  • Easter Sunday 1964, 51 years ago, this ship sailed out on an unknown voyage that would take her straight to the hearts of millions.
Broadcasting and pop music would never be the same. The very beginning of an era: the roaring Sixties, the epicenter of the British Invasion.
And although later there were many other Pirate Radio Ships, she was the original Pirate Queen: The MV Caroline, the first ship of Britain's legendary Radio Caroline.

When Caroline merged with Radio Atlanta, Atlanta (MV Mi Amigo) became Caroline South the original ship (nee MV Fredericia) sailed to a position off Ramsey, IoM, where it became Caroline North and remained until March 1968 when both ships were towed to Amstedam over unpaid debts because the crooks who were supposed to be looking after the station's finances embezzled the lot.
In 1972 both ships were sold. The MV Caroline was scrapped, but the Mi Amigo briefly became a pirate radio museum, before returning to the air as Radio Caroline in September 1972. It sank in 1980 and was replaced by the Ross Revenge... and so the story continued.

The presenters never even got to operate the equipment, it seems, back in the day - they had to employ a DJ - today, the presenters have to cue up records, fade them up and down, perform segues, play the adverts, despite not being supposed to know that the station has adverts - talk to guests, both in the studio and on the phone - everything, in fact!
They had tech ops for decades - technical operators - to play all the records and everything - blame the tech op if the presenter announces The Beatles and The Hollies play instead!
I used to work in hospital radio and we had to do everything ourselves!

Does anyone know the name of the snip of music that starts at the 45 second mark? It's been driving me nuts for years. Brian Mathew once played it on Sounds of the Sixties but I missed what he said as I was driving at the time.

+priapus56 I saw your earlier message today and meant to reply. A facebook contact actually gave me the answer about a week ago. None-the-less I thank you for your confirmation! You can imagine I'm pleased to be able to put this bit of trivia to bed at long last. I'm kicking myself though that it didn't occur to me to check out Les Reed. After all his "Man of Action" is so very well known to all of us old radio fans!
      Thanks again.

Alec Ludlow What is it’s title?

@@crawlinginfilm9683 I think he's saying that it's called 'Man of Action' recorded by the Les Reed Orchestra.

@@nickeldridge9454 I think instead he means only that he recognises Les Reed as being the "Man of Action" guy. The tune around 45 sec in this video is not that one.

@@crawlinginfilm9683 Understood !! ... I've had a listen to all the numerous examples of Les Reed output on YT but regrettably can't identify the small section to which you refer. I suppose nobody is actually saying that it IS Les Reed ... just that it might be.
