*Ukrainian is one of the oldest Indo-European languages. Similar diference between Ukrainian and Belarusian (84% of common lexicology). According to the official data, Ukrainian is more similar to Belarusian, Polish (70% of common lexicology), Slovakian (68%). Ukrainian and russian languages have 62% of common lexicology, it's less, but not strange. Because Ukrainian and Belarusian languages came from East Slavic, but the russian did not. The russian is more similar to Bulgarian (73-74% of common lexicology).*
It also depends from history. Rus was only Ukrainian country, but Rus conquered also Polotsk duchy, on which is based Belarus. The Belarusian people were Litvins, their country was called Litva and their alphabet was a Latin. What about Muscovy (it's Russia), it did not have any relation to the Ukrainian country Rus. Muscovy has roots from Golden Horde. Everything is proved by many foreign evidences on this website: ukraine93.webnode.com.ua/

my moms side of the family is from ukraine, so when i was little i kid almost perfectly speak ukrainian, but when we moved the the US, i can only have short conversations with my mom and my grandparents, and my old friends from ukraine when i visit each summer. so i need to step up my language game so that i can still talk to my family and friends.

I was a Polish child with a Ukrainian step family. I went to Ukrainian school and they refused to teach me Ukrainian because I was Polish. My Ukrainian Baba was furious! She taught me lots of words, but I never was able to put it together into sentences. Like you said, I could understand so much but couldn't speak fluently. I'm watching your videos to refresh my memory because I want to learn to speak Ukrainian fluently for my Baba who passed away 15 years ago. It would make her so happy!

Hi Olya I really have come to like your videos over the last year. They usually have so much information on Ukrainian culture and language. I go to a Ukrainian church in the US and my girlfriend is from Rivne. I have to ask is there some reason why there is a bride agency in your description? Seeing that makes me think of “Russian mail order brides” and I really pray you’re not part of something that sells these girls to the highest bidder. Or anything that supports this concept or idea of selling women at all. People are people, the fetish surrounding Ukrainian girls shouldn’t be supported with such of these things. If you support something like this я надію ти покаятися.

I am not sure if real mail order brides still exists nowadays. But no, I will never participate to such things)

    •  5 років тому

@@Olga_Reznikova Yeah, what he said is something that happened in the 1990's and early 00's. But I haven't heard of literal "main order brides" in a long, long time. Basically, no "selling brides to rich, middle class foreigners". Whatever reason they marry a foreigner one thing is for certain: they are not "sold" like cattle and pets. So I don't know why he said the girls are sold ;). That is something that only happened a long, long time ago. And likely was not even that common back then.

This is a very useful video Olga! Thank you :) I believe that I have an advantage over regular American people since I speak 4 European languages fluently (Spanish, English, French, Italian). The Ukrainian language shares many phonetic sounds like these 4 languages that I speak. Romance languages use the feminine and masculine rule just like Slavic languages. For example in Spanish "La mesa" (the table) is a female and "El libro" (the book) is a male. Ukrainian also conjugate their verbs (in the present/preterite/imperfect/conditional/future) like in all romance languages. Example in the perfect tense: (Verb: To walk in Spanish caminar) Yo camino, tu caminas, el/ella/usted camina, nosotros caminamos, vosotros camináis, ellos/ellas/ustedes caminan. Another feature in the Ukrainian language that I absolutely love is the fact that (just like in Spanish) Ukrainian is pronounced the same way as it is written. Their vowels have 5 standard sounds: A,E,I,O,U. :)

I totally agree that grammar is the last thing you need to think about for learning most languages as usually people will understand you fine even if it is incorrect. I think it is must better to learn grammar and similar "instinctively" by simply using it and reading instead of learning intentionally.

This is exactly what good language courses do. They begin with single words and simple sentences. In case of Slavic languages they show the Latin equivalent to the Kyrillic letters. That's how you learn the alphabet by the way. And you learn two important properties of these languages: sound shifts (L'vov spoken L'viv) and inflections.

Yes she's right it's best to learn as a child learns simple words and sentences ,that's why i like babble.com more than i do Rosetta Stone, there format is much easier to learn and remember, just like a child they teach you pitcure word Association, they show you four or five pictures of stop sign, cars, girl etc" etc", we must learn to speak individual words first like a child before we can move on to whole sentences, i know only a few words in Ukrainian right now as i find it a very hard language to pronounce, whereas Spanish and German is much easier for me

The U.S. State Department for their employee training believes the Ukrainian language is much more difficult to learn than Russian. To be eligible for the State Department's Ukrainian language training you must be able to read/write/speak/understand Russian, and have completed a State Department immersive *basic* Russian language training course with 2,200 hours of lessons and also demonstrate you have a Russian vocabulary of around 13,000 words. Ukrainian language is more difficult than Russian language. I'm not exactly sure I think the *basic* Ukrainian course is an additional 3,000 hours of immersive lessons over a year and a half.

    • @Gee2deDubya
      @Gee2deDubya 5 років тому

It can be if you're a native English speaker, and have no previous experience with Cyrillic. My first language is American English, and I already know some Spanish, but I'm learning Ukrainian now. Learning Ukrainian has been more difficult, because I had to start from scratch, and learn the Cyrillic alphabet first.
Aside from learning a few special characters for Spanish, I didn't have to learn an entire alphabet there. Please don't let that discourage you though, because all that said, I do love learning Ukrainian!

@@glockks56 I actually started learning Russian at first, got discouraged and frustrated, and months later, began learning Ukrainian instead. I've been learning Ukrainian for almost 10 months, iirc.
I don't remember a great deal of what I'd learned with Russian, but the biggest difference I can remember is having a "hard sign/soft sign" in Russian, whereas Ukrainian only has the soft sign. That, and there's differences in how you pronounce certain characters.
That said, Russian is sometimes more familiar now, because I recognize certain words that have similar spelling and/or meaning in Ukrainian. Russian is also sharper in pronunciation, imo, while Ukrainian is a bit more smooth and musical, if that makes sense. It actually made me think of the way I've heard Italians speak, in terms of cadence and accent and whatnot.
As for similarities, you may already know that Ukrainian is lexically more similar to Polish (approx. 75-80%??), than it is to Russian (closer to 65-70%??).
      Hope this helps!
