Imma keep doing my twist because any style you leave in for more than a month WILL lock your hair up. I've seen it and I've experienced it, so me personally, my scalp can't handle being not washed for 2 weeks and that's when i usually take down my twists anyway 🤷🏿♀️. I agree with you on the wash and go point somwhat but i don't understand how you can say wash n go's are lazy when so many women take hours shingling and defining their hair. If all women were doing was using a bit of gel in their hair and calling it a day, i would agree, but doing styles in general and leaving it in for more than a month is being lazy and will lock your hair up. And I'm not going to use extensions because i don't need tension, i do believe using extensions will result in less matted hair but it will also result in traction alopecia for alot of people. @@Joan-jr8qsI never thought of it that way, you do make a good point, I guess you can also say that about using heat, no matter how careful and responsible you are. In the end it’s all manipulation of hair one way or another. I think the biggest takeaways I’ve gotten from Cyn’s videos is that too much of anything isn’t really good, leave your hair/scalp as cleans and alone as much as possible, and overall less is more. As Cyn always says “think for yourself” so if something she says doesn’t resonate, stick to what you know best
Okay! For me? I stopped doing a lot of that stuff because my body was reacting. For instance too much water in my ears was causing my ears to create more than usual ear wax. Another thing! I don’t think it’s good for my fingertips to be wet that much for so long, the pruning effect is uncomfortable. I also noticed that my hair pretty much performs the same whether I apply a product or not as long as I brush or comb oil onto the strands (not on my scalp). I washed my hair with the twists in! Thanks for making an awareness to this! I noticed immediately how not good the twists were for my girls' hair so I never do it for them. Thank you!
Been natural for 12 years. I always wore twist for the purpose of wearing a twist out. I would have them for 2-3 days max , then wear a bomb twist out. I don’t wash my hair in twisty ( who ever came up with that idea dod some nasty work ) hair is actually simple. But all these rules and random people telling you what you can and can’t do makes it super hard. I have unsubscribed from every single natural hair channel. Cleanse /deep condition / moisturize / style and have fun with your hair. It’s okey to try different styles.
I used to do twist and wash and goes. Though my hair was super long, bra strap length, the first time I straightened it, it was damaged. I had to cut it to shoulder length. Years ago my stylist told me wet hair is weak hair, why this never dawned on me when I was following the natural gurus. Literally my hair kept breaking, from being manipulated wet all the time. I did braids and it pulled out ALL edges! My hair does not like braids or twist they fall out in one or two days. My hair is thriving now that I am a straight natural.
I’m in habit of taking my twist and re twisting almost every night, that’s the key if you just have to do the 2 strand twist. You have to put the work in but when I take them out every night they come apart like a very tender piece of meat 😂 but you have to commit! Or your hair will mat and break, just like Cyn says ❤
You said it perfectly; it was never about helping black women learn their hair! 😮💨 Plus if we were the priority then why were we LAST on that chart! It’s marketing, let’s keep it real with ourselves. When they discovered black women were the opportunity, they took off with products.
Great info. But I can’t help but think this is taking us back to the time when we felt we had to rely on paying to go to hair salons. What should we do?
I’ve been doing wash & gos and twist for a year and a half after a big chop and it is not thriving. Obviously, I need to stop. I’m so lost and over it. I used to get my hair done regularly but it’s too expensive these days. Then they gate keep the knowledge and make you pay hundreds of dollars for education/consultations. So here I am on UA-cam. I’m sick of it but thankful for channels like yours. ❤
❤️❤️Thanks so much for sharing, your transparency is so appreciated . Remember an education is rather expensive so educational information wont be free or cheap. Take your time and study the human body. I only give the basics here on my channel as well. Unlearning team natural brainwash takes time. ❤️
When i was 25 (im 35 y/o now), i used to work for a luxury salon. The majority of the stylists were white. I wanted to grow my hair out so bad, and they told me the harsh truth, what i was using, wasn't going to support my desires for long hair. They were very honest and told me that although they could not help me style my hair, they knew what worked to grow hair. So, i took their advice. I left the oils, butters, and heavy products behind, and i became using salon quaitly products only! My hair has grown to lengths i could've never imagined. Every now and then, i would listen to the natural hair community and mannnnn, it got me in trouble each and every single time and the stylists were always so helpful to get my hair back on track. Now? I dont fall for the natural hair community bs. I follow science. I am forever grateful for those women who helped me.
I got my head pressed by a hot comb growing up. No breakage. Got braids growing up, wash etc... never have been made for black women. Natural hair is the hair on your head coming out your scalp. Regardless of what you do to it. I don't claim all the 1234abc
I "twist" my hair weekly to biweekly on regular blown out hair. Just 8 of them though. I don't add any extra water based products, my hair stays moisturized from wash day till the next time I wash it. I also retwist if I feel like it. This is the best way to twist the hair in my opinion. The twists are loose enough to unravel on their own so locking could never occur. I don't consider them a protective style it's just a style to me. Thanks for spreading this info, because it's too much misinformation out there.
Everything works until it doesn’t. Weathering takes 6 months to 25 years to show up. There are so many things you can do to your hair that don’t involve twist. Thanks for sharing and watching.
I am guilty of wash and goes for years and my hair didn't grow. I never thought a beautician messed up my hair with a terrible hair cut. Its was so bad that I had to let it grow for a year and get four corrective cuts before I stopped doing the wash and goes.
Hi Cyn. Is it okay to straighten your hair every wash day? I wash my hair every 5 days. *I only straighten the roots* because they're very coarse and dense. I use 356°F.
I am so confused because there are people with long hair that have been doing 2 strand twists and they are fine. I am a new natural and I am getting confused every time because everybody is contradicting each other. I think I should just leave this whole natural thing because WOW 🙌
Girl do what works best for you, it’s always gonna be a new video saying don’t do this or that. Everyone I know has long thick hair from two strand twists. Please stop watching everyone videos because then you would be looking for a reason to not do your own hair. I didn’t watch it just came to the comments cause I know they grow.
