Border hiking is a forest trekking program conducted on the high terrains of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, ranging to heights of 1000 to 1200 meters. This is a conservation oriented hard trek trekking for a full day. A group of 9 people comprising of 6 tourists, 2 guides and 1 armed guard begin trekking in the morning. This trekking takes you to the deep inside thekkady forest (The Periyar Tiger Reserve), where you will be having high chance for sighting different wild animals like Elephants, wild guars, sambar deers, leopards, bears, tiger etc. Elephants and wild guars are very common. There are two different border hiking options available in thekkady, Thondiyar border hiking and Brandipara border hiking.
Border hiking can be booked from www.periyartig... website, per head cost is Rs.1800, no additional fee for camera or forest entry. This rate includes food as well (minimal average food). Maximum 6 people can go for this hiking and minimum 2 required.
In this video, I have opted for Thondiyar border hiking, I have opted it based on the availability. Both of them are equally good, and both are hard trekking and a day long. Periyar Tiger Reserve offers many other programs to enjoy the forest and wildlife. Edappalayam watch tower is one of the best forest stay I ever had. Periyar Tiger Trail is the most deep forest stay available in Kerala, and the best in terms of wildlife sightings. I have done the videos of Watch tower and Tiger Trail.
