For those that don't know, sponges grow extremely fast and often outcompete coral reefs. So harvesting sponges by hand won't cause extinction.

Thats why they are becoming rare in greece. Because of thatindset. Florida laws make people cut them off rocks leaving a bud for new growth. Greece pulls the whole sponge which isnt good for conservation.

sponges have a great ability to regulate water. They have small pores in there body called as ostia. Water enters into central cavity of sponges through these ostia. Then water leaves out through one major pore called as spongocoel. This feature of sponges makes them useful for harvesting.

Sponge harvesting is actually a good thing for the environment and the people. It helps the sponges grow faster and healthier, improves the water quality, and provides income and empowerment for coastal communities. Plus, sponge harvesting is done sustainably, following simple guidelines and rotating the areas, because they rely on the sponges for their income and well-being for a long time. So, of course, they need to preserve the natural resources and avoid overexploitation; it’s kind of their future.

So, according to Wikipedia, these are basically alive like mushrooms.
They are composed mainly of cells, but do not have the organization trait to be considered an organism: they do not have tissues, or organs. They are a collection of cells that grows in an irregular pattern, like a Mushroom.
They have no nervous system, but it did not describe if they have any type of signaling capabilities, that most plants and mushrooms do.
🤷‍♂️ So I would say, yes, it is a living thing. But just barely. This object grows & experiences the world just as much as the dust collecting in your house, the mushrooms in the forest, the pink goop in a petri dish, or the black mold in between the walls of your home. 🤷‍♂️
I wouldn't consider this alive like other things, unless science reveals otherwise one day. - It's less "alive" than the trees we cut down to build the homes we live in. 🏠

@@DrakonBlake @DrakonBlake So, part of my job as a Nurse and a student in physics, is to read things and describe them based on what I know scientifically, and what I've looked into so other people can understand. It's an important part of the job.
The information that I've discerned after reading < 6 minutes on sea sponges is that they are:
      1) Cellular systems, not containing tissues, organs or a nervous system
      2) Filter feeders, that grow from semi-organic (Carbon containing) materials, and occasionally non-organic materials
      3) They reproduce by budding, asexually and their cell structure is basically identical to one another
      4) They grow in a regularly irregular pattern, (like a mosaic of tiles) with a generally well supported structure
      5) They can be considered a more "archaic" form of life, and are likely one of the oldest living things on Earth
I've studied biology and scientific theories for more than just 10 years as a nurse. Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics were prerequisites to some of the things we had to study in Nursing. Currently I'm switching gears into a career in nuclear physics.
Since Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source, the disclaimer is there to notify people to read up on what I read, and make their own inferences.
I do not think that people were concerned with the taxonomy of the creatures; They were concerned with the violation of 'rights' (i.e.: suffering) of a living animal that has no way to defend itself, that we humans might just "not care" about because we want our little sponges to bathe with!
This is an "insight & depth" check into the concerns of what people were looking for if they had empathy for a helpless living organism. I certainly did. And I've always wondered since I was a kid, "why are we killing them if we are just using them to bathe with?"
So - the description of the animal to people, how it lives, how it is organized & how it grows, what it feels, if it knows about it's surroundings, etc etc, was the important main idea that people wanted to know the answer to.
Obviously, this topic is confusing, because you are right! They are classified scientifically as "animals", which made no sense to me and I don't think it would make sense to most people too.
But the short research confirms: they are only barely a living thing, less "alive" than we would consider a tree. (Because it has less qualifiers like: adaptation, avoiding danger or harm, housing more life inside of it, etc).
Does that make sense? A literal translation here of the information is not helpful. People are obviously confused by the literal facts. So don't confuse people, explain to them what it is. That's what I did.
It is a repeating cellular structure of filter feeding, budding cells that are identical to one another. - (This sounds like a mushroom!) So I explained it as such.
... And more likely, if anything I said here is true, in the future they'll end up making a new taxonomy for these types of creatures. ( Notice I didn't say organism. Because it doesn't have organs. ... Or tissues. Now what type of 'animal' has 0 organs or tissues? None that I can think of. This subject is confusing, and needed a better, relatable public explanation)

Same thing in tarpon springs Florida just as few miles north of my hometown Dunedin and near the best beach of America Clearwater beach. Interesting fact many Greeks came to the area and now they still have a prominent role in the cities culture and history. The sponge docks are still hugely popular tourist destination with little shops museums and boat tours as well as authentic greek cuisine. As a younger guy I actually worked for one of the boats that harvested sponges ran by a family that had been in the area doing it for over 100 years. Back in the day the divers wore a metal helmet that had air pumped into it from a compressor on the boat. It was common for the hose to get tangled or crimped and many lost their lives due to this. Also even if you were able to get the helmet off and your lead weights you would be carried far away from the boat if you didnt have a tether because of the strong currents. In the gulf around the areas that are used for sponge harvesting the water can either be crystal clear or so murky you cant see past the end of your nose. Another interesting fact is that sponge harvesting actually helps the sponges. When cut they simply just regrow but it also releases spores that eventually start a new colony. It's the only farming in the world that actually is sustainable.
This all being said if you ever have the chance to visit tarpon springs Florida. Head over to dodecanese Blvd and look for a boat named the Anastasi and take in the culture. Finish up with a trip down to Clearwater beach and check out the palm pavilion for a amazing beach side food and drink with live music and Tampa bay areas amazing sunsets.

there’s also a huge difference between ethical harvesting and non-ethical harvesting. if you do it right, you cut the sponge from it’s stem right where the stem becomes a sponge so it can grow back. this way you don’t take a beautiful creation from nature without allowing it to grow back. we can replant trees but we can’t just as easily replant sponges. Bleaching is also very bad for the durability of the sponge. My family has some ethically harvested sponges that are from 28 years ago! Our more recent ones from 6 years ago are just as soft as the ones from almost 3 decades ago.
if they do it incorrectly, the stem of the sponge is taken with and chopped off later, not giving nature a chance to grow the sponge back again.
this way divers can also monitor growth of the sponges as well as the best season for harvesting. One of Greece’s islands which has ethically harvested sponges is Symi. They don’t rip or cut into the sponges, leaving their organic shape as is. They also don’t bleach them. Yes, the price will be much higher but in the long run it’s way better for nature and the sponge will last decades without ripping or tearing.

      @naraseth Рік тому

@@vedatbakrcoglu They can regenerate as long as they are alive and regeneration takes time and energy. It also doesn’t make them immune to diseases and other danger. Sponges need to be alive and intact to do their part of filtering the oceans. Harvesting them, even if you leave something intact, you remove the benefits of the sponge for the ecosystem until it grew back and also leaves it vulnerable and more likely to die.
