    This is another educational video about the most basic differences between water based and plastisol inks. I have wanted to make this video for a long time but making these videos without scripting can be difficult for me to include everything I want to. Hence, I put video annotations to help add some information to the video throughout. And yes, this video has some plugs for me and my UA-cam channel. I apologize that you have to watch a little self-promotion to get to the free information….. LOL ;)
    “For screen printing shirts at home, we can say there are two common types of inks used. There are air dry textile inks and plastisol textile inks. For printing posters and paper type flat work, you would use poster ink which is also an air dry ink. Either of the two textile inks may be used for screen printing shirts but the poster ink is used only for flat work and graphics printed on porous or glossy paper materials. The screen printing process for printing shirts and flat work will be very similar. It is the same process in general but there will be differences in materials used, beginning with the ink. Choosing which ink to use at home will ultimately depend on your application, economic limitations, space restrictions and/or your end goals. Many people choose to use water based ink for printing shirts because they have an eco friendly reputation. But there are plastisol inks that are manufactured today which are much more environmentally safe than you would think and comply with many government regulations regarding children.”

      +CatspitProductions also what type or brand of t shirt do you use mostly and if you dont cure plastisol or water based theyll wash out in the washer is what youre saying? what if you let ink dry a few days then wash ?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому

      I do not print commercially any longer so I do not "use" any shirt except the ones I like for myself personally. I use a Next Level for my personal shirts, Gildan 5000 for freebies often but for customers you generally use what type of garment the customer wants. You can suggest something based on their needs but often the customer will determine what type or brand they want to use. Plastisol ink needs to be cured and water based inks need to be heat set in order to be wash safe. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      +CatspitProductions oh thanks iforgot about the wash part. ihave fixer so idont need to heat set water based ink . ithought heat setting was curing.though ? also how would you make shiney gloss plastisol i watched a vid and this guy had his ink real shiney if i use plstisol i want it to shine n pop. plastisol blok its called idk thnx

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      My pleasure. heat setting is a little different than curing. Curing indicates a chemical reaction activated by heat whereas heat setting means just that. If I were to do a gloss print i would simply by a gloss specialty ink or perhaps additive. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    • @CatspitProductions

      lol... thank you! But I will admit that for teaching purposes I do repeat information to help people get it easily. And the casual unscripted nature of the videos may allow me to run on a little sometimes. But if you hang in there, listen closely and pay attention to things I repeat, you'll get a lot more out of the videos. I only say that because some have criticized me in the past for being repetitious. I'm glad you haven't found that to be the case so far ;) Thanks for watching! I watched a previous video about fibrillation, and I find the advise from The Print Life to be more helpful. Basically he does print, flash, print. I tried to charge the screen off contact but ends up losing details, and this is a problem. So I would charge on the shirt, then do a few print strokes. This would give good detail, then I would flash the shirt and run a blank screen over it to smash down the fibers. This eliminates fibrillation completely. Unfortunately it slows me down because I have to wait for the pallet to cool before I can print another layer or else the plastisol will lock the screen.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  4 роки тому +1

      To each his or her own ;) But you should not have to go through all that work to eliminate the problem. That increases labor time and ink used. Whenever time is money you want to get off the best print with the least amount of work. If you flash/print/flash on white ink alone, you may as well be printing a 2 color. Thanks for watching! Ads are annoying no matter what you do, but it's a fair trade for a 20 minute long educational video. I say do what you need to do to make a little extra income through UA-cam. Having to wait 5 seconds before we can press "skip ad" is a small price to pay for your invaluable information. I doubt most people would mind.
    Your videos have been super helpful. I plan to start a screen printing business in the very near future. Just out of my home for now, but I have a lot of confidence that it will grow quickly. Your videos have been very helpful in teaching me the ropes and understand what niche of the market I want to focus on. Water based vs plastisol is something I've been debating a lot lately so I'm glad you made this particular video. Thanks!

