@@The_Infamous_BoogymanTrue, but it was also quite obvious that there were just some things Fox couldn't address, like Wade's admiration for Captain America and the Avengers. And with the very premise of the film, a lot of that aspects of admiration was also directed towards Logan (even if he does go so far as to desecrate his corpse).

The car scene between Logan and Wade in particular was amazing for this. Nevermind the fact that the fight was fucking insane, but just the dialogue and Hugh's performance. Also love the fact that they didn't have Wade take his mask off, just held on his speechless expression for a bit. Their dynamic was sooo well done, both the comedy and bits of drama & bonding.

I think the insecurity was ALWAYS there, sometimes on the surface and sometimes subtextually.
In the first movie, we hear about his childhood. We see how many times he cannot stop fucking up, even when it's detrimental to him. We see how stubborn he is about teaming up with anybody.
And the thing about his appearance in the first movie wasn't just a blurb. It's a major turning point in the story. And it's also a representation of his self-esteem. The FACT that he thinks Vanessa won't be able to get past his appearance is just another way of saying "maybe she thought my good looks were the only thing she liked about me".
And it isn't just something that nags him throughout the movie either. He LEAVES her because of it.
So yeah. Saying "Deadpool's insecurity isn't really presented" is woefully disingenuous.
I'd even argue that Wolverine takes the place of Captain America in the first movie. It's not just a nod and a wink to the camera. He has a kind of reverence for the guy.

I think this version of Deadpool is very much like the Maguire Spider-Man, which is to say unfaithful, but in a way that condenses the journey of the character for the sake of run-time.
The Spider-Man of the Maguire films was the fully developed version of the character that the modern audience was familiar with as the pure essence of the character. It's arguably true that the journey of the comic book version made that essence more meaningful, because we see just how much he's grown, but it would take a dozen movies to see that journey and the point is to start right away with someone the audience will like.
As someone whose main exposure to Deadpool before the movie (aside from a collection of cameos) was the 2013 Deadpool game, I saw him as a morally dubious D-lister who frequently bothered the X-Men. And yeah, they nailed that. I think there's a reason why the video game adaptation was so close in characterization to the movie, and why fans seem to like the both of them so much. This is the character's essence, distilled down to a digestible size.
I think the original Spider-Man trilogy was one of the best adapted superhero series and I don't care that it's not faithful to the comics. And that's how I feel about Deadpool too. If the writers know what they're doing, then vibes are all that matter.

I try not to put too much emotional investment into the character evolution of Earth 616 comic characters. A prime example is Otto Octavius. When Otto takes over Spider-Man’s body Peter tries and fails to get it back while stuck in Otto’s dying body. He dies but he manages to give Otto his memories, which isn’t enough for Otto to give the body back and accept death, but it is enough for him to legitimately try and be a Superhero, with mixed results. Eventually he realises he’s outmatched against Norman Osborn and willingly gives the body back to Peter in a selfless act of sacrifice.
Eventually in true 616 fashion he comes back; not as Doctor Octupus but he’s able to inhabit a clone made from both Peter and his Original body, moves to the West Coast and becomes their Spider-Man, also with mixed results but a great look at Otto’s character development…until he goes up against an alternate version of Osborn with Spider powers that he can’t beat. This time he ends up making a deal with Mephisto and getting his original body back, losing Peter’s memories but gaining the ability to outwit Osborn, but undoing most of his character development as he walks away from the life and friends he’d made.
Then at the end of the recent third Superior Spider-Man run he loses ALL of his memories related to everything I just said, finally reverting him back to square one.

    • @alekmako
      @alekmako 2 місяці тому +61

Weirdly enough out of all the character development regressions we've had throughout 616 this is one that stung particularly bad as I read it. Maybe because it finally took seriously the internal world of a character I thought they'd never touch with any depth?
In any case I definitely agree with your sentiment, Marvel and DC comics benefit greatly from being read as modern folk tales that are continually reinterpreted and can't be trusted to be internally consistent for more than a few years at a time.

