- Hello again! I am back with another ordinary life vlog - we're picking up our first ex-battery hens and welcoming them to their life of retirement in our garden :) Also some outtakes and highlights from my April Vlogs series this year!

*Hello hello! I have had a few questions about what an "ex battery hen" is so I thought I would pin an explanation* 😊
*Our new hens are ex commercial birds, bred and kept for egg production, they have been kept indoors in cages for their whole lives. They are around 17 months old and have reached the age of their first moult, which reduce eggs production and therefore makes them no longer commercially viable, so they are sent to slaughter :(*
*Organisations like the British Hen Welfare Trust rescue these hens and put them out for adoption. We rescued ours from them and the link the their website is in the description.*

Oh my goodness. I had to watch bits of the vlog outtakes several times because they made me laugh! Any time you feel like putting outtakes at the end of the vlogs, we'll all enjoy them! 😂😂😂

The combs of the new chickens were already looking better in just a week! I know you’ll take great care of them!

Hannah and Martha already looks so much healthier…their combs have already got so much more colour from when your first brought them home. They’ve definitely gone to a really good home 😊
Been up and down that hill a few times visiting Foal Farm and it’s such a horrible hill to pull out of!!!! I can’t wait to have a bigger garden and be able to rescue some hens, poor little things ❤
We have been eating plant based for quite a few years now and it gets a lot easier as time goes on and the Bosh books are really good

Thank you for sharing the beginning of your new adventure with the 2 rescue chickens. It's interesting that they immediately knew to peck and eat the grass. I've been a "loose" vegan for about a dozen years now. I say "loose" because I will eat meat/fish/dairy if I'm at someone's house or at a restaurant and that's my option. I don't complain or expect anyone to make allowances for me and my way of eating. This was a really nice video to watch, thank you once again!
They were sure rough looking , what a difference ! But those roads 😯 lol!
Those roads were tricky even for me, I'm used to twisty turny country lanes but that hill is horrible 🫣

Great episode Ali - those girls will fluff up and fill out very nicely. We have a lady in Ocean Grove (Aust) who brings her chickens to the beach and takes them for a surf. So through your wonderful recommendations in April I crochet 2 Mabel chooks, ordered the Chinese smoky tea and have almost finished listening to Lessons in Chemistry! My pin arrived in the mail as well and looks fantastic (thanks for the surprises as well).

Poor chickens, they looked so sad at first but they must be feeling better as their wattles are getting redder and not so pale.

Lovely vlog. You will find jackfruit in a tin, in my local supermarket it’s with things like tinned peas tomatoes etc. Enjoy baking from the book.
Thank you! I tried the tinned veg and tinned fruit (long shot!) aisles, and World Food - it was probably staring me in the face and I missed it 😅 I might try Sainsbury's to get some :)

Hannah and Martha seem to be adjusting well. I tried to get the Six Tudor Queens on my Library app here in the US. They do not have them....bummer.
How nice to adopt those chickens …… I only buy my eggs from a farm where you can see that the hens are running around free …… costs a bit more but I like knowing that the hens are free to roam around ………. Glad to know that the two you rescued will have a happy home ….. … love the clips from April 😂😂…….📚💛📚

Lovely to see Hannah and Martha settling in with you for their future life of Riley! They don’t actually look too bad apart from feather dilemma! We had some that couldn’t actually walk for a while! Such a rewarding thing to do. Loved your outtake montage xx

oh the poor little girls, meek little Martha and Hannah are so bedraggled! Maybe HeyHey and Peggy can give them makeovers...looking forward to seeing them blossoming into full henhood. So fun watching them enjoying some freedom after their rough start in life, and look at that, they already gave you an egg as a thank-you gift!

I was not surprised the first meeting with Hannah & Martha was uneventful. Heyhey and Peggy might not have recognised them as chickens. They looked so frail poor things. I hope they soon get their feathers back and start enjoying their new life. Hope to see them again soon.

Oh my word the end of the Anne Boleyn book traumatised me for days! But Jane Seymour's is a much gentler story to help you get over it I promise. I really enjoyed Anne of Cleves (number 4) too as I learned a lot, Catherine Howard was also a tragic tale but well told and I am now nearly at the end of Katherine Parr's story. Such a great series! xx

Wow! That is an eye opener. The difference between your chickens and the new your chickens is shocking. Your old girls (no offense) look so healthy and well nourished. I thought all chickens look like that. Those poor rescue girls. So glad they have you guys to take care of them now. ♥
It shocked me too, even though I knew what to expect! Our original girls suddenly look HUGE and plump compared to the new girls 😅

They are still call “ex batts” even though the battery cages are effectively banned, but the commercial birds still live in horrible conditions :( xx

Jackfruit in our supermarket (Tesco) in the aisle with tinned chickpeas, tinned kidney beans etc. It usually comes in tins and takes on flavour very well. Great for a faux pulled pork type BBQ flavour dish.
Ah thank you! I checked with the tinned toms, the tinned fruit and in World Food but alas Asda didn't come up with the goods 😅 I will try Tesco next as I actually really like jackfruit, it has a lovely texture :) 😋😋

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Hannah and Martha to start looking more healthy and feathered. In the week from arriving to the second time we saw them, they seemed friendlier and their combs appeared to be a bit redder. That may have just been the difference in light. How wonderful that you can give them a good home! I'm looking forward to seeing Gayna's at the beginning of June.

You are right, their combs are redder every day and almost unflopped now too! Hannah is feisty and confident and Martha is getting braver but still has to recover her feathers, bless her xx

I'm sorry, but your new chickens are pretty funny looking! Did they loose their feathers from stress? I have a cat that kinda looked the same when we got him from the shelter. But his fur grew back in.

I agree to let your daughters explore their eating styles. If nothing else, they’ll surely appreciate parents cooking in the future. My mom always allowed me to come home from high school and cook up French toast. As long as I cleaned up, I was free to do my own thing 😉. In college I chose a vegetarian diet. Again I would put together my own meals when I was home. Kudos for great parents!!

Hannah and Martha have definitely ended up in a very loving home, they will look so different in a few months. ❤ I have made my own Mable chunky chicken, my youngest son has claimed her 😂
I think any chubby Mabel chicken left unguarded will be stolen 😅 They're irresistible!

I wish I could have a couple of hens, but it's against city bylaws where I live. Honestly, sometimes Canada is so backwards. I'm also so envious of how green and lush it is there. Our trees are just starting to get leaves. And we have already had smoke drifting in from forest fires in Northern British Columbia which is so early. I live in Saskatchewan which is two massive provinces over.I hope they get rain soon. Anyway I enjoyed your vlog as always. All the best to you and your family. 🐔 🐔 🐔 🐔 ❤
