I wouldn't say you got ripped off necessarily. The seller didn't seem like he was being honest at all that's for sure. I think you've got what it takes to make it worth it in the end. It already runs without smoking and even while wires were disconnected so it's got potential.

I don't consider it being a rip-off because he can get everything fixed without much added cost and if he decides to sell right now, he could make a profit. I think people are caught up in the fact that the dude lied and it caught fire. Yes, those are horrible things but take a step back and look at the big picture. The last quad he worked on never caught fire but it needed way more work than this one. This one will be fixed easily. Quads aren't cars. They don't need a clean Carfax. Lol.

Yea this i don't understand????? You can see it was in a fire, but why say it was a new filter,like it was gold or something doesn't make sense the seller would lie about that
some are wierd.... if you dont know shit about it then dont tell lies....
only time i lied about i quad is that i said the engine oil was changed recently... what i meant by that is that i added oil 5 months ago and didnt use it ever since...
overall i always list every thing i have done to the quad and what i think needs to be done... and if i missed something and didnt list it, its not within my capablity to see or find it or know it. had one dude complain (not being racist but was a black guy (and they always the same..) that kept lowering the price but at the end paid what i ask for it but only had 800 cash and 150€ in cheque... i would have said got get all cash... but it was my dad decision his quad .. anyway guess what next day dude wrote me this is wrong this is wrong is you dont reply today i will cancel the cheque.. blablabla, god i had to tell him i listed every thing i know and i done.
he said the classic, my mecanic friend said this this this this. (it was leaking oil it was leaking fuel it had lose wires) i said never leaked oil. and how can it leak fuel..?? and lose wires u saw them and i said it blinker are not hooked up.
the best part was he said it was leaking fuel from the cap (it was a bashan shineray 200 quad) a cap that opens with a key, he said when he filled it up it leaked from top when driving...
i said euh normal my dude dont fill it to the top.. (i was like yeah STFU you idiot) anyway he kept saying u lied to me blablabla, i ended up with dude i listed every thing i done and i know, if not listed it cause i didnt know im no MECANIC, you saw the bike u tested it...
never heard anything again... cheque did get credited on the bank so all good.. he seemed like a nice guy his wife also very nice people... but dont fuking piss me off next day saying stuff, its sold what u want me to do... i listed all i know im in no way a mecanic so if i missed something is cause i didnt notice.... you tried the bike rode it..
had a similar experience with a other china quad (shineray200) but this dude was very nice and bough it in the morning for asking price 1000€ and played with it the hole day first quad and road legal, next day he wrote me, nothing mean just listing what was not good with it. but he will fix it, just minor details and he was happy with it either way (leaking oil i did know that but didnt list that also didnt ride it for 4 months, and something with tie rods i didnt know i knew it drove very bad i tought it was just cause its a shit china quad...

2300 is way to much for that piece of junk. It was literally of fire, and probably stolen.

I've seen a few on Facebook marketplace in my area in North Dakota in mint shape for 3500. You couldn't put the remainder of that 2300 and get the same quad...
39 13 sprocket set up is what I run. I love it.
I can hear a rattle on your bike maybe the timing chain or tensioner. And you should check your valve clearance.

04-05 didn’t have a neutral light. They added it to the 06 and up with electric start.
Any cheap 450r is gonna need work. I bought mine for 2800 and it needed valves adjusted and a timing chain fixed it and ended up building it up to be a race quad then sold it

Do not use that gear oil on the transmission side!!!! Use what it calls for from Honda! I owned a 2004 TRX 450r for 14 years. This is NOT a 400ex but if it's taken care of it will last a very long time. I know this quad well, if you have any questions feel free to contact me.
And get rid of that beat up K&N and get a good UNI foam filter and use the bel-ray filter oil the blue stuff its super sticky and water beads off of it watch out tho its like aint-seize once u open the bottle its everywhere

2300 wasnt bad cause those are like 3 to 4000 dollar quads and I'm sure u can have that fixed up nice with close to 1000 bucks

I wouldn't worry because you know how to fix them now, that's the way I look at bikes when buying them what need work 👌

Not ripping on you but i don't think you got ripped off, I think you should of been able to see all the fire damage and bad air filter when you went to look at it. Do you even look at them or do you just pay and leave I just don't get it all that stuff is easy to see. Do you need glasses?

