Having the ECM module built into the motor is utter engineering stupidity. It's equally as stupid as if they to started building run caps hermetically sealed into compressors. The way it is , it's a colossal waste of labor as well as copper , steel and rare earth magnet elements that get junked when a perfectly good mechanical assembly is scrapped due to an electronics failure.
Greedy manufacturers want to force folks to buy costly entire replacement motors after warranty ends, but given the stupidity and especially given the egregious waste of scarce neodymium used to make the magnets., motor manufacturers should be legally forced to offer the standalone module (which really is a mini VFD) , and the design must facilitate servicing the electronics module without requiring the completely unnecessary removal of the mechanical three phase motor assembly.

That customer needs a talking buddy... too much time home alone... :) btw it is ridiculous that a blower motor goes bad after 4 years... old systems run 20 years with the same blower... but I get it... it has a electronic board that saves 50 bucks of electricity a year...

Curtis what I really appreciate about your videos is you are so organized and systematic with every job I worked like that. It was in seventies through the nineties that I worked in the HVAC field it's much different now most all the units were janitrol rheem and trane I'm how many of your followers worked on the Trane units the freon connections at compressor were bolt on the line was flared hated them easy on compressor replacement but of course sometimes they would leak very slowly but enough that when it was start up season we would have maybe thirty calls for about a week I worked there for one year I did multi family housing for sixteen years anyways just curious thanks

Could the high rate of failure of the newer ecm controlled blowers be due to transient voltages or high/low voltage? Didn’t know if these units have surge protectors or if a buck/boost converter could help make these units last longer?

Having a whole house surge suppressor installed would stop most of these type of failures. The ECMs do not tolerate voltage spikes well at all.

Whole house surge suppressors have their own set of problems. Why don't the manufacturer just install a surge suppression device in the unit to protect the all the electronics inside.

I have had a Duke Energy whole house surge protector for approximately ten years and not a problem to date.
Had I not had one I'm certain that I would have had to replace failed electrical appliance parts/devices that are sensitive to voltage spikes primarily due to thunderstorms.
Florida is the "Lightning Capital" ...so they say.

Another fine job Curtis. I only have one critique. When changing out a blower motor; I would always clean the blower assembly. Maybe I'm anal. But I wanted to make the blower assembly look like it just came off the showroom floor. I also put a little dab of anti seize on the shaft for the next guy.

What a surprise, another X13 motor in a Rheem/Ruud pkg unit is no good. I honestly would like to know what kills those modules. Is it static pressure, a power surge or a poor design. I've replaced a bunch of those modules in the 6 years I've been here in NC.