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      +Michael Yakutis Yeah well I have had to remove most of the ads from my videos because of the mega giant Walmart of screen printing pissing all over my content. It's unfortunate they would rather use me for free than pay me to work with them. But that's how business rolls. FYI.... I do not get paid unless you watch the ad. When you skip ads I get nothing from that at all. The ad has to be watched in it's entirety or clicked on for me to earn anything from it.
      Thank you! You’re very welcome. Glad I can help out through my videos. I appreciate your support. It's nice to know my video work helps out. Good luck and let me know if I can be of assistance anytime. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    • @michaelyakutis7311
      @michaelyakutis7311 8 років тому

      Yeah I had no idea that you had to watch the ENTIRE ad for the person to get money for it. So then...I wonder how it works when we are forced to watch the first 5 seconds and then skip? Does the advertiser get 5 seconds of free ad space? Or does UA-cam pocket some money somehow? I don't expect anyone to be able to answer these questions. More of an observation than anything. Either way it's messed up since the actual video uploader gets....nothing :(

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому

      Ah ye old ad block. That hurts us UA-camr's who aren't more mainstream so thank you. I appreciate that. You're very welcome. Thanks for your support. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому

      Yeah UA-cam doesn't give partial credits..... LOL. I think when the ad is skipped after 5 minutes we do not get paid. Otherwise my earnings wouldn't be so lame.... ;) So yeah when you skip the ad you have only invested 5 seconds and any money UA-cam gets for that I highly doubt I see it at all. AND on UA-cam RED if my content plays I do not get paid for it unless I have enough "watch hours" under my belt. That means only the biggest UA-cam channels get paid from UA-cam RED. So there's another area where I do not get paid for my content. But thanks for thinking about this and considering the ramifications. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

  • @artlab4434

    Thanks so much for your videos. It's always so good to find someone who makes really good "how to" videos like this. I do have one question that you didn't go over in this video regarding water based inks. -- Do you use a higher durometer squeegee or lower for them? And do you have any tips for keeping the ink from drying out in the mesh besides the extender additive? and if it does what's the best way to open the mesh back up? -- Thanks so much again for all of your videos.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, you're welcome :) If the ink is on the thinner side then yes, we use a harder squeegee and perhaps a higher mesh count as well. Back flooding will help keep the stencil wet during printing. I just made a video about that... Water based screen opener and even standard screen opener is the best bet to open up on press clogs. Jonathan, to increase shop WB production would you upgrade standard IR flash or conveyor dryer first to forced air? Obviously cost & electrical requirements will differ.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому

      +Greg Tully If you mean as a stepping stone up then start with a standard flash. A belt dryer will be very expensive to buy so you want to get the forced air from the get go if you're going to buy a belt dryer for water based inks. Follow? A flash would be much cheaper to replace or upgrade. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    Thank you for the suggestion! You solved my doubt :) but now i do have a new question! You said that now you do not print anymore...is that a convenient job nowdays? I'm a client of some screen printing labs here in Italy and i'm used to buy a finished tee ( 3 colors) for 4,50 euro (x 100 pieces ).
    Now trying to start the business: how much should i pay a blank tee to make a decent net earning on screen printing?
    Should I consider to get earnings ONLY on a very high frequency job income?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      You're welcome. I'm happy to help out where I can. However, I'm not sure I can advise you here. Pricing is usually based on the local going rate for the same type of product. So you'll have to do some local research to see what your potential competitors are charging. That's the best way to do it in order to be competitive. Thanks for watching! What is the best type of screen printing emulsion to use with Plastisol inks?

  • @moniquehagansOnly
    @moniquehagansOnly 5 років тому +1

    Thank you for your information you are helping me so much! I have a quick question, I ordered some emulsion (ecotex - AP- Blue) and I'm having a problem with getting the emulsion to keep from washing out. I've burned four screens and NO LUCK! FROM 2MINUTES ALL THE WAY TO 26 MINUTES. I'M STARTING TO THINK 45 MINUTES TO AND HOUR? JUSY WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE SOME I CAN TRY? BUT I WILL TRY 45 MINUTES TO THE HOUR... THANKS AGAIN.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      I'm not familiar with that emulsion. But I would recommend calling who you bought it from to get some info on a startiing point for your exposure source. Honestly it sounds like a very long exposure time. Commercially speaking we use emulsions with much faster exposure times. So this could be the emulsion or it could be your light source. Hey dude, I always arrive back here everytime I run into another problem :)
    I have a really detailed one colour print. I successfully printed a bunch of tshirts a few weeks ago. Last couple of days I've been trying to print some more.
    I'm using water based Permaset ink, specifically yellow on black tshirts.
    So, it takes maybe 7-8-9 passes with the squeegee to get a rich thick colour that I'm happy with.
    The last few days, my prints are blurry.
    I'm wondering if my squeegee pressure isn't consistent on every pass and might be causing the smudging. Is it normal to have to do so many passes to get a bright print?
    I'm thinking if I could get the right colour with 2-3 passes the chances of me smudging it would be radically reduced.
    I have to use waterbased ink, I'm doing the printing in my spare bathroom, don't want to play around with any chemicals.
    Can you offer advice?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому

      That's awesome, glad I can help out. No it should take one or two print strokes if you're using the proper mesh count and squeegee durometer. Try using a more open mesh count. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    I'm an artist, and I'm new to the whole process of screen printing. I'm having some of my artwork put on t shirts now by a local screen printing company. I don't use digital art pads or any sort of computer or software to do my artwork yet. I know, I'm sorely behind the curve on technology :( it's just a little too expensive for me to buy all that stuff right now, plus figuring in the whole learning curve from one form of media to the other (time is money as they say, though I'm sure the investment would eventually be well worth the cost). It's all strictly pen and ink and paint on paper, therefore I don't have the luxury of using digital layers to separate the different colors. What I'm trying to figure out is a more efficient and/or cost effective way of learning how to separate the colors of my artwork, myself. There must be a way to do it, because what did people do in screen printing artwork before computers? I've thought of using tracing paper or some sort of clear plastic cells overlying the black pen and white paper to manually do each color sort of like in old school cartooning. What I'm attempting to try is to eliminate having to hire someone else to vectorize my work and/or separate the colors in order to be turned into screens for printing. If you know of any tips/tricks/websites/videos I could use in order to learn how to do this, it would be VERY much appreciated. I've subscribed and liked too, btw :) Thanks.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      Well then I suppose you will have to do this old school style. You will have to redraw each color separation using tracing paper or acetate. If I were you I would simply use acetate over the original art and re-draw each color sep on different pieces of acetate using a Sharpie. Then you should be able to come back with a black paint pen or even an opaquing pen and blacken the image up nicely being sure to darken all the pen stokes and streaks. Then you should be able to use those as your film positives. Thanks for subscribing! :) Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

      Thank you very much! Glad you found me ;) I'm happy to know I can help out. You cannot use an iron to cure plastisol inks. There may be some water based ink that can be cured with an iron. But usually plastisol inks cure at about 330 degrees F and water based inks may be around 250 degrees F. So you can use anything that could reach those temperatures. Thanks for watching! Okay i thought I addressed this already in a video. And I may have in this one but I plan on making a quick "stand alone" video about that next week as long as I don't discover I already did one like it by then ;) LOL.... but it's a matter of allowing the ink to dry to the touch before heat setting in one way or another. brand new to this....is there any prep to the tee shirts? like pre-washing? -- for water based ink you mention 2 cycles in dryer, can you give more details on that? thanks so much your videos are so helpful

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      +Elle P NO, there is not prepping of the garment at all. Do NOT wash the garment before printing. 2 cycles in the dryer means just that. But it depends if the dryer is getting hot enough. Most water based inks need about 250 or more to heat set so the more heat you give them in a clothes dryer, the better. Glad I can help out through my videos. Thanks for watching. I have been practicing with a water based ink that came with the beginners kit. I would like to order a white water based ink to put on a dark purple shirt. • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      Yes, it can. But you'll need to work out the details yourself since the more ink you print the more heat it will need to cure. But it's the same process no matter how you heat the ink. It has to reach about 330 degrees F for up to a minute or longer depending on how much ink is actually printed. Thanks for watching! It doesn't surprise me Ryonet would try and buy ad time for your videos basically getting prime exposure and cutting revenue from his competition regardless of how small. His past will catch back up with him eventually.
    Something interesting I heard on a video from Cam at Print Life was that he figured since Ryonet and Catspit had so many good videos there is no real reason for him to do any tutorials because as Cam said "the only two channels you need to learn screenprinting" are yours and Ryan's. That is one heck of a compliment since you are in a small shop space and he is in a MULTI-million dollar mega factory. Even Ryonets new book that I read some of, his book is nothing more than a subversive sales brochure for Ryonet products. I am getting ready to convert my basement into a small screen printing shop and I can say my list has many items from your shop on it. It is weird to be "excited" to support a business, it doesn't happen very often anymore!!!!! THANK YOU for the videos!!! They have been so instrumental in my formulation of a business plan over the past year. Started planning and hoping for a $8,000 equipment budget. Currently at about $19,000 budget, but I feel good about production levels and expansion possibilities. Now back to practicing mock projects on Illustrator! Gets easier each day.