He absolutely gets me everytime with how he kicks it over like it's a CR500 like it's going to break his ankle and kick back on them I've never had to do that with a 4-stroke 450 of my life I just can't help but laugh my ass off
Its actually super common for 04/05 trxs to kick back, ive seen the kicker push people legs back up into the bars and slice their knees wide open, its also pretty common for them to kick back hard enough for them to crack the case around the kicker
I've owned and worked on trx450rs since 2005 and im far from a expert but I've always ran the Honda brand 10w-40 (gold bottle red cap) on both sides of all mine and they've lasted me quite awhile my 06 is still on stock bottom end sure some with more expertise will chime in but that 75-90 I think is to thick for the motor side long as it doesn't have molly in it u can probavly use it on the clutch side but to keep it simple I always ran 10w-40 on both
@2Stroke Tyson should b fine in a 2-stroke ive ran everything from 15w-40 to like 80w-85 with out a issue. On a 2-smoker the oil is lubing the trans and the clutch so a thicker oil is better where on the engine side of the like a trx450r u wana run a 10w-40 or more a motor oil like he did in the video I personally always ran the same oil on both sides just to keep it simple
If you take the oil filler cap off when draining the oil it will drain faster cause the air has somewhere to vent out. Just a tip that's helped me out when I'm on a time crunch
Pretty good atvs I’ve had 7 trx450’s all you half to do is keep oil changes and check valves and your good. The book says to change the rear axle bearings like every 15 tanks of gas or something like that if I remember right. Some of the electric start had issues with the starter clutch but yours is kick start so you shouldn’t have nothing to worry about.

that air filter is long gone, i would just get a new OEM one, you can only clean them so many times before you gotta replace them and a clean air filter is not far behind as important as fresh oil
Yup really important and not that expensive. Its a crucial part
To wheelie that thing is real easy. clutch it up instead of trying to power wheelie. In 2nd gear when the rpm is mid way snap the clutch & pull back to the balance point & you can ride it out as long as you want don’t pin the gas keep it at the valence point & shift WITHOUT THE CLUTCH & ride it through all the gears if you want. Just a helpful hint.
You know what else works great for cleaning plastic and engines is scrubbing bubbles foam bathroom cleaner. Try it. You'll never use anything else 💯

I think when u were changing the oil filter there suppose to be a spring there that goes on the other end I do believe look it up to make sure

I payed 2k for an 04 yfz 450 and it ran good but blew up my 3rd day of owning it. I just spent a grand on new oem parts and gonna make this thing rip, gl man
The air filter could be easily be cleans with semi hot water and soap leave in in for like 30m and shake vigorously in the soapy water works like a dime 10/10 highly recommended
I’m pretty sure the 04-05 trx450 didn’t have a neutral light.., may be wrong but if there was it would be on the left side of the motor down by the shifter there would be a pole for a wire to hook onto, 400ex has one down there if you look
The 04/05's are cool but they are a little slower stock vs stock against an 06+. I think stock 04/05 hp is around 33 & 06+ stock is around 40 hp. Then with aftermarket exhaust, jetting, Hotcam/HRC cam, & removed air box lid the 06+ makes around 48-49 hp (numbers vary between dynos). Then if you want real power... port, bigger piston, race gas ect. These engines are capable of making huge power! Hoping to get my 06 450 making more power soon.

Course he got ripped off and never looks at anything. how do you not notice every plastic component on a whole thing is melted. and how many times has he heard oh it's a new air filter and there's nothing even in there it only takes a minute to take the box off, wake up pay attention learn from ur mistakes. If I would seen your post I wouldn't have left mine. You nail it you can't blame the seller if you never look them over. Seem he make deal over the internet then just goes and picks them up without looking at them.
I think you were right the first time when you filled the oil to the “H” mark btw. At the high mark when it isn’t running is correct. Of course the level will go down when it’s running because the oil is being circulated. Adding more will make it way to much of I’m not mistaken. Might want to look into that to confirm.
By the way Honda says you can actually use the same oil for both engine and transmission. I used amsoil synthetic dirt and it helped my 05 run greater. I sold it though and know own a yfz 450.
Hot water and Palmolive will cut the grease and oil on those K&N filters . The hot water will break it down . I just roll it around and then change the water and soap out a few times and there will be no more dirt. Nice 450. In 2006 they changed the motor and FCR carb from Honda . Even higher compression and about 42 horsepower vs 35 horsepower . Hard to find one for less than 3500$. But the 2004 and 2005 have more torque . And I love torque .

