- The Band & The Beautiful Emmylou at their best in this studio cut from The Last Waltz.........Thankyou Mr Scorcese for capturing this moment when they were all at the top of their game.
Such a shame that so many of these talented musicians have now passed on.....Richard, Rick and Levon RIP.
In particular Thankyou Levon for your influence.
Every time I listen to this I feel privileged and humble. This is pure musical magic. It touches every emotional fibre in my soul.
What a beautiful comment!
i understand.... I'm the same 😊
Emmylou was born in 47, so she's 31 here? Wtf, she looks 20 lol. Awesome song!
Garth on accordian, Danko on fiddle, Levon on mandolin?, Richard on drums. Amazing display of versatility by an awesome group of musicians
Danko's vocals are killer!!
I was like holy s..t the band is the band of all bands it was zimmy s band to
Yes, that is Levon on mandolin.
Who's playing bass? Was it dubbed in later?
@@northlightphotography7891 Imagine it's Danko on bass, and would agree it was probably overdubbed after they wrapped up the main track seen here.
This is the song my parents names me after, pretty cool.
Imagine how different your life would be if they'd called you "Baby Let Me Follow You Down (Reprise)" instead.
That's beautiful! very cool indeed.
My parents too ❤❤
my mom miscarried but she was going to name her evangeline after this song so if i have a daughter i will name her evangeline :)
@@clairec6362 How are you here if your mother miscarried? I am so confused....
I don't know I've watched it maybe 70, 80 times over the last 45 years. If there is a genre called Americana, this is it. These performers' impact on our music was and is profound. They are masters of their craft. I'll be watching until my boat goes down.
Hear hear
Cliche. But it really doesn’t get any better than this. R U kidding me - Emmylou and Da Band. Cmon man❤
The guys of "The Band" sound great. Then Emmy Lou kicks in, and the whole song gets amazingly good! Wonderful combination!!!
Saw The Last Waltz on TV for the first time in 1980. Watching this song, I was obsessed, who is that lovely girl singing like an angel? Went out and bought Blue Kentucky Girl, my first purchase of a country album, and the rest is history. Also amazed that they only rehearsed it once, most of the band were playing not their normal instrument, and it was written the night before. Will never tire of watching this performance. Thank you to Martin Scorsese.
Probably 1980 for me too. Recorded in 1976 of course but not released in 1978 I think. All the interviews done in 1978 too. Have it on dvd as well as the Dylan Brittish tour movies.
Levon Helm was so good as Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miners Daughter that the real Loretta burst into tears first seeing him on screen - it was her father come to life.
I agree. That scene where he takes Loretta to the train stop and says, "I'll never see you again" is heart wrenching. Should have won him a best supporting Oscar for that performance.
Lyrics:
She stands on the banks of the mighty Mississippi
Alone in the pale moonlight
Waiting for a man, a riverboat gambler
Said that he'd return tonight
They used to waltz on the banks of the mighty Mississippi
Loving the whole night through
'Til the riverboat gambler went off to make a killing
And bring it on back to you
Evangeline, Evangeline
Curses the soul of the Mississippi queen
That pulled her man away
Bayou Sam, from the south Lousianna
Had gambling in his veins
Evangeline, from the Maritimes
Was slowly going insane
High on the top of hickory hill
She stands in the lightning and thunder
Down on the river, the boat was a-sinking
She watched that queen go under

I just discovered Emmylou Harris a few days ago through First Aid Kit and I can't stop listening to her
Love her voice. Emmy Lou Harris, the purest voice in country music.
Combined with Rick Danko, pure perfection.
Being from SAINT MARTINVILLE , LOUISIANA and having a statue of EVANGELINE in our church square really has affected me.
🤣🤣🤣
So proud my 22 year old son discovered them on his own
I found this through scent of a woman about 15 years ago, about 18yo. As well
That's pretty awesome Anne, I grew up loving hip hop and country when was young then hard rock and metal.. now the band and everything else lol.
Wish my kids were that cool hahaha
Im sixteen and also found this on my own thank god
Proud of him too, go away rap right !
An angel singing with one of the best bands ever.
True, true... 1st time seeing this... Excellent! Emmylou melts my heart!
@@paolo-n2000 You need to see The Last Waltz

Amen
Americana when we need it badly.
I love this so much. And it's heartbreaking too, though. The angelic Emmylou off in the clouds, separate from them until she sings! Rick and Levon so young at the top of their game. Robbie with his 24 hours song lyrics. All of it! This is solid fucking gold. RIP, guys.
Oh how I love this song, Long live The Band and Emmylou Harris
As much as I love Sheryl Crow, and I do, Emmy Lou, singing this song with the great Levon, is sheer perfection! ❤️
One of my absolute favorites. The Band is amazing and adding Emmylou takes it over the top. She can harmonize with anyone.
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. They don't make music like this anymore.
i’ve seen this a thousand times and i hope to see it a thousand more times before i croak
BLIMEY ,WHEN DO YOU TURN INTO FROG?
I'm with you, good buddy💓
I have never seen a group of more talented musicians in one band before or since.!!
Emmylou is in perfect harmony in this performance. She is a "queen".
The level of musical talent on display here is something to behold. This pushed me to learn more about Emmylou Harris and I wasn't disappointed ☺️
Here is the lyrics

