Thank you for the tutorial! To buy off the rack, I need to pickup large to fit my shoulders, height, and arm length, and that leads to a baggy fit. I completed my first tailoring early this morning, of a long sleeve flannel shirt and it turned out terrific! I used the zigzag overstitch, finished it with a top stitch to hold the seam allowance flat to the inside, and better match to the original hem style (had a double lapped seam with two visible top stitches).
I bet that shirt looks amazing now! So happy this video was helpful to get you a better fit. Plus, people are gonna be staring at how well your new shirt fits!!

This is awesome, I had a pile of shirts to tailor and this made it an easy and fun task! One of the other helpful things I found was for a shirt with a striped pattern, using the stripes as a reference while putting in pins and sewing. Thanks so much dude!!

Omg yes. There are so many baggy, balloon dress shirts that are just terrible. But when I find a nice, fitted dress shirt through the torso, the neck is too small! This should help bigtime.

I have some that I really like and was wondering about a way to resize them ... and here you are with the easy to follow process on how to tailor them to fit! Plus I’m saving money by not having to buy new shirts. I just have a basic sewing machine, so it was very helpful when you showed how to use a zigzag stitch to finish off the inside. This is great as the shirt I recently made with help from your tutorials needs tailoring as the back hem seems to billow out at the back. Putting a couple of darts in was suggested.
You could totally do darts, but if there is too much fabric under the arms, it would look kind of weird. Its always better for men to bring the side seams in. Darts usually work better for women's bodies, but they certainly work for everyone in a lot of situations
@@TockCustom The awful pattern I used said to sew the sleeves in after the side seems so i'd have to make sure it would work ok taking the seems in all the way up the sleeve. The pattern I used cost £4. I priced the one you worked from and it was £20 ($25) I guess you get what you pay for but your tutorial was informative and inspirational in me learning to sew.
I'm a total sewing noob but will definitely be trying this out soon!

My next project will be to (attempt to) shorten a regular dress shirt to make it an "untucked" shirt, or one that is meant to be worn untucked. I don't imagine that this will be too difficult, but your videos have helped me tremendously!
That's a great idea. All you have to do is just trim along the bottom, and then hem it all the way around. You might get some bulk where the plackets are, but there are some tricks to keep things looking smooth there. I may have to shoot a video on that at some point.

awesome video. im pretty tall but rather skinny, so finding stuff like flannels that fit me properly is a bit of a pain (have to go with L or XL tall sizes to get the shoulder width and the height, but then it looks like im wearing a trash bag). gonna get to sizing them up nice this weekend
Awesome video - my alterations seldom look as nice as yours. My serger was the best investment I made next to my utility sewing machine. Many of your viewers may have an overcast foot included with their machine that has a bar on the right side. The right side of the stitch goes just off the edge of the fabric and the metal bar. The bar keeps the tension of the thread from pulling the edge of the fabric down and in, keeping the seam allowance flat. The bar is attached on the front but is free on the back allowing the stitches to slide off as you stitch forward.

Love the way your projects look, could you do a brief video on adjusting the pattern to get a better fit instead of going back and tailoring? Have watched all of your beginning to sew videos, even though I started sewing 50 plus years ago. I still have trouble getting a proper fit. Thanks
Once you get used to the basic construction, all you have to do is just bring the seam allowance on the side seams up through the sleeves in to your desired fit. and that's it! Then you wont have to unhem the bottom and restitch. I do it on every shirt I make, perfect fit every time.
Essentially, every shirt I make is a custom, handmade, fitted shirt... and they always turn out the way I want them to :)
Found your channel yesterday. Watched 6 vids so far. Buying a machine, hopefully, right now. Got a special project but, after that, I realized I can make/tailor my own clothes. Thanks for that! I just have a quick q- Why, when doing the zigzag stitch to prevent fraying, why do you have to ensure that one stitch is off the edge of the fabric? I understand that it's emulating a serger but wouldn't both stitches in the fabric(right and left zigzag) do an even better job of preventing the same fraying? I know that it stands to reason that you're right and my thinking is wrong and naive due to lack of experience but I'd love to understand the theory/mechanics as to why having that stitch land off the fabric does more to secure the weave than if both were inside the seam allowance.

Tailoring pants can sometimes be more challenging than making them from scratch believe it or not... so I'll have to do some more research before I get to that part :)

Why do we open the roll ham on the sleave and the bottom of the shirt, but not on the T-shirt, when we want to fit it slimmer?

