Steve Ditko, the original designer, plotter, and overall co creator of Spider-Man. The promotional pictures for this figure are based on pin up art by Ditko from ASM Annual 1 and 2.
Thanks, that's really good to know! I'll have to read those then for some comparisons once I get my hands on the Green Goblin!
Facts,&he never truly got the credit he deserved
Ditko era Spider-Man comics just hit different. His humor was on point and the stories were really good!
@@brandofigure To be totally honest I've never really ready any of the older comics from before the 90's, but after handling this figure I have a much better appreciation for the art and now an interest in checking out some stories!
@@asan1772nope, ditko was a notorious randian he could’ve never solely created Spider-Man on his own. Stan Lee had a huge influence on it.
Ditko wouldn’t have been caught dead creating a character like Peter Parker and Spider-Man, if you want an example of Ditko’s characters then look no further than Mr. A.
This Mezco fig is done in Ditko's style:
Ditkos Spidey is younger, slimmer, shorter and more Awkard looking than Romita Sr's. The costume is also a dead giveaway. The trimming on the red parts are smaller, making the blue parts more prounouced. And of course, the eyes. They are thinner and slanted.
Also, his Peter Parker is Dorkier and has his hair completely slicked back.
Romita was on record in saying that he wanted Spidey to look more contemporary and attractive . His Spidey is taller and more muscular. The colors are brighter. Especially in the blue section. His eye design is still small but catlike. The red trimmings take a larger amount of space around the shoulders, forearms and boots. This version is known as classic Spiderman.
The biggest difference is in Romita's Peter design. He's more confident, better posture, dresses cooler, his hair is slicked back but has a distinctive loose bang for a more rugged effect.
Mezco is only missing Ditkos web wings, but that's definetly the first Spiderman.
Was Ditko known for his comically large heads ? If so the figure nailed it.
Awesome thank you for the detailed history! I love knowing stuff like that so it's much appreciated!
I THOUGHT it was Ditko, but the lack of under arm webs really threw me off so I didn't want to make any assumptions. I kind of wonder why they didn't do under arm webbing now though. At least as some kind of removable accessory.
After finding out it was Ditko I've looked at a bunch of his art, and while I don't think the art style has a bigger head, his Spidey in general isn't especially slender either. Though I also don't feel like the Mezco head is as big as others say. But maybe that's my own big head talking... 🤣🤣🤣
Very nice! Absolutely the early Ditko look. The spider on Spidey's chest varied from issue to issue, so that's no big deal. It still does in modern times too, if you pay attention, but back in the day, it really varied often--the webbing too. Ditko often had the webbing on Spidey's mask and costume literally change direction to imply speed or for visual effect some times.
Thanks, man! That's actually really interesting to know that the webs changed direction for visual effect. That's hilariously genius.
Any thoughts on the size of the Mezco Spidey head? Several people feel like it's too big, but I like it, but maybe I'm biased since I own the figure now haha!
One of the falsehoods that I often hear spread amongst comic & toy fans today is that "Spider-Man is supposed to be thinner and smaller." This was true when he was in high school, but even in the Ditko Spidey run, Ditko gradually made him bigger and bigger. Ditko looked as him as being inexperienced, smaller, and a bit more confused as a character, but he tried to show a progression. He was getting better. As a student. As a hero. As a man. By the end of Ditko's Spidey run, he was physically just as large and muscular as Romita's version of the character. I don't think he was ever intended to remain a slender, super-lean teenage character. Ditko was not a fan of that kind of stagnation where characters never improve or move forward. Spider-Man was never intended to stay a teenage character, nor was he intended to always weigh in at 150 lbs. That's a load of modern fan B.S.@@ComicallyToys
I'll add--while I don't want to see Spider-Man as big and bulky as Captain America, I think it's perfectly fine to see him the size of Daredevil, Reed Richards, or Cyclops. He doesn't always have to be the smallest guy in the room. Leave those honors to Wolverine and Puck! lol
creases are very common with mezco figures sadly it comes with the territory of making soft goods in this scale, I've owned at least 4 different mezco spidermen and my best advice for care would be to make sure you're adjusting the fabric as you articulate to mitigate the ammount of creases when you're articulating them, dynamic poses are where you need to do this more, these figures really shine when just a smidge more time is spent making it look clean will pay off, have fun posing dudes
Appreciate the tips!