I only came to this channel for the comments. I have always wore two strands twists for years now and no problem. I pre- poo and detangle before shampooing. Fingers first then I use a comb starting from bottom working my way up. After shampooing I always deep condition. Then use a leave in conditioner and seal with an oil. Keep my twists in until the end of the week then wear it in a twist out. Grew my hair back like this. And also ends are trimmed for any split ends.
Hey, girl I’ve been following your channel for a while now and I truly appreciate your content. I have type 3 low porosity hair. What are some protective styles you recommend?
Ok I do agree with a lot of what you’re saying. However I’m one of the ones that bought the $400. Hair dryer and I did it for a reason I have the sliver bird had it for a while used it religiously but my hand use to get very tired when blow drying my hair with the roller brush literally. The RevAir gives my arm a break and I really like how it blow out my hair so I can clip my hair ends. I have coily medium length hair.
Simplicity doesn’t mean it’s better for your hair. Practice brings perfection you can practice on a mannequin with your texture until you know what you’re doing then try it on your hair. Long term you’ll see the effects, thanks for sharing.
I think your hair deserves that. Your hair is made in your gut and manifest through the pore. Taking the time to learn how to care for yourself is self love. Your hair deserves more than a glory hole sis.
I will say my babies are black with a white daddy and my daughter has fine and really loose curly texture…even with her hair I prefer to blow dry it. Her hair STILL gets tangled very easily and thrives being blown out.
This entire video .facts.i had to learn the hard way in 2009 with 8 months braids.wasnt looking to lock my hair.so I had to cut it.but only the roots were matted and locked
What low manipulation hair styles would you recommend for natural hair that won't damage 4c natural hair. I have high porosity I believe and have thicker haair and the back and thiner hair in the front which is my genetics
Thank you for posting this information although your hair type argument is crazy. You confirmed the reason my hair is falling out. I follow the natural hair influencers so I stopped combing my hair, I kept my hair in twist and I used a lot of products. One time I left my hair in twist for more than 3 weeks and it was so matted and so much hair fell out. Now I keep my hair in 16 cornrows and twist the ends for no more than two weeks. I hydrate and moisturize my hair every 3 days. I cowash, wash and deep condition every 2 weeks. I"ll see how it goes and watch your videos.
Hmmm , I wore twists not twist out couldn’t cope with that … however my hair thinned especially at the crown and no I wasn’t a products junkie , didn’t have the time , money or inclination. On Saturday someone I know has locks , which due to thinning looks like twists they are SOOOOO thin. Casting my mind back to say six years her hair had more body now it looks like spaghetti as it’s dyed blonde. So you are right , washing , leaving dry , twisting ect just beaks down the hair shaft. Let the naysayer scoff , the proof as they say is in the results. I for one is here to prove you correct .
You are correct it's a style for me. .one that I've love since 2006.but I comb my hair out and redo quite often.and the success with growth never fails me.i only use beeswax.only on the hair.
What about Knotless braids? What do you think is the best to do when you’re trying to brown your edges and thicken your hair. I’ve been using do grow and it’s growing my edges back.
So ….is it better to just braid the hair in a few sections like 4-6 as a protective style? Or corn rolls and a variety of methods to make sure you are actually doing your hair often to prevent more breakage from sitting hairstyles that Matt up?
Hi @IamCynDoll, thanks for this video. Do you know anything about: Dominican hair product Bio complex Ampoulle. Do you know anything about this because its slowly going viral on tiktok and I dont understand how this can help my kinky hair, hope you see this ❤ Thanks 🙏🏿
A protective style is one that protects the hair. When your hair is in mini braids what is protecting your hair? Products don’t count. If you add extensions the hair wraps around your real hair protecting it making it a protective style.
Ok so when you wash your hair you have to put heat to it or it’s considered a wash and go? What if you did want to wear your hair in its natural state? Now I’m confused
Keep doing it your way hun. Get a mannequin that matches your texture and try it my way on it. It’s so simple, we make it hard in the bondage of curls. Your black, you have curly hair ok great. Now we need to figure out how to take care of your hair properly.
@@IamCynDoll exactly so after washing your hair what are the proper steps to do if you did not want to blow dry your hair and is blow drying mandatory?
Love, why do you want to make up new ways to dry your hair. Either blow out or do a rod set of some kind to set the bonds properly it’s very simple. My channel is not for people who like wash n gos. Do your thing but as a professional I believe in setting bonds. You can use a blow dryer or a rods set but anything you do should allow you to comb and brush your hair with ease as you style. You don’t do wet styling unless you’re setting the bonds with foam, or blowing it out. Anything else is starting the matting process. If you let your hair air dry because you’re chasing a vanity metric it does more harm than good. You can’t undo the twist or comb your hair without breakage when you air dry. Do you thing but there are no short cuts or hacks. Hair is very simple.
@@IamCynDoll no I’m not trying to make up new ways I’m asking an unbiased question with no opinion of my own to get information to find the proper way on what to do with black hair after you wet it and washed it all of this is new information to me I have locs now so this doesn’t apply to me in a way but this is informative to me I’m just reflecting on the things I used to do when I was a loose natural especially with being a boy we ain’t rod or roller setting our hair so I was asking what else do you do? As I still do my significant others hair whom is natural
Hi Cyn! This may have been previously asked on another video, but is it safer to use a foam on wet hair for flat twist and sit under hooded dryer? Not as a protective style, but as a twist out style. My mom used to style my hair this way back in the day. But I’ve been confused about what to do and what not to do for my daughters’ hair. Just want to make the right decision on what’s best for their hair. I normally just wash, condition, leave-in, blow dry and style with Kenra or Olaplex products.
@@IamCynDoll yes! I used to do twist outs regularly on them, but noticed the breakage that you mentioned in your other videos and I immediately stopped. I now just do what I mentioned above as their hair care routine. Was hoping for direction in how to better style their hair afterwards. For the oldest I may press it out with a flat iron occasionally and the youngest I’ll do some ponytails. Looking for other options.
@@IamCynDoll Over time? Shoot, I didn’t wash my hair until 3 days later after swimming (I know that was stupid) and my hair literally looked fried afterwards 😫
This is exactly what I do but I don't keep a style longer than a week. I braid my own hair, no additions, and spray a light mist moisturizer each morning.
@@Sweety069 Single braids. I have no idea how to do cornrows. I can French braid so I could possibly do that on a smaller scale; I'll have to try that this weekend...