I can totally do that! I actually have a pattern for a women's shirt that uses pretty much all the same techniques. In the mean time... the collar part of this video is the SAME way you do cuffs on a sleeve. But I'll have to revisit that when I have time :)

I mentioned my sister because she have this grunge style so loves these red and black plaid shirts to throw on, you know? and we always find those on men's sections at the stores. I don't know what happens in women's sections, but you cannot find good flannel shirts there. So, when I saw the cover of this pattern you're using, I felt like the long sleeved version could work great.
But, as I said, a woman's shirt pattern probably would be better 😂.

Love this video! Just got a brother seweing machine and love this new hobby. Silly question... Many of my button shirts have a curved hem. Since Im short and have hence a short torso, i need take a couple inches off my shirts. When a shirt has a curved hem, is there a special ruler you use for that? I know for a straight hem shirt, you can easily draw a straight line across with a normal ruler to know where to cut, but seems not so simple with a curved hem shirt. Thanks. You're the best.
Tock Custom should pull his hair back when he does the reveal so we can see the whole collar on the shirt. It's such an important part of a shirt especially one that was homemade. Just a suggestion as I felt there was something critical missing after an otherwise great sewing shirt tutorial. How the collar looks and how it lays around the neck.

If they're short sleeves, you'd just trim the length and re-hem the edges. If they have cuffs it would be much more elaborate, where you'd have to remove the cuff, shorten the length, and then reattach the cuffs. One method is easy and the other is a bit of extra work
Videos always show how to tailor for slim figures. I need a tutorial on how to make a shirt tailored for someone who has 20 extra pounds. There does not seem to be a video on this on UA-cam. Any possibility you could do one? I subscribed to your channel.

Hi, I've lost a lot of weight and I need to make my 2XLT Shirts into XLT Shirts. This video is great for the body and the arms but I need to move the shoulders in a little as they are now dropping too low. How do I do this? Do you have a video for this? My question is, would you do a tutorial about making long sleeves for a dress shirt? I found a man's western shirt pattern that my mom and grandma had started back around 1974, the pieces were laid out but not cut. The pattern is the Simplicity 6693, I have cut it out, sewn the yokes, front and background panels of the shirt and attached the both the button and buttonhole bands. I applied the interface to the wrong side of one of the bands. I think it will still work. I'm getting ready to attach both sleeves, however, the wording of the directions are a bit confusing.

I suppose I'd tailor it so the shirt was straight from your largest measurement. You wouldn't want it to be fitted up top around your chest, and the get bigger around your stomach, so maybe just tailor it to 44 inches around
Would it have worked better for you to have made the medium sized pattern to start with or would that changed the sizes of the rest of the shirt?
Well I'm tall and thin, so a medium shirt is too short for my length, so I start with a large and then tailor it in to be more slim fitting. Hope that makes sense
how about a collar for a camp shirt?
Does this work the same for thinning out the waist of a shirt? I often buy larger shirts to fit my shoulders/chest, but then the waist is baggy.
Yes! Just put the shirt on, make marks with chalk where you need it tailored in, and do the sewing there. If your hips and arms are comfy, just leave those as they are.

Tock just to clarify on the seam allowage if you would. I have a McCalls Patten 2149 and it has a dotted line around the inside of the outer line which is 1.5cm away from the outer line. I assume the solid line is the cutting line and the dotted line is the sewing line. Before I start tracing etc for my first shirt I just want to make sure I have that right please. Cheers Edward
Typically, the dotted line on the inside would be for a different size shirt. The seam allowance is always built into the shape of the pattern. So if you're making an XL shirt for example, that would be the solid line on the outside, and then its a dotted or dashed line for the L size shirt, and then something different for a medium size, etc.
Hope that makes sense. I know the pattern instructions are super long, but you might find the info there as well :)

What is the pink handled tool you used to point? I have one and don't know what it is

Thanks Tock. The tool I am referring to is like a screw driver but it has a hole in the shaft near the tip, and it seems to have a tiny hole at the tip. The handle is also pinkish and it came with my Brother sewing machine, in the tool packet. I am going to see if you have a vid about machine tools, fingers crossed 🤞
What if you don't want to take any size out of the sleeves? I have gorilla arms and a tiny waste.
Much easier to measure body and tailor the pattern before you make shirt
