehicles. But if they could refuse access to busses and long caravans, that would already improve things massively!
Awesome. You are certainly doing an incredible job promoting Norway as a cycling destination. Will you repeat the event in 24 ?
Wow ❤
I wish during summer they would close some of these fantastic roads for traffec, I dare not cycle them with all the big busses and campervans squishing you.
❤❤
❤
its not Sylte, but Valldal population is about 1000
I would absolutely travel from Sweden to take part in an event on Trollstigen - and would spread the word to other Swedish cyclists.
I didn't get my invitation for TS 1.0 but I am 50 years old in 2024. So I'm hoping I get an invite to TS 2.0 2024?
Information about 2024 will be posted on our website and social media channels later this year (see description box).
Also turning 50 in 2024, will make an effort to fit "TS2024" in my calendar as well :D
Next yeat, I'm there 🚵♂️
awesome!
@@matthewnorway ridden it once before, bikepacking during covid so no busses and and very few cars. The Stelvio day footage looks amazing, even a fraction of that in Trollstigen would be awesome.
Looks like the scenery can be appreciated longer and better while biking opposed to driving.
Annual, then monthly, weekly, daily....-)
It would be great to be an annual event. 2024? Life is uncertain, but with fitness, finances, and timing, it would be a great trip.
I cycled Trollstigen many years ago. Well, mostly pushed the bike up all 11Km... In my defence, I had nearly 20Kg of luggage strapped onto it...
The descent into Valldal was 'a bit faster' and much more enjoyable. ;-)
After Valldal(camped there overnight) I set course for Sjøholt and over the Ørskogfjellet, down to Vestnes and ferry back to Molde.
Using the tramline to get up on NesAksla is cheating. There's a perfectly good footpath up there...
All e-bikes are welcome the more the merrier! Information about 2024 will be posted on our website and social media channels later this year (see description box).
Great idea, Matthew😃 Lysebottn opp for cyclist, maybe you should contact the Norweagian pros, who cycle F
Tour de France or make ie an 'Arctic Race'event for the South😀 The Arctic Race started small as well in Andøya😃
Sorry, I meant Artic Race.
Where was this announced??? I would joined if I heard anything about it..
I rode this climb from Valldal in poring rain in July, like 1" deep river uphill. And couldn't see anything of the view.
Information about 2024 will be posted on our website and social media channels later this year (see description box).