The piano Guile theme is definitely a choice.
*fantastic choice
One of my FAVORITE things is when people recognize the music I'm using in my videos! Pretty much ALL of my videos that have music are using tracks from this amazing artist. Please check them out! www.youtube.com/@LofiLiaMusic
Thanks!! It's a really fun, and very recognizable track. All my music comes from this great artist: www.youtube.com/@LofiLiaMusic
@@ComicallyToysI came to say great review and I recognized the music. Very awesome!
@@EpykkDyzastur Thank you so much! I appreciate you!
The artist is John Romita
Senior
Thanks!
the vinyl wrinkling might be a little off throwing but i STILL want this mezco ill def take care of this lil dude
Lots of people are complaining about it, but the pictures I've taken and posted look good to me. I may do some stress testing to see though how bad it can really get(or not) because I think I'm a little more laid back with my figures than some other collectors are. Like in terms of wanting perfect paint apps and things like that. So I think the creases just don't bother me that much, but we'll see!
@@ComicallyToyscould you please make that stress-testing video please?❤
this Spiderman is after Ditko left Marvel, the design is from the legend John Romita
Senior. He draw Spiderman for a long time, you can see his art like in the comic when Gwen Stacy died in hands of the green goblin died. i already ordered one from Alliexpress.
It looks almost identical to a ditko cover and the box art is a ditko design. I’m pretty sure ditko design was the main inspiration
Thanks! That's what I thought too, but I was thrown off by the lack of underarm webbing and the different spider symbol. Do you have the AliExpress link? I'd like to see it!
Yeah I got some time after posting the video to do a bit more research and was able to find the original art that is used on the box. Definitely Ditko!
Ditko Spidey 100%. Webbing pattern is a lot closer together and the arches of the webbing are very accentuated, and those squinty are are Ditko's eyes. They used Romita Sr's logos tho, which is odd.
Thanks for confirming my confusion! 😅😅😅
I seem to remember seeing Spider-Man in a comic useing a flashlight or something to project an image like the one that comes with the figure
Yeah I remember that too now that you mention it! And I think they do a callback to it in the MCU as well when Pete activates something and it throws up a Spidey logo onto his ceiling I think?
Magnets for the spider sense accessory. Similar to Sue Richards in the 4 pack.
That's a great idea! I wonder if they had considered that idea or not.
This could be the 1967 Animated representation 👀
Dude totally! I think with the right head and accessory it would look great as the original live action TV show version too!
Thinking about getting the Mezco spider for the accessories for my mafex. That web back pack is lit
I think Mezco could make some nice money selling just the accessories as a kit!
I'm kinda glad I held out, he's not quite what I was expecting, but still really neat. I am hoping for a video game classic version I think.
Yeah I know plenty of people are torn on this guy. I'm happy with him, but maybe that's because he's my first Mezco Spidey. Man I remember playing the original Spider-Man on Ps1! He had no fingers! His hands were just blobs, but I loved every bit of it.
@@ComicallyToys thanks for the response! Yes I know exactly what you're talking about haha. I've got the 2099 Mezco Spiderman and that's the only Spiderman from them I have at the moment. He's really well done I think. Have both Moon Knights and really excited about future upgrades there.
@@h.b.nielsen5619 2099 is my favorite Spider person and was the first Mezco I ever got! He's definitely really well done. I'm really interested in the Moon Knight too, but I'm REALLY interested in Iron Fist. I don't normally care about the custom design suits that Mezco does, but that Iron Fist one is just SO good. I'm waiting for someone to sell it at a good price before I go for it though....