Damn, that's a shame. Marvel, in general, always felt like a universe that moved on in small ways. Like Peter hasn't really been the angst teenager for a while - that's Miles now. The world slowly changes and that was nice. So to have a character be reset like that sucks. I don't think many of Marvel's character resets ever went over well. I mean, sure, Ock becoming a good guy removes his role as a classic super-villain... byut that's okay! It's a fictional world - we can make new characters! It would also mean new kinda of stories. Ock and Peter teaming up and showing off their different takes on Spider-man would be really interesting. The continual development of their relationship. Ock's relationship with other super villains. And so on.

@PhotonBeast Unfortunately, editorial at Marvel seems hellbent on making sure that Peter's world never evolves beyond the status quo that was set during the 70s. I agree with your thesis. There's this constant demand that a comics character adapt The Comics Version that doesn't understand that there isn't one singular Comics Version. You have to take what you think is the essence of the character from all their history, and in the process of doing that you just create one more version, with some essential traits and some new qualities, that is then part of what the next person to use the character gets to draw from. But now you have comics writers treating the movie version as The Version of the character, and anything not included in that version is secondary apocrypha that gets cut away.
I also think it's sad that Marvel has few to no actual antiheroes, like your on-a-downswing Deadpool periods. Troubled heroes, sure. Lethal and sadistic heroes, definitely. But actual more-harm-than-good Problem Causers? John Walker and the Scarlet Witch is all I can come up with.

The reason for fox movie deadpool only highlighting select amounts of things and not have all the fluctuations in his character is the industry itself. You never know if they'll make another movie with this character or have him ever show up again, so the stories need to have an ending that can be the end of the whole story. If he gets put into the mcu, then he can go on a multi movie character arc that takes 4 years worth of appearances to finish.

It’s somewhat a result of the general way that Wade’s pansexuality has been handled in the comics, as in it’s a lot of jokes about him being attracted to other men and the general homoeroticism of the genre, which makes it a bunch of queer-baiting bs.
The one time it wasn’t a joke was with that non-binary Vietnamese assassin Valentine Vuong, a character created by non-binary Asian American comic writer Alyssa Wong, who despite the lies told by ComicsGate weirdos didn’t ruin Iron Fist when they helped to introduce an actual Asian holder of the title, didn’t cheer when Stan Lee died, and isn’t a bad writer or creator for making non-binary East Asian characters for both DC and Marvel, moving back to the point of Valentine being the first time it wasn’t a gay joke or queer bait, the pair’s relationship is fine at the end of Alyssa’s run, only for Marvel Editorial and Alyssa’s replacement to immediately terminate the relationship off-panel, (but at least they didn’t try to pretend Valentine never existed.) It’s annoyingly obvious they just want to continue making Spideypool jokes, CablePool jokes, and WolverinePool jokes, thus the constant queer baiting of Deadpool resumes with its typical vaguely homophobic undertone, Spideypool, CablePool and WolverinePool is just typical of Marvel

It feels almost like "Deadpool and Wolverine" was created in response to this video-it touches on so many of the more fundamental themes with him. He's grown from being just "Fox Deadpool" to being _Deadpool._ He's changed, become a better person, we see more dimensions to him.
Heck, even the fourth wall breaks are done in a much better fashion; they're less "OMG random" and more... I dunno.
Having Wolverine to play off of was exactly what the character needed.

I think you're right about iteration and superheroes. It's nice to see new versions of them.
In film, Batman occurred to me when you mentioned the idea. Do we want Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight or Joel Schumacher's rubber daddy? Both! Nolan's films had a lot of interesting internal conflict but Schumacher gave us a Batman who genuinely wanted the role and that was interesting in a whole different way (and he managed to get a rubber bar Batman costume with nipples on approved for mainstream film, which is quite impressive).

I read alot of the Deadpool comics prior to the first films release and i really love the darkest aspects of him as a Character. I hate how every hero treats him like complete shit for the most part, but there are some like Cable, Wolverine and even Cap who can see he isnt just a joke. When he is horribld to his friends (especially Blind Al) it can make you really hate him but in the end he has usually done more good than bad.

Correction for 23:16, Ryan never said he was done with Deadpool. In that 2022 interview, he said he was doing "nothing BUT Deadpool for the next 2 years" (2022 - 2024). You got clickbaited a bit there.
Anyway, after DP & Wolverine; I think this version really works, and can continue to work if DP gets to interact with more of the Marvel universe down the line. His dynamic with Logan, while hilarious and enjoyable to watch, is also genuinely sweet and you can feel a reverence grow between them as the movie goes on.
I don't think we'll see a lot of the oscillation you talked about going forward, but I feel like there's an open door for Wade to have really interesting interactions with a lot of the cast. It's just a shame he won't get to meet the OG Steve from pre-Endgame. Would've loved to see that meeting.