The pisser is that this song was written by Robbie Robertson the night before this take on film. Some of the singers (like Emmylou) were reading lyrics off of big cards held up off-camera. They only rehearsed it once before the take. (All testified by Levon in an interview years later). So listen to this arrangement, the vocals, and the keyboard work by Garth. Absolutely Stunning.
makes this performance even more impressive
Now I'm wery stunned... I didn't never hear this before. Mind-blowing achievement.
WHAT??? I knew nothing about that! Pure talent in every frame. Do you know about any video or publishing where this is explained? I'd love to know more about it.
Which shows what raw talent can do. Cool story!
@@BertisGuitar Dude - this *is* the version from the Last Waltz. It was a soundcheck before the concert(!) Sloppy? Not really - more like unpolished - and now you know why!
Too bad these guys didn’t do bluegrass I bet it would’ve sounded nice
I'm a lifelong fan of Sweet Emmylou, but I just stumbled across this great video. Wow, this is as good as music gets. Love it, love it, love it...
Larry Beavens the Last Waltz. Best music video ever.
You're not wrong there
Yea, you right,brother😎
Larry Beavens
Perfection!
That's because it's the great legendary band!
One of the greatest bands ever .....playing w/an angel attached to it....Where all this music has gone?
Love the way THE BAND musicians interchange instruments and Lead vocals with ease. Emmy Lou adds the icing! Great!
Emmy Lou Harris is an icon of American music.
My wife's name - a raven-haired, Cajun beauty from Calcasieu parish.
Two beautiful singing angels, Emmylou and Allison. The Last Waltz. Vinyl for the Ages!
amen!
Been in love with Emmylou for 50 years.
If you're not you're already dead
Regardless of when, who and how it's a great song! Saw Emmy Lou, Willie Nelson and Charlie Daniel's in Concert and it's a time I will never forget!
Emmylou is so talented, i love everyone of her songs , and this is another favorite .
What a band. Truly masters of their craft. Is there any equivalent today? Anyone even close? Surely this inspired people to emulate.
There will never be an equivalent. They were unique. The modern music industry does not encourage originality or genius.
Closest thing is Band of Heathens, who admit that they pull a lot from The Band. That being said, as much as I enjoy BOH, they ain’t even close.
Rick Danko what a voice. All in all what a bunch of great artist together
Just read in a book about The Band that someone described Rick's voice "as the most achingly plaintive in rock and roll, that could bring a tear to the eyes of even the most hardcord Hell's Angels. They were right. Listen to Rick's version of "It makes no difference".

The number of singers she has sung with is amazing! The number of awards she has won is even more amazing. An Angel to me!
Everyone wanted to sing with Emmylou. She was a jewell in any crown.
She IS a jewel in any crown. lol
Real Purty-like.

Such an important song. This is pure magic.
Emmylou is a country GODDESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP Levon. You are sorely missed>
Dale West Yeah, the Band were’nt too bad either!
God sent this woman to us so we would know what an young Angel looks like, and sounds like. Now we know what an old Angel sounds like and looks like, also.

