Molecular Formula vs Structural Formula vs Skeletal Formula

- This video provides a detailed overview of three primary types of chemical formulas: molecular formulas, structural formulas, and skeletal formulas.
More organic chemistry help at www.Breslyn.org !
We'll start with molecular formulas, which simply list the types and numbers of atoms in a molecule, offering no structural insights. Then we’ll look at structural formulas, which build on molecular formulas by showing the connections between atoms, thus giving a basic view of the molecule's structure. Lastly, we'll cover skeletal formulas, which are streamlined representations used mainly in organic chemistry to depict the carbon backbone of molecules, omitting most hydrogen atoms.
Be sure to do the practice problems to really learn to identify and draw each type of formula. Also look carefully at the visual demonstrations that show how each formula type correlates to the actual structure of molecules, aimed at improving understanding and visualization skills.
hey! I just wanted to say thanks for all of the work you have put out there for free for the public! You are such a good teacher, and I am using your videos to help study for my exam tomorrow :)
Thanks and all the best on your exam!
thanks man for the help i was looking for this
No problem 👍
Hi Mr. Breslyn. I have a question, how can you tell the polarity between like compounds or big ones such as hexane, water, octane, and etc?
Good question. It's essential the same as in this video ua-cam.com/video/OHFGXfWB_r4/v-deo.html , but for some compounds, like alcohols, as they get larger the solubility will change. They discuss this here: chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/2organic/alcohols.html
Glad to see you are continuing your work.
I will be in touch to update you on my situation
I look forward to hearing from you!
See again with the mind reading! I just moved into revising organic chem and here this shows up! so grateful for your videos especially knowing they are concise and to the point, which helps to ease me out of scrolling and into doing something productive when I can't be bothered to open my textbook or listen to a whole lecture.
Nice, that's great to hear! I also put my first orgo guide up on www.breslyn.org if you need it as a refresher.
@@wbreslyn ill check it out! Thanks
How do you predict products for covalent compounds. Like S8 + O2 -> SO2
Or
SO2 + O2 -> SO3
Or
N2 + H2 -> NH3
Like where do these numbers come from if we don’t know the charges?
You can look and see if the possible resulting compounds obey the octet rule, that can help. So SO2 is possible, SO3. SO4 or SO5, not so much. The number of valence electrons gives you some idea as well. But really, it is tricky because often the products depend on the conditions.

Thanks, you are the best!
You're welcome!
Yoo,can you draw a graph again,we have a test on tomorrow 😢
What graph are you referring to? I'd be happy to try and draw it again!
Maybe this:

or
this?

@@wbreslyn amm just draw step by step 🙏
Do you have anything (video or advice) on empirical formula? Particularly confused about the point of it? Like, whats it's use and how do different compounds simplify?
ALSO condensed formula where it's CH3(CH2)4CH3 or something like that with branches
This is my video on empirical vs molecular formulas:
ua-cam.com/video/242aoPZuE68/v-deo.html
I need to make a video on that!
@@wbreslyn thank you!!!
Great video! I love practicing IUPAC naming of compounds from their skeletal structure and drawing skeletal structures in my free time
Yes, they are sort of like puzzles but with actual molecules. Glad to hear someone else likes them!
Good morning sir I am Hamza
Good evening!
@@wbreslyn its morning time here sir
Oh right, it's evening here, morning where you are!
@@wbreslyn India my name is Hamza
I understand you, but why is humility translated into Arabic?
Probably something to do with all this AI stuff google is doing.
@@wbreslyn I did not understand. Does this mean that I should stop watching you and unsubscribe to your channel? I did not understand
@@Feli46x-se2uv No, not at all! Please keep watching! What I mean is that sometimes UA-cam will do strange things in terms of translation - it's not in the power of the content creator in many cases. My guess is that is why humility is translated into Arabic.
@@wbreslyn ok I will watch your videos and continue to follow you, but I have a question: Do you teach all levels or is it general for all grades?
@@wbreslyn you so good 🫀❤️
Who we know by seeing orbital digrams that a particular atom has vacant orbital or not ??? Plz tell mee
A vacant orbital in an orbital diagram is a box with no arrows in it. Like Boron ua-cam.com/video/gxUVtAZ-Qbw/v-deo.html
