ALMOST lost this #orchid to wrong #semihydroponics set up. I think that we are doing much better now, on an inorganic mount, 'Michael Mount' with a scrubby pad. Still have a long way to go, but the roots growth has really picked up this year. It may not look like much, but it is 100% better than what it looked like last year.

🦒🎠🤞🍀!! She is clearly on the right track, showing lovely roots!! It feels so good to watch an orchid respond to care, doesn't it?
Very windy here as well, warm wind is terrible, it dissecates everything on its way.
No mail, only on monday as per message received which is worrying considering the heat wave this weekend. Enjoy the warmth and have a lovely saturday.

FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️😍💐I am amazed that, after a year, she is doing this... with next to nothing to work with! I have to give some serious props to this orchid and hope that I can return the favor in the coming months! I will keep my fingers crossed for a healthy arrival of your mail! 🤞🏼 and that you will love what you see 😍😍 I was beside myself yesterday. I did end up filming, because I could not wait another day, and of course, today, no wind... 😅 oh well, ce la vie! The anticipation... 2 more sleeps, meine liebe Freundin!! 🙏🏼 I am sorry for not responding to your comment sooner! It was a mad day filming today because no wind and no gardener. I thought I could edit 2 videos 'fast', but ended up just managing one because it turned out to be a little more pedantic than I had anticipated. Still, I took advantage of today and managed to walk King etc etc! I feel a little frazzled though... going to catch me some solid zzzzs before there are none left for me 😬 I hope tomorrow there won't be any wind either! Still have to spray down the vandas, and then 🛌 thank you for watching, vecina favorita! Wake up to a sparkling Sunday ❤️🌸❤️

Hi Stephen 😍💐 she certainly is, and what a trooper to get to this point. Really has had nothing much to work with, and yet, managed to pull of something from somewhere and here we are. Now I have to keep her happy, we had 35ºC today with a lot of hot wind, 20% humidity, it is going to be tough to help her continue without turning into oregano in conditions like this. I may need to put a dome over her. More of the same conditions tomorrow 😬 I love the heat, can handle low humidity, but the wind... its a killer!! Thank you so much for watching, Stephen, and for commenting 🥰🌸

From watching your video and Plant s and Other Things, I get the feeling Howeara is quite finicky. Yet it feels like a complex hybrid shouldn't be! Or perhaps it is the state they are sold in - showy flowers but not enough pseudobulbs.

Love this orchid, but I've lost 3 plants. They die in the same way, they get yellow spot and then they go downhill.
Glad you rescued your plant, I really want to try again but I would hope not to lose it again. I've mounted on those scrub pads too in the past for leptotes. Furnace air filters work too if you're looking for something more porous.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 роки тому +3

Hi Res 🤗💐 I cannot mount my leptotes, or else I am going to turn it into oregano before too long 😅 but I am glad that the scrub pads are working for you as well. Genius idea that Michael suggested as an alternative to epiweb. I use the hob extractor fan filter as an alternative to the more densely packed scrubby pad structure. That is what I have on my white mounts which I have dubbed Ninja Mounts. Scrubby pad only being Michael Mounts 😅 I think that the furnace air filters you are referring to have a very similar make up to the white fluffier stuff that I am using. Would you consider trying another Lava Burst but this time mounting it? btw... that little nugget of intel about leptotes, I have added you to the CareCollab list for that orchid 😉 thank you so very much for watching, I really appreciate it! I gave my leptotes to Beverly, Lucy the Cat channel. I was happy to pass it on after it bloomed for me once after trying potted once, then, scrub pad, then a cork mount. Now it's back to being potted in a semi-hydro method at Beverly's.
I would like to try Lava Burst at one point again, but they are somewhat rare now in Canada. I doubt I would try it mounted...if that's the only way to grow it, then the plant isn't for me. Mounted plants have a hard life in my unhumidified home 😩

Good day to you! I remember this one from last year if I'm not mistaken. Some orchids just absolutely need consistency. I think if you potted it in small leca only, it might have been a different story, but as you said, it was before you earned the knowledge. We learn on every step of the way. But she looks very happy on the mount, the amount of roots speaks for itself :) If you can keep up with the watering, I'm sure she'll be fine :) Hopefully you won't get any nasty winds that could spoil the fun. She's a gorgeous mini. Recovery takes time, hopefully all will be well :) Brings me to something that I'm wondering about ever since you showed the repicuous laelias... how many minis do you have out of your collection? (I know it's a bit subjective, what's mini for one person might not be mini for another, but still I'm curious.) Hope you have a great weekend :)

