  • This is an educational screen printing video about how to make plastisol inks feel softer when printed onto textiles such as tee shirts and sweat shirts. This is a brief overview of some steps you can take to make a plastisol screen printed tee shirt feel a lot softer and more comfortable for the person who wears it. There may be many ways to achieve this but in this tutorial video we discuss a few simple things you can do in house. In this video we discuss printed ink volumes, squeegee hardness, higher mesh counts, specialized artwork, curable reducer, and soft hand base. You’ll learn how to make an otherwise thick plastisol print feel much softer. If you’re just starting out with screen printing T-shirts or if you need some tips on the subject, then this video is for you. So sit back and relax while you have some fun learning about screenprinting with plastisol inks. I hope you enjoy yourself and learn something new.

    Cool video. Well, honestly I haven't even watched it but I've heard that water based ink is more difficult to use when starting out but one of the things that interested me about water based ink was the soft feel on textiles.
    This is just the video I needed to satisfy my need to make a soft print with the easier plastisol ink. Thanks for the tips dude 👌

    Thank you ... :D ... I came across a pail of what looks like White ink but it says Ultra soft base ... Is it an additive?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 років тому +1

      It's a soft hand base to help make inks a little softer feeling. It may look white but it will be semi transparent or milky clear-ish looking when printed alone. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    Jon, these are great tips! - Im wondering if you might be able to extrapolate a bit more on how to hopefully obtain a soft hand when the image does NOT contain half tones or distressed artwork of any kind??.... Is a soft hand base preferable in this case? ... Or is it possible to use a harder squeegee durometer or high mesh count with a high opacity ink with less strokes?

      @davidharrell5927 7 років тому +1

      Hotslpit transfers. it adds an extra step though.

      @CatspitProductions  7 років тому +1

      Yeah they might feel a bit softer but they will still be a sweat patch unless you break up the artwork some. But yeah, that's a good thought. Thanks for your input. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      Yes I agree. I feel like a HO ink through a high mesh is typically a pain in the butt.... maybe a standard plastisol that is not HO through a high mesh count such as 200 and up?.... I know there is no silver bullet for this, but Ive been trying to find that magic marriage of mesh to squeegee to ink + stroke/cure method that seems to still offer that "next to no feel" with standard or HO plastisol... seems like an endless journey. I wanted this for my prints before the industry finally started converting over to this as the new standard, but Im beginning to think that maybe Water Based is the way to go these days for the hand that Im after. Im on a manual press with just a infrared flash for flash + cure at the moment.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  7 років тому +2

      Yes, if you want a true soft hand, you would likely prefer water based inks. You might play with discharge inks too.

    • @dailyhabitz
      @dailyhabitz 7 років тому

      CatspitProductions thanks Jon. My biggest concern is effectively curing a water based ink with my infrared flash dryer, as that is all I have for the time being. I'm able to get away with this with plastisol ink, but I often read a good deal about how water base does not play as nice with the same setup so not sure if I should take a stab at it or what?

    I need help figuring out why the plastisol breaks down in the wash for larger images despite proper curing ?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  7 років тому +1

      That should not be the case. How are you curing it? Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    I've been watching your youtube for many yearsss. When are you going to do a video riding the Skateboard that's always in your video 😊 on that wall right there.

      Probably never. I stopped doing those sorts of things a long time ago due to health issues. I still ride a trail dirt bike but I am not doing anything but trail riding and enjoying nature. These days I cannot afford down time due to injuries and I'm actually a bit out of shape... LOL ;) Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    Ill just press for about 5 secs 300 degrees , nice and soft after curing, with a teflon sheet

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  7 років тому +1

      Yes, that can help make the print feel softer. Some people like plastisol heat transfers for that reason too. But it could still be patchy and rubbery. Also breaking up the print as I described can allow the body to breath through the print making it more comfortable to wear in hot weather. Thanks for watching. • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 років тому +2

      You'll have to keep your ink inside an office or something where it's warmer. Cold plastisol ink is very thick but there's not much you can do except warm it up to about 74 degrees F. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      Mixing your ink with a powered mixer or a drill with a mixing wand attached will help with this as well.