I wouldn't worry to much about it Joe....it's a Honda and it's running and not smoking....I think you should fix it up so you can make a killer profit or keep it....I would definitely keep the 400ex tho but make it super nice....way more fun to ride and it has electric start lol....👍👍👍 Keep up the great work brother
Three real kicks. Well 4 days, 3 kicks. So far so good. Since the suspension is so much better it would be a better bike for me. Fuel consumption should be great for an old guy like me. Even without 4X4 it would keep me entertained all day easy. Looks fast. Broken plastic is a downer.
It's your job to make sure you know what your buying . Every seller won't always tell you the truth. You had all the time in the world to take a actual mechanic and test it out
New trike idea you should get a Honda atc 250r they were the fastest production three wheeler open to the public
technically the tiger 500 Is, or a atc250r with a built cr500 motor

Wiring harness is a pain in the ass to replace but you seem to need to given that a lot of the things are melted, do a compression test and oil changes, add headlights and it’s worth around 3500ish depending on engine life
🤦♂️ my goodness man, how slow can someone be? You have already learned the lesson on if a PO tells you he did something that you never believe him and you have a look for yourself. I can tell you I rebuilt it and you would actually believe me 🤣🤦♂️ and ditch the K&Garbage, they do nothing but feed the motor dirt. Also, the W on the oil container stands for Winter not weight. Come on people, if we are going to be working on the quads and bikes let’s at least do some basic research please.

I bought a 08 Honda trx450r for $4500 Canadian it has aftermarket rims and air filter also has a new chain and front sprocket for wheelies handle bar bush guards also has a loud knock in the front but seems to run good has electric start aftermarket exhaust haven’t drove it yet so hopefully I didn’t get a bad deal

I use that citrus degreaser a lot on my dirt bike and etc. that stuff will get the job done
Lets see the hands of those that got goose bumps when he rubbed foil on the header pipe.
Lose the K and N dirt injector ASAP! UNI filter is the only way to go if you want your engine to last. Add an outer wares if it’s really dusty where you’re riding. Even if you apply the new oil perfectly it isn’t good enough for more than clean street riding.

Everybody is making a big deal about the wire that is disconnected... it’s nothing to worry about it only the thermostat wire which isn’t needed.

befor covid prices went up already. january feb...
around october 2019 ltz400 were already scarce to find under 3000€ road legal...
now 4000€ is the minimum..
and banshee dont even talk about it... every LITTERALY every body wants a banshee now... and UP goes the prices...
That initial smoke out the exhaust is rings, oil ring, valve guides, or valve seats. I would do a compression test to get an idea what’s going on on the inside of that cylinder (although I don’t know how far you’re going into the engine).
The nutral wire should be a sensor coming off the motor.an to clean engines i use meguiars hot rims chrome cleaner its in a red bottle no scrubbing needed. Dont leave it on more that 5 min an wash it off.
Get some titanium tape for the header pipe. That's what I had to do. Mine melted my pants that I wore for rain and snow and shorts were definitely out. My 450 come right up on a wheelie. All you need is a cam and a 520 kit etc. Mine is like a different bike from when I got it. I know that I missed my 99 400ex after I got my 04 450r at least until the upgrades. But I still wish I had the ole 400. It was fun and much easier to ride.
Simple Green and hot water
Is all you need to clean a filter.