Love if youve been following team natural practices for years it will take more than a few shampoos to undo your practices. Give your body grace to heal from your old practices. Sometimes shampoo is not enough.
@@IamCynDoll thanks Cyn 🙏🏽. Grace, yeah I know. I’m bummed because I don’t see sebum coming in and I was duped for years. Feel silly. But I’ve been watching your content and went through your 7 day challenge. So those are some pluses. I’ve cut off ALOT of hair - disintegrating, splitting, ssk hair. Feel like I’ve gotten most of it off.
When I originally learned about protective styles and low manipulations, what they said was that twist and braids were low manipulation hair hairstyles. Unless they’re being held up in an updo, braids and twists, always brush past your shoulders cut, and that is not the point of a protective style. A protective style is supposed to keep your hair away from your shoulders and away from your clothes. The benefit of these low Manipulation styles is that they keep your fingers out of your hair so that you’re not over manipulating them and putting too much stress on delicate strands
How do people not understand that without extension, hair in twists will be rubbing against itself wrapping around itself getting single strand knots etc. Other women even talk about hair weathering from their hair rubbing against their clothes…
Yes to the part about hair rubbing against clothes and causing weathering. The bottom layer of my hair has single strand knots from rubbing up against my clothes and I literally don't know how to fix it 😭
@@IamCynDollI rollerset or flat iron and wear my hair down. It's longish so I can literally feel my shirt grabbing that bottom layer and snapping hairs 😭 Please help. I don't want to wear ponytails just to keep my shirts from snapping the hairs growing in the nape area. That area is always a struggle for me.