Amazing review as always ❤
❤❤❤
He’s Ditko Spidey. Does he have drop down hips? What’s ur experience like with the shoulders? Is the fabric starting to warp?
Oh thanks! I should have figured it was Ditko. No drop down hips. I tugged both sides just now to triple check. Shoulders DO get the creases, but honestly once it's posed I barely notice it. Fabric hasn't been an issue for me. I posted several photos with him posed on my IG so hopefully that gives you a better idea of the shoulders at least instagram.com/p/C2YIm06y-jB/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
I saw someone else online with the same issue. I’m still waiting on mine from Mezco but I’m not sure if I even wanna open it if that shoulder material thing is permanent at all
@@ComicallyToys also, I was wondering is the shoulders seem to have a butterfly joint or any kind of up and down movement like a ball joint
@@zachdewitt7911 Yeah I've seen more people complaining about it too, but the way I see it(for now) it's by design. Cause in the video I show the left arm before it's articulated, and you can still see creases. I think I may do some more experiments with it to see how long it might take to make it really get messed up though.
@@zachdewitt7911 I just double checked and no it doesn't appear to have butterfly joints. But with that said, I was able to get his arms together in front of him to hold a webline. I posted that photo on my Community tab on the channel today. And no I didn't detect any up and down movement. I hope that helps!
I just got mine today directly from Mezco ❤
Heck yeah congrats! Are you enjoying it? And if you do any toy photography then feel free to tag me on IG!
Damn, you got a good figure! Mine came with a loose leg, and horrible paint apps on the light up head :/ and of course since I bought from a third party Mezco won't help. Super bummed with their quality control like 2/3 of the time.
Oof sorry to hear that man. Any chance the place you bought it from would be willing to reach out to get your figure sorted out?
@@ComicallyToys I purchased from eBay and they sent me a refund. Buying from Amazon now, hoping this figure is better!
@@squilliam1716 My fingers are crossed for you!
All those luxury accessories and they still refuse to provide toe articulation.
The foot articulation as a whole is definitely one of Mezco's weak points still.
Would you say the 2nd head is a Romita Sr. design?
Yeah based on a lot of comments the figure is a mix of both Ditko and Romita designs. The default head was definitely Ditko, but the second is more Romita!
This is such a nice figure but idk why my figure light up head doesn’t work
Hmm have you checked the batteries? The batteries that came with my Justice League set for the motherbox are dead. So hopefully that's all it is for you too.
@@ComicallyToys I hope that's the case. This is very common with my other mezco figs too. My Superman figure light-up head doesn't work even after I got new batteries and after buying another light-up head
@@hashirbhaiartist1465 Ugh that's a bummer. Sorry to hear that! Have you tried contacting Mezco for support?
are you finished with your 3d printed spider-man?
About to get mine, would you say the creases on the vinyl may rip overtime? First mezco & don't wanna break it.
I honestly don't have enough experience with it to have an idea, but I would say enjoy the figure, then put it back in a neutral position if possible to reduce the wear and tear. I did a bunch of shots with him in different poses that I put on my IG, and I barely notice the creasing.
creases are very common with mezco figures sadly it comes with the territory of making soft goods in this scale, I've owned at least 4 different mezco spidermen and my best advice for care would be to make sure you're adjusting the fabric as you articulate to mitigate the ammount of creases when you're articulating them, dynamic poses are where you need to do this more, these figures really shine when just a smidge more time is spent making it look clean will pay off, have fun posing dudes, also if youre stressing the fabric too much for too long instead of looking after it will crack, you just gotta
@@notasasquatch Thanks for the tips! This is my first regular Mezco Spidey so I'm interested to see how he holds up over time. Will the creases actually end up cracking? Or is it just kinda ugly?
if you're intending on having him in a deep crunch or arms extended for too long it will, but if youre posing then returning to a vanilla pose chances are that he'll be fine :
)@@ComicallyToys
@@notasasquatch Thank you!