    Hey Jonathan,
    I would just like to say these videos are invaluable for me. I have recently really got into screen printing after me and a few friends decided to make our own clothing brand. I have watched many of your videos and each and everyone provides great information. I live in the UK so it is quite ineffective in terms of cost for me to buy my supplies from yourself especially as I am only starting and printing at home with limited money and no presses. You deserve more for your efforts and I personally will reward you when my company takes off. Also I was wondering if there is anyway I can buy a CATSPIT PRODUCTIONS t-shirt - something with a big logo in the middle. I'd love to contribute some money that way and at the same time represent you.
    Thanks very much I really appreciate it,

    hello I have successfully printed a few shirts thanks to your videos I used water base ink . but after the first wash ink looks old and washed off I believe it is called fibrillation how could I fix this problem thanks again.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      +saul sep If the fabric of the shirt is coming through the print after the first wash then try a better quality shirt. Water based ink is thin and sets into the fabric quiet a bit. So it's the garment that is getting fuzzy upon washing. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    Hey couldn't help but notice you mentioning laying out water based prints on a flat surface then flashing them...my method has been hanging them around my shop before flashing, is that ok? Them hanging vertical that is. Cheers mate!

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      That's fine but it may allow for a greater chance of folding the shirt over on itself while wet and perhaps ruining the print. Less handling would be less risky by laying them flat directly off the press. But if it's working for you, then there is no issue there by having them vertical. Water based inks shouldn't run since it's on a fabric substrate. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

    HI, I've been having a tough time printing on sweatshirts. I can't seem to get enough ink through the screen and I'm doing 2 passes. I'm getting some ink beading on the surface after that. I have a flash cure unit that the temp dial broke on now, press wash before and using fast tack 384 to set up palette. Just wondering what I can do. Also I have mixed the ink up to ideal viscosity. Thanks. the sweatshirts are pretty heavy cotton

    Wait, so for plastisol ink it needs to be cured at 320 degrees for a minute? I thought it just needed to reach the temperature and its all good?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      It really just depends on how much ink you print. If the entire ink layer has reached 330 F then you are good to go. Prints with more ink like say with a multi color on a white under base, we might need to give it more time. Usually I say 330 degrees F for up to a minute or longer depending on how much ink you actually print. So that means times can range from maybe 30 seconds to over a minute. Follow? +Goat No not really. It's how you print the ink that will save you ink, hence money. Your set up is more critical in printing the right amount of ink and not wasting ink by printing more than is necessary. • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 років тому +1

      It's possible but unnecessary. Unless there is a creative reason to do that, you want to use the same type inks for the same print. There is no advantage to mixing ink types and it could be an issue rather than a benefit. Stick with one ink type for the same print ;) Thanks for watching! • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 років тому +1

      Well usually in screen printing tee shirts we try to print directly on the garment fabric by "knocking" out the other underlying colors. Plastisol ink would probably bond better to water based already cured on the shirt but I have never done any wash tests with this type of mixture. Water based may not bond well to cured plastisol. So you would have to do some testing if these items are to be laundered.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you, glad you enjoy my video work. Today there are plastisol inks that are phthalate and PVC free. They are also lead free. Ultimately, I feel if the ink is properly cured, it should be safe. It's a rubberized ink so once it is cured properly, it shouldn't come off so as to be ingested. But this is my humble opinion on the matter even though government regulations deem the newest plastisol inks as I have described safe for children under 12 I believe. Do some research and see what the regulations mean and how they came to them to better understand this issue. All inks have pigments which should also probably be considered. Thanks for watching! • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      LOL... not at all. Glad you enjoy my video work. But I chose to become a supplier. There are over 250 screen print shops in my area and there is still enough work to go around. Then some. I still get calls for screenprinting. Here's the catch. I'm a supplier so if I screen print a job and one of my customers comes in for supplies and sees the same job in my press that they bid on last week, then I'm in trouble. I cannot be competition to my equipment and supplies customers. You are either a supplier or a screen printer. You cannot be both with scruples and without stepping on some toes. Screen printers who are suppliers are playing both sides of the coin and it's not a good business practice in my humble opinion. So yeah, there's plenty of work to be had otherwise I could not make a living selling equipment and supplies. Follow? So don't worry about that. The textile industry is strong. Thanks for watching!