When we know better we do better.❤️
I’m in habit of taking my twist and re twisting almost every night, that’s the key if you just have to do the 2 strand twist. You have to put the work in but when I take them out every night they come apart like a very tender piece of meat 😂 but you have to commit! Or your hair will mat and break, just like Cyn says ❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️THIS IS ALL IM SAYING!!! It’s not a protective style. Very high maintenance.❤️
You said it perfectly; it was never about helping black women learn their hair! 😮💨 Plus if we were the priority then why were we LAST on that chart! It’s marketing, let’s keep it real with ourselves. When they discovered black women were the opportunity, they took off with products.

@@IamCynDoll yes indeed

Hi Cyn. Is it okay to straighten your hair every wash day? I wash my hair every 5 days.
*I only straighten the roots* because they're very coarse and dense. I use 356°F.

Not as bad as twist as long as you don’t keep them in long.
The Rev Air is the most gimmicky thing I’ve ever seen. It reminds me of those late night infomercials from the ‘90s 😂
Been thinking this. I think looser curls are better for twists.

Ok I do agree with a lot of what you’re saying. However I’m one of the ones that bought the $400.

Check the description box.
Try finding an actual style for your hair. We can do more than braids and twist.
Thanks for hearing me love. It’s so easy to observe when you listen without offense I appreciate you!

Hi Cyn, have a 2 year old girl. Do you recommend I blow dry her hair? What protective style should I do for her?
So ….is it better to just braid the hair in a few sections like 4-6 as a protective style? Or corn rolls and a variety of methods to make sure you are actually doing your hair often to prevent more breakage from sitting hairstyles that Matt up?
It’s not a style it’s just putting your hair in 6 braids. What’s protecting your hair?

I don’t recommend it but do your thing.
@@IamCynDoll But what kind of hairstyles is protective enough?
A protective style is one that protects the hair. When your hair is in mini braids what is protecting your hair? Products don’t count. If you add extensions the hair wraps around your real hair protecting it making it a protective style.
@@IamCynDoll How about the thread by african threading?
Twists are low manipulation not protective. Why and how did people come to
think this?
Twists are great
Ok so when you wash your hair you have to put heat to it or it’s considered a wash and go?
When the style is complete can you comb through your hair without breakage?
@@IamCynDoll yes! I used to do twist outs regularly on them, but noticed the breakage that you mentioned in your other videos and I immediately stopped. If you took the challenge ask these questions in the group. You’re not taking advantage of. These issues should be fixed already.
A protective style protects the scalp and ends. Twist protect neither the scalp or ends.
How do people not understand that without extension, hair in twists will be rubbing against itself wrapping around itself getting single strand knots etc.
Other women even talk about hair weathering from their hair rubbing against their clothes…
Omg it’s like we’re in the twilight zone.
