I wanted to point out a trick for those motor brackets. Before you take the bracket off of the old motor, put a 1/2" self tapper through the strap and into the center hump in each bracket arm. This way the arms stay in place. I always hated that style bracket until I had one with screws in it from the factory. Now they all get an upgrade.
Well done Curtis, we are getting very cold windy weather south of Sydney this week, it has been getting down to 6c at my home during the day, they are getting good snow falls south of Canberra in the ski fields 👍 Au
Never seen freeze stat on residential equipment. All commercial equipment have them. Especially on hydronic coils. Trane uses an evaporator defrost control (EDC) on their 7.5T and up DX systems that will disable compressor until coil is above freezing. A conventional freeze stat is a manual reset.
Hey Curtis, I’m looking at getting a Veto Pac. I noticed you now use the open tote instead of the little zip up pack. Was the other one not working well?
Nothing to do with repairs but I cleaned out my unit and noticed my neighbors was full of grass clippings and dirt said wasn't working right showed him we got a air hose and a hose and washed it out said worked much better had to take motor off to clean properly so the next year we just cleaned it to be on safe side and oiled the motor still working good five years later just saying maintenance is the key
Great video Curtis. But I feel alone and have OCD when I watch your channel. You come across some really dumpy looking HVAC systems. Why aren't the homeowners and/or tenants taking care of these systems by keeping them clean? Mine was installed in 2010 and try to keep it looking new and clean as much as possible.
Most people treat HVAC like garbage door/ openers. They really don't know anything about them or what maintenance is necessary, until they stop working. I see people with air handlers in their attics, do no maintenance and suddenly are shocked when their ceiling is bleeding water.
suggestion, PB-Blaster stinks, and could blow that smell into the house, some people are very sensitive to smells. as a home DIY mechanic i use acetone and automatic trans fluid 50/50 mix works as good as PB-blaster and the smell goes away unlike pb. actually nail polish is acetone. mix up in a squirt bottle.
Ugh. The dreaded ECM motor, right? I can't wait till the one in my gas furnace goes out. I do have it protected with a surge protector though. Hopefully helps. You needed a cord to tie up those leaves. Very annoying, but nice plant. nice to be able to work off the back of the truck.
@davidb2438 If you have to look at the refrigerant type then maybe just maybe you might want to look at a p t chart. The only reason I have mindset to the correct to refrigerant is because I do a lot of inspections and homeowners. And real estate agents are quite frankly arted
there is a lot of electronic crap inside those blower motors that can fail or intermittent......... after my blower burned out, I put a regular motor, 3 speed and a relay 24v to run it.
I would use a flash bulb ( not that anyone would know what I'm referring to ) and wire in parallel with a safety to see what was tripping when I wasn't there.
Just a built in P/T chart I'm old school enough that I had a Robinair digital in the 90's that you would plug in the chip for the different refrigerants.
Any opinions here on soft start devices? I'm thinking of one so I can run it with my 9000 watt portable generator? Locked and run: 112 amps/18 amps. Thanks, great videos.
I have been installing the Microair EasyStarts, and so far have been very impressed. I even put them on my own office and house for the same reason as you. On my 5 Ton it lowered the inrush from 147.5 Amps to 34 Amps. When it kicked on, I never even heard my generator lag. We started purchasing them from on online vendor because they're selling them cheaper than I can get them from the wholesale house.
@@bobboscarato1313 I'm curious as to your position on that. I mean, they are for two completely different purposes. There's the old traditional hard start cap, then there's the addition of a 521 Potential Relay, which takes the hard start out of the circuit once the back flow is read, and then there are Easy or Soft Starts that ramp up slowly. These are shown to not only extend compressor life, but make it easier to start on generator. The one I mentioned was using >100 amps inrush with a hard start and just over 30 with a soft start. If we have a new system, in warranty that is tight as we say, then the factory spec hard start is warranted. If we have a 20 year old unit that is dying, a good old 521 and hard start might get a few more years of out it, but a soft start is not about spinning off a tight unit. When watching on a spectrum analyzer we can see that, a hard start doesn't take less energy to fire off the compressor, it just reduces that amount of time the extra amps are needed. Curious to hear your thoughts.
I'm thinking of putting a soft start on my 4 year old 3.5 ton American Standard. Mostly for longer life and to run with generator. I live in treasure Coast Florida. Will that cancel the warranty? Thanks for answering.
It would be fine for a few hrs and satisfy but would freeze up. Bc it was a comm system it would lower the blower speed and not ramp up. Hope you figured it out
I wish you'd use a magnetic tray to collect an HOLD all screws you remove. The thing I notice most often is you put the removed screws in vulnerable places. And you drop/lose a few. Why not get a mag tray, they hold screws great at any angle?
Would the following be a useful idea? Get a magnet with either a hole in it or a clip attached; something to which you can attach an insulated 1"-2" wire with a male spade lug on it. When you pull a connector off a contactor or anywhere else that you don't want to hit a ground and blow a fuse, just plug it into this little device and stick it out of the way somewhere. Just a thought. Hopefully there's no further callback on this one.

Not only are we service techs we are also engineers
evergreen to the rescue Love them motors & much cheaper than OEM
Ahhhh. The intermittent x13. Gotta love those. Seems to always be a last call on a Friday 😂
Yeah, they are junk. I carry at least 2 of the inverters on the trucks at all times. And, one complete motor.
That frond really wanted to be in the movie. :)
Amazed that you know where all the screws are. Lol

I have seen systems suck air in through a leak before. Causing all kinds of crap.
Yes, that would mean it is in a vacuum.
Sometimes the x13 loses its program and they can reprogram the motor at the supply house
That should not be happening. Good reason to switch brands.

Mr what is your aplication to cek troble shooting HVAC.?
there is a lot of electronic crap inside those blower motors that can fail or intermittent......... after my blower burned out, I put a regular motor, 3 speed and a relay 24v to run it.
How about them Elephant Leaves!!!
Do you think those grindings and cuttings being generated, maybe, could cause a jamming at the top ledge of the motor shaft and blower clamp edge?
I would use a flash bulb ( not that anyone would know what I'm referring to ) and wire in parallel with a safety to see what was tripping when I wasn't there.
The guy whose moniker is "We'll Test That." The tester tried about 20 different penetrating oils, and good old liquid Wrench won hands down.
Ty Wrap that leaf out of your way.
what about the iced up coils.. wont uR pressure / tempts be off ??
So it was 410a, you had it set on r22. When you kept saying pressures are fine I was like what is he talking about that's horrible for R22.
Extreme heat can make a person to suffer confusion; It happens sometimes!
I am reading the pressure not the refrigerant
@@HVACGUY OK. It makes sense!
On the Fieldpiece probes doesn’t matter, pressures will remain the same, only superheat and subcool will be different

Use analog VOM to catch voltage spikes.
