Thank you for sharing. Do you have to file two separate forms (State and federal)?

Great question! In most states, you only have to file for federal, but it depends on what state you live in. Here in Arkansas, you only have to file once 👍

I have a question. My brother passed in 2021 and my dad passed away in February 2023. I have become executors of both their estates a few months ago. I’m pretty sure my attorney gave me incorrect advice to just file a 1041. From what I’ve read it seems like I need to file a 1040 for my dad since he had 2 months of PERS, SS and dividends?? I have zero clue what to do about my brother since he had moved to California 6 or 7 months before he died. I don’t know if he worked under the table or taxed. It’s such a mess right now and I’m lost and soooooooo stressed 😩.
Can I file an extension this way if I have an EIN for both? If you have any recommendations on my other jumbo that would be awesome too 😓. Thank you for this video!! I probably didn’t make any sense as none of it makes sense to me. I’m sorry for the novel.

This is a complex situation, and I'm sorry for your loss. You will need to file a final tax return for the part of the year before they passed.
However, I'm a little concerned that your attorney said to 'just file a 1041' without any instruction on how or why.
Feel free to message me if you need some better advice or look for an Enrolled Agent near you on the IRS website.