Dont forget to spray fabric protector on your mezcos and very csrefully apply viny leather protecant they will flake potentialy flake in time
Oooh what kind of fabric protectors would you recommend? And vinyl protectant? I remember the people recommending a protectant for the Batman 1989, but a bunch of people said it ruined their Batman. Any thoughts on that?
@@ComicallyToys I used garment shield from Amazon because it specifically states type of fabrics that's safe including spandex and delicates, for vinyl 303 protectant is known to be good, but any vinyl/leather Prorectant works
Also I try not to touch fabric when wet I think dirt could smudge from fingers idk I just try to avoid touching..and wipe off any excess that may over spray onto non fabric areas..like head, hands boots plastics pieces I lightly wipe off while avoiding touching wet fabric
@@edgefinesse4700 Awesome thanks!
Nine TRILLION? You sure?
Hahahahaha I'm nine trillion percent sure I'm a complete bone head! Haha it's definitely supposed to be BILLION. Thanks for the keen eyes and ears!
This would’ve been Amazing if he had toe joints, now I have to customize a $120 figure
😮😮😮 Whoa! If you have an IG and post toy pictures then please tag me if you post pictures of the toe joint! I'd love to see that!
So lots of people say that the vynyl will crack?? I hope not because im not gonna blow 122 bucks on this btw amazing vid
Thanks so much! As far as the cracking... I don't think it's cracking the way you might think of it. So it does crease(like I show in the video), but I think the issue that people are seeing is that the black lines for the webbing are getting messed up looking. I was trying to understand why it's messed up looking compared to other Spider-Man figures they've released(I just got Far From Home Spidey in the mail) and they appear to still be using the same vinyl type of material for the red part of the suit, but the difference is that this one has raised lines instead of just drawn/painted on. Sorry I'm not sure if I explained that very well. I may try to take a few photos for my IG to show what I think the issue is.
Thanks so much! I will most likely buy this, again thank you!!
I have another question tho in what way does the webbing get messed up?
Sorry for the delay! Here are a few pictures. I hope this answers the question for you, but definitely let me know if you have any other questions! instagram.com/p/C3ZgsXDOl4Z/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Tysm I don’t really mind abt the webbing
Suit looks baggy and stitching a bit suspect. I don't mind the oversized head. But it doesn't seem to be a must buy.
Do you have any of the other Mezco Spidey's? I'm interested to know how baggy or not those are since I've not handled one myself. It's just hard for me to imagine previous ones being drastically different(in that particular way) since only so much can change with fabric selections.
@ComicallyToys I purchased both the Spider-Man Homecoming and Far from Home Spider-Man. Of the 2, my FFH Spidey seems to have a better fitting suit, so I sold Homecoming. The FFH is still not as fitted as it should be, but it is what it is. I canceled my preorder for this Classic Spidey when I saw the suit because it seemed to be closer to Homecoming with worse stitching. I've purchased over 100 Mezco at this point. Some of the worst cases for bagey suits are Netflix standard Daredevil and BVS Superman. Some of the best fitting are Punisher MDX, Blade, Moon Knight, Batman Beyond, Armored Justice League Batman, Supreme Knight, Crow to name a few.
@@aaroneaston8899 Interesting! I'm still pretty new to the Mezco collecting, but my collection is growing for sure... I don't have any of the ones you named for best fitted ones, but I'm interested in possibly getting Moon Knight. I love the Batman Beyond character, but like I said in the video, I don't like how obviously different the head from the body is so I'm skipping BB unless I find a crazy good deal on him.
@ComicallyToys For Moon Knight, I own both standard and MDX. Only thing holding the Moon Knight back is non wired capes.
@@aaroneaston8899 That's crazy. I feel like of all the characters to need a wired cape, Moon Knight would definitely be one! All that imagery of his cape looking like a crescent moon and all.
