Since the unit that drives the compressor is an engine, you should go over it like any other engine. Check all the fluids, check for gasket leaks, check all the filters, check for a blown head gasket, listen to how it runs, watch it to see if there are unusual vibrations, check how well it runs, etc. Since there is a refrigeration aspect, if you know how, check all that stuff to make sure everything is functioning correctly. Should, of course, also check for structural cracks, corrosion, broken parts to the trailer itself. Check tires for tread and age (a lot of people overlook tire age). Check brakes, check hoses, pretty much anything and everything. You should know more about that trailer when you're done than the person selling it. The more you know about the trailer, the more likely you can make a good decision on it and negotiate the price. Of course, feel free to walk away.

i always checked the oil on the reefer. if its too thin its not lubricating the moving parts. did this while checking the inside, prior to running the pre-trip. i didn't care what the machine said, i had to physically look. can't always depend on the auto pre-trip, a chip might of gone busted.

check tires to see where they are getting eaten. Check the apron (where your fifth wheel attaches to make sure its not bent or rusted. Check the inside of reefer on the floor for welds or holes. If you see mold on the floor (black spots) you'll have a bad time with it.
Best reefers are made by great dane and thermoking unit look for that combo. Stay away from hyundai and wabash shit reefers don't last long.

If trailer is over 10 years old you cannot get insurance on it and that's why it's so cheap also on your pre-trip you need to check the sliders on your tandems if he's been backing them up really hard jackknifing them it's really hard on that slider and they can just destroy the slider and the axles anyway good luck on buying used trailers

Loos like 1 of your tires is scaling up that is not a good sign it means air pressure is low & is wearing uneven or the other tire doesn't match the tire dept so 1 is taller than the other 1.

The First Lady of Boxing Lena Taylor Lena:when you’re an owner! You’re on your own.
As a company driver, you don’t worry about anything. If you’re in the road, and the truck breaks. Your company it has to get you into a hotel. Flat tire, you send a macro in your Qualcomm and a few hours the Calvary shows up with a new one,and doesn’t come out your paycheck. Good luck at school, and make sure that u learn a lot about the rules on the federal motor carrier hand book.