🌸🥷🏼 SnowDragonka San! Good evening 😍😅💆🏼‍♀️ so sorry for this late acknowledging of your comment! What a day!! I managed to do some filming without getting blown away and no gardener 🙌🏼 so, I went for it. It is possible that I did have it on film when I mounted several orchids in one go, but I am not sure... you have a great memory, so... I am inclined to believe that you do recognize it from last year. IF she grows bigger, her needs may change and then we will have to see about adding hob material to the mount. I don't think that I can pot this one up, it seems to be a little bit of a climber. Early days... just glad that I had something to show and that this one is not 'elsewhere' 😅👍🏼 I usually do not close the dining room terrace door, but, there are a few orchids in a 'situation' right now, that, when those winds are blowing, I close that door. Still babying the new imports from over a month ago, they cannot loose hydration through the leaves. I have pots 1 mile away on a palette that the garden centre has not unloaded yet, because they are short staffed. I offered to come in as an extra to unload the palettes... they did not take me up on that offer. That was 6 weeks ago. When I went there 2 weeks ago, they still had not unpacked them, so... my little laelias, are in a situation and hot winds are a no no!! I love the air going through the house, but... priorities 😅 I am going to guesstimate 40 minis. If considering the size of the laelias as the margin for minis, then, approx 40. Love me the small orchids. 😍 thank you for watching, and for your patience in me getting back to you on your comment!! I hope that you have yourself a wonderful Sunday 🌸🥷🏼

Good evening Andre! 😅💐 I am sorry for the late reply... thank you so much for your patience and for watching. 1x / month 👍🏼 I did not wash it or sterlize it. On none of the mounts that I am using the scrub pad or the hob filter. Out of the packet and on to a support, and get the orchid on that. Seems like, for now, letting the orchid dry out completely is working great. Should I be so lucky that it grows bigger, then it will get more demanding, then ... I may need to adjust somethings to make sure that it stays wet enough during it's active growth, but for now... it is progressing better than expected. 👍🏼

I repotted my little lava burst in small bark and I spray it when the mornings are warm. But in the pacific NW it never really gets very hot. The house temp is set at aprox. 72 degrees though in the summer it does get in the 80’s. It’s May here and still only in the low 50’s in the day and 40’s at night. I hope I can get it to grow better by spraying it a little instead of drowning it in water. Any ideas?

Hi Trish 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so .... a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it 🤗 thank you so much for your detailed conditions, but, I need to ask a few more questions before I can be more specific... how long have you had your Lava Burst? When you got it, what time of year was it? Did it have a good root system when it arrived? Was it growing new roots when you repotted it for the first time before the roots died? Was your set up inorganic and then you switched to the small bark? If it was inorganic at first, can you tell me what media you used? What humidity averages do you have where you grow it? These questions are important because, your thought on it needing to be damp all the time based on the root size was / is correct. But, if the first repot happened when there was no new root growth, and the roots it came with were in tact, then it is possible that the roots died because of the untimely repot (incl wrong season, not in active growth and stress as possibly not acclimated) The effort to save mine on a mount is only because I want to observe what the roots do, also to keep the base from getting too wet, even though I spray the mount a lot, because the roots dry out way too fast in my climate where I average 30% humidity throughout the year. In the years that it is still hanging on, I am noticing that it is behaving like a tolumnia. So, in the past, I lost tolumnias in semi hydro because, just like with the lava burst, I put them in leca, and got the leca ratio wrong. The bases were too wet, because I had to mist the surface a lot to avoid the roots from desiccating on the leca. Recently, I repotted a tolumnia into semi hydro, but... with a dry top layer, while the roots are in an evenly consistently damp media. The roots may die off, but if they do, new roots on new growths will take over. I am must mentioning all this, because it may give a better understanding as to why I am asking so many questions, in order to brainstorm more specifically. I apologize for the late reply, but I hope that something I said was helpful, and if you like, let me about the questions I asked and we can get more specific! Once again, welcome, and thank you so very much for watching 🤗🌸

I’ve heard good things about your site! I very much appreciate any help as I have never had this kind of orchid. I will try to answer all of your questions. I totally understand about that. I live in the Pacific NW. about 40 miles W. Of Seattle. It’s been a very cold wet spring so far. My orchids are i n an alcove that has a large E. Window for morning sun/light, and a large N. Window for bright shade all day. The humidity gage says the humidity is 45-65%. If it’s a warm sunny morning, I mist them. I have a sheer curtain if it gets too hot. I received my Lava Burst shipped in February with a heat pack and it seemed to be fine. Though I’m sure it was stressed. It had Live roots and no cold damage. It was in a small little pot that had lost most of it’s bark so I potted it in fresh bark. It was supposed to be blooming size but it only had one teeny-tiny back bulb and a new small start with no pseudobulb. It looks exactly as it did in Feb. I repotted it again last week when I thought I saw new roots. There were quite a few dead roots but 5 new green roots. I cleaned it up and potted it in small bark like I had it in before. This is not a hot climate. Average summer (July Aug. Sept) is in the 60’s-70’s-80s. Maybe a sprinkling of 90’s, maybe not. Maybe I’m worried about nothing. Maybe I was shipped a seedling instead of blooming size. It’s happened to me before, which is irritating because it wasn’t cheap but it is what it is. Anyway, I digress… I put a few slow release fertilizer 3-4 pellets in and I give all my orchids light liquid fert. Every couple waterings. Maybe I overwatered it. The bark smelled a little stinky. I’m having trouble understanding “it needs water- don’t let it dry-but don’t give it too much water” . I am the only person I know with orchids so I am just stumbling blindly while researching as much as I can. I have several different species (?) of orchids and it gets complicated for me. I do fuss over them a lot. So thank you again and if you need more information I will be glad to send it. I will enjoy all of your videos!