Richard on the drums & the phenomenal Rick Danko jigging away..not to mention ELou sounding like an angel from another planet..Mss Levon also
Garth too!
The Last Waltz was in 1976.....Emmylou's is so very beautiful.....Her hair...OMG!!
Nobody can beat The Band and Emmyloe Harris
Been listening to Emmylou since the year I was born ('77). My dad was always blasting her records on our living room record player. This is such a great tune. Love the hoedown sound. Fiddle, mandolin and accordion make it sound so good.
She can make scratching your fingernails on a chalkboard sound great if she sang along with it.
Never get tired of listening to this son....emylou is unique....
The greatest of all time. Brings tears to my eyes. Watched the film about 50 times.
Stephen Hudson same for me !want to share a hanky? Hello from France
Great !
and that's just today
i remember when i was a teenager and my friends and i went and saw this on the big screen back when they still had big screens in the movie theaters ... that was a great night , great movie , and regretfully most of those friends are dead now .
The Band and Emmy Lou' Hot Band plus a few others were the very best bands of their era.
And if Gram Parsons had lived --
moment captured in time. . .musicality and Americana pure. . .respect for the music and the harmonies. . .magical and timeless
Damn, I had forgotten how good looking Emmylou was back then. Were we ever that young?
We were that young once, but we didn't look as good as Emmylou,!
Zigfried Dieter yeah, just too dumb to see it! She's my fav. all-time female artist!
I think she’s got better looking with time!
Still is with her silver hair.
This may be one of the best country song of all time
Wow I have been searching for the version for a while. Emmylou's voice is amazing.
I saw Levon and his daughter Amy sing this at one of his "Midnight Rambles" in his barn in Woodstock, NY on New Year's Eve 2006 or maybe 2007. Best NYE of my life.
so nice to see they can swipe instruments and still sound like the band perfectly
Pretty sure you mean "swap," or perhaps you know something the cops don't?
The Band - fabulous !
Emmylou - such Beauty and Talent !
This is fantastic upload - Thank You Muppet1950 ! :)
The best of the real music that was anti-disco of the late 70's. The Band
They don't call them THE BAND for nothing I mean, look, RICHARD MANUAL on drums other than piano and plus,EMMYLOU HARRIS on harmonies vocals.
Emmylou brings gold to every gathering
Saw Emmylou and The Band at the old Warner's Theater in Fresno, CA around 1981. They recorded a live album that night. 'Twas great!
Emmy Lou is an angel. A fan from India 🙏
This song tells the feminine side of history in a quick and easy country folk hymn.
"THE BAND" - One of the BEST - if not, THE BEST BAND - in HISTORY! Yes Sir!
Listen well to ALL their albums - and you'll never be the the same - thank God!
No clapping! No appreciation! No audience! Thank goodness someone recorded it. And, thanks for letting us see it.
C A Campbell I was looking for an audience as well. At the end everyone just walked away. Weird!
It was recorded live on a sound stage for the "Last Waltz" documentary but there was no live audience.
"The Weight" with the Staples Singers was recorded the same way.
It took a whole day to produce the number and get it right.
Martin Scorcese recorded it (directed it)
It’s just a sound check ***
In my humble opinion Rick Danko "NAILS IT" ...on this gem incorparated into The Last Walz
Yes he does!!!
Amazing performance! I love The Band and their The Last Waltz concert...but Emmylou brings new taste of this "Evangeline".
2:40 and that "pulled her man awAY" of Richard is so nice.
To me this is easily the standout from the Last Waltz.
Followed by so much else in this movie. I think The Weight ain't far behind Evangeline
@@peterturner3134 Hard to pick a favorite, "It makes no difference" is another one that touches your heart and soul, lyrics by Robbie Robertson and song with soul and feelings like no one else could Rick Danko.
The Most underrated band in the history of music, but the best in my opinion.
Underrated by whom? Everyone knows The Band is the shit.
31 años tenía el angelito Emmylou en este vídeo?? No me lo puedo creer. Aparenta 18 como mucho, está guapísima y muy jovencita!!!
This song has vibe so good that we can feel today at 2021
WHO DID EMMYLOU NOT SING WITH OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS , WHAT A LEGEND
Levon!!
Emmylou Harris is beautiful.
Hermosa melodia ,me siento en el espacio una paz ❤
I think “Evangeline” is the Cajuns’ theme song. Emmylou honours them by doing this song so exquisitely. Ira Lee, Ph.D.

A treasure. Thank you Mr. Scorsese. Notice Richard Emanuel playing beautiful Levon-style drums. Also, notice no one is playing bass, so it must have been over dubbed later . . . unless someone is playing bass off camera?
So sad to realize that only Robbie and Garth are left of that entire line-up ( oh, except Emmylou). May they all R.I.P.
Is their any instrument Ole Levon cannot play? Amazing man RIP!
With multiple members of The Band playing multiple instruments it sometimes looked they were having a game of musical chairs during concerts lol
Looks strange seeing Richard on drums and Levon playing a stringed instrument.
Nope he was a pretty good actor also. His daughter Amy is very good
short and sweet. mostly sweet. emmylou and the band make a great combo.
Didunia musik ,jarang penyanyi country yg hit seperti Emmylou Harris , memang penyanyi yg sy kagumi ,,the best ,,,
That beautiful hair...Beautiful woman.....
My Emmylou is still so beautiful with her short gray hair!!
Emmylou is the best and what a great band!!Love these songs!!!!
How sweet it is!!👍😁🍀🍀
Wait this is my name😮😍💖💖💖I really love the song
When I think of the 1st woman, Eve, I think of Emmylou .
I first heard of, or saw, Emmylou when I watched the Last Waltz at some point in the 80s on TV. Needless to say I felt in love with this angelic woman instantly. Then in 96 I saw her live in London during the Wrecking Ball tour, in a very intimate venue. Not only that, but she sat next to me on the bar during the break, we probably touched lol. I was 26 at the time, she was 49 I think and a goddess of a woman in the flesh as well. I so wanted to say something, but couldn't find anything not silly to say... Either way, I consider that concert to be probably the best I've ever seen.
This is my definitive version! Damn
Levon's voice was so good
Emmylou and Levon - enough talent right there to burst the world at the seams.
As a musician, bass 44 yrs. My daughter learned this one!!
such a great performance ....... R.I.P., Levon
t bad you never will hear this type of perfect harmony anymore
Mark Doyle
Listen to TRIO with Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. Serious harmony.
Listen to I'm with Her, Crossin Muddy Waters.
This is just epic on so many levels
What a beautiful discovery
RIP Rick Danko and Levon Helm. They loved to sing.
