Do the engraving on the back of the ruler for a cleaner look.

Powder coating is not good with a laser because it needs to be heated for at least 10min at 400deg F. The flash point on wood is around 700deg F. So I ran an experiment by heating the powder with an infrared heater with my handheld infrared thermometer and it came out much better or you could put it in an actual oven at 400deg F. (not the one you cook with). that will allow it to cure and should be kept in there for at least 10 - 20 min. I'm just getting started so my plan is to get an actual oven to do this. There's another youtube where this guy ran some extensive tests with the laser and the results are not good. the powder is not melting enough to flow together.

Try heating the powder coating with a heat gun instead.

You guys are awesome. I just wanted to ask, would a higher DPI when doing the Powder Coating method smooth it more? I've never done it before, so it's an honest question haha

It might we have not tried to change it. If you try different settings, let us know how it goes.

What kind of power paint do you use. I bought some tempera powder paint and it didn't work.

Hi from Spain. Using powder paint is not a good idea, because that paint is used to paint metal using electricity (electrostatic), it is not paint for wood and it will not fix well.
To melt the powder you would need a constant and uniform temperature, and it is not possible with the laser. You would have to defocus the lens a lot to make it much softer. Even so I think the finish would never be good.
I think it is too much work not to achieve a good finish, I would not recommend it.

just use a heat gun, works fine on wood because the final bond is done with heat, not electrostatic.
