Don’t toss your KALIMBA or shove it in the closet because your end keys cannot play. Just some tweaks can bring back the sound and you can finish your tune!
Thank you! I’ve started playing songs on the higher notes, which I avoided at first because the tines were so tight and produced a horrible sound. This has been super helpful.
I got the exact same Kalimba that is showcased in this video! So I repeated the same process shown here and it actually helped alot. Thank you so much!
Same. I was so happy to see hers work bc that means that my one should eventually. but my D ••2 , A •6 , C ••1 and E ••3 still don't budge, but I keep trying. Some of the inner ones are getting there. Thank you, Tanya. edit: typo correction
Thank you! I just discovered Kalimbas last week and ordered a hollow and an acrylic. The acrylic came first and is perfect; every tine sounds wonderful. Then the hollow arrived a few days later and it is so much louder and the long tines have a wonderful sound, but the end tines were dead. This is so helpful! Last night I ordered a solid wood kalimba, lol. I am completely obsessed and wanted one of each kind, lol. I even ordered one for my best friend, and she loves hers too. How did I not know these lovely instruments existed before last week? 🤣🤣🤣❤🎼🎶🎵
Excellent! That really helped 3 out of 4 of my tines! 😄🎉 I'll keep fiddling with that last tine and see if it'll cooperate with me eventually. I do love that natural, gentle, music box-like sound. 🎶🥰
This just helped me so much, I didn't know if it would be okay to mess with the tines, but your vid here gave me the confidence to give it a try and it helped so much.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! i just bought a kalimba and was so scared of having dead tines. all the other videos said i should get another one if that happens but yours is the best!!! the most helpful one
THANK YOU SO MUCH I got a kalimba ages ago but left alone because I couldn’t tune these last keys they made no sound and when I tried to tune them it just sounded awful, I got a new kalimba hoping for it to be different but I had the same issue and this fixed it !,!!!!!!
That was awesome. Thanks, Tanya. I had a dead E◦◦ key on the far right but your tip has brought it to life. It's still muted (as you warned it would be) but it produces a lovely tone now. :)
Thank you so much 💜 i bought a rather cheap one as i knew i would not have much time to put into it and i‘m no music talent XD so i just wanted one for if i get the motivation to play. And i got really sad/mad at the bad sounds of the end-notes and this help quite a lot So thank you💜💜💜
Thank you. I got an inexpensive one and was really sad i had quite a few dead tines, it tot slightly better and you explained beautifully. Blessings back
I have the same problem but i'm too scared to give a lift on those end keys as i thought its issues gets worst 😄😄.. This video is 3 years older but still helps.. Thanks you and take care.. 🙏🙏
My new kalimba sounds dead too, I tried what you did in the video. But it doesn't work, Do new kalimbas do this? Will it get the spring the longer I use it?
Thank you for connecting Justin. Yes, most are a bit dead depending on the make. The key is to work the tine , lifting it up enough to not break your keys but gain some spring that creates a sound. Yes, that used tine will gain more sound in the Long run. Hope this was helpful.
No entiendo bien por qué no se inglés, pero, se refiere a cuando la nota apenas suena? Solo tiene que levantar la tecla un poco? Es que siento que se va a romper y es para un regalo, ayuda :(
Hello, I tried your tutorial but its still not working even though I gently and gradually tried to loosen the tines just like in your video. I just got this acrylic kalimba today and waited so long for it to arrive, I feel really bad about these dead tines because I was so excited to play my first song.. I've been struggling to find any youtube tutorial and tried anywhere else on the internet and still no help. I'm about to lose hope, do you have any tips please? 🙁😭
I want you to try to loosen the keys a bit more, not too much, but a little at a time. The goal is to have some space between the time and where it lands ✨️ to create a sound. Do I a few times until there's sound. Don't give up...you're doing great! Work with your instrument. Have a nice day.
Don’t use the hammer yet; first lift up your dead keys again and again until it is less stiff without being too hard...check out my other video as to how to do this without breaking your kalimba. Hope this helps. Don’t be frustrated..keep playing.🎶😀
It's incredible how many people believe that bending metal will make it flexible. Simply a manufacturing flaw, exchange it as soon as you can. Additionally, this is a bad tip.
Do you own a kalimba? You will see that the majority of the less expensive kalimbas are like this. Don't need to toss the kalimba, just a simple adjustment!😊
literally the only video that is clear and straight to the point thank you
Hope it can help you with your sound on your kalimba! Thank you so much!🙂
THANK YOU i couldn't find any solutions anywhere for dead tines, but tried out your suggestion and it helped a whole ton!
Yess, so happy for you!
I just got my kalimba today and the E6 tine was dead. I did what you said and hammered it some and I got the note! Yey!
Fantastic news!
Thank you! I’ve started playing songs on the higher notes, which I avoided at first because the tines were so tight and produced a horrible sound. This has been super helpful.
May this help to give you fuller sound in your kalimba playing!😊
You are the only one who offered a solution that actually works 😊 thank you!
So happy for you; Enjoy your kalimba!
Just got my Kalimba and stuffed around with flat keys for ages. Thanks so much for this video. It sounds perfect now.

It really seems to be a hollow kalimba type of problem?? With flat board kalimbas both wooden and acrylic it doesn't seem to be a recurring issue
just bought one yesterday and i was really confused when my left two weren't ringing, now I can more confidently play higher notes thank you!
This is wonderful Matt. Way to go with better kalimba playing!
Excellent! That really helped 3 out of 4 of my tines! 😄🎉 I'll keep fiddling with that last tine and see if it'll cooperate with me eventually. I do love that natural, gentle, music box-like sound. 🎶🥰

Don’t give up on it…it can still produce sound. Listen to people play simple tunes first and then build on your abilities. All the Best!🎶👏🏾🙂

You're Welcome...hope your playing becomes even sweeter!🙂
i put a piece of wire under mine tines and gave it a slight reverb sound it sounds great with a mic ed kalimba....
i forgot to thank you for the tip! but if you bend the tines it does lose structural integrity ....that is better than no sound huh
txs for the heart!

Does this work for acrylic kalimbas bc i heard that its sometimes because of the body and not the tines
Yes.

sí, solo levántalo un poco
i just order my kalimba dont even know if it will have this problem but i want to know everyting before it gets here

How much should you pay for a decent kalimba?
So you are just bending the metal to be a little softer? I'm gonna try this.
Yes, give it a shot!
i have kalimba and i ill try it tomorow becuse i have problem with death keys
i dont really understand what to do, i tried to use hammer but is still sound really wrong and high,
Don’t use the hammer yet; first lift up your dead keys again and again until it is less stiff without being too hard...check out my other video as to how to do this without breaking your kalimba. Hope this helps. Don’t be frustrated..keep playing.🎶😀
@@TANYAJALBERT Thank you for your help :D ill try that
So I have to lift the tine?
Yes, lift it up a bit but not to break...only to loosen it a bit to give you a better spring to resonate sound.
Hii, I tried that and the two last notes on my kalimba were fixed but my second a and second g are still dead :(
Gently loosen those keys again as much as needed, but a little at a time, to gain a sound, and give it a play each time. Thanks for your comment.
@@TANYAJALBERTthank you so much for reaching out! i will try that you just got a new subscriber :))
@@TANYAJALBERTlast question though, i realized that i actually have no idea how to loosen them do you know how to 😭😭..
Go back in the video and pay careful attention and you'll get it!😊