Oh! That is nice to read that you have heard good things about the channel, thank you for letting me know! And thank you for getting back to me with more details, I really appreciate it! First thing that jumped out at me is when you received it and this one is 'easy'... your lava burst is in acclimating mode. They are not fast growers and it is possible that your's is in full acclimating mode, which makes them stop everything they have been doing before, conserving energy, to avoid doing something excessive and causing their own demise. This can take a year, and... you have been sent a seedling, and not a strong one either. That is a naughty move on the part of the seller. As these orchids are slow growers as it is, to send you a single bulb with a starting growth, that is just wrong. Your lava burst is stalled, which is NOT a bad thing, actually it is a good sign because if it were doing something that we would expect to happen this time of year, in the case of your lava burst, that would be radical and that would be a swan song attempt to just grow and exhaust itself. The new growths on lava bursts will rarely form full bulbs until the next growing season, so, for example, my lava burst was growing new growths last season, then the fall and winter temperatures kicked in, the growths did not mature, stayed the same all throughout the winter, and only now, am I seeing the bulbs take shape.... slowly, 6 months later. What you are doing is the right thing, with the misting. Be careful to not get any water into the new growth...as it is not on the move, we don't want any chance of rot. If you can, place it in a saucer of water for the bark to absorb, or, soak the orchid with a water level to half way up the pot... soaking in form of a dunk and then place back where it lives. I find that it is safer to get moisture into the media that way, then the risk of rot by misting, especially on a growth that is not actually on the move. Once you have dunked your pot, let the water drain out on a saucer and set the pot on to that saucer, this way, you won't ever have the pot dry out, you have added humidity around the pot and you are keeping your new growth safe until it starts to get it's bearings! What the seller did, to send you a seedling with a single bulb, that is just wrong on every level, and I am sorry it happened to you! 😞 Do not use any liquid fertilizer if you already have the slow release in your media. As the orchid is not actively doing anything, there is no need for fertilizer in those quantities. Salt build up in the media needs to be avoided, because, when the orchid snaps out of it's funk / orchid jet lag as I like to call it, and then sends out roots, the media may be to salty and the new roots will not stand a chance. I do not see why your lava burst won't make it, but, the new growth and the media must be protected and is the main focus right now. Let me know if anything I said helped, or if I was talking in circles. I am happy to keep this dialogue going until your are comfortable 👍🏼 hope you had a great Saturday 🙌🏼

Thank you for all of your very valuable information! I think I have a much better grasp of their life cycle. And the information on post-shipping and the stall makes me feel a little less frantic. My little LB looks like yours except it only has one growth. I am sad at finding out I might not have blooms for 2-3 years (or more) when I thought I was purchasing a blooming size. I’m sure I need help learning patience. I have several orchids of different species that were supposed to be blooming size that are not. Live and learn. It’s just a roll of the dice where I am since shopping center phalaenopsis are the only ones sold that you can look at. I chose a hobby that might be difficult in my area but I’ll do my best. We are very close to Canada so it’s chilly. Anyway, I will try not to panic if my orchids are sleeping. Gathering up their energy. I watched your video on dividing your older orchid that looks like a Dendrobium (canes without leaves). I have a Dendrobium NOID that I named Ducky after the story of the ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swan. I don’t know what the blooms are going to look like but I’m hoping when the current new growth matures it will bloom next year or the year after. I will be excited to see it. I have to tell you I have had a Dendrobium that was given to me years ago that I was never able to get to bloom. I was able to keep it alive but year after year, nothing. I found out last year it was a Noblie and needed a winter cool rest! I had no idea. I put it in a window in our basement for a few weeks and it just bloomed for me! UA-cam sites like yours are a godsend! Others like you are a precious few that sacrifice their time to bring knowledge to others. Thank you so much for making me a littler smarter! I will keep watching your videos and try to learn as much as I can so my little orchids will be happy and flourish!

@@trishsmith2811 congratulations on your nobile blooms 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀🥳 I got goosebumps reading your comment! I love it when there is a lightbulb moment and then boom!! Blooms!! 🥳 thank you so much for sharing that with me. Leafless cane division? It must have been a dendrobium, but I cannot remember which one it could have been or else I would mention it here. 😬
