Fishing a Nearshore Reef for Mangrove Snapper with Shrimp

  • In this video, I drop down live shrimp on a nearshore artificial reef 4 miles offshore of Tampa Bay, Florida in search of big mangrove snapper. After a failed morning of tripletail fishing, I was looking to catch some fish to fill the cooler. I quickly discovered that there were some snapper hanging around the structure under the boat. I then started recording and was able to easily catch my solo limit of good sized snapper in about 45 minutes!

    Used to catch em up to 22" off port Tampa where the gypsum barges tied up...cobia ,etc. I even caught a little red grouper. I caught my bait...greenback shad on the middle grounds. That was 25 years ago. Nice job "Dude"

    State and federal regulations require all commercial fishers and recreational anglers fishing for any reef fish species to have and use certain gear. In state waters, reef fish species include groupers, snappers, amberjacks, gray triggerfish, red porgy, sea bass, hogfish and tilefish. State Waters of the Gulf of Mexico Required Gear
    When fishing with natural bait, non-stainless steel, non-offset circle hooks are required

    If you can't get live shrimp, is frozen shrimp fine?

    • @SeeYaDude

      Mangrove snapper will often eat frozen shrimp too, but sometimes they're finicky and seem to only eat live bait

    • @SeeYaDude
      @SeeYaDude  3 роки тому

      Learning from UA-cam videos is great, but nothing compares to how much you learn from getting out on the water and learning from experiences. Live shrimp will be your best bet for bait as a beginner because almost everything eats shrimp

    Fairly new to your videos; really helpful. Just bought a house in Apollo Beach and am ready to hit the water soon! I’ve done mostly lake and bay fishing. Not sure what it is but 4 miles out on your own. Maybe because I’ve always been where I can see the shore. Done it with charters and it was no problem and great fishing. What is your rule of thumb for going off shore alone? Time of day, weather, etc.?

    I thought off shore mangrove snapper have to be 12 inches ?

    • @SeeYaDude

      The size limit for mangrove snapper in the Gulf of Mexico is 10 inches in state waters (from shore to 9 miles offshore) and 12 inches in federal waters (from 9 miles to about 200 miles)

    • @SeeYaDude
      @SeeYaDude  3 роки тому

      Look online for the public numbers to the different piles of structure out there. Once you plug those in, go out there (when it's not busy) and troll around those spots while keeping an eye on your graph to find the structure. From there, it's trial and error until you can find the piles that are really holding the fish