I'd like to see the more bad side of Deadpool, he was an assassin trying to kill X-Force in the 90s, he fought Wolverine a lot as another Sabertooth-like nemesis. The first movie hints he was a hired gun before getting his powers, but the films have him fight along C-tier X-Men only he isn't as GoodyTwoShoes as Callosus. Same with Venom, he also began as a Spiderman villain, but he's instantly Lethal Protector in the newer films, in a way; Spiderman 3 got Venom more right.

I really like the idea of Deadpool as a palimpsest in this and I think it's a really good way to look at Superhero comics in general. I know a lot of people can fixate on having one pure version of characters but I think the nature of comic characters is to be multifaceted multifaceted and different depending on the story they're in. I remember Gwenpool had a nice discussion of this idea with its treatment of Batroc the Leaper and it's awareness of how that version of Batroc was different to other versions.
On another note, it's just really cool seeing you directly discuss comics. I know you've covered them before for videos like Superman isn't Jesus but it's cool to see a video with such a large focus on a character's comics and I hope you do more of it in the future

  • @eclect

I'd argue it was less that Daniel Way made Deadpool break into the mainstream and more that mainstream culture had finally caught up to Deadpool. In the late 90s DP was a little ahead of his time. 4th wall breaking, profoundly weird content was nothing new to Marvel and DC (Lobo, Howard the Duck, Animal Man, Spider-Ham, Byrne She-Hulk) but it was always fairly niche. It wasn't until the rise of things like Adult Swim and the culture of the Internet that Deadpool was ready to enter the mainstream. Daniel Way just happened to be the main book writer when that happened, alongside a big push from Marvel editorial. The fact that his run is not fondly remembered and none of what he did persisted supports this.

I love the idea of deadpool's character constantly being destroyed and built back up. It thematically parallels with his healing factor, and means that no matter what hell he goes through he has no choice but to get back up. Sure, he can survive being stabbed, shot, and blown to pieces, but he still feels the agonizing pain. Deadpool has never been my favorite character (I tend to agree with gwenpool in that he is a bit too much XD RANDOM) but when done well he is an excellent character. Focusing on the merc, rather than the mouth.

beneath the jokes and fourth wall breaks, there's a tragedy to deadpool. He's done terrible things, he's had terrib;le things done to him, he's suffered everything from cancer to even outright dying, he's been betrayed, more people in-universe hate him than love him, he has VERY few actual friends, and to top it all off thanks to certain revelations he can't even be sure most of his life has even been REAL.
I think what really exemplifies the dichotomy of Deadpool as a character is Deadpool Roasts the Marvel Universe. On the surface its the moost silly, nonsense Deadpool story imaginable, with a very silly start where thanos comes in in a stupid thanos themed helicopter (the thanoscopter) only for deadpool to get his hands on the infinity gems and infinity gauntlet out of nowhere and then uses said gems to force everyone in the marvel universe to attend a roast where deadpool makes fun of EVERYONE and everyone is magically forced to laugh with him. Of course as the characters lose all composure and laugh and laugh Deadpool jsut walks out, gets SERIOUS as he gives his biggest roast to the people he hates most: the audience and the writers. He lays out how much he HATES everything, how awful his life is and he blames them and their endless consumption of his comics forcing him to live a terrible, awful life of suffering for their amusement.
Fortunately Howard the Duck helps him and gives him a peptalk as he assures deadpool he's not alone.
The point is this story really encapsulates the depth of deadpool. He may seem like jsut a font of jokes, but in the right circumstances you can see that beneath it all he's a sad clown who jsut wants a fucking BREAK.
"Heard a joke once. Man goes to a doctor, says he cannot see any hope in the world, can only see darkness and tragedy. Doctor says here's a ticket for the greatest clown in the world, Pagliachi, should pick you right up. Man says, but doctor, I am Pagliachi. Everyobody laugh. Applause. Curtains."
