  • Penthouse and Pavement is the debut album by the English synthpop group Heaven 17, released in 1981.
    The first single, "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang", best demonstrates the left-wing outlook of the lyrics, criticising certain aspects of Britain at the beginning of the 1980s which was under the leadership of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The song was famously banned by Radio 1 disc jockey Mike Read (himself a Conservative and follower of Thatcher) for being overtly political. Other themes explored include nuclear war, religious extremism, American influence in the world and the rise of the Yuppie.
    Heaven 17 drew on R&B and funk to create pop-friendly, danceable hooks. The album charted at No. 14 and remained in the Top 75 for 76 weeks. The album was played live in its entirety by the band in a series of concerts throughout 2010, one of which (in Sheffield) was filmed and shown on BBC Two on 16 May 2010. A documentary about the making of the album was screened the following night.
    This album is featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

      Just looked it up... this is Julian Crampton. John Wilson was the original studio bassist.

    I remember the first time I heard this song as a kid in '81 or '82. Didn't own a bass yet, but I was like, "WTF, that bass line is amazing!" When I finally got a bass, I ended up shedding this line for *years* -- I'm not exaggerating. Cool that the bassist in this performance gives a nod to the ultra-funky line that's overdubbed in the choruses and soloed at the end of the original track. Well done, 17ers!

    I prefer Studio Stuff more most of the time but then thats usually because many bands songs just sound completely different live but if they all sounded this good live then I'd Listen to far more, they really sound great and I just So Love Synth Stuff From 80s, appreciate it far more now than back then

    Amazing! Glenn Gregory sounds EXACTLY the same as he did in the '80s. IMHO they would have done better sticking to synths rather then putting guitar and bass. Others might disagree but thats OK.

      For me, this song is (and always was) made great by the bass guitar. Keyboard bass wouldn't be nearly the same.

    Brilliant! Very cool, much more cleaner, clearer, funky...
    I always loved this song. This version is so much better than the vinyl 12" version released in the 80's
    took them 30 years to tidy up the song

    bought this album back at the beginning of the 80's along with all the 12"s. Have to admit that their not at all bad live, very good in fact, however sportnoticeboard youve got it all wrong. nothing is better than the original studio version. immediately gives me goosebumps, live doesn't. obviously personal perspective, but really I think its the bass playing. still each to their own.

    im a fan of heaven 17, and im 18, i dont mind them playing pent house and luxury gap now and again, but it becomes a bit repetitive, idk why they dont do how men are, or even bigger than america or before after

    awesome live version... love it, but i'm confused as to why the timing of the vocals at the end of each verse is different. (the call and response part - e.g. Knowing no orders can come from above, Full time, )
