She was really supposed to be a comedian but turned out yo be a fantastic dramatic actress. Even as she got older, she held her own on Sex and the City.
Indeed, she WAS supposed to be a comedian. I wasn't around during her comedy time, but know of it, so I've been quite surprised that she seems to have ZERO sense of humor, on Match Game at the very least.
Notice during this show from 1974 both Gene and Richard do a W.C. Fields impersonation. The comedian W.C. Fields who passed away in 1946 had a very large reasergance in the late 1960s and 1970s and was more famous at that time then during his lifetime. Example his films were shown on college campuses and people would quote him often.
FINALLY! The best episode ever! Gene gagged Brett mid-stream of consciousness, while Richard grabbed her card and revealed her answer! I think I'll record that and put it into an endless loop.
For all the comments saying "I bet Richard hates sitting by Brett this week", they actually appear to be having a pretty good time. You can see them chatting and laughing together throughout....even the hijacking of her answer had them both cracking up. Let's not invent animosity where there is none. (Plenty of time for that later in the run of the show...but its only January 1974)
@@sdlively27 I care! Lol. I've been watching this for hours on end-these people are part of my life in quarantine, and I remember some of them from reruns when I was a wee lass-Dawson and CNR have had a place in my❤️for ages. It's interesting to know a little bit about them all. Gene truly is a leader. And can you imagine being a pilot, let alone a bombardier during a major war? Or any war? That takes some serious courage. He doesn't strike me as the athletic type, although he is pretty adept at jumping off platforms. He must have really had to curb his irreverence while he was in the Air Force. I'd like to watch "Behind the Squares" in its entirety. This Memorial Day, let us have a moment of silence for Lt. Rayburn. (Or is that only for people who died in combat? Anyway, he deserves our gratitude and respect despite his occasional verbal lechery. He's never actually lured anyone to his dressing room as far as we know.)

@@danielletoth777 aww Wow. I bet she's a wonderful lady, she seemed so on the show She was adorable. How neat to be able to see her on You Tube, it's amazing. 🥰
Nipsey is hilarious. He has the kind of voice that busts people up laughing as soon as they hear it. I’ve liked Nipsey since I first saw him on the Flip Wilson show. Always loved him on Match Game.
The contestant did, in fact, say "examinating" and Gene correctly said, "examining" Good catch. You must be from Sweden. The Swedes know English very well.
Okay.🤔😌😏😎 I confess. I REALLY watch these games for the fashion. I don't like Brett Somers banter all of the time BUT I AM IN LOVE WITH HER OUTFIT!!! They used to wear their minis VERY VERRRRRRRRRRRRY SHORT!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
It would have been funny if the "Board" had talked back to Gene. Gene: That is the dumbest answer and I don't care... Board: I don't make the answers, I just slide them!
Meeee!... on more than one occasion, other celebrities have told her to,"SHUT UP!"... from Mclain Stevenson to Buck Owens.. Brett is just diahrea mouth
i don't, because the whole point is that the entire panel is supposed to riff and joke before they show their cards. even the times they tell Brett to hush are funny -- sometimes they do it to Charles, or Richard, or Jack, or Fannie, or Patty, or Nipsey. it's just because they're all friends, and all playing a game (and mostly all drunk LOL!)
Brett is a man, when they boo his anwser he's always says he's you gonna get you in the parking lot. But he's the first to criticize everybody else's anwser, Mr Brett Sommers.
it was not until about 10 years after this episode that those candies became popular. although, they did say "swedish blonde" in this episode which was totally stupid and never a phrase hahahhaha so who knows!! LOL
Nipsey's "woodpecker" joke was totally overlooked
I remember those sharp shirt collars LOL! Loved Anne Meara (Ben Stiller’s mom) ...she was in the movie Fame.

I totally love the attention to detail with the digging up of sl8 episodes. Thank you.
It's amazing how much some celebrities read and memorized their lines yet couldn't spell their answers properly!
I love Richard.
How lit up are these people! Great work if you can get it. Gene climbing on and jumping off (backwards!) the desk!

great move wasn't it!😂
Brett Sommers was the biggest camera hog. The only show that she wasn’t verbally dominating everyone else’s time was when her husband was on the show🤬
It was a good Episode
Thank you Gene, for your Service in the Air Core!! 15:47 15:49 ❤
Hi Shirley it's Air Corps.
I wonder where all Genes suits are now?
This one was off the rails, hilarious.

Its all shtick
Thank you, I thought the same. 😊
It was known he hated her!
“This, DOCtor... is a CUT, abOVE, the OTHers.”
Marcus Welby wasn't a Surgeon. He was an M.D. (more specifically he was a general practitioner) so examination was a better answer.
Last I checked, MD’s can be surgeons...anyway this show is not famed for its accuracy!
I didn't know Rayburn was in the US Air Corps. You learn something new every day.
Skip to around 14:58 to know what I'm talking about.

