I had to work long hours and the pay was terrible, so I only work on cars as a hobby now. I figured out all the fabrication and welding myself. It's easy to weld - just buy a welder and watch some UA-cam videos. The rest is practice. Soldering is easy too.
The Tinder Chick shot was the funniest thing I've heard in weeks. This is crazy! Definitely gunna follow and keep up with some of these videos for when I get my rav 4 in a month.
I just installed a 10.1" scteen Joying Android head unit in my 99 RAV4 4 door and I was AMAZED that it FITS PERFECTLY!!! IT literally looks like it cake stock that way! If anyone is considering replacing their stereo in a 1st Gen Rav4 I HIGHLY recommend getting one! I spent $250 for this thing, and it's got an Intel processor, 4x50 amp and sounds DAMN GOOD! I thought that I would have to immediately add an amplifier, but as it turns out the thing is powerful and sounds great as is. I'm still going to get an amplifier to run my sub and the rear speakers, and once that occurs this system will be amazing. I gotta say, I've been skeptical about the Android head units from the beginning as they were plagued by a lack of decent processing power as well as a lack of decent amplification, but those issues have been fully addressed now (at least by Joying), so these Chinese units have officially SURPASSED the big boys like Alpine, Kenwood etc. A decent Kenwood will run about $500...TWICE the price of the Joying, yet the Joying has tons of features the big boys do NOT... Like the ability to run any Android app, totally customize the look of the screen, etc. It's a NO BRAINER!

Messy aftermarket stereos are actually one of the best red flags for not buying a used car. My car had the messy stereo, and was poorly maintained. Those two things always come together.

I think that did the most in actually quieting my 98 4runner when I added it with butyl and closed cell foam. It adds a ton of weight though
Good installation, sounds fairly decent , to help you with your most annoying part as you call it, to remove the window winder handle next time!! you simply use a screwdriver and push the metal clip and pull the handle off(there's no need to hook it at all) this way the clip also stays on the handle too and it won't fly off as you remove the handle. If you look at the design of the handle and the clip you will see this is how it was designed to be released and removed .. Best Regards, keep up the vids. Great job..

More power to the speakers is always better! My radio puts out 22 watts x 4 speakers. That's not much at all. You can add an amplifier and the speakers can get 50 watts x 4.
Is it normal for the "yellow wire" (constant 12v) to read 0 Volts on the voltmeter even if the engine is running? I've checked the fuse (Dome fuse) under the hood and its all good. I have a rav4 1998
So happy you did this video, I was gonna replace my speakers too, but now I know my speaker sizes may be different. Mine is the same as yours but the 4 door model. Manual and crank windows. Maybe the four door model has 6.5 inch speakers?
The easy way to tell would be to shine a flashlight at the front door panels. If the speaker grill holes aren't all drilled out, you probably have the smaller speakers. It's still a good idea to take the panels off and actually look at your speakers before ordering.
I noticed that you said that there were wires for hooking up steering wheel controls to the radio. Did I misunderstand that or does that mean I could get a new steering wheel with radio controls and be able to use that?
The radio is compatible with a steering wheel interface input. If you got a steering wheel that had buttons on it, along with the clock spring wiring, you could add steering wheel buttons. Great video as I'm about to see what's up with my radio. Dang thing powers off once I put the Rav4 in gear. Forward or reverse. Then comes back on by itself... Radio issue or something else? Also cigarette lighter has no power. Thoughts?
That's weird. Start by checking the cigarette lighter and radio fuses. Next, pull out the radio and check the wiring. Do you have the factory radio plugged into the factory connector, or is there aftermarket stuff with poorly connected wires?

Depending on the depth of your new speakers, they might fit in the doors if you just cut the holes bigger. If your speakers have a large magnet, you may have to build a spacer.
I bought the same ones you installed for the rear in your rav4. So, the plan is to have 6.5’s all the way around. I just couldn’t seem to find a mounting bracket. My plan is to drill holes (where they are supposed to be)out the stock speaker grill.

I thought I was upgrading from my 1996 Camry that didn't have A/C. I knew the RAV4 had some rust, but I had no idea how bad the car really was. At least now we all have these videos!
Hi I have a question I have a 1998 rav4 and can't find a good place to run a positive wire to the battery for a amp and was wondering if you had any ideas
Remove the battery and battery tray. You'll see the engine wiring harness passing through the firewall. Pull the wiring harness and grommet out of the hole just a few inches. Poke a hole through the rubber grommet with a screwdriver. Don't use a drill. Be careful not to cut into any of the wires. Push your power wire through the grommet, and push the grommet and engine wiring back in to the firewall.
That's a fun question. I originally paid $3,500 for it 2 years ago, which is too much. But people in Utah pay too much for all wheel drive Toyotas. I could get my $3,500 back any time selling it. Then I started fixing it. That's when things went horribly wrong. EVERYTHING on my RAV4 was completely ruined. I've spent more than $8,000 in parts and way more than that in labor, which I did myself, for free, so I guess it doesn't count. At this point, I've given so much to my RAV4, and it's given me almost nothing in return. I ride a scooter to work because my car sucks so much. I actually kind of hate my RAV4. My RAV4 could probably beat almost any other vehicle off road, with it's super short wheelbase, awesome tires, and 12 inches of ground clearance. As a car, it's much worse than newer vehicles. It gets bad gas mileage, it's probably the slowest car on the road, and if you crash it, you'll definitely end up in a wheelchair. At this point I'm not ready to sell it yet, because I want to finish my video series, or at least find a good stopping point where I've done most of the common repairs. Then I'll get rid of it for cheap since it's not actually worth anything.

@@51cathedral51 My RAV4 gets 21mpg, which is the right gas mileage for this vehicle. It actually runs perfectly, but it still leaks every fluid except for brake fluid. My coolant still disappears pretty quickly, but it's been hard to find. I still need to change the timing belt and water pump, and I'm hoping that will stop the coolant leak. It's leaking transmission fluid, but I have new axle seals, and I plan on fixing that soon. The #2 exhaust valve oil seal is bad, but that's not a big deal. I would just replace the cylinder head to freshen up the engine, but I don't want to spend much more money on it. Of course it leaks oil and power steering fluid too, but not enough to have to add oil.
@@LabCoatPaul I do have an odd question All my Camrys (I've had 5) are revving at 2400~2500 @70mph, but they're auto trans I have a 1999 4 door Rav 5 speed like yours and its at 3200~3400 @ 70mph. Is this normal?

I installed the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A K02 tires in the LT225/75R16 size.

Youll get the best sound quality wirh a good quality 4 channel amp matched to the rms of your speakers.

The wiring on the featured radio does not match the wiring in my 97 rav4 factory radio.

I have a 1999 4 door Rav 5 speed like yours and its at 3200~3400 @ 70mph. Is this normal?
@@devinprasad3449 Yes. The Camry has a higher highway gear than the RAV4. The Camry also has a bigger and more powerful engine than the RAV4.

How much would it cost to pay someone to do all of this?
When I used to do car stereo, I would charge $40 labor to install a radio, and $100 to replace 4 speakers. Building anything custom would be extra.
Just think of all much weight you got out of your RAV4 with all that radio stuff you probably get better gas mileage now