Just a little tip bleed the air off the gauge before you check your next tire as the gauge holds the pressure to give you a reading (little button on the side )
Maybe you just didn’t show it but there is supposed to be a spring behind the oil filter.... at least there is on my 06 450er. Might want to check into that if there wasn’t one....
Got a 1998 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 put piston rings cylinder piston new carb and since I paid $375 for it and a parts quad i think it was a good deal
you dont have to turn the key off its not like there is a battery
true its a kick start and has not lights.... so i guess there is no battery and or works off the engine stator
You shouldn't use gear oil in your trans on that i run 10w40
I got an 05 450r a few years back. Locked up within a week. Thankfully i got it for cheap, it had +4 a arms on it. Fixed it up and sold it. Prefer my 400ex over it just because I ride trails only.
You are missing a cap bolt on the master cylinder

I race these bikes, get rid of that K&N filter and get a uni, also while you are doing it I would get a Ls4 fibers hood, they are good on not breaking and come in many colors, and I wouldn’t put any headlights or taillights on it, they just drain off the battery and you will go through many battery’s, so just save the time and keep them deleted

I would double check using that gear oil. I looked in a 2004 manual engine 10-40 or 5-30 and transmission 10-40 jaso ma
You dont need fancy air filter cleaner, you just hose that shit down with brake cleaner until it comes out clear

Id toss that filter at least me im not a fan of those k&n filters ive heard they let a lot of dirt and dust past into the cylinder filters i run a uni or twin air but something is better then nothing also that old oil filter looks like a k&n
Also, to clean all of the aluminum parts and to remove all the rust, use Eagle One MAG aluminum wheel cleaner, after you spray it on let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then power wash off and caot it with wd-40 or some sort of lubricant to keep the rust from returning

The best filter for a quad is a fuel costom filter I run that on my yfz 450

Dude with the fire damage probably $1500 at the most. But it runs, rides, no problem it was a good deal. If it was a clean motor and all good, the bike would be about $2500-$ 3500. 04 and 05 are the best 2 years to get so..you scored. The only perk of the 06 and up is a starter and thats no big deal. Also you need to wrap that header pipe it will burn your leg on a 20 minute ride,

I’ve found the k&n air filter dosent trqp dirt very good I recommend fab 1 works so much better

Yooo I saved 1000 got a sweet deal. 2 days later drops over 1000 from saving. I bought a crf250r for 2000 thinking I got a good deal, passed on another 250r that was listed for 3000 needed nothing grandpa owned let’s say I put more then 3000 into the bike I got for 2000.
Don't start it with any throttle, it can kick back bad. I do: Gas on, 3 stabs of the throttle, choke up and usually 2 kicks and it'll light off.

That throttle should be adjustable at the thumb I believe. 🤔 Pull down on the thumb piece and see if it is.

Jay franklin Dex 3 is nothing near the same as gear lube. They make specifically designed wet clutch fluid for a reason. Henson and Rekluse both recommend wet clutch specific oil. But what do they know 🤷🏼♂️
Jay franklin but I didn’t say anything about ATF? Other than ATF and gear lube are completely different.
If u want to learn to wheelie all things u must master the clutch dump and throttle control an positioning. Start tumping that clutch man at a stop use 1st rolling be in 2nd

It sounds like it may need valve adjustment. Good compression solid quad didn’t get ripped off very easy to fix, But if the valves do need to be addressed I would do it before it’s to late
Neutral wire at least on the 400ex is right next to the shifter, i dont know if the 450 is the same

That 450 should do wheelie a hella of lot easier than the 400 try coming out of second gear bro but you have to give it enough gas to stand the front end up before you can ride a wheelie
i’m thinking it was near a fire not necessarily on fire, unless they are replacement plastics? engine sounds tight although front sprocket looks knackered sure if you invest a $2-300 in the parts that are missing you’ll get more than your outlay back

In Bulgaria one of the poorest countries a 450 would cost atleast 4000 usd which is the amount some people earn in a year...
Fyi HONDA 450 r kick starts are BERY hot on the market. Not a trashed and disrespected one but a good to great conditioned one. Anybody looking for a $600-$800 TRXR must be from Idaho or Kansas somewhere..js lol
You totally did not pay too much for it. Come 2022 average price will be around 3500-4000 good condition..so just keep her happy and she’ll only appreciate it..pun intended😁