Flew B-17s with a training squadron in the Pacific. Survived a take-off crash.

Denise was beautiful
Her shyness and always being embarrassed made her even more cute. Sometimes I wonder what ever happened to people like her.

She resembles Lesley Ann Warren in every way.

Panelists:
1. William Shatner
2. Anne Meara
3. Nipsey Russell
4. Brett Somers
5. Richard Dawson
6. Ann Elder
Ann Meara had an absolute beautiful smile
Wow, such a very young William Shatner ( coming from a Star trek Fan( star track) fan from my youth. So handsome, and he knew it. Imo
I love Downstairs Brett. That was a great episode.
I agree
Now, Gene's wearing a suit with a vest that actually FITS. Unlike Richard Dawson on too many Family Feud episodes.
If you made a movie about the Creation of Match Game who would you get to play Gene Rayburn Charles Nelson Reilly & Richard Dawson?
Shutting Brett up and showing her card was priceless.
3:43 Did she say examinating? English isn't my first language, but I don't think that's a word ...
The contestant did, in fact, say "examinating" and Gene correctly said, "examining" Good catch. You must be from Sweden. The Swedes know English very well.
Only 1 panelist still ALIVE from this Episode
JAMES "T" KIRK 😁👍🏻
And Ann Elder
The Canuck 🇨🇦
@@sudsysutherland359 They do have better healthcare and fewer sh00tings. 🤭
Ann Elder is also still alive as of June 2023. She's only 80.
I thought of 'doing make up' but my answer was 'yawning' (during the proposal).
Funny.......Gene sings the song "Over There". That song was used in a Golden Girls episode.
It would have been ironic if Betty White had been on the panel this time.
What a guy that Gene!
Mark Goodson loved him. Helen, his wife, loved him. I don't see why you and I can't.
And I
The poop answer was quite interesting! Must be the most matches ever that were completely different words from what the contestant or each other said!
Because the English language has many euphemisms for defecation.
I would've wrote down 'Exploded'. Would that have counted as poop? = P

"Examinating", lol.
PRUNE KABOOM💥 💥💥💥😛
It would have been funny if the "Board" had talked back to Gene.
Gene: That is the dumbest answer and I don't care...
Board: I don't make the answers, I just slide them!
It dorsnt look right for Gene to have the shortie mic.
Btw: Crushed on Gene Rayburn in my youth!!
Denise reminds of Tony Soprano's psychologist, she also looks like she could be Jake Gyllenhaal's mom
Lorraine Bracco. I waited on her in a bakery one time. Super nice lady.
EXACTLY! The set of the eyes, just like Jakes.
Brett is really good, but she did try to steal the show with telling the world about her clever answers
What was Gene caught saying to celebrities after first ad? at 2:07 Was it “Just help me out”
19:35
Did Brett suddenly go Betty White on her answer? LOL
Floymin Oh without a doubt she did!! Lmfao
If i were on that game show I would have given DENISE a big hug and then invited her to dinner what a doll!! 😷

Gene Has Great Balance Up And Down Haa Haa Haa Haaaaa
One of few times Shatner was the wallflower
it doesn't get more blonde than a swedish blonde, so nope it's not a dumb answer.
I’m surprised that Gene asked BRETT to get out of her seat Because, every time she gets drunk, she jumps off her seat and we know she cannot shut up
How many people wish that Brett would just show her answer and keep quiet?
Meeee!... on more than one occasion, other celebrities have told her to,"SHUT UP!"... from Mclain Stevenson to Buck Owens.. Brett is just diahrea mouth
sometimes, well, yeah most of the time
She wants more screen time!

Everybody
Shatner can’t spell operating.
4:00 Lol - the extra P was for the pot he'd been smoking, or the pills he'd been popping. Captain Kirk was blitzed on something.
That is because spelling never counted in this show
Vickie's hairstyle is horrendous!!!
17:17 😂
20:04 Anne Meara impersonates Brett Somers. 🤭
Maybe it really is the chair (seat).
The prunes question was interesting but not esp. funny.
Richard is marked down $1.95...

And the never ending Brett debate begins....
Anne Meara is REALLY bad at this game but so is Brett so I wonder if they gave her a long term contract too.
Contestant Deneice looks like one of those quiet types, who could REALLY "put the shoes" to a lover.
Ann Mira acts like she’s on quaaludes...
Yeah,so?

At the time it was a bulk candy item that you could only get in candy stores or small convenience stores that sold what was called penny candy.
I thought termites were lignivorous
Well, since Pinocchio was made of wood, he would be "meat" to termites?
