    Love the side by side comparison.
    I couldn’t agree more with your conclusion. I have the new Defender and an ‘old’ Defender (not as old as Her Majesty). Completely different cars and shouldn’t be directly compared.
    What can be compared is the invincible feeling and the smile that they put on your face when you get in. That’s the same!

    I give you the new and get the old one! no doubt! I used to be a Series II (1963) owner for a long time, the car was certainly not very reliable, nor comfortable, nor well designed, but adorable! and with a curriculum that few cars have. A classic! It was very simple and straightforward, not pretending anything more than what it was, not like this "Pretender" that they tried to sell us as the continuation of the legendary "Defender"... I do not understand Land Rover, why did they need to produce this thing? Don`t they already have lots of cars like this? This is ABSOLUTELY NOT the "new Defender" because it does not have anything to do with the spirit of that car (simple). If they would have named it Range Rover X, Evoque Y, or Discovery Z it could have been understandable, but this?? So in this way a once faithful Landie owner said Basta! and flew right to Toyota (Series 70`s) who made the better cars anyway. And I am pretty sure this is a one-way ticket!!! But a Series I would be certainly very welcomed no matter what...

      I have loved Land Rovers all my life but it is almost like the company has been kidnapped by accountants.

    The reflection shot takes the price! simply awesome! the new defender has transitioned into something modern and so refined that of course it will never be what the older - series 1-3 and the first defenders were. That said, go ahead and find yourself the vintage rovers and experience them. Nothing like them out there. looks alone has won me over, I quite LOVE the series 1 ROVER, It is very utilitarian looking compared to the series 2 because of its slim body, very close to what the jeep is. I first loved the 1980s, 1990s defenders, then settled on the series 3 being my first choice when I get a rover and now love and want to own a series 1 too!

    It's because the name Defender wasn't replaced, that the reception has been controversial. It would have been better to call it something entirely different, remembering the Defender for what it was. In itself the new vehicle is clearly a decent vehicle but so obviously not a Defender.

    • @islandrovers

      That logic doesn't hold up because the last generation Defender didn't have much in common with the first generation either. People complaining about the new Defender are just pissed that body on frame Land Rovers are dead. They wouldn't be less pissed if they killed the Defender forever and called this something else.

    • @onetonlandrover
      @onetonlandrover 4 роки тому +3

      @@mechmat12345 Nah, I've seen loads of comments saying it should have been laid to rest (the name). Nobody reasonably expected it to just be a warmed over version of the old, but they haven't even tried to make a strong connection. It's not comparable to the new mini/beetle/fiat500 which at least take visual ques from their predecessors. The old was a true utility vehicle, I have a late model 110 and it's very similar to my IIA. You can't say that about the new one and that's a shame. I wouldn't say I'm pissed about it, maybe just a little sad.

      @@mechmat12345I disagree. You say " last generation Defender" but what exactly are you referring to? The shape of the Defender, from 200Tdi to Puma, followed that almost precisely to the 90/110/127 named models, and the Stage One, all having very much in common, so much so that some people think they are all Defender and it went from Series directly to Defender. That is wrong. That 90 being winched up a dam, was simply called a 90. A completely new vehicle should have a completely new name.

    Having driven a new Defender and own a 1966 Series 2A; I must say the older models were far more comfortable and user friendly. They kept you in touch with the real world.
    The new ones; you don’t feel the road.
    The old ones ; you get to experience every pebble and pothole up through your spine!
    Who wouldn’t love that! I would surely miss manipulating the many levers and breaking a sweat steering and stopping in my daily commute to the mailbox and back with the old series.
    The old headlights will never blind the oncoming driver. Much safer!
    The new ones have artificial climate control. No fun.
    The old ones have vents under the windshield so you can taste the bugs. As well as windows that only open part way. You get to be hot and cold at the same time! A wonderful feature!
    On the new one, you can change the temperature of the passenger seat with your smartphone while you are on the other side of the country. ( in what world is this a useful feature?) With the old series, you can smell the leaky fuel tank under the front seats.
    Lest we forget the best feature of all; we can tell if the older series has oil in it, simply by glancing underneath.
    The older cars are safer as well in that they can’t go fast enough to do more than brush a pedestrian to the side of the road.
    And: should you happen come across a dead rhino or elephant in the road , the older vehicle has plenty of ground clearance to just step over it.
    Stunning photography!📸🎥

      @islandrovers  4 роки тому +3

      That's definitely the conclusion I've reached. The New Defender is a great car... but it's a very distant relative from the original - it's no longer a utility in the true sense - this film is more about putting the oldest and newest together. 👍🏼

      Islandrovers yes, I’m not even sure what the point was, it’s just like all their other products...if they actually tried to make something which could be used in the utility sector then it wouldn’t be so bad, but this clearly isn’t designed for that... big price, packed with electrics and far too plush! We use them for pulling ships ropes and wires and they’ve done brilliantly for many years now, can you imagine this, heavy boatman jumping in and out covered in grease and saltwater, I don’t think it would last like our old Land rovers have!

      Islandrovers I just hate led lights. Far too blue Though I have got a warm white led bulb in the texmagna indicator switch. It’s a real faff to change it , and it’s bright enough in daylight too Plenty of dark little lanes in Sussex, I’d rather drive them than dual carriageways. Not a choice that bothers you often I suspect!

      We only have one dual carriageway, a mile or so long! I don't like the cool temperature LEDs either, The lamps I have in my Defenders use a warmer type of LED and are even adjustable

    Really good video. I simply love both vehicles. I’ve had both series (3) and defenders and would love to have the new defender. Maybe one day, keep up the good work.

      Cheers Steve. I know is a polarising vehicle, but now I've seen the Grenadier unveiled, I think the New Defender shows that it's important to move with the times. Doesn't mean we don't live the old ones as well

    It will only go down from here on, they will not be able to keep this shape alive for the next 50 years.

      Yeah it's not got longevity. But then I've been told that the plastics in all modern cars are designed to start degrading after 9 years!
